Abstract:We construct a hyperbolic 3-manifold M (with ∂M totally geodesic) which contains no essential closed surfaces, but for any even integer g > 0, there are infinitely many separating slopes r on ∂M so that M [r], the 3-manifold obtained by attaching 2-handle to M along r, contains an essential separating closed surface of genus g and is still hyperbolic.The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results for the cases g = 0, 1.Our 3-manifold M is the complement of a simple small knot in a handlebody.
Handle numbers of guts of sutured manifolds and nearly fibered knots

Abstract:Extending Haken's Theorem to product annuli and disks for Heegaard splittings of sutured manifolds, we show that the handle number of an irreducible sutured manifold equals the handle number of its guts. We further show that reduced sutured manifolds with torus boundary contained in $S^3$ fall in to three types that generalize the three models of guts of knots that are nearly fibered in the instanton or Heegaard Floer sense. In conjunction with these results and another concerning uniqueness of incompressible Seifert surfaces, we show that while many nearly fibered knots have handle number $2$ and a unique incompressible Seifert surface, some have handle number $4$ and others have extra incompressible Seifert surfaces. Examples of nearly fibered knots with non-isotopic incompressible Seifert surfaces are exhibited.

Abstract:We construct genus one knots whose handle number is only realized by Seifert surfaces of non-minimal genus. These are counterexamples to the conjecture that the Seifert genus of a knot is its Morse-Novikov genus. As the Morse-Novikov genus may be greater than the Seifert genus, we define the genus $g$ Morse-Novikov number $MN_g(L)$ as the minimum handle number among Seifert surfaces for $L$ of genus $g$. Since, as we further show, the Morse-Novikov genus and the minimal genus Morse-Novikov number are additive under connected sum of knots, it then follows that there exists examples for which the discrepancies between Seifert genus and Morse-Novikov genus and between the Morse-Novikov number and the minimal genus Morse-Novikov number can be made arbitrarily large.

Abstract:Friedl and Kim show any taut sutured manifold can be realized as a twisted homology product, but their proof gives no practical description of how complicated the realizing representation needs to be. We give a number of results illustrating the relationship between the topology of a taut sutured handlebody and the complexity of a representation realizing it as a homology product.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. A genus two handlebody-knot is a genus two handlebody embedded in the three-sphere. In this paper, we describe some necessary conditions for a two-component link to be a constituent link of a genus two handlebody-knot. We give a lower bound of the crossing number of constituent links of a genus two handlebody-knot such that two-variable Alexander polynomial of the link is nonzero.

Abstract:This elementary article introduces easy-to-manage invariants of genus one knots in homology 3-spheres. To prove their invariance, we investigate properties of an invariant of 3-dimensional genus two homology handlebodies called the Alexander form. The Alexander form of a 3-manifold E with boundary contains all Reidemeister torsions of link exteriors obtained by attaching two-handles along the boundary of E. It is a useful tool for studying Alexander polynomials and Reidemeister torsions. We extract invariants of genus one Seifert surfaces from the Alexander form of their exteriors.

Abstract:Given a knot or link in the handlebody, $H_g$, of genus $g$ we prove that it can always be represented as the plat closure of a braid in $H_g$. We further establish the Hilden braid group for the handlebody, as a subgroup of the mixed braid group, whose elements have the first $g$ strands fixed forming the identity braid. We then formulate and prove the algebraic equivalence connecting mixed plats belonging to the same link isotopy class in $H_g$. The plat closure representation can be particularly suitable for computing knot invariants.

Abstract:A new method for understanding the relations between molecular design and topological features has been developed on the basis of the Seifert construction in knot theory. Our result shows that the T2k-molecular doubled knots possess the point symmetry group C2 and that the T2k+1-molecular doubled knots possess the point symmetry group C1. Hence both sets are topological chiral. When the rungs are cut down, topological symmetries of the molecular knots are unchanged, except for the molecular knots 01 and 41. Moreover, the novel topology of the topological rubber glove has been discussed. Our results led us to infer that the point symmetry group S1 is necessary and sufficient for the molecular topological rubber glove.

Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

Abstract:To a Seifert matrix of a knot K one can associate a matrix w(K) with entries in the rational function field, Q(t). The Murasugi, Milnor, and Levine-Tristram knot signatures, all of which provide bounds on the 4-genus of a knot, are determined by w(K). More generally, the minimal rank of a representative of the class represented by w(K) in the Witt group of hermitian forms over Q(t) provides a lower bound for the 4-genus of K. Here we describe an easily computed new bound on the minimal rank of the class represented by w(K). Furthermore, this lower bound is complete modulo torsion in the Witt group. Specifically, if the bound on the rank is M, then 4w(K) has a representative of rank exactly 4M. Applications to explicit knots are given, finding 4-genus bounds for specific knots that are unattainable via other approaches.

Abstract:We provide three 3-dimensional characterizations of the Z-slice genus of a knot, the minimal genus of a locally-flat surface in 4-space cobounding the knot whose complement has cyclic fundamental group: in terms of balanced algebraic unknotting, in terms of Seifert surfaces, and in terms of presentation matrices of the Blanchfield pairing. This result generalizes to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere and surfaces in certain simply connected signature zero 4-manifolds cobounding this homology sphere. Using the Blanchfield characterization, we obtain effective lower bounds for the Z-slice genus from the linking pairing of the double branched covering of the knot. In contrast, we show that for odd primes p, the linking pairing on the first homology of the p-fold branched covering is determined up to isometry by the action of the deck transformation group on said first homology. As an application of the new upper and lower bounds, we complete the calculation of the Z-slice genus for all prime knots with crossing number up to 12.

Abstract:For any smooth manifold $M$ of dimension $d\geq4$ we construct explicit classes in homotopy groups of spaces of embeddings of either an arc or a circle into $M$, in every degree that is a multiple of $d-3$, and show that they are detected in the Taylor tower of Goodwillie and Weiss. The classes are obtained from families of string links constructed in the $d$-ball.

Abstract:Gons and holes in point sets have been extensively studied in the literature. For simple drawings of the complete graph a generalization of the Erdős--Szekeres theorem is known and empty triangles have been investigated. We introduce a notion of $k$-holes for simple drawings and study their existence with respect to the convexity hierarchy. We present a family of simple drawings without 4-holes and prove a generalization of Gerken's empty hexagon theorem for convex drawings. A crucial intermediate step will be the structural investigation of pseudolinear subdrawings in convex~drawings.

Composition Properties of Hyperbolic Links in Handlebodies

Abstract:We consider knots and links in handlebodies that have hyperbolic complements and operations akin to composition. Cutting the complements of two such open along separating twice-punctured disks such that each of the four resulting handlebodies has positive genus, and gluing a pair of pieces together along the twice-punctured disks in their boundaries, we show the result is also hyperbolic. This should be contrasted with composition of any pair of knots in the 3-sphere, which is never hyperbolic. Similar results are obtained when both twice-punctured disks are in the same handlebody and we glue a resultant piece to itself along copies of the twice-punctured disks on its boundary. We include applications to staked links.

Abstract:In 2010, Turaev introduced knotoids as a variation on knots that replaces the embedding of a circle with the embedding of a closed interval with two endpoints which here we call poles. We define generalised knotoids to allow arbitrarily many poles, intervals and circles, each pole corresponding to any number of interval endpoints, including zero. This theory subsumes a variety of other related topological objects and introduces some particularly interesting new cases. We explore various analogs of knotoid invariants, including height, index polynomials, bracket polynomials and hyperbolicity. We further generalise to knotoidal graphs, which are a natural extension of spatial graphs that allow both poles and vertices.

Abstract:We study a generalized Witten's finiteness conjecture for the skein modules of oriented compact 3-manifolds with boundary. We formulate an equivalent version of the generalized finiteness conjecture using handlebodies and 2-handles, and prove the conjecture for some classes with the handlebodies of genus 2 and 3 using the equivalent version.

On unknotting fibered positive knots and braids

Abstract:The unknotting number $u$ and the genus $g$ of braid positive knots are equal, as shown by Rudolph. We prove the stronger statement that any positive braid diagram of a genus $g$ knot contains $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Then, we turn to unknotting the more general class of fibered positive knots, for which $u = g$ was conjectured by Stoimenow. We prove that the known ways to unknot braid positive knots do not generalize to fibered positive knots. Namely, we prove that there are fibered positive knots that cannot be unknotted optimally along fibered positive knots; there are fibered positive knots that do not arise as trefoil plumbings; and there are positive diagrams of fibered positive knots of genus $g$ that do not contain $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. In fact, we conjecture that one of our examples is a counterexample to Stoimenow's conjecture.

Abstract:We classify all potential configurations of essential annuli in a genus two atoroidal handlebody exterior in the $3$-sphere, building on two recent classifications: the classification of the JSJ-graph of the exterior and the classification of essential annuli in the exterior. In contrast to knots, genus two handlebody exteriors may contain infinitely many non-isotopic essential annuli, due to the JSJ-graph classification. Our main result characterizes the numbers of different types of essential annuli in such an infinite family.
