Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.

Abstract:A convenient sonochemical route was developed to fabricate one-dimensional (1D) CdS or CdSe assemblies via a simple template method with two-steps: Firstly, the colloid one dimensional cadmium hydroxide particles were prepared as templates under sonication; then, the colloid particles were converted into 1D CdS or CdSe assemblies via a replacement reaction after the surface nucleation and crystal growth processes. The as-prepared CdS and CdSe nanowires were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and UV-visible Spectroscopy. The effects of the ultrasonic irradiation were discussed. It is believed that the ultrasound irradiation played a positive role in both the assembly of the colloid cadmium hydroxide particles into the 1D structure and the growth of CdSe and CdS nanowires. The effects of pH on the morphologies of the cadmium hydroxide template were also discussed. The band gaps of the as-prepared 1D CdSe and CdS assemblies were calculated to be 3.1 eV and 4.9 eV, respectively, indicating the quantum size effect. The as-prepared products might have potential applications in nanodevices in future.

Abstract:CdSe/Cu core/shell nanowires (NWs) are successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method for the first time. By utilizing the solution–liquid–solid (SLS) mechanism, CdSe NWs are fabricated by Bi seeds, which act as catalysts. In the subsequent radial overcoating of the Cu shell on the CdSe NWs, Fe ions have been proven to be an indispensable and efficient catalyzer. The thickness of the Cu shell could be well controlled in the range of 3 to 6 nm by varying the growth temperature (from 300 to 360 °C). Our synthetic strategy pioneers a new possibility for the controlled synthesis of semiconductor–metal heterostructure NWs (especially for II–VI semiconductors), such as CdS/Cu, ZnS/Au, and ZnO/Ag, which had broad application prospects in photoconductors, thin-film transistors, and light-emitting diodes. Theoretically, electrons flow from a higher Fermi-level material to the bottom Fermi-level at the metal–semiconductor heterojunction interface, which aligns the Fermi level and establishes the Schottky barrier. It leads to excess negative charges in metals and excess positive charges in semiconductors. Therefore, those effective electron traps reduce the probability of photogenerated electron–hole pair recombination efficiently, which has been widely applied in solar cells, sensors, photocatalysis, and energy storage. Abstract:The single-crystalline Se nanotubes were synthesized on the surface of Au sheet electrode by cyclic voltammetry. In synthesis process, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was used as soft-template. The formation mechanism of Se nanotubes was discussed. Furthermore, the deposits with other morphologies were also obtained by modulating parameters in the synthesis process. The products as-prepared were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser Raman spectrograph (LRS). The electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by the linear scan voltammetry.

Abstract:CdS nanoparticle-sensitized TiO2 (CdS-TiO2) nanotube arrays are synthesized with a facile one-step electrodeposition technique. In these composited nanostructures, CdS nanoparticles uniformly distribute in the TiO2 nanotubes and partially embed in the shell of TiO2 nanotubes. These structures effectively prevent CdS nanoparticles assembling or clogging the nanotubes and improve the contact area between CdS nanoparticles and the TiO2 shells. Furthermore, the size and distribution density of CdS nanoparticles can be tuned easily by controlling the concentration of electrolyte. Coupling TiO2 nanotubes with CdS nanoparticles extends the optical absorption from ultraviolet into the visible-light region up to 580 nm. An 11-fold enhancement in photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity is observed for CdS-TiO2 nanotube arrays compared with plain TiO2 nanotube arrays. This unique method is also suitable for the synthesis of other narrow band gap semiconductor-sensitized TiO2 nanotubes.

Abstract:We report a simple method of fast synthesis of CdSeS nanorods with chemical composition gradients. The CdSeS nanorods were prepared by single-step addition of Se and S source mixture into Cd precursor solution at elevated temperatures. The size of the nanorods can be tuned by changing the S/Se feed molar ratio. As a result of the reactivity difference between Se and S precursors, the nanorods have a core/shell structure with chemical composition gradients, leading to enhancements of their photoluminescence quantum yield and photostability, which make them attractive for use in optoelectronic devices and bio-labeling.

Abstract:Here we report a facile one-pot method for the preparation of high-quality CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) in aqueous solution under an air atmosphere. Compared with the traditional use of NaHSe or H2 Se, the more stable sodium selenite is utilized as the Se source for preparing highly luminescent CdSe nanocrystals. By using mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) as the capping agent and borate-citrate acid as the buffering solution, CdSe nanocrystals with high quantum yield (up to 70%) have been synthesized conveniently. The influence of different experimental parameters, such as the pH of the precursor solution, the molar ratio of Cd(2+) to Na2 SeO3 and Cd(2+) to MSA on the CdSe nanocrystals, has been systematically investigated. The prepared CdSe NCs were spherical with a size of ~ 5 nm.

Abstract:CdS nanotubes have been prepared by means of chemical bath deposition (CBD) and nanochannel alumina (NCA) template. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the nanotubes are of cubic structure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows the diameters of nanotubes are around 50nm. Furthermore, high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) reveals a clear lattice image of {111} planes in the wall of a CdS nanotube. The directional growth of nanotubes is verified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It can be expected that the method presented in this letter is also appropriate for the preparation of nanotubes of other semiconductors.

Abstract:CeO2 nanotubes with diameters of 10–15nm and length of 150–200nm have been successfully synthesized by a sonochemical method under ambient air in alkali aqueous solution without any template. It was found that both high alkali concentration and ultrasound irradiation played critical roles for the formation of the nanotubes. The crystalline structure and dimensions of the nanotubes were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The UV-visible absorption spectroscopic measurement results showed that the products had conspicuous quantum size effects.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) nanotubes and nanowires have been controllably prepared by a solution-phase approach consisting of hydrothermal process and subsequent sonochemical process in different solvent including methanol, ethanol, acetone, dimethyl formamide, water, isopropanol and ethylene glycol. It is revealed that the formation of the Se nanotubes or nanowires is dependent on the breakage or not of the in-situ generated Se nanoparticles. The effects of the solvents on the morphology of Se nanostructures have been preliminarily discussed. Finally, Se nanotubes and nanowires have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scan electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Since the discovery of WS2 nanotubes in 1992 ( Nature 1992, 360, 444), there have been significant research efforts to synthesize nanotubes and fullerene-like hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) of inorganic materials ( Nat. Nanotechnol. 2006, 1, 103) due to their potential applications as solid lubrications ( J. Mater. Chem. 2005, 15, 1782), chemical sensing ( Adv. Funct. Mater. 2006, 16, 371), drug delivering ( J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 7316), catalysis ( Adv. Mater. 2006, 18, 2561), or quantum harvesting ( Acc. Chem. Res. 2006, 39, 239). Nanotubes can be produced either by rolling up directly from layer compounds ( Nature 2001, 410, 168) or through other mechanisms ( Adv. Mater. 2004, 16, 1497) such as template growth ( Nature 2003, 422, 599) and decomposition ( J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123, 4841). The Kirkendall effect, a classical phenomenon in metallurgy ( Trans. AIME 1947, 171, 130), was recently exploited to fabricate hollow 0-D nanocrystals ( Science 2004, 304, 711) as well as 1-D nanotubes ( Nat. Mater. 2006, 5, 627). Although the dimension of resulting hollow nanostructures depends on precursors, the hollow nanomaterials can also be organized into various dimensional nanostructures spontaneously or induced by an external field. In this letter, we report, for the first time, the UV-light induced fabrication of the ends-closed 1-D CdCl2 nanotubes from 0-D CdSe solid nanocrystals through the Kirkendall effect and the head-to-end assembled process. Our results demonstrate the possibility to control the dimension (0-D to 1-D) and the configuration (solid to hollow) of nanostructures simultaneously and have implications in fabricating hollow nano-objects from zero-dimensional to multidimensional.

Abstract:CdSexTe1-x semiconductor alloy nanotubes (with an external diameter of 140 nm and an internal diameter of 100 nm) were successfully prepared based on the sacrificial template of Cd(OH)Cl nanorods, and were further in situ assembled with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via a sonochemical approach to form the CdSexTe1−x/Au nanotubes. The prepared CdSexTe1−x/Au nanotubes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. CdSexTe1−x/Au nanotubes could integrate the advantages of the electronic properties of CdSeTe and the biocompatible properties of AuNPs. A novel biosensor was fabricated after the immobilization of hemoglobin (Hb) on CdSexTe1−x/Au nanotubes. The immobilized Hb exhibited fast direct electron transfer and good electrocatalytic performance to H2O2.

Abstract:This article describes a rapid, solution-phase approach to the large-scale synthesis of faceted single-crystalline Se nanotubes, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectrography, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The growth mechanism of the Se nanotubes was investigated by a series of experiments, and the rationality of the faceted morphology model for the Se nanotubes was demonstrated from the energetics and geometry. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by voltammetric techniques.

Abstract:PbSe nanotubes were successfully synthesized by a reactive template approach via solvothermal transformation of trigonal selenium (t-Se) nanotubes in ethylene glycol. It was revealed that a relatively high reaction temperature (e. g., 200 degrees C), adequate ascorbic acid, and proper lead source were crucial for preparing PbSe nanotubes through shape-preserved transformation of t-Se nanotubes. Moreover, novel Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes consisting of Se nanotubes covered with a PbSe sheath were obtained by shortening the reaction time and subsequent removal of the inner Se nanotubes resulted in the formation of thin-walled PbSe nanotubes (less than 20 nm in wall thickness). On the basis of the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism for the formation of PbSe nanotubes as well as Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes was proposed. Furthermore, preliminary electrochemical measurements showed that the prepared PbSe nanotubes exhibited a good electrochemical activity.
Preparation and Performance Characterization of “Turnjujube-Like” CdSe Nanofibers

Abstract:It was reported for the first time that “Turnjujube-like” CdSe nanofibers have been assembled onto TiO2surface by electrochemical method of cyclic voltammetry, using CdSO4•8H2O and SeO2as raw material, can be used as a sensitizer of quantum dot-sensitized solar cell. CdSe morphology, structure characterization and optical properties are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolt-visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), respectively. The experimental results show that the prepared “Turnjujube–like” CdSe nanofibers are zinc blende CdSe with cubic crystal system, and it have excellent light absorption within the wavelength range of 300–800 nm. It has a potential for the construction of QD-sensitized solar energy cell.

Abstract:A facile green approach has been developed to control the growth regime in the aqueous synthesis of CdTe semiconductor Quantum dots (QDs) via the electrochemistry method. The Low growth temperature and slow injection of Te precursors are used to prolong the diffusion controlled stage and thus suppress Ostwald ripening during nanocrystal growth. The experimental results showed that a low concentration of Te precursor would definitely influence the growth procedure. The narrow absorption peaks in the UV-visible absorption spectra, as well as transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the as-prepared CdTe QDs had a good monodispersity. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern suggested that the as-prepared QDs have high crystallinity and cubic structure. The QDs exhibited high fluorescence QYs about 50% and the best of QY 67% without any postpreparative treatment over a broad spectral range of 516-609 nm, which could be further broadened by long-term refluxing. The current work suggested that electrochemical method was an attractive approach to the synthesis of high-quality II-VI semiconductor QDs at a large scale.

Abstract:We present a fast and simple protocol for large-scale preparation of quaternary Cu(2)ZnSnSe(4) (CZTSe), as well as CZTSe/Cu(2)ZnSnS(4) (CZTS) core/shell nanowires using CuSe nanowire bundles as self-sacrificial templates. CuSe nanowire bundles were synthesized by reacting Cu(2 - x)Se nanowire bundles with sodium citrate solution. CZTSe nanowires were prepared by reacting CuSe nanowire bundles with Zn(CH(3)COO)(2) and SnCl(2) in triethylene glycol. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction studies show that stannite CZTSe is formed. The formed CZTSe nanowire bundles have diameters of 200-400 nm and lengths of up to hundreds of micrometers. CZTSe/CZTS nanocable bundles with similar morphologies were grown by the addition of some elemental sulfur to the reaction system for growth of CZTSe bundles. The stannite CZTSe/kesterite CZTS core/shell structure of the grown nanocables was confirmed by XRD and high-resolution transmission electron microscope investigation. The influence of S/Se molar ratio in the reaction system on the crystallographic structures and optical properties of CZTSe/CZTS nanocables was studied. The obtained CZTSe/CZTS core/shell nanocable bundles show broad and enhanced optical absorption over the visible and near-infrared region, which is promising for use in photovoltaic applications.
Electrochemical Preparation of CdSe Nanowire Arrays

Abstract:We have successfully prepared CdSe nanowire arrays by direct-current electrodeposition in porous anodic aluminum oxide templates from a dimethyl sulfoxide solution containing CdCl2 and elemental Se. Electron microscopy results show that the length, diameter, and direction of growth of the nanowires are quite uniform. X-ray energy dispersion analysis indicates that the atomic composition of Cd and Se is very close to a 1:1 stoichiometry. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction and high-resolution electron microscope investigations demonstrate that the CdSe nanowires are a uniform hexagonal CdSe crystal.
