Abstract:The relationship between strategic planning and perfor- mance has long been a central topic in strategic management. While existing research has extensively examined this issue, two shortcom- ings remain: (1) there is no consistent conclusion on whether stra- tegic planning has a positive impact on firm performance; and (2) it remains questionable whether current theories on strategic planning can be extended to transitional economies like China. This study col- lected first-hand data through survey on the application of strategic planning in China’s manufacturing companies, and provided an em- pirical test on the effect of strategic planning on firm performance. Our findings indicate that (1) strategic planning has not been widely adopted in China’s transitional economy; (2) manufacturing firms that have applied strategic planning outperform those without stra- tegic planning; and (3) the main reason why firms have not adopted strategic planning relates to the lack of qualified professionals in this area. It also discusses the applications.
