The Idea of Plurality and Unity in the Configuration of the Chinese Nationality and China's Bilingual Education for Its Ethnic Minorities

Abstract:China's ethnic minority bilingual educational research is a cross-cultural, multidisciplinary, systemic research project that incorporates pedagogy, linguistics, and ethnology. Hence some of the major theories, ideas, and concepts of China's ethnological research inevitably exert a major influence on the theory and practice of China's ethnic minority bilingual education. For this reason, I shall, in this article, first give a brief introduction regarding the idea of plurality and unity in the configuration of the Chinese nationality put forward in recent years by Professor Fei Xiaotong, the famous sociologist, anthropologist, and ethnologist. The main body of this article will be devoted to discussions on how this idea relates to China's ethnic minority bilingual education and how to use the idea of plurality and unity in the configuration of the Chinese nationality in the theory and practice of China's ethnic minority bilingual education, and to oppose various manifestations, in these new times, of "linguistic assimilationism" and narrow "linguistic nationalism."
