Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the relationship between distraction frequencies and the proliferative activity of osteoblasts in the gap tissue and determine the proper distraction frequency for the mandibular distraction osteogenesis. Methods:Sixteen goats were assigned randomly into four groups.Group 1 served as the control, all the animals of group 2,3,and 4 underwent corticotomy in mental foramen zone of right mandible and distracted with different frequencies, the frequency of each group was 2 times per day (group 2),4 times per day (group 3) and 6 times per day (group 4).All the animals were sacrificed 4 weeks after distraction. The newly generated bones of the three experimental groups and the mandibles of the control group were obtained and the expression of proliferating cell nu- clear antigen (PCNA) in the osteoblasts in the gap tissue of the three experimental groups and in the mandibles of the control group were detected with immunohistochemistry study. Results:The PCNA positive expressing osteoblasts in distracted gap tissue of group 2,3 and 4 were significantly more than that of control, the PCNA positive expressing osteoblasts of group 3 and 4 were significantly higher than that of group 2.However,there was no significant difference between group 3 and group 4.Conclusions:The proliferative activity ofos- teoblasts in the distracted gap tissue increasesd with the rising of distraction frequency during mandibular distraction osteogenesis, this in- dicated that high frequency distraction may lead to the better new bone formation during mandibular distraction osteogenesis.
