Abstract:This paper investigates the Lipschitz equivalence of generalized {1,3,5}-{1,4,5} self-similar sets D = ( r 1 D ) ∪ ( r 2 D + (1 + r 1 − r 2 − r 3 )/2) ∪ ( r 3 D + 1− r 3 ) and E = ( r 1 E ) ∪ ( r 2 E + 1− r 2 − r 3 ) ∪ ( r 3 E + 1− r 3 ), and proves that D and E are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if there are positive integers m and n such that r 1 m = r 3 n .

Abstract:The authors show that the self-similar set for a finite family of contractive similitudes (similaxities, i.e., \f(i)(x) - f(i)(y)\ = a(i)\x - y\, x,y is an element of R-N, where 0 < ai < 1) is uniformly perfect except the case that it is a singleton. As a corollary, it is proved that this self-similar set has positive Hausdorff dimension provided that it is not a singleton. And a lower bound of the upper box dimension of the uniformly perfect sets is given: Meanwhile the uniformly perfect set with Hausdorff measure zero in its Hausdorff dimension is given.

Abstract:In this paper we provide an up-to-date survey on the study of Lipschitz equivalence of self-similar sets. Lipschitz equivalence is an important property in fractal geometry because it preserves many key properties of fractal sets. A fundamental result by Falconer and Marsh [On the Lipschitz equivalence of Cantor sets, \textit{Mathematika}, \textbf{39} (1992), 223--233] establishes conditions for Lipschitz equivalence based on the algebraic properties of the contraction ratios of the self-similar sets. Recently there has been other substantial progress in the field. This paper is a comprehensive survey of the field. It provides a summary of the important and interesting results in the field. In addition we provide detailed discussions on several important techniques that have been used to prove some of the key results. It is our hope that the paper will provide a good overview of major results and techniques, and a friendly entry point for anyone who is interested in studying problems in this field.

Abstract:Lipschitz equivalence of self-similar sets is an important area in the study of fractal geometry. It is known that two dust-like self-similar sets with the same contraction ratios are always Lipschitz equivalent. However, when self-similar sets have touching structures the problem of Lipschitz equivalence becomes much more challenging and intriguing at the same time. So far the only known results only cover self-similar sets in $\bR$ with no more than 3 branches. In this study we establish results for the Lipschitz equivalence of self-similar sets with touching structures in $\bR$ with arbitrarily many branches. Key to our study is the introduction of a geometric condition for self-similar sets called {\em substitutable}.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets in R-d. One of the fundamental results by Falconer and Marsh [On the Lipschitz equivalence of Cantor sets, Mathematika, 39 (1992), 223-233] establishes conditions for Lipschitz equivalence based on the algebraic properties of the contraction ratios of the self-similar sets. In this paper we extend the study by examining deeper such connections.A key ingredient of our study is the introduction of a new equivalent relation between two dust-like self-similar sets called a matchable condition. Thanks to a certain measure-preserving property of bi-Lipschitz maps between dust-like self-similar sets, we show that the matchable condition is a necessary condition for Lipschitz equivalence.Using the matchable condition we prove several conditions on the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets based on the algebraic properties of the contraction ratios, which include a complete characterization of Lipschitz equivalence when the multiplication groups generated by the contraction ratios have full rank. We also completely characterize the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets with two branches (i.e., they are generated by IFS with two contractive similarities). Some other results are also presented, including a complete characterization of Lipschitz equivalence when one of the self-similar sets has uniform contraction ratio.

Abstract:Fractal sets typically have very complex geometric structures, and a fundamental problem in fractal geometry is to characterize how “similar” different fractal sets are. The Lipschitz equivalence of fractal sets is often used to classify fractal sets that are geometrically similar. Interesting links between Lipschitz equivalence and algebraic properties of contraction ratios for self-similar sets have been uncovered and widely analyzed. However, with the exception of very few papers, the study of Lipschitz equivalence has largely focused on totally disconnected self-similar sets. For connected self-similar sets this problem becomes rather challenging, even for well known fractal models such as fractal squares. In this paper, we introduce geometric and topological methods to study the Lipschitz equivalence of connected fractal squares. In particular we completely characterize the Lipschitz equivalence of fractal squares of order 3 in which one or two squares are removed. We also discuss the Lipschitz equivalence of fractal squares of more general orders. Our paper is the first study of Lipschitz equivalence for nontrivial connected self-similar sets, and it raises also some interesting questions for the more general setting.

Abstract:We investigate and quantify the distinction between rectifiable and purely unrectifiable 1-sets in the plane. That is, given that purely unrectifiable 1-sets always have null intersections with Lipschitz images, we ask whether these sets intersect with Lipschitz images at a dimension that is close to one. In an answer to this question, we show that one-dimensional attractors of iterated function systems that satisfy the open set condition have subsets of dimension arbitrarily close to one that can be covered by Lipschitz graphs. Moreover, the Lipschitz constant of such graphs depends explicitly on the difference between the dimension of the original set and the subset that intersects with the graph.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an expanding $d\times d$ matrix with integer entries and ${\mathcal D}\subset {\mathbb Z}^d$ be a finite digit set. Then the pair $(A, {\mathcal D})$ defines a unique integral self-affine set $K=A^{-1}(K+{\mathcal D})$. In this paper, by replacing the Euclidean norm with a pseudo-norm $w$ in terms of $A$, we construct a hyperbolic graph on $(A, {\mathcal D})$ and show that $K$ can be identified with the hyperbolic boundary. Moreover, if $(A, {\mathcal D})$ safisfies the open set condition, we also prove that two totally disconnected integral self-affine sets are Lipschitz equivalent if an only if they have the same $w$-Hausdorff dimension, that is, their digit sets have equal cardinality. We extends some well-known results in the self-similar sets to the self-affine sets.

Abstract:In the paper, we provide an effective criterion for the Lipschitz equivalence of two-branch Cantor sets and three-branch Cantor sets by studying the irreducibility of polynomials. We also find that any two Cantor sets are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if their contraction vectors are equivalent provided one of the contraction vectors is homogeneous.

Abstract:The topological and metrical equivalence of fractals is an important topic in analysis. In this paper, we use a class of finite state automata, called $\Sigma$-automaton, to construct psuedo-metric spaces, and then apply them to the study of classification of self-similar sets. We first introduce a notion of topology automaton of a fractal gasket, which is a simplified version of neighbor automaton; we show that a fractal gasket is homeomorphic to the psuedo-metric space induced by the topology automaton. Then we construct a universal map to show that psuedo-metric spaces induced by different automata can be bi-Lipschitz equivalent. As an application, we obtain a rather general sufficient condition for two fractal gaskets to be homeomorphic or Lipschitz equivalent.

Abstract:Let $K\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ be a self-similar set generated by an iterated function system $\{\varphi_i\}_{i=1}^m$ satisfying the strong separation condition and let $f$ be a contracting similitude with $f(K)\subset K$. We show that $f(K)$ is relative open in $K$ if all $\varphi_i$'s share a common contraction ratio and orthogonal part. We also provide a counterexample when the orthogonal parts are allowed to vary. This partially answers a question in Elekes, Keleti and M{\'a}th{\'e} [Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems 30 (2010)]. As a byproduct of our argument, when $d=1$ and $K$ admits two homogeneous generating iterated function systems satisfying the strong separation condition but with contraction parts of opposite signs, we show that $K$ is symmetric. This partially answers a question in Feng and Wang [Adv. Math. 222 (2009)].

Abstract:In this paper, we study the question of classifying self-similar sets under bi-Lipschitz mappings and obtain an important bi-Lipschitz invariant, which is an ideal of a ring related to IFS. Roughly speaking, different Lipschitz equivalence classes of self-similar sets correspond to different ideal classes of a related ring. This result reveals an interesting relationship between the Lipschitz classification problem in fractal geometry and the Gauss class number problem in algebraic number theory.

Abstract:Graph directed self-similar structure generalizes the concept of self-similar set and contains some important instants of fractal sets. We characterize the open set condition (OSC), which is fundamental in the study of self-similar set, for graph directed self-similar structure in terms of the post critical set. Using this characterization, we establish the relations between OSC and other separation conditions including post-critically finite, finitely ramified condition and finite preimage property. It turns out that whether the intrinsic metric is doubling makes difference. In particular, finitely ramified condition implies OSC in case of doubling metric but does not in case of non-doubling metric.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:In this paper, we show how to construct the standard Laplacian on the unit square in a self-similar manner. We rewrite the familiar mean value property of planar harmonic functions in terms of averge values on small squares, from which we could know how the planar self-similar resistance form and the Laplacian look like. This approach combines the constructive limit-of-difference-quotients method of Kigami for p.c.f. self-similar sets and the method of averages introduced by Kusuoka and Zhou for the Sierpinski carpet.
