Abstract:Two new species, Macropelopia ( Macropelopia ) excavata Xu & Fu, sp. nov. and Macropelopia ( Macropelopia ) quadrimacula Xu & Fu, sp. nov. , are described as male adults. A key to identify the males of Macropelopia from China is provided. Furthermore, in order to ascertain the genetic distance between these species and their morphological characteristics, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences were uploaded to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. These COI sequences were then utilized to infer the relationships between the species, employing the neighbor-joining method.

Abstract:Seventeen species of Leucophenga subpollinosa species group are described from China (including 11 new species): L. argentina (de Meijere, 1924); L. flavicosta Duda, 1926; L. formosa Okada, 1987; L. nigroscutellata Duda, 1924; L. subpollinosa (de Meijere, 1914); L. umbratula Duda, 1924; L. aculeata sp. nov.; L. acuticauda sp. nov.; L. cultella sp. nov.; L. cyclophylla sp. nov.; L. flaviclypeata sp. nov.; L. fuscipedes sp. nov.; L. gracilenta sp. nov.; L. latipenis sp. nov.; L. magnicauda sp. nov.; L. rhombura sp. nov.; L. rugatifolia sp. nov. The pairwise intra- and interspecific p-distances of aforementioned sequences are summarized.

Abstract:Satsumanus Ishihara is a small leafhopper genus in tribe Opsiini with six described species, and each have a very restricted biogeographical distribution in the Australian, Oriental and Palearctic regions. The species Satsumanus satsumae (Matsumura) is recorded for the first time from Zhejiang Province, and a new species Satsumanus discedens sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Guizhou Province, China. The digital photographs of adult male habitus and male genitalia are provided. An updated checklist, global distribution map and taxonomic identification key to known species are provided. The type specimens of the new species are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, Guizhou University, Guiyang, China (GUGC).

Abstract:Rhadinopsylla (Micropsylloides) flattispina sp. nov. (figs. 1-4)Diagnosis: Only male known. The new species should be included in the subgenus Micro-psylloides Ewing, 1938 and allied to R (M.) jaonis Jordan, 1929, but could be distinguished from the latter by following characters: 1) subapical margin of st. Ⅷ bearing 4 long and stout spiniform bristles of which apical portion strongly flattened (so the new species is named); 2) fixed process of claspar conical and slightly higher than movable process; 3) distal arm of st. Ⅸ S-shaped; 4) dorsal margin of sensilium pikeshaped; 5) the longest apical bristle of segment Ⅱ of hind tarsus reaching beyond the tip of segment Ⅴ.Types: Holotype ♂, paratype 1♂, all taken off Cricetulus kamensis from Aksay Kazakzu Zizhixian (39.4°N, 94.2°E) 2600-2800m, Gansu Province. The holotype and the paratype are deposited in the first and second author's collection respectively.

Differential inhibition by allylsulfide of nitrification and methane oxidation in freshwater sediment

Abstract:Addition of nitrapyrin, allylthiourea, C(inf2)H(inf2), and CH(inf3)F to freshwater sediment slurries inhibited CH(inf4) oxidation and nitrification to similar extents. Dicyandiamide and allylsulfide were less inhibitory for CH(inf4) oxidation than for nitrification. Allylsulfide was the most potent inhibitor of nitrification, and the estimated 50% inhibitory concentrations for this process and CH(inf4) oxidation were 0.2 and 121 (mu)M, respectively. At a concentration of 2 (mu)M allylsulfide, growth and CH(inf4) oxidation activity of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b were not inhibited. Allylsulfide at 200 (mu)M inhibited the growth of M. trichosporium by approximately 50% but did not inhibit CH(inf4) oxidation activity. Nitrite production by cells of M. trichosporium was not significantly affected by allylsulfide, except at a concentration of 2 mM, when growth and CH(inf4) oxidation were also inhibited by about 50%. Methane monooxygenase activity present in soluble fractions of M. trichosporium was not inhibited significantly by allylsulfide at either 200 (mu)M or 2 mM. These results suggest that the partial inhibition of CH(inf4) oxidation in sediment slurries by high allylsulfide concentrations may be caused by an inhibition of the growth of methanotrophs rather than an inhibition of methane monooxygenase activity specifically. We conclude that allylsulfide is a promising tool for the study of interactions of methanotrophs and nitrifiers in N cycling and CH(inf4) turnover in natural systems.

Abstract:Two new species of the genus Mongolotettix Rehn, 1928 from China, i.e. Mongolotettix wulingyuanensis sp. nov. and Mongolotettix. shaanxiensis sp. nov. are described herein. M. wulingyuanensis sp. nov. is similar to M. angustiseptus Wan, Ren & Zhang, 1998, but differs from the latter by body larger, length of body ♂ 25.6 mm, ♀ 39.1mm; tegmina of male without a white stripe on the fore margin at base; subgenital plate of male conical, sides concave, apex acute; both outer sides of epiphallus without acute projection in the middle. M. shaanxiensis sp. nov. is similar to M. anomopterus (Caudell, 1921), but differs from the latter by tegmina of male longer, reaching the end of epiproct, without a white stripe on the fore margin at base, tegmina of female longer, reaching the middle of 2nd abdominal tergum, width of epiphallus larger than height, upper ovipositor valve slender, length 3.8 times its maximum width. A key to all nine known species of the genus from China is given. Type specimens are deposited in the Northwest Plateau Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xining, 810001, China.
