Abstract:The branch intrusion of the Kuroshio Current (KC) into the northern South China Sea (SCS) has a significant effect on temperature, salinity, circulation, and eddy generation. However, the study of Holocene hydrological changes and the historical influence of the KC in this region is limited. Here, we report high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) and delta O-18(sw) (as a proxy for sea surface salinity, SSS) records based on paired Mg/Ca ratios and delta O-18 analyses of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber combined the Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and G. sacculifer/G. ruber ratios from core 05E306 (22 degrees 0.06' N, 118 degrees 59.64' E; water depth = 1440 m) in the northern SCS. By comparing these data with records from cores located within and outside of the main KC flow pathway, we evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution of the KC in this region over the last 7.3 kyr. The strongest influence was observed from 6.1 to 5.3 ka, recorded as an abrupt increase in SST and SSS with remarkably increased P. obliquiloculata abundance (37.4%) and G. sacculifer/G. ruber ratios (3.18). During the following period, 5-2.5 ka, SST decreased by 0.4-1.1 degrees C with an associated decrease in delta O-18(sw), indicating a weakened KC. After 2.5 ka, the influence of the KC on the northern SCS strengthened; however, the high SST record still exhibits a spatial constraint in the longitude distribution of the KC during this period of strongest intrusion. Moreover, the abundance of planktonic foraminifera in the study area more strongly correlates with SSS than SST. The delta O-18(sw) records in core 05E306 show a freshening trend after 5.7 ka, which is inconsistent with the declining East Asian Summer Monsoon precipitation record but consistent with the Holocene freshening trend recorded in the Western Pacific. This suggests that hydrological variability of the northern SCS is mainly influenced by the Western Pacific Ocean.
Assessing the Intercolony Δ18o Proxy Calibration in a Coral Microatoll and Its Implication for ENSO Reconstruction in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:Massive Porites corals are widely used for paleoclimate reconstruction, however the potential of Porites coral microatoll δ18O as high-resolution archive of paleoclimate has only been recognized recently, and the systematic chemistry-climate relationship has yet to be well characterized in the western Pacific. In this study, we examined the reproducibility of microatoll δ18O records against two adjacent Porites corals from the Xisha Islands in the northern South China Sea (SCS) and evaluated the reliability of microatoll δ18O as a proxy for reconstructing regional climate and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. The seasonal to interannual variability in microatoll δ18O was primarily controlled by local sea surface temperature (SST), while the δ18O signal might be suppressed by sea surface salinity (SSS) variations on interannual timescale. Despite the overlapping coral δ18O records exhibited similar patterns of variability, the mean values were consistently offset by ~0.2‰ and the sensitivity of δ18O proxy to climate also varied across different coral colonies. The microatoll δ18O exhibited relatively high proxy-SST sensitivities and amplitude of the seasonal variabilities. These results suggested that intercolony δ18O variability was a significant source of uncertainty in coral-based paleoclimate reconstructions. Microatoll δ18O anomaly appeared to serve as a sensitive and relatively reliable proxy for ENSO variability, although the imprints of weak-to-moderate ENSO events could not be fully captured due to the complex relationship between the East Asian Monsoon and ENSO, as well as the local seawater salinity changes. This study further strengthened the evidence for microatoll as an alternate climate archive in the SCS and highlighted its potential in helping resolve poorly understood paleoclimate before instrumental observations.
Annual Resolution Records of Sea-Level Change Since 1850 CE Reconstructed from Coral Δ18o from the South China Sea

Abstract:Compared with other ocean basins, annual resolution long-term series of sea-level records in the South China Sea (SCS) are still rare. Here we first analyzed the correlation mechanism between the oxygen stable isotopes (delta O-18) of Porites coral and instrumental sea-level, sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall of the SCS, and NINO 3.4 SST during 1980-2015 CE (Common Era); and we then quantitatively reconstructed sea-level at an annual resolution based on the coral delta O-18 in the SCS. The results show that the sea-level fell slightly (-0.73 +/- 0.27 mm/yr) during 1850-1900 CE; then has continuously risen (1.31 +/- 0.06 mm/yr) with a total increase of 152 & PLUSMN; 7 mm from 1900 to 2015 CE. On the inter-annual timescale, ENSO by mediating the overflow effect of seawater in the Western Pacific Warm Pool and the location of storm genesis in the western Pacific, indirectly affects sea-level, rainfall and SSS, which is finally reflected in changes in coral delta O-18 in the SCS. On the long-term timescale, especially since the 1900s, the gradual increase in SST and glaciers and ice sheets meltwater injected into the ocean due to the continuous warming mainly caused by human activities has not only promoted the rise of sea-level, but also caused a gradual negative bias of delta(18)Oseawater (i.e. a gradual decrease of SSS), these processes are faithfully recorded by coral delta O-18. Compared with SST, SSS or delta(18)Oseawater may play a more important role in promoting the negative bias of coral delta O-18 in the SCS. Our study not only provides a better understanding of sea-level history and relationship mechanism around the SCS during 1850-2015 CE, but also may have the potential to provide a valuable proxy for the accurate quantitative reconstruction of sea-level at an annual resolution over a longer time scale for recent past periods.
Testing Coral Paleothermometers (b/ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, U/Ca and Δ 18 O) under Impacts of Large Riverine Runoff

Abstract:Sea surface temperature (SST) proxies including B/Ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, U/Ca and δ 18 O were analyzed in the skeleton of a Porites coral collected from the Zhujiang River (Pearl River) Estuary (ZRE). These geochemical proxies are influenced by river runoff and this area of the northern South China Sea is strongly affected by seasonal freshwater floods. We assessed the robustness of each SST proxy through comparison with the local instrumental SST. Coral Sr/Ca shows the highest correlation with SST variations ( r 2 =0.59), suggesting Sr/Ca is the most robust SST proxy. In contrast, coral δ 18 O ( r 2 =0.46), B/Ca ( r 2 =0.43) and U/Ca ( r 2 =0.41) ratios were only moderately correlated with SST variations, suggesting that they are disturbed by some other factors in addition to SST. The poor correlation ( r 2 =0.27) between SST and Mg/Ca indicates that Mg/Ca in coral skeletons is not a simple function of SST variations. This may ultimately limit the use of Mg/Ca as a coral paleothermometer.
Coral records of Mid-Holocene sea-level highstands and climate responses in the northern South China Sea

Abstract:High-resolution sea-level data and high-precision dating of corals in the northern South China Sea (SCS) during the Holocene provide a reference and historical background for current and future sea-level changes and a basis for scientific assessment of the evolutionary trend of coral reefs in the SCS. Although sporadic studies have been performed around Hainan Island in the northern SCS, the reconstructed sea level presents different values or is controversial because the indicative meaning of the sea-level indicators were neither quantified nor uniform criteria. Here, we determined the quantitative relationship between modern living coral and sea level by measuring the top surfaces of 27 live Porites corals from the inner reef flat along the east coast of Hainan Island and assessed the accuracy of results obtained using coral as sea-level indicators. Additionally, three in situ fossil Porites corals were analyzed based on elevation measurements, digital X-ray radiography, and U-Th dating. The survey results showed that the indicative meanings for the modern live Porites corals is (146.09 ± 8.35) cm below the mean tide level (MTL). It suggested that their upward growth limit is constrained by the sea level, and the lowest low water is the highest level of survival for the modern live Porites corals. Based on the newly defined indicative meanings, 6 new sea-level index points (SLIPs) were obtained and 19 published SLIPs were recalculated. Those SLIPs indicated a relative sea level fluctuation between (227.7 ± 9.8) cm to (154.88 ± 9.8) cm MTL between (5 393 ± 25) cal a BP and (3 390 ± 12) cal a BP, providing evidences of the Mid-Holocene sea-level highstand in the northern SCS. Besides that, our analysis demonstrated that different sea-level histories may be produced based on different indicative meanings or criteria. The dataset of 276 coral U-Th ages indicates that coral reef development in the northern SCS comprised the initial development, boom growth, decline, and flourishing development again. A comparison with regional records indicated that synergistic effects of climatic and environmental factors were involved in the development of coral reefs in the northern SCS. Thus, the cessation of coral reef development during the Holocene in the northern SCS was probably associated with the dry and cold climate in South China, as reflected in the synchronous weakening of the ENSO and East Asian summer monsoon induced by the reduction of the 65°N summer insolation, which forced the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

Abstract:Abstract Seasonal climate variability is an important component of Earth's climate system, and has a significant impact on ecosystems and social systems. However, the temporal resolution of most proxy-based paleoclimate records is limiting to fully understand the past seasonal changes. Here, we used high-precision monthly resolution Sr/Ca records of three Tridacna squamosa specimens from the northern South China Sea (SCS) to reconstruct the sea surface temperature (SST) seasonality during three time periods from the middle Holocene. The results suggested that SST seasonality in the northern SCS during the middle Holocene (3.21 ± 0.98°C) was smaller than that for recent decades (AD 1994–2004, 4.32 ± 0.59°C). Analysis of modern instrumental data showed that the SST seasonality in the northern SCS was dominated by the winter SST, which was deeply influenced by the intensity of East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). A strong EAWM usually resulted in cooler winter SST and a larger SST seasonality in the northern SCS. The reconstructed Holocene EAWM records showed that the EAWM strengthened from the middle to late Holocene, which was seen in our reconstruction of less SST seasonality changes during the middle Holocene in the northern SCS. This study highlighted that the Sr/Ca ratios from Tridacna shells can be used as a potential high-resolution indicator of past seasonal climate changes.

Abstract:Ocean circulation transports heat, salt and nutrients, and has profound impacts on the marine environment and climate change. However, the seasonal to centennial variations of the paleocirculation of the South China Sea (SCS) and their driving forces are still unclear due to limited records. Here we reconstructed a high-resolution Delta 14C record of a coral from Sanya to investigate the seasonal variations of the SCS ocean circulation around 2300 cal yr BP during a grand solar minimum (GSM) period. The seasonal Delta 14C variability shows the influence of coastal upwelling caused by the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) in summer and the effect of water intrusion from the western Pacific Ocean driven by the Kuroshio Intrusion (KI) in winter. We compiled the marine radiocarbon reservoir correction (Delta R) records since 2500 cal yr BP, which indicate a gradual decrease of up -welling significantly correlated with the EASM. Comparisons with other climate records suggest that both the EASM and KI may regulate the ocean circulation variability on centennial time scales. As a good index of the sea surface temperature (SST), our Sr/Ca record and spectral analysis results show a low temperature and a low frequency of El Nin similar to o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events around 2300 cal yr BP. Moreover, the composite coral Sr/Ca-SST and ENSO index records since 2500 cal yr BP show relatively low SST and weak ENSO during GSMs, supporting the modulation of tropical SST and ENSO by solar activity. Our study has provided high-resolution proxy data and revealed the driving forces of ocean circulation and climate change in the SCS at multiple time scales, which should be considered in further modeling work.

Abstract:Independent inference of the Asian winter monsoon (AWM), albeit achieved at several sparse sites, has reached no consensus for its variability through the Holocene. A sediment core from the northern coast of the South China Sea (SCS) was utilized to analyze organic biomarkers at (bi‐)decadal resolution, unveiling how SCS oceanic conditions fingerprint the AWM signal. Generally, alkenone sea surface temperature (SST) record, resembling the temporal structures of integrated tropical SST over the past 7,500 years, shows abnormal cool temperatures (up to ~4 °C) during the Little Ice Age and between ~1,200 and 2,500 years BP, when windborne terrigenous hopane compounds experienced considerable increases superimposed on a general increasing trend. Our results, together with augmented SST gradient between the SCS coast and open ocean, consistently suggest AWM strengthening toward the late Holocene. An intensified AWM during cold intervals like the Little Ice Age would have provided strong positive feedback to enhance coastal cooling.
Records of melt water pulses and climate events from the northern South China Sea since late Last Glacial Maximum:Implication of terrigenous input

Abstract:The distribution andδ13C composition of long chain n-alcohols from the late Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the Holocene in Site 4B core sediments from the continental slope of the northern South China Sea was discussed in this paper. The distribution of carbon preference index (CPI, 10.49~24.56), average chain length (ACL, 28.91~29.99) and average carbon isotope (–28.85‰±0.97‰ to–32.92‰±1.38‰) of long chain n-alcohols reflected a C3 higher plant source and a dominated terrigenous input of organic materials into the sediments. The relatively low terrigenous input was related to the extensive melt water pulse (MWP) events (19ka-MWP, MWP-1A and MWP-1B), and B?lling-Aller?d (B/A) warming event from the end of the LGM to the end of the Late Pleistocene in Site 4B sediments (65~102cm, 19.343 to ~ 11.636 ka BP) without glacial period/interglacial period cycle. However, the distribution of the terrigenous input reflected intensified/weakened winter monsoon/summer monsoon cycle during the late LGM and Holocene, with the winter monsoon maximum periods recorded during the late LGM and the summer monsoon maximum periods in about 9.940ka BP. Compared with the cycle climate change of global glacial period/interglacial period, the distribution of the terrigenous input from the end of the LGM to the end of the Late Pleistocene in Site 4B sediments (19.343 to~11.636 ka BP) reflected ambiguous regional comparability, probably related to the regional environmental activity in low latitudes.
Rare earth element geochemistry of reef carbonates in the South China Sea since the Miocene: Insights into paleoclimatic significance

Abstract:Seawater chemistry critically affects the functioning of ocean ecosystems. However, the evolution of the seawater chemistry in the South China Sea (SCS) since the Miocene is not fully resolved, and its links to tectonic and climate changes remain unclear. In-situ, shallow marine carbonates can provide insights into long-term changes in seawater chemistry and associated environmental processes. In this study, we conducted the rare earth element (REE) analysis of the NK-1 core in the southern SCS since the Miocene. The results reveal poor relationships between siliciclastic/diagenetic indicators (mineralogical, isotopic, and elemental data) and REE proxies, which demonstrate that the REE compositions are insensitive to non-carbonate contaminations and diagenesis. The results exhibit seawater-like REE patterns with LREE depletion, positive La anomaly, superchondritic Y/Ho ratio, and negative Ce anomaly, which demonstrate that this core has preserved a signal of the primary seawater REE composition. The Y/Ho ratios range from 45 to 80 and La anomalies range from 1.0 to 2.3 during ∼23–13 Ma, and they then decrease after ∼13 Ma, with the Y/Ho ratios ranging from 30 to 52 and La anomalies ranging from 0.6 to 1.5. Considering that seawater REE components are mainly sourced from terrigenous sources which exhibit lower La anomalies and Y/Ho ratios, our results indicate an enhanced terrigenous input since ∼13 Ma. We consider that the climate cooling and aridity since ∼13 Ma might be responsible for the phenomenon.

Revisiting the South China Sea MORBs: Mg Isotope and Whole-Rock Geochemical Constraints

Abstract:Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts (MORBs) from the South China Sea (SCS) have attracted great attention from geologists in the past decade, but their petrogenesis still remains controversial. Here, we show that the Mg isotopes of MORBs from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Sites U1431, U1433 and U1434 are heterogeneous and present the mechanisms causing such heterogeneity. The MORBs from Sites U1431, U1433 and U1434 have delta Mg-26 values ranging from -0.35 parts per thousand to -0.21 parts per thousand, from -0.34 parts per thousand to -0.13 parts per thousand, and from -0.30 parts per thousand to -0.20 parts per thousand, respectively. Together with all the published data, we found the MORBs at Site U1431 with high MgO contents (> 9 wt%) usually have delta Mg-26 values that are generally lower than the normal mantle (-0.25 parts per thousand +/- 0.04 parts per thousand), whereas some of the Site U1433 MORBs are higher than the normal mantle. Shallow-level geological processes like seawater alteration have negligible effects on the Mg isotope fractionation of our samples. Elemental ratio indicative of the degree of partial melting (like Sm/Nd) from the same site also shows no relationship with the delta Mg-26 variations. Olivine is proposed to have light Mg isotopes. Considering the high MgO (> 9 wt%) contents of low-delta Mg-26 samples and the petrographic evidence, we propose that their slightly light Mg isotopic compositions of U1431 MORBs may result from the enrichment of olivine, rather than reflecting the mantle source. Moreover, low Ce/Pb ratios and most variable delta Mg-26 values of some U1433 MORBs suggest that lower continental crustal materials have contributed to their source. As all the previously published MORBs are evolved, we use the Revpet to estimate the mantle melting conditions of SCS MORBs, including the Site U1500 samples recovered from the northern margin of SCS. Compared with the global MORBs data, there is no thermal anomaly in SCS MORBs. Together with our new Mg isotope data, therefore, we propose that the role of the Hainan mantle plume in the opening and spreading of the SCS may be insignificant.
Effect of Sea-Level Change on Deep-Sea Sedimentary Records in the Northeastern South China Sea over the past 42 kyr

Abstract:We integrated multiple geochemical analysis of a 13.75 m-long core 973-4 recovered from the northeastern South China Sea (SCS) to detect the response of deep-sea sediment archives to sea-level change spanning the last 42 kyr. The age-depth model based on AMS 14C dating, together with the sediment grain size, shows an occurrence of turbidity current at around 14 kyr, which was associated with submarine landslides caused by gas hydrate dissociation. A dominantly terrigenous sediment input was supplied from southwestern Taiwan rivers. By synthesizing environment-sensitive indexes, four distinct stages of paleoenvironmental evolutions were recognized throughout the studied interval. Well-oxygenated condition occurred during the stage I (42.4-31.8 kyr) with low sea-level stand below -80 m, accompanied by flat terrigenous input. The largest amounts of terrigenous sediment input occurred during the late phase of stage II (31.8-20.4 kyr) with the lowest sea-level stand below -120 m because of a short distance from paleo-Taiwan river estuaries to the core location. An occurrence of Ca-enriched turbidity current disturbed the original sediments during the stage III (20.4-13.9 kyr). The stepwise elevated sea-level stand resulted in an enclosed (semi-enclosed) system and contributed to a relatively low-oxygen environment in deep ocean during the stage IV (13.9 kyr—present). Temporal variations of TOC and CaCO3 display contrary pattern synchronously, indicating a decoupled relationship between organic carbon burial and carbonate productivity. Our results highlight that these sedimentary records as reflected in the paleoenvironmental changes in the northeastern SCS were mainly driven by sea-level fluctuations and later, since the mid-Holocene, the strengthening East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) overwhelmed the stable sea level in dominating the environmental changes.

Abstract:A continuous strontium isotope profile with high-resolution sampling is desirable to calibrate multiple global events, realize temporal correlation among different continents, and understand tectonic history of the Permian Period. In this paper, we analyzed 90 micritic limestone samples from South China and 7 samples from Iran, with the aim to gain new 87Sr/86Sr data and obtain a curve of Sr isotopes for the Permian. The concentrations of Mg, Fe, Mn, and Sr are used to discriminate possible diagenesis of the samples. A comparison of those 87Sr/86Sr values between South China and southern Urals confirms that Sr-isotope proxy has the potential to be used for time calibration and correlation in regions where biostratigraphic or radiometric markers are not available. The 87Sr/86Sr curve obtained in this study shows a trend comparable with the LOcally WEighted Scatterplot Smoothing (LOWESS) regression curve from the previous studies. A continuous decline trend from the latest Carboniferous to late Guadalupian was shown, and the lowest 87Sr/86Sr values in the late Capitanian was constrained within the interval from the conodont Jinogondolella shannoni/J. altudaensis to J. xuanhanensis zones. It is followed by an increasing trend to more radiogenic values in the Lopingian with a minor fluctuation in the early Wuchiapingian. We consider that mid-ocean ridge spreading and increasing continental weathering during the transition from convergence to the breakup of Pangea as the dominant factors driving the changes of the seawater Sr isotope ratios.
REE GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS IN THE NORTHERN SOUTH CHINA SEA SINCE THE OLIGOCENE

Abstract:The average abundance of REE in samples obtained from the Pearl River Mouth basin in the northern South China Sea(SCS)is 150.62×10-6,close to the Loess record,reflecting a continental origin.Negative anomaly of Eu is obvious in these samples,with δEu values gradually decreasing from near-coast to off-shore boreholes,which displays a stepwise diffusion of terrigenous matter from north to south.The REE geochemistry characteristics from the Pearl River Mouth basin show high consistency in their variation trends with those from ODP Site 1148.Stepwise tectonic movements occurring since the end of Oligocene caused major geochemical discontinuities mainly at 13.8 Ma,16 Ma,23.8 Ma,and 32 Ma,the most impressive of which at 23.8 Ma has changed the sediment supply in the northern SCS and enlarged differentiations of the sediment composition between various boreholes.Therefore,this 23.8 Ma event exerted a profound influence on the sedimentary environment and sedimentary fill characteristics in the northern SCS.

Abstract:Millennial‐scale nitrogen (N) cycling processes in marginal seas and their response to climate change have not been well understood. Here, we present high‐resolution (ca. 110 years) organic nitrogen isotope (δ15Norg) data since the last deglaciation (16.1 ka) derived from a highly resolved sediment core in the northern South China Sea, aiming to explore millennial‐scale N cycling processes in this area. Unlike most bulk nitrogen isotope (δ15Nbulk) records from the South China Sea, the δ15Norg records show a clear response to well‐defined climatic episodes during the last deglaciation and early Holocene (EH, ∼11.7 to 9 ka), but exhibit a gradually decreasing trend in mid‐to‐late Holocene (since ca. 9 ka). During the last deglaciation and EH, the upper water column N dynamics are controlled by the lateral transport of surface nitrate from eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) presumably via the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) and to some extent, influenced by the altered input of terrigenous matter driven by sea level change. The significant decrease in δ15Norg since the mid‐Holocene (at ca. 9 ka) can be best explained by the increase in local N2 fixation forced by enhanced El Niño. This mechanism is consistent with modern observations. Overall, our results may reflect the main controlling factors of surface ocean N dynamics have shifted from zonal transport of nitrate from the ETP to El Niño since the mid‐Holocene.

Abstract:Marine sediments in coastal zones serve as valuable archives for understanding the history of silicate chemical weathering and summer monsoon rainfall in source areas, providing insights into terrigenous climate and environmental evolution. In this study, we investigated the grain size, clay minerals, and geochemistry of sediments retrieved from core KZK01 in the coastal zone of the northwest South China Sea during the past 13 thousand years before present (kyr BP). Our findings demonstrated that the illite crystallinity index served as a reliable proxy for assessing the intensity of chemical weathering in the source area. Moreover, it distinctly recorded significant climatic events such as the Younger Dryas and Bond events during the Holocene. The dominant driver of the regional East Asian summer monsoon was identified as summer solar radiation in the Northern Hemisphere at low latitudes. Cold climate events exhibited global consistency, potentially influenced by the presence of ice sheets at high latitudes. Lastly, our records revealed a distinct transition at 9.0 kyr, highlighting significant impacts of the Qiongzhou Strait and sea level rise on regional climate dynamics.

Abstract:The Quaternary sediments in the northwestern South China Sea (NW-SCS) provide valuable information about provenance, climate and sea level changes. However, the correlation between the geochemical records in marine sediments and these influencing factors remains less understood in the NW-SCS. Two wells penetrated Quaternary sediments on the shelf and shelf margin of the NW-SCS and provide an excellent dataset. In this study, the major, trace, and rare earth elements in the sediments were analyzed to reveal the Quaternary provenance changes that correlate with the climatic Middle Pleistocene transition (MPT). These results indicate that the core sediments were mainly derived from felsic source rocks and the degree of chemical weathering in the source areas is relatively low (CIA averaged at 58). The Quaternary provenance of the NW-SCS did not undergo significant changes, recording mixed sedimentation from the Red River, Hainan Island, and central Vietnamese sources. The felsic source rocks and negative Eu anomaly indicated the shelf area received sediments primarily from the Red River and Hainan Island. However, a positive Eu anomaly on the shelf margin suggests additional contributions from mafic rocks sourced from central Vietnam. During the MPT (1.3–1.4 to 0.8–0.9 Ma), the dominant periodicity of climate cycles changed from a 40 kyr obliquity cycle to a 100 kyr eccentricity cycle; the cooling climate led to a slight weaking in chemical weathering and a minor decrease in sediment supply from terrestrial sources. After the MPT, the mixed sourced sediments in the shelf and shelf margin areas of the NW-SCS likely suffered from multiple hydrodynamic forces under the influence of the Pleistocene high-frequency and high-amplitude sea level fluctuations. These climate induced changes led to significant fluctuations in element content that provide new insights into Quaternary sources and climatic events in the NW-SCS.

Abstract:A high-resolution dinoflagellate cyst analysis on a sediment core GLW1D from the northern South China Sea (SCS) was performed to reconstruct paleoceanographic conditions over the last 12,500 years through qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative methods. A modern dataset with 398 reference sites in the northern Pacific was assembled and used to identify the relationship between dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and sea-surface temperature (SST), sea-surface salinity (SSS) and primary productivity (PP). Modern analog technique (MAT) was applied to offer first dinoflagellate-cyst-based quantitative estimates of Holocene sea-surface conditions in the western North Pacific. The downcore reconstructions show that SST, SSS and PP were predominantly controlled by the changes in coastal and oceanic currents due to the changes of sea level and monsoon systems. Our results indicate that SST increased while SSS and PP decreased from 12,500 to ~6800 cal yr BP, reaching the maximum SST and the minimum SSS and PP during ~6800–5000 cal yr BP, and followed by a slight decline in SST with minor increases in SSS and PP. The three intervals correspond to the regional onshore sea-level stages of rising, stabilization in a highstand and slight drop, respectively. The Kuroshio Current strongly influenced the core site before ~9900 cal yr BP, reflected by the highest abundances of oceanic Impagidinium spp. and high reconstructed SSS values. This can be explained by a lack of water input from the East China Sea before the opening of the Taiwan Strait. The warmest period, from ~6800 cal yr BP to ~5500 cal yr BP, is recorded by the highest Dapsilidinium pastielsii abundances. Two short-term high-PP events of ~2700–2400 cal yr BP and ~1000–600 cal yr BP, which were characterized by opposite climatic conditions, coincided with two notable societal (dynasty) collapses of China. Enhanced anthropogenic activities since the Late Bronze Age most likely partially affected the high PP through influencing river inputs to the northern SCS.

Abstract:Cold-water corals can provide information of variations in the ambient environment during their lifespans and have been expected to fill the gap in high temporal-resolution paleoceanographic reconstruction of the intermediate and deep waters.Here,we performed explorative studies on a gorgonian sample（SY185-9） collected by the human operating vehicle“Shenhai Yongshi”to examine the application value of cold-water corals in reconstructing paleoenvironment.Located in the Xisha Area of the South China Sea,the Ganquan Plateau is under the influence of the West boundary current of the South China Sea（SCSWBC） and its related warm eddies.The sample was collected on a small seamount at the southwest Ganquan Plateau（16.55°W,110.89°E;water depth 1119.3 m）.Through the analysis of the experimental data of SY185-9,we draw the conclusions as follows:（1） X-ray diffraction（XRD）analyses show that SY185-9 is mainly composed of magnesium calcite (Mg 0.06 Ca 0.94 CO 3 );（2） 14 C dating demonstrates that it was grown during 9621±135～8922±114 a B.P,in the Early Holocene;（3） Variations of elemental compositions on the cross section of SY185-9 were analyzed by electron microscope scanning combined with energy spectrometer and electron probe.The inferred temperature derived from Mg/Ca ratio was 4.7±0.9℃during the growth period of SY185-9,about 0.9℃higher than the modern sea water temperature nearby,likely indicating that the intermediate water temperature of the South China Sea in the Early Holocene was slightly higher than that in the modern.However,the uncertainty caused by the regional applicability and vital effects on the Mg/Ca-temperature calibration equation cannot be excluded.（4） The spectral analysis of Mg/Ca records reveals significant decadal-centennial scale fluctuations.The Mg/Ca records of SY185-9 shows significant 44-a and 127-a cycles during its lifespan,which correspond well with the changes of solar activity during the same period.They display an inverse phase correlation over the 127-a cycle and in-phase correlation over the 44-a cycle.This possibly reflects the natural variability of intermediate water temperature or the connection between cold-water coral and surface climate induced by the seamount topography.Our exploratory experimental studies on the skeleton of gorgonian collected from the South China Sea provide a centennial history of intermediate water temperature at annual resolution during the Early Holocene,by which the potential of cold-water coral for high-resolution paleoceanographic reconstruction is tested.

Abstract:87Sr/86Sr ratios, δ13C and δ18O values, and concentrations of Sr and Mn in cold seep carbonates collected from the South China Sea and the Panoche Hills (California, USA) are determined in this study. The carbon isotopic values of carbonates reflect different carbon sources. Carbonate samples with high Sr concentrations and low Mn/Sr ratios are considered to have very little or no influence by diagenetic alteration. Sr isotopes of seep carbonates from both the South China Sea and the Panoche Hills record the information on the original seawater or pore water. Together with the published Sr isotopic data of cold seep carbonates in Italy, we applied the Sr isotope stratigraphy (SIS) and SIS LOWESS Version 3 curve to calibrate the ages for the cold seep carbonates. These ages are consistent with their sedimentary strata, indicating that the cold seep carbonates, with high Sr concentration and low Mn/Sr ratio are good candidates for dating by their Sr isotopic compositions.
