Abstract:A highly selective chemosensor (1) bearing three salphen pockets fulfilled the recognition of Cu2+ via obvious color change and significant absorption enhancement upon the introduction of Cu2+. Additionally, the coordination of 1 and Cu2+ led to the formation of coordination polymer which further generated nanospheres, as evidenced by SEM, TEM, AFM, PXRD, and EDX investigations.

Abstract:With the expansion and deepening of scientific research, dual-functional or multifunctional materials are urgently needed to replace those for single application. Herein, a fluorescence sensing system based on an In(III)-organic complex with in situ Lewis acid sites has been constructed, exhibiting high sensitivity for the detection of Fe(III) ions with a low detection limit of 3.95 μM and a short response time of within 10 s. It is noteworthy that the quenched fluorescence of the Fe(III)-incorporated sample could be reopened linearly with an increase of alkalinity, followed by the reactivation of its functionality to identify Fe(III) ions, forming an alternate detection cycle for Fe(III) and pH with off-on-off fluorescent switch characteristics. Considering its unique molecular recognition capability, an advanced three-input (Fe(III), EDTA, and OH-) and two-output (B440 and G489) Boolean logic operation comprising BUFF, NOT, OR, and AND logic gates was integrated, possessing potential applications in intelligent multianalyte sensing systems.

Abstract:A dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence pH sensor was fabricated from carbon dots (CDs). It exhibited a pH response via both fluorescence and visible colorimetric observation. The CDs solution changed from red to yellow when the pH changed from acid to alkaline. Meanwhile, the color of pH test paper that incorporated the CDs changed from purple-red to orange and then to yellow. The CD fluorescence maximum was at 630 nm in acid solution and 590 nm under neutral and alkaline conditions. The fluorescence of the pH test paper changed from red to orange and then to yellow, which was better than that of the pure CDs solution. The CDs exhibited highly selective and reversible fluorescence quenching with respect to Cu2+ ions because of strong binding and fast chelating kinetics. There was a linear relationship between fluorescence quenching and Cu2+ concentration, suggesting the other promising practical usage of this sensing system. The versatile CDs-based pH sensor thus provides a basis for developing sustainable and fast-response dual-mode pH meters as well as Cu2+ sensing.
A Fluoride-Selective Colorimetric and Fluorescent Chemosensor and Its Use for the Design of Molecular-Scale Logic Devices

Abstract:A simple and efficient chemosensor 1 was synthesized by reacting thiosernicarbazide with 1-naphthaldehyde. It was found that the sensor is highly selective toward fluoride anions in both UV-vis and fluorescence channels in DMSO solution. Especially, the spectral responses of the sensor along with a visible color change can be switched back and forth by successively adding F- and HSO4- anions into the DMSO solution, which may be represented by a complementary "IMPLICATION/INHIBIT" logic gate at molecular level employing both the ions as the chemical inputs. Based on such a reversible and reproducible sensing system, we designed a molecular-scale sequential memory unit displaying "Writing-Reading-Erasing-Reading" and "Multi-write" functions in the form of binary logic. Abstract:A BODIPY-based colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor 1 anchored with dipyridylamino (DPA) receptor has been designed, synthesized and characterized. It exhibited a simultaneous sensitive recognition for Cu2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions. With the addition of these three kinds of metal ions into 1 in CH3CN, its initial absorption maximum displayed obvious blue shifts, and the color changes of the solution could be clearly observed by naked eyes. Besides, the fluorescence intensity was significantly enhanced accompanied with the appearance of new emission peaks at 587 nm for Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions and 545 nm for Cu2+ ions. These results were attributed to the π-deconjugation between N-pyridyl and the BODIPY group due to the binding of metal ions with the BODIPY and DPA groups. Based on the sensing behaviors of 1, three logic gates (OR, INHIBT and combinational logic gate) were constructed correspondingly.

Abstract:In this work, a hydrophilic naphthalimide-based fluorescence chemosensor (sensor 1) was synthesized for Cu2+ recognition, in which 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol was introduced to improve the hydrophily and Schiff base acted as the multidentate ligand for Cu2+. The effect factors, sensing mechanism and regenerability of sensor 1 for Cu2+ sensing were systematically investigated. It was found that sensor 1 displayed a long emission wavelength of 532 nm upon excited in visible light region (436 nm), and the good water solubility made it utilized in aqueous media. It could selectively react with Cu2+ over other common metal ions to form a 2:1 complex within 1 min and result in significant fluorescence quench. The fluorescence change was linear to 0.5-10.0 μmol L-1 of Cu2+ with a low detection limit of 3.74 × 10-8 mol L-1. Sensor 1 has been successfully utilized for analyzing Cu2+ in water samples as well as imaging cellular Cu2+. Moreover, in view of fluorescence "on-off-on" switches of sensor 1 induced by Cu2+ and EDTA, an IMPLICATION logic gate was constructed based on fluorescence mode with Cu2+ and EDTA as inputs.

Abstract:A new fluorescent probe, salicylaldehyde rhodamine B hydrazone (1), was synthesized and displayed selective Cu(II)-amplified absorbance and fluorescence emission above 500 nm in neutral buffered media. Upon the addition of Cu(II), the spirolactam ring of 1 was opened and a 1:1 metal-ligand complex was formed. The detection of Cu(II) by 1 at a lower micromolar level was successful even in buffered water.

Abstract:A fluorescent chemosensor for fast detection of Cu 2+ ion has been established based on a novel pyridine-appended half-salamo-based compound. The chemosensor PHS is easy to synthesize, eco-friendly and cost effective. It demonstrates an excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu 2+ ion in the mixed DMF : H 2 O (9 : 1, V / V, pH = 7.2) solution by change in fluorescence intensity. Calculated through the Origin Program, relevant experimental results were obtained, such as the limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the association constant ( K a ). Compared with other reported probes, this probe showed a lower detection limit and provided a relatively simple and effective method for the detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, plausible mechanism for the interaction of the probe PHS with Cu 2+ was proposed according to the fluorescence titration experiments, Job's plot, and DFT calculations.

Abstract:A new ratiometric fluorescent sensor for Cu(2+), WLN, has been developed via integrating a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore with 8-aminoquinoline. WLN exhibits a highly selective ratiometric response to Cu(2+) over other transition metal ions in aqueous media. Moreover, its practical ratiometric imaging ability for intracellular Cu(2+) has been confirmed in human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7 cells) using a confocal microscope.

Abstract:A simple, fast response and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescent chemical sensor 2,2′-(hydrazine-1,2-diylidenebis(methaneylylidene))diphenol (SX) based on o-hydroxybenzaldehyde had been designed and synthesized. Interestingly, the increase of water content, the color of the SX solution changed from colorless to bright yellow in solution, and the chemical sensor SX showed the unique AIE properties. The chemical sensor SX exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity to Zn2+ without Cu2+ in DMSO/H2O (4:1, v/v) solution, and the limit of detection was 6. 8 × 10−8 M. In addition, the in situ generated [SX + Zn2+] system was used for the relay detection of Cu2+ without separation and purification and exhibited a new fluorescence quenching signal under the same conditions, and limit of detection [SX + Zn2+] to Cu2+ was 2.3 × 10−8 M. Furthermore, the chemical sensor SX had been successfully applied to detect and analyze Zn2+ and relay detect Cu2+ in environmental water samples.

Abstract:A triazole-based novel bis Schiff base colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor (L) has been designed, synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, ESI-MS, FTIR spectra and DFT studies. The receptor L showed selective and sensitive colorimetric sensing ability for Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions by changing color from colorless to yellow and light yellow respectively in CH3OH-tris-buffer (1 : 1, v/v). However, it displayed strong fluorescence enhancement upon the addition of both Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions, attributed to the blocking of PET. The fluorometric detection limits for Cu2+ and Pb2+ were found to be 12 × 10-7 M and 9 × 10-7 M and the colorimetric detection limits were 3.7 × 10-6 M and 1.2 × 10-6 M respectively; which are far below the permissible concentration in drinking water determined by WHO. Moreover, it was found that chemosensor L worked as a reversible fluorescence probe towards Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions by the accumulation of S2- and EDTA respectively. Based on the physicochemical and analytical methods like ESI-mass spectrometry, Job plot, FT-IR, 1H-NMR spectra and DFT studies the detection mechanism may be explained as metal coordination, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) as well as an internal charge transfer (ICT) process. The sensor could work in a pH span of 4.0-12.0. The chemosensor L shows its application potential in the detection of Cu2+ and Pb2+ in real samples, living cells and building of molecular logic gate.

Abstract:Using the aldehyde amine condensation procedure and the triphenylamine group as the skeleton structure, the new triphenylamine-aromatic aldehyde-succinylhydrazone probe molecule DHBYMH was created. A newly created acylhydrazone probe was structurally characterized by mass spectrometry (MS), NMR, and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Fluorescence and UV spectroscopy were used to examine DHBYMH's sensing capabilities for metal ions. Notably, DHBYMH achieved a detection limit of 1.62 × 10-7 M by demonstrating exceptional selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu2+ ions in an optimum sample solvent system (DMSO/H2O, (v/v = 7/3); pH = 7.0; cysteine (Cys) concentration: 1 × 10-4 M). NMR titration, high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis, and DFT computation were used to clarify the response mechanism. Ultimately, predicated on DHBYMH's reversible identification of Cu2+ ions in the presence of EDTA, a molecular logic gate was successfully designed.

Abstract:A dual-function optical chemosensor (RBF) was designed and easily synthesized by condensation reaction of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and rhodamine B hydrazide. RBF exhibited highly sensitive, highly selective and quick response to acidic pH. The fluorescence intensity of RBF exhibited a more than 41-fold increase within the pH range from 7.50 to 3.73 with a pKa value of 5.02, which could be successfully applied to monitor intracellular pH in living PC12 cells and HeLa cells. Additionally, the spectroscopy of UV-Vis and EDTA-adding experiments indicated that RBF was a highly selective and reversible colorimetric chemosensor for Cu(2+) in Tris-HCl (10mM, pH=7.2) aqueous buffer solution as well as other metal ions had no obvious interference. Moreover, RBF has been successfully applied to detect Cu(2+) in real water samples.

Abstract:A ferrocene unit is introduced into the salicylaldehyde Rhodamine 6G hydrazone with an alkynyl group to constitute a new chemosensor, R6G-FC, for specifically sensing Cu2+ over other metal ions with multisignals. Upon interaction with Cu2+ in aqueous solution, R6G-FC expresses a detectable fluorescence enhancement along with changes in UV–vis absorption spectra and electrochemical parameters due to the binding-induced spirolactam ring-opening process in Rhodamine 6G. The complexation process between R6G-FC and Cu2+ can be carried out within a wide pH range in a short response time and with a good reversibility. R6G-FC also exhibits an excellent performance in sensing Cu2+ in the “dip-stick” method with an evident color gradation, and confocal fluorescence microscopy imaging results reveal that R6G-FC can be used to visualize Cu2+ in living HeLa cells with low cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Four salicylidene-based dual responsive chemosensors 1,5-bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde)carbohydrazone (R1), 1,5-bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde) thiocarbohydrazone (R2), 1,5-bis(3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde)carbohydrazone (R3) and 1,5-bis(3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde) thiocarbohydrazone (R4) were synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of R1 and R3 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique, which crystallized in the orthorhombic Pbcn and monoclinic P21/n space groups, respectively. The chemosensor molecules were investigated for the recognition properties against the selected cations (K+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe3+ and Al3+) and anions (F @#x0305; , Cl @#x0305; , Br @#x0305; , I @#x0305; , HSO4 @#x0305; , PO4 @#x0305; , ClO @#x0305; , N3 @#x0305; and NO3 @#x0305; ) by colorimetric, absorption, fluorescence, 1H NMR and theoretical studies. The sensor molecules showed colorimetric responses for Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+ cations and F @#x0305; anion. Interestingly, the Zn2+ and Al3+ cations showed only ̀turn oń fluorometric response, whereas the F @#x0305; anion showed both colorimetric and fluorometric responses. The binding constants were determined using Benesi-Hildebrand (B-H) equation from fluorescence titrations, and found to be higher for R3 towards Al3+ cation (2.03 × 106 M–1) with low limit of detection (1.79 M), and for R4 towards F @#x0305; anion (5.13 × 105 M–1) with low limit of detection (5.23 M). The chemosensors established 1:2 and 1:1 binding stoichiometry with sensed cations and anion, respectively, as confirmed by Jobsʹs plots. The computational studies show lower band gap of HOMO-LUMO when the chemosensors bind with sensed inorganic ions compared to the free chemosensors. Furthermore, the observed fluorescent behaviour of Zn2+ and Al3+ cations have motivated us to investigate the practical applications in live cell-imaging of zebrafish embryos, as well as in the development of molecular logic gate.

Abstract:A new rhodamine B derivative colorimetric and fluorescent sensor (1) was synthesized by condensation reaction of rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, which showed reversible and highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu2+ over other examined metal ions. Abstract:A highly-selective colorimetric chemosensor (CS1) for Cu2+ detection is prepared and characterized. This Cu2+ sensor can act as a potential probe towards ClO−, by taking advantage of the oxidation property of hypochlorite and different coordinating property of Cu+ and Cu2+ with CS1. Upon addition of ClO−, the absorption maximum band of CS1 in the presence of Cu+ in CH3CN/H2O (4:1, v/v) shows a large red shift from 398 to 552 nm (Δ = 154 nm), and a visually color change from orange to purple is very easy to observe by naked-eyes, while other commonly-coexisting anions can not induce such similar changes. CS1 mimic an AND logic gate function with Cu+ and ClO− as inputs and A552 nm/A398 nm as output (A = absorbance), and this function can be easily reset by S2−.
