Abstract:The fruit and vegetable picking has posed a great challenge on the production and markets during the harvest season. Manual picking cannot fully meet the rapid requirements of each market, mainly due to the high labor-intensive and time-consuming tasks, even the aging and shortage of agricultural labor force in recent years. Alternatively, smart robotics can be an efficient solution to increase the planting areas for the markets in combination with changes in cultivation, preservation, and processing technology. However, some improvements still need to be performed on these picking robots. To document the progress in and current status of this field, this study performed a bibliometric analysis. This analysis evaluated the current performance characteristics of various fruit and vegetable picking robots for better prospects in the future. Five perspectives were proposed covering the robotic arms, end effectors, vision systems, picking environments, and picking performance for the large-scale mechanized production of fruits and vegetables in modern agriculture. The current problems of fruit and vegetable picking robots were summarized. Finally, the outlook of the fruit and vegetable picking robots prospected from four aspects: structured environment for fruit planting, the algorithm of recognition and positioning, picking efficiency, and cost-saving picking robots. This study comprehensively assesses the current research status, thus helping researchers steer their projects or locate potential collaborators.

Abstract:In modern agricultural production, orchards, as one of the important agricultural fields, are facing difficulties such as labor shortage, low production efficiency, and rising costs. To cope with these difficulties, orchard robots were introduced as an emerging technology. With the rapid development of robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, the application of intelligent robots in the agricultural field is becoming more and more mature. Advances in sensing technology, navigation technology, image recognition and other technologies have provided technical support for the research and application of orchard robots. Through the precise operation of orchard robots, precise management of orchard crops can be realized, including precise fertilization, pest and disease monitoring, directional irrigation, etc., so as to improve the yield and quality of orchards. This increases production efficiency, reduces costs, increases yields, and drives agriculture towards sustainable development. This paper combs the research status of picking robots by combining literature collation and market research, shows the scientific research results of various types of orchard picking robots at home and abroad, makes an in-depth analysis of the existing problems, and discusses the basic system composition of orchard picking robots Existing problems, and propose solutions to the problems found. Orchard picking robot has a huge application space in China, but due to the difficulty of research and development, there are still few economical and practical orchard picking robot products at home and abroad. Abstract:Picking robots are widely used in the harvesting of various agricultural products, which can significantly reduce the labor cost in agricultural production and solve the problem of labor shortage in agricultural production. Computer vision technology can identify ripe melons and fruits from their natural growth environment, which is the key for picking robot to achieve target positioning and coordinate manipulator. In this paper, the method of designing robot picking experiment platform based on computer vision is proposed, and intelligent picking is realized by constructing robot picking experiment platform. The experimental results show that the robot picking experimental platform based on computer vision can solve the problem of low picking efficiency of the previous platform, and can realize the efficient picking of different fruits and melons, which provides a research basis for the picking robot to better meet the actual demand of agricultural production.

Abstract:The excellent performance of fruit and vegetable picking robots is usually contributed by the reasonable structure of end-effector and recognition–localization methods with high accuracy. As a result, efforts are focused on two aspects, and diverse structures of end-effector, target recognition methods as well as their combinations are yielded continuously. A good understanding for the working principle, advantages, limitations, and the adaptability in respective fields is helpful to design picking robots. Therefore, depending on different grasping ways, separating methods, structures, materials, and driving modes, main characteristics existing in traditional schemes will be depicted firstly. According to technical routes, advantages, potential applications, and challenges, underactuated manipulators and soft manipulators representing future development are then summarized systematically. Secondly, partial recognition and localization methods are also demonstrated. Specifically, current recognition manners adopting the single-feature, multi-feature fusion and deep learning are explained in view of their advantages, limitations, and successful instances. In the field of 3D localization, active vision based on the structured light, laser scanning, time of flight, and radar is reflected through the respective applications. Also, another 3D localization method called passive vision is also evaluated by advantages, limitations, the degree of automation, reconstruction effects, and the application scenario, such as monocular vision, binocular vision, and multiocular vision. Finally portrayed from structural development, recognition, and localization methods, it is possible to develop future end-effectors for fruit and vegetable picking robots with superior characteristics containing the less driving element, rigid–flexible–bionic coupling soft manipulators, simple control program, high efficiency, low damage, low cost, high versatility, and high recognition accuracy in all-season picking tasks.

Abstract:With global population growth and rising labor costs, the development of agricultural picking robots is crucial to improving agricultural productivity and reducing costs. A combination of deep learning technology and traditional vision technology has revolutionized the visual perception capability of agricultural picking robots. This has enabled robots to achieve more accurate fruit identification and localization in complex environments. In this paper, we review the visual perception technology of picking robots based on deep learning, which is primarily divided into two core technologies for fruit recognition and 3D reconstruction and localization during fruit picking. Firstly, we analyze the application of deep learning models in fruit recognition. We discuss how to integrate and process the feature information of fruits through deep learning neural networks to improve recognition accuracy and review the development of more typical deep learning models in the past three years. Secondly, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of several types of traditional stereo vision technology. We synthesize the advantages and disadvantages of several types of current stereo vision technology that are more widely used. We also analyze how deep learning technology has optimized the model and combined it with traditional stereo vision technology in recent years to achieve the three-dimensional reconstruction and precise positioning of fruits. Finally, we summarize the main challenges of current picking robots, mainly the accuracy of the deep learning network, the difficulty of acquiring and calibrating the original image set, and the generality of the models carried by the picking robots. Additionally, we look forward to the future development direction.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economy and the increasing improvement of agricultural production level, people’s demand for fruits is also increasing year by year. China is the largest fruit production and consumption country in the world. According to relevant statistics reported for China, by the end of 2019, the total amount of various fruits sold had reached about 270 million tons, with apples accounting for 48% of the global output and pears accounting for 69% of the national total output. However, China’s fruit picking is still dominated by manual picking process, which takes a lot of manpower and time to complete, therefore resulting in low fruit picking efficiency. Some farmers are unable to complete fruit picking in a short time, resulting in a large number of fruits unable to be listed, resulting in huge losses. To solve this problem, this paper focuses on the visual recognition and path planning for intelligent fruit-picking robot. Using robot to complete fruit picking is the best way at present. This paper establishes a picking robot recognition and positioning system based on stereo vision, which is used to identify and locate the fruits planted in the orchard area. The coordinate error of the target point of the intelligent fruit-picking robot coordinate system is less than 10 mm, which has high accuracy. Then, the path of intelligent fruit-picking robot is planned based on visual feedback algorithm and biological stimulation neural network. Our empirical evaluations suggest that the proposed robot walks in the planting park in the shape of “zigzag” and realizes full-coverage path planning after 6 turns. The results show the efficiency of the intelligent method.

Abstract:In recent years, the fruit industry has become an important part of agricultural development, and fruit harvesting is a key stage in the production process. However, picking fruits during the harvest season is always a major challenge. In order to solve the challenges of time-consuming, costly, and inefficient fruit picking, researchers have conducted a lot of studies on automatic fruit picking equipment. Existing picking technologies still require further research and development to improve efficiency and reduce fruit damage. Aiming at the efficient and non-destructive picking of fruits, this paper reviews machine vision and mechanical fruit picking technology and the current research status, including the current application status, equipment structure, working principle, picking process, and experimental results. As a promising tool, machine vision technology has been widely researched and applied due to its low hardware cost and rich visual information. With the development of science and technology, automated fruit picking technology integrates information technology, integrates automatic perception, transmission, control, and operation, etc., saves manpower costs, and continuously promotes the development of modern agriculture in the direction of refinement of equipment technology, automation, and intelligence. Finally, the challenges faced by automated fruit picking are discussed, and future development is looked forward to with a view to contributing to its sustainable development.

Abstract:For the standardized apple orchards in China, which are mainly dwarfed and densely planted, firstly, according to the spatial distribution characteristics of fruits within the tree canopy, a clamping-pull-off apple picking robot was developed by analyzing the parameters of apple cultivation and picking methods, in order to replace the manual harvesting operation. Then, the D-H method was used to establish the kinematic Equations of the apple-picking robot, the forward and inverse kinematic calculations were carried out, and the Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the workspace of the robot. Through the robot picking task planning and the simulation of the trajectory of the robotic arm, the scheme of the robot's picking strategy was given, and MATLAB software was applied to simulate the motion trajectory as well as to verify the feasibility of the trajectory planning scheme and the picking strategy. Finally, an apple-picking test bed was set up, the corresponding picking control system program was designed, and 45 apples were selected for picking tests. The results showed that during the robot's picking process, the average time for picking each fruit was 7.59 seconds, the fruit recognition success rate was 86.67%, and the picking damage rate was 5.13%.

Abstract:Litchi is a highly favored fruit with high economic value. Mechanical automation of litchi picking is a key link for improving the quality and efficiency of litchi harvesting. Our research team has been conducting experiments to develop a visual-based litchi picking robot. However, in the early physical prototype experiments, we found that, although picking points were successfully located, litchi picking failed due to random obstructions of the picking points. In this study, the physical prototype of the litchi picking robot previously developed by our research team was upgraded by integrating a visual system for actively removing obstructions. A framework for an artificial intelligence algorithm was proposed for a robot vision system to locate picking points and to identify obstruction situations at picking points. An intelligent control algorithm was developed to control the obstruction removal device to implement obstruction removal operations by combining with the obstruction situation at the picking point. Based on the spatial redundancy of a picking point and the obstruction, the feeding posture of the robot was determined. The experiment showed that the precision of segmenting litchi fruits and branches was 88.1%, the recognition success rate of picking point recognition was 88%, the average error of picking point localization was 2.8511 mm, and an overall success rate of end-effector feeding was 81.3%. These results showed that the developed litchi picking robot could effectively implement obstruction removal.

Abstract:With the aging population and increasing labor costs, traditional manual harvesting methods have become less economically efficient. Consequently, research into fully automated harvesting using selective harvesting robots for cherry tomatoes has become a hot topic. However, most of the current research is focused on individual harvesting of large tomatoes, and there is less research on the development of complete systems for harvesting cherry tomatoes in clusters. The purpose of this study is to develop a harvesting robot system capable of picking tomato clusters by cutting their fruit‐bearing pedicels and to evaluate the robot prototype in real greenhouse environments. First, to enhance the grasping stability, a novel end‐effector was designed. This end‐effector utilizes a cam mechanism to achieve asynchronous actions of cutting and grasping with only one power source. Subsequently, a visual perception system was developed to locate the cutting points of the pedicels. This system is divided into two parts: rough positioning of the fruits in the far‐range view and accurate positioning of the cutting points of the pedicels in the close‐range view. Furthermore, it possesses the capability to adaptively infer the approaching pose of the end‐effector based on point cloud features extracted from fruit‐bearing pedicels and stems. Finally, a prototype of the tomato‐harvesting robot was assembled for field trials. The test results demonstrate that in tomato clusters with unobstructed pedicels, the localization success rates for the cutting points were 88.5% and 83.7% in the two greenhouses, respectively, while the harvesting success rates reached 57.7% and 55.4%, respectively. The average cycle time to harvest a tomato cluster was 24 s. The experimental results prove the potential for commercial application of the developed tomato‐harvesting robot and through the analysis of failure cases, discuss directions for future work.

Abstract:In view of the continuous increase in labor costs for complex picking tasks, there is an urgent demand for intelligent harvesting robots in the global fresh fruit cultivation industry. Fruit visual information is essential to guide robotic harvesting. However, obtaining accurate visual information about the target is critical in complex agricultural environments. The main challenges include the image color distortion under changeable natural light, occlusions from the interlaced plant organs (stems, leaves, and fruits), and the picking point location on fruits with variable shapes and poses. On top of summarizing the current status of typical fresh fruit harvesting robots, this paper outlined the state-of-the-art advance of visual information acquisition technology, including image acquisition in the natural environment, fruit recognition from the complex backgrounds, target stereo locating and measurement, and fruit search among the plants. It then analyzed existing problems and raised future potential research trends from two aspects, multiple images fusion and self-improving algorithm model.

Abstract:Picking cherry tomatoes is a time-consuming and labour-intensive task, and robots are an alternative solution to address this issue. The end effector is a key component of the harvesting robot, and it is crucial for achieving automated harvesting of cherry tomatoes. To develop efficient end effectors for picking robots, this study proposes a method to aid end effector design by evaluating and analysing picking patterns of cherry tomatoes. Based on manual picking methods, four potential robot picking patterns are proposed: pressing–breaking combination, pulling, pulling–rotating combination and twisting. A dynamic measurement system based on multi-sensor fusion was developed to measure applied forces and angles during the picking process. Based on the selected picking patterns, two pneumatically controlled picking end effectors, namely, a vacuum end effector and a rotating end effector, were designed. The results of the dynamic measurement experiment and the picking pattern evaluation indicated that the recommended order of picking patterns was twisting, pulling, pulling–rotating combination and pressing–breaking combination in descending order. The picking performance test results of the end effector revealed that for the vacuum end effector, the picking success rate was 66.3 %, whereas the detachment failure was the main reason for picking failure. For the rotating end effector, the picking success rate was 70.1 %, whereas localisation failure and collision were the main reasons for picking failure. This study provides a valuable reference and theoretical analysis basis for the development of cherry tomato picking robots and the design of the end effector in the future.

Abstract:In the development of digital agriculture, agricultural robots play a unique role and confer numerous advantages in farming production. From the invention of the first industrial robots in the 1950s, robots have begun to capture the attention of both research and industry. Thanks to the recent advancements in computer science, sensing, and control approaches, agricultural robots have experienced a rapid evolution, relying on various cutting-edge technologies for different application scenarios. Indeed, significant refinements have been achieved by integrating perception, decision-making, control, and execution techniques. However, most agricultural robots continue to require intelligence solutions, limiting them to small-scale applications without quantity production because of their lack of integration with artificial intelligence. Therefore, to help researchers and engineers grasp the prevalent research status of agricultural robots, in this review we refer to more than 100 pieces of literature according to the category of agricultural robots under discussion. In this context, we bring together diverse agricultural robot research statuses and applications and discuss the benefits and challenges involved in further applications. Finally, directional indications are put forward with respect to the research trends relating to agricultural robots.

Abstract:As one of the key problem for the robotic harvesting, the real-time recognition and localization of fruits and vegetables in field have drawn wide attention. First, the development of common hardware and algorithms for the recognition of fruits and vegetables was reviewed. For the image segmentation of fruits and vegetables, researches on image preprocessing, color feature selecting, image segmentation designing and image post processing were summarized and analyzed. For the recognition of fruits and vegetables, researches on common algorithms, recognition algorithms for clustered objects and for occluded objects were reviewed. Second, active and passive range finder methods which have been used commonly in the localization of fruits and vegetables were analyzed and compared. Moreover, stereo matching methods used in the passive range finder methods for fruits and vegetables were analyzed and compared, too. Finally, existing problems in researches on the recognition and localization for fruits and vegetables in field were analyzed, and research prospects were also presented.

Abstract:The utilization of machine vision and its associated algorithms improves the efficiency, functionality, intelligence, and remote interactivity of harvesting robots in complex agricultural environments. Machine vision and its associated emerging technology promise huge potential in advanced agricultural applications. However, machine vision and its precise positioning still have many technical difficulties, making it difficult for most harvesting robots to achieve true commercial applications. This article reports the application and research progress of harvesting robots and vision technology in fruit picking. The potential applications of vision and quantitative methods of localization, target recognition, 3D reconstruction, and fault tolerance of complex agricultural environment are focused, and fault-tolerant technology designed for utilization with machine vision and robotic systems are also explored. The two main methods used in fruit recognition and localization are reviewed, including digital image processing technology and deep learning-based algorithms. The future challenges brought about by recognition and localization success rates are identified: target recognition in the presence of illumination changes and occlusion environments; target tracking in dynamic interference-laden environments, 3D target reconstruction, and fault tolerance of the vision system for agricultural robots. In the end, several open research problems specific to recognition and localization applications for fruit harvesting robots are mentioned, and the latest development and future development trends of machine vision are described.
