Abstract:The absorption and fluorescence properties of a series of 18 indocarbocyanine dyes in organic solvents have been determined. The wavelengths of the absorption and fluorescence maxima, the fluorescence lifetimes and the fluorescence quantum yields relative to the benzo‐15‐crown‐5‐substituted phthalocyanine have been measured. The results are discussed in relation to the molecular structures or the dye studied.

Abstract:Five new compounds with mixed-ligand formulated as (H4bptc)(phen) (1), [In(phen)2Cl2](H4bptc)(NO3)(H2O) (2), [In(Hbptc)(phen)(H2O)]2 (3), In(2,6-pydc)(phen)(H2O)Cl (4), and {[In(2,6-pydc)(Ox)0.5(H2O)2](H2O)}2 (5) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Compounds 1–5 display white, green and blue fluorescence at 298K in the solid state, respectively. It is shown that 1 assumes solvent-dependent photoluminescence. By contrast, the different polarities of solvents do not alter the luminescence position of 3 and 5. The thermogravimetric curves show that binuclear compounds 3 and 5 have excellent thermal stability, whose structures are stable up to 190 and 272°C, respectively.

Abstract:Giutaconaldehydedianilide hydrochioride (Ⅱ ) has been synthesized in 8 8. 8 % yield. By condensing 2, 3, 3 trimethylindolenine methiodide with Ⅱ, 1, 3, 3, 1', 3', 3' - hexamethylindotricarbocyanine infrared dye (Ⅲ ) can be obtained in 43. 9% yield. The final product was confirmed by melting point, elementary analysis, IR and ~1(H-)NMR spectra. The electron absorption spectrum of Ⅲ showed that the maximum absorption is at 748nm with e_(max) of 1. 7 x 10~5L· mol~(-1) cm~(-1). It is easily solubilized in some common solvents , e. g., dichioromethane, tetrahydrofuran, acetone, DMF,acetonitrile and chloroform.

Abstract:Two new 8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl) substituted boron-dipyrromethene (BDP) dyes: 1,2,6,7-tetraethyl-4,4-difluoro-3,5-dimethyl-8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (5) and 4,4-difluoro-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexamethyl-8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (6) have been synthesized and their crystal structures are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The torsion angles of 8-phenyl ring and the indacene plane are 79.61° for 5 and 87.56° for 6, respectively. The absorption and steady-state fluorescence properties in different solvents have been investigated. The fluorescence quantum yields of the two dyes are lower in more polar solvents, which can be ascribed to the intramolecular charge transfer from the aniline to the BDP unit. Protonation of the aniline moiety at low pH in MeOH–H2O (1:1 v/v) solution causes a large fluorescence enhancement. The pKa values calculated from the pH dependent fluorescence emission spectra are 3.14 for 5 and 3.09 for 6, respectively. They are suitable as pH probes excitable with visible light.

Abstract:The single crystal X-ray structure of indodicarbocyanine dye has been determined at room temperature and its chemical structure confirmed. A unit cell consists of four organic cations, four iodide anions and four H2O molecules; H2O molecules are involved into the unit cell during the crystallization. Hydrogen bond interaction probably exists between the iodide anion and a H2O molecule. The N-atoms are in a cis-type arrangement with respect to the methine chain, and the distributions of bond lengths indicate extended delocation of π-electrons. The molecules are stacked face-to-face to form a column along the b axis direction, and some dimerization is observed.

Abstract:A novel compound 2,6-diphenyl-1,5-diaza-1,5-dihydro-s-indacene (Indacene) was synthesized by means of the Madelung reaction starting from 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine. The structure was characterised by NMR, IR, MS, and elemental analysis. The UV/Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra were investigated. The electroluminescent behaviour of the new compound was studied in ITO/PEDOT-PSS/Indacene-CNPPP/Mg–Ag(10:1)/Ag devices. The electroluminescent maximum was recorded at 504nm corresponding to a greenish blue emission. The results demonstrate the potential application of Indacene in OLEDs.

Abstract:Oxadisilole-fused 1H-benzo[f]- and 1H-naphtho[2,3-f]indazoles have been synthesized by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of benzo- or naphtho-oxabicycloalkenes with nitrile imines generated in situ from N-arylhydrazonoyl chlorides followed by deoxygenation and aromatization. The photophysical, redox and thermal properties of these compounds have been characterized. Some of the indazoles show potential as deep-blue emitters for OLED applications as a result of their high fluorescence quantum yields and good thermal stabilities.

Abstract:Three novel indolo[3,2-b]carbazoles derivatives were successfully synthesized by condensation reaction and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy methods, which belong to donor-π-acceptor systems comprising an indolo[3,2-b]carbazole group as an electron donor and two benzothiazole rings as electron acceptors. The thermal, electrochemical and photophysical properties of the compounds were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis combined with electrochemistry, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. On the other hand, the geometries, molecular orbitals, charge-injection and transport properties were determined by quantum chemical calculations. The results show that the compounds synthesized exhibit good thermal stability and high fluorescence quantum yields, indicating the potential application as optoelectronic materials.
Photoelectric Conversion Properties of Four Novel Carboxylated Hemicyanine Dyes on Tio2 Electrode

Abstract:Four hemicyanine derivatives, 2-[4-(N-ethyl-N-carboxyethyl)amino] phenylethenyl-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium iodide (BIDC1), 2-[4-(N,N-dicarboxyethyl)amino]phenylethenyl-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium iodide (BIDC2), 2-[4-(N-ethyl-N-carboxyethyl)amino]phenylethenyl-1,1,3-trimethyl-1H-benz[e]indolium iodide (BIDC3) and 2-[4-(N,N-dicarboxyethyl)amino]phenylethenyl-1,1,3-trimethyl-1H-benz[e]indolium iodide (BIDC4), have been synthesized and identified with regard to their structures and electrochemical properties. It is found that the absorption spectra of BIDC3 and BIDC4 are broader than that of BIDC1 and BIDC2 because the former two have one more benzene ring on the electron acceptor side. Upon adsorption on a TiO2 electrode, the absorption spectra of the four BIDC dyes are all broadened forward to both red and blue sides compared with their respective spectra in ethanol solution. BIDC2 ( or BIDC4), bearing two carboxyl groups, has about two ( or three) times more adsorption and a broader absorption spectrum on TiO2 film compared with BIDC1 ( or BIDC3), which consequently leads to a better light-to-electricity conversion property. Among the four hemicyanine dyes, BIDC4 generated the highest photoelectric conversion yield of 4.9%, with a short-circuit photocurrent of 21.4 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 424 mV, and a fill factor of 0.49 under irradiation with 90.0 mW cm(-2) white light from a Xe lamp.

Abstract:Three indolinospironaphthopyrans: 1',3'-dihydro-1',3',3'-trimethyl-spiro[2H-indole-2,3-(3H) naphtho [2,1-b]pyran], 1',3'-dihydro-3',3'-dimethyl-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-spiro[2H-indole-2,3-(3H)naphtho[2,1-b]pyran], 1',3'-dihydro-3',3'-dimethyl-1-(5-iodo-3-oxypentyl)-spiro [2H-indole-2,3-(3H)naphtho[2,1-b]pyran] were synthesized, and their photochromic reactions were studied using nanosecond laser photolysis technique. Photolysis of these compounds in acetonitrile and in tetrahydrofuran leads to the formation of the long-lived photomerocyanine (PMC) as the predominant photoproduct. The formation of the PMC occurs owing to C-O bond opening, mainly directly from the excited single state of the spiropyran(SP). From the absorption bands, it has been speculated that the substituents of the nitrogen atom of the indole ring influence the structural characteristics of the PMC mainly through steric hindrance effects. A potential energy surface model is established to explain the results.

Abstract:Two new indium coordination polymers formulated as [In(BPDA)(phen)Cl]n (1) and [In(BDC)(HBDC)·2DMF]n (2) (H2BPDA=2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, C14H10O4; phen=1,10-phenanthroline, C12H8N2; H2BDC=1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, C8H6O4; DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide, C3H7NO) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR), thermal gravimetric analyses (TG) and luminescent studies. Molecular structural analyses reveal that complex 1 exhibits an indium-2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylate helical chained structure decorated with 1,10-phenanthroline, and complex 2 possesses a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure constructed by 1,3-benzenedicarboxylate ligands and InO6 octahedra, which has a (4,4) topological structure. Blue-green emission at 480nm (λex=340nm) for 1, intense blue-green emission at 492nm, green emission at 535nm, and yellow-green emission at 576nm (λex=340nm) for 2 are observed in the solid state at room temperature.
Tetrazaisoindigos:Serpentine Syntheses and Their Expected and Unexpected Photophysical and Electronic Properties

Abstract:Isoindigo, an electron-withdrawing building block for polymeric field-effect transistors, has long been considered to be non-fluorescent. Moreover, using electron-deficient heterocycle to replace the phenyl ring in the isoindigo core for better electron transport behaviour is synthetically challenging. Here we report the syntheses of a series of tetrazaisoindigos, including pyrazinoisoindigo (PyrII), pyrimidoisoindigo (PymII) and their hybrid (PyrPymII), and the investigation on their photophysical and electric properties. Proper flanking groups need to be chosen to stabilize these highly electron-deficient bislactams. Both PyrII and PymII derivatives show lower LUMO energy levels than that of naphthalene bisimide (NDI). Interestingly, PyrII is instinctively unstable and can be easily reduced, while both PymII derivatives are stable. More surprisingly, PymII derivatives are highly fluorescent and their photoluminescence quantum yields are around 40 %, 133 times higher than that of reported isoindigo derivatives. UV-vis spectroscopic results and theoretical calculations show that strong intramolecular hydrogen-bond exists in PymII, which prohibits it from non-radiative decay and accounts for its fluorescent behaviour. PymII derivatives are n-type semiconductors, while Ph-PyrII and the hybrid show balanced ambipolar charge transport behaviour, all among the best isoindigo derivatives. Our study not only discloses the structure-property relationship of tetrazaisoindigos, but also provides novel electron-deficient monomers for conjugated polymers.

Abstract:meso-Cyano boron-pyridyl-isoindoline dyes with asymmetrical structures were synthesized through a facile two-step reaction. Broad envelopes of intense vibrational bands were observed for the main spectral bands in the absorption and emission spectra. Moderate fluorescence quantum yields were obtained in solution, with significant intensity also observed in film, powder and crystal forms. An analysis of the structure-property relationships was carried out based on X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations.

Abstract:IR780 as a commercially available dye with near-infrared emission has been extensively applied in fluorescent probes and bioimaging. In this work, to further intensify the optical behavior, a tetrahydropyridine ring was used to replace the cyclohexene ring at the center of IR780, forming a cyanine dye Cy-NH with near-infrared emission. Photophysical properties demonstrated that Cy-NH exhibits good optical performance. In particular, Cy-NH contains two functional reaction sites (e.g. Cl and NH sites on the tetrahydropyridine ring) and can be used to construct functional cyanine dyes. Investigation on imaging showed that these cyanines can be used as near-infrared fluorescent imaging agents in living cells and in vivo.

Abstract:Eight bicarbazole (BCz) compounds, 9,9'-diphenyl-3,3'-bicarbazole (PhBCz), 9,9'-di(2-pyridyl)-3,3'-bicarbazole (o-PyBCz), 9,9'di( 3-pyridyl)-3,3'-bicarbazole (m-PyBCz), 9,9'-di(4-pyridyl)-3,3'bicarbazole (p-PyBCz), 9,9'-di(5-pyrimidinyl)-3,3'-bicarbazole (PmBCz), 9,9'-di(2-pyrazinyl)-3,3'-bicarbazole (PzBCz), 9,9'-di(4isoquinolinyl)- 3,3'-bicarbazole (4-IqBCz), and 9,9'-di(5-isoquinolinyl)- 3,3'-bicarbazole (5-IqBCz), that can be divided into three categories: category one with ortho, meta, or para pyridyl substituted BCz (PhBCz as a reference), category two with pyrimidinyl or pyrazinyl substituted BCz, and category three with 4- or 5-isoquinolinyl substituted BCz, were synthesized and characterized in terms of photophysical, thermal, and electrochemical properties. Moreover, these compounds were utilized to codepositing with copper iodide to form luminescent copper iodide complex doped films in situ, whose emission colors range from green to yellow and might be employed as the emissive layer in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Abstract:The benzothiazine-indigo (BTI) has a skeleton similar to trichochromes C. The BTI has been studied as building blocks for conjugated polymers. It has been co-polymerized with electron rich benzodithiophene (BDT) and electron deficient diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) to give conjugated polymer P1 and P2. The optical and electrochemical properties of the new polymers were investigated. The semiconducting properties of the BTI based polymers have been studied in polymer solar cell devices. This study introduced a new indigoid building block for conjugated polymers.
