Abstract:Under mesophilic conditions (35℃), a bench scale experiment based on the high solid anaerobic digestion process for organic waste was conducted in a fed-batch single-phase reactor to study variations of ammonia concentration. In the steady state, the gas production rate reached 1.48 m3CH4/(m3·d) while the system achieved a daily feed with 150.0g/d. The organic loading rate was 4.94 kgVS/(m3·d) and methane conversion of volatilizable solid was 90%. When the concentration of ammonia rose up to 1700mg/L, the organic loading rate declined drastically to 0.77kgVS/(m3?d) and the gas production rate declined to 0.39m3CH4/(m3?d). During this period, ammonia concentration increased from 420mg/L to 3000 mg/L, and the growth rate of ammonia concentration in the steady state was somewhat higher with the average 37.15mg/(L·d). Acclimation enhanced the resistance ability of the methanogen to ammonia inhibition, thus, the gas production rate could maintain at 1.07 m3CH4/(m3·d) when ammonia concentration jumped over 3000mg/L again after 190 days of operation.
