An Empirical Study on TNCs Functional Location Choice and Urban Function Specialization

Abstract:MNCs' investment in China has gradually expanded from single function to the whole value chain;its functional location is corresponded with China's urban system and affecting and reshaping the spatial structure of it.This paper analyzes the gradual entering process of manufacturing MNCs' in China and shows the correspondence of its geographic distribution with China's urban system.Based on the database of all branches of the global top 500 enterprises and applying the conditional logit model,this paper finds out the determinants of different functions' location.The results indicate that urban class,distance to the central city and urban population are most significant factors that controlling the urban feature variables.There also exists functional agglomeration as well as co-agglomeration between different functions such as R&D and productions,productions and logistics,sales and productions,which promotes the functional specialization of Chinese cities and the conformation of city-region.
