Effects of Task Difficulty and Aging on Brain Activation——Take encoding of cued memory as an example

Abstract:The primary aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between the task difficulty and the brain activation,especially under the effects of aging.Fifteen(8 male,7 female)younger and thirteen(5 male,8 female)older adults participated in this study.Two kinds of cue-word recall tasks each at different difficulty level were administered to them.A block design was adopted to collect the fMRI data.The behavioral results indicated that the older people's memory ability was significantly lower than the younger people in the recall task.The brain imaging results showed that:Firsly,when the paired words' association decreases,more areas were actirated in the brain to compensate the performance.When the words' frequency reduced,the intensity of the brain activation was enhanced.Secondly,there was no linear relationship between task difficulty and the brain activation.Thirdly,only when the paired words' association decreases,the older people activated more frontal brain areas than the youngers to compensate their performance.
