Urban Hierarchical Structure of Shaanxi Province and Urban Regional Character of Xi'an——An Analysis Based on the FA Method

Abstract:By using the Factor Analysis (FA) method and based on relevant statistical data,a measurement was made on the comprehensive strength of Xi'an,the central city of Shaanxi Province with a“leaping type”urban hierarchical structure distribution map of Shaanxi Province obtained.When compared with the compre- hensive strength of 25 provincial capital cities and 4 cities under the direct jurisdiction of the state,the urban regional character of Xi'an of the“islet type”was demonstrated featuring forming a connecting link with the upper but not with the lower.It is held that the focal point for the urban construction of Shaanxi Province is to develop several big cities.The orientation of the urban development of Xi'an is to make it stronger instead of making it larger.While bringing into play the role of forming a connecting link between the east and the west, great attention should be directed to cultivating the function of Xi'an to form a connecting link between the up- per and the lower and cultivating the radiating force and centrifugal force of Xi'an for cities and rural regions within Shaanxi Province.
