Abstract:The evolution of Chinese space thoughts are based on political structure of great unity. From the development of great unity thoughts and the spatial orientation in Chinese political thoughts, this paper makes some probe on space thoughts of ancient China,and identifies the status of the political geography in regional space thoughts.

Abstract:During the Ming and Qing dynasties,China's grass-roots society gradually formed the social autonomy in which the local squires were leaders and the organizations of patriarchal clan were the foundation.In modern times,the Chinese government is rebuilding the system of grass-roots social autonomy through the implementation the autonomy of villagers and reform of social management system.Why do the government with the arbitrary power need the grass-roots social autonomy to a certain extent? This problem,in academic,there are two views:one is the theory of officials with constrained administrative capacity,the other one is the theory of political risk of Centralization.With combining traditional China and contemporary China to research,we find there is an enormous of limitation of theory of officials with constrained administrative capacity.And it contradicts with the reconstruction of grass-roots social autonomy in contemporary China.However,it has more general explanation ability in the theory of political risk of Centralization.In addition,the theory which comes from the generalization of theory of political risk of Centralization can explain the Chinese vertical decentralized governance structure and its evolution trend.

The Geographical Pivot of Chinese History——A Historial Analysis of China's Geopolitical Pattern and its Cause of Formation

Abstract:The term "geopolitics" is commonly understood as a particular mode of visualizing space,states,and the relationships between them.Geopolitical models always take the form of mapping by emphasizing the strategic importance of particular places.The principles of geopolitics,especially the heartland theory from Halford Mackinder,can be employed to analyze Chinese history,in which the territory suffered many times of splits and unification.Both the geographical pivot and heartland are in the Central Plains comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Huanghe River.The pivot has been defined by the ancient students of China such as Sima Qian.If we link Luoyang and Anyang in Henan Province and Huozhou in Shanxi Province with line segment to form a triangle on a map,the circumcircle of the small triangle gives the pivotal location of Chinese history.Further,if we link Beijing,Xi'an and Nanjing,the well-known ancient capitals in the history of China,to form a geographical Einthoven's Triangle on a map,the inscribed circle of the great triangle gives the bounds of the heartland.When the ancient Chinese statesmen were in conversation with the defeated enemy,some lovely airy cherub should have whispered to them from time to time this saying: "Who rules Pivot controls the heartland;Who rules the heartland commands the Great Central Plains;Who rules the Great Central Plains commands the whole country of China." Geographical factor is not the first most important determinant of national security,but it is very important,especially under specified spatio-temporal conditions.Therefore,it is significant to reveal the natural seats of power in a country in order to explain the past,understand the present,and predict the future.

Abstract:Geographical reality and diverse historical conditions left a significant impact on Chinese agricultural life since its beginning and throughout its later stages of growth. In light of it, intellectual structures were formed in ancient China over many centuries. Led by Confucianism and Daoism, various schools of ancient Chinese thoughts succeeded in forming intellectual foundations in social, humanistic and political dimensions. These thoughts came to express the achievements of Chinese humanistic development, which adheres to the customs, traditions, and virtuous family and community moral principles. Their effects are still evident today in modern Chinese humanistic thought.

Abstract:Chinese government has proposed a strategic development thought named as "Five Unified Plans".One of the most important unified plans is the unified planning regional development,which has important strategic and practical sense to coordinate regional development,improve the existing binary structure phenomena,and reduce the gap between different regions.Furthermore,the unified planning provides theoretical guidance to thoroughly construct a society of relatively comfortable life.The starting point and the standing point of unified planning development as a realistic choice under new historical situations are objective differences generally existed.Urbanization is increasingly becoming a new regional space unit of Urban Geography Space Research as a new phrase of Chinese urban development.The elementary sentence of urban geography is the research of objective differences that generally exist in the area of urban internal space development.However,the available theoretical achievement in the region level is not totally suitable for the research of objective differences in the area of urban internal space development.The author of this context holds an opinion that obvious "Yin Yang Structures" are present in urban internal space development.The Chinese traditional culture emphasizes the balance between Yin and Yang,which are the two basic aspects of everything of the world.Yin and Yang represent the feminine(or negative) and the masculine(or positive) sides of all the things respectively,and the conversion between the two in certain condition promotes the progress of the things.In fact,urban development also obeys the above rules,in which negative and positive features exist.The author attempts to define the space regions where development differences are present within urban areas with positive regions and negative regions herein,and discusses and parses the concept,intension,feature and mechanism of the positive and negative regions by analyzing relevant data of urbanized areas of four representative cities such as Wuhan,Wenzhou,Baoding and Chongqing and expressing the phenomenon of spatial differences.Furthermore,the above mentioned concept is compared to the other concepts expressing the regional internal spatial differences herein.With regard to the interrelationship of regional spaces disclosed,the concept of positive and negative regions is more visual and accurate to express the interrelationship of regional spaces than other concepts.In detail,the concept of positive and negative regions studies on the development of urban spaces under new circumstances with new authentication thoughts and new visual angles.The common understanding of coordination development of urban regions is advanced by the research,so that the active and positive strategies and measures are adopted to improve and optimize the development condition and environment of negative regions. Abstract:The author holds that quantitative approach is inevitable in political studies, but it should be based on concise and strictly defined concepts. On the other hand, development of political studies should not be restricted to quantitative studies. Instead, a paradigm of theoretical interpretation should be developed to support application of the research findings of political studies. Construction of political studies in China does not imply that there is a different political science in different countries and regions. It refers to the Chinese type of political studies. Two objectives are identified in construction of political studies in China, namely, filling in the gap where we have lagged behind in order to develop side by side with the international tendency, and having political studies localized in China.

Abstract:Ancient Chinese civilization was deeply rooted in a profound understanding of the environment. This understanding formed the primitive worship and unique culture of mountains and rivers, which found expression in both official and folk contexts. This essay delves into the significant influence of mountains and rivers on the site selection, positioning, and composition of ancient Chinese settlements. Through an in-depth analysis of cases, this study demonstrates that iconic mountain and river elements served as the foundation for determining the spatial locations of ancient Chinese settlements and the core references for designed landscapes. The settlement and surrounding mountains and rivers form a well-conceived integrated spatial composition, which threads the whole planning and construction process. As the determining factors for the spatial axes and forms of settlements, mountains and rivers also became the central objects of the feng shui theory. Therefore, the human geography of ancient China is not only a reflection of functions but also the result of the builders' diligent pursuit of spatial and cultural layouts. The study of the cultural genes allows for a deeper understanding of the cultural landscape of ancient China, leading to a commitment to protecting traditional settlements and their intact environmental systems.

Abstract:The political thoughts of contemporary China do not simply reflect but drive ahead China's political development by providing important intellectual resources.China's political thoughts arise and evolve in close connection with political,economic and social transformation of contemporary China.The restoration of political science,social reform,the rise of intellectual communities,as well as the changes in knowledge production and distribution system have bred and nurtured the political thoughts of contemporary China,whose development has experienced the following four phases: 1) ideology revaluation and regime reform,the initial feedback to China's reform and opening-up policy;2) reconstruction of state vs.society relations,echoing the early development of market economy;3) reinventing Government,a rational response to further development of market economy and economic globalization;4) nationalism and national revitalization,a political reaction to the globalization in the post-Cold War era.The political thoughts of contemporary China show different concerns and features in different historical periods.

Abstract:This essay examines historical transformations of the Chinese concept of tianxia ("all under heaven") in pre-modern periods. More specifically, it attends to the diverse ways tianxia has been built out of relationships between cosmology and political organization. The subtitles of this essay-archaic tianxia, relatedness as virtue, conceptions of the world in the Warring States, empire, Neo-Daoist and Buddhist inversions, and ethnographic others-form the features of the moments that make up, in the present, the many-faceted conceptual history of tianxia. The essay engages with these historical moments in order to reconsider popular conceptions of "Chinese civilization" and situate tianxia perspectives in their social contexts. Continuing the line of thinking initiated by Granet, the essay goes on to argue for understanding tianxia in an accumulative and unified sense as well-as an. other. to Indo-European mythico-religious systems of thought as well as an epistemology where political ontologies and the cosmos are conflated.
The Secularization and Cultural Understanding of Sacred Space: an Analysis of Historical Urban Form and Culture Characteristics in China

Abstract:Sacred space is a special type of cultural space and is an important aspect of historical urban form in both Eastern and Western cultures. These spaces often have a dual interpretation of space and social structure, which includes the evolution of town planning and the changes in social structure that convey a steadfast and non-reducible cultural significance. There are interesting differences between the East and West, and this paper aims to reveal these differences. The paper uses historical towns within the Five Sacred Mountains of China, represented by Dengfeng City, as a case study. This town is closely linked to the birth and development of Chinese civilization. The paper employs cultural memory theory, sacred space theory, and social space theory to study the transformation from the highest political space of ancient dynasties to the secular urban landscape of socialist system from two dimensions of townscape and social culture. Finally, the paper compares the characteristics of sacred space in the East and West, interprets the relationship between it and urban form and cultural value judgement, summarizes the general role of sacred space in shaping urban form and transmitting local cultural identity.
A Study on the Evolutionary Trend of the Regional Spatial Structure in China

Abstract:Since the early 1950s,China's regional spatial structure has changed dramatically.Although it is still characteristic of the point-axis pattern,the spatial structure of China's regional development has become more networked,and a quasi-networked spatial structure has emerged.With the economic growth and the construction of transportation infrastructure,the spatial restructuring of China's regional economy has been accelerated.Since the mid-1990s,differences of spatial structures in various regions and at various spatial levels have been expanding,as a result of their development.The differences can be summarized as follows: the coastal areas of East China have evolved to an advanced stage of development,with multi-centers and networked spatial structures;the spatial development of Central China is still characteristic of the point-axis pattern,with nuclear concentration and dispersion along the major axes;the spatial structure of the areas in West China is basically characteristic of polarization and nuclear concentration;and the spatial structure of Northeast China is characteristic of the mature point-axis pattern,with some local areas being characteristic of the quasi-networked structure.In addition,the spatial structures of such large metropolitan regions as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region,the Yangtze River Delta Region and the Pearl River Delta Region in East China have become highly polycentric and networked,but their polycentrification and networking are still at quite different levels.

Abstract:Ancient Chinese have expressed culture that communicated with gods and spirits through sound and language. This culture has contained mystical thinking that expressed orally, through spoken words, presenting a form of sound. This paper comprehensively examined and summarized the materials of mystical thinking in ancient Chinese from the texts of “Chen Wei”, analyzing the forms of mystical consciousness and the linguistic cultural features that favor cautious speech and silence over verbosity. The study explores the origins of mystical thinking in Chinese culture, tracing it back to the ancient people's blessings and declarations to spirits through shamans and historians, as well as court and folk poetry and proverbs. It then discussed how this was inherited by the texts of “Chen Wei” in Han dynasty, and how the mode of linguistic expression gradually shifted from sound to writing, examining the evolution of the mystical thinking content in ancient Chinese culture.

Abstract:We examine the long-term pattern of state formation and the mythical historical Chinese unity under one single political regime based on the compilation of a large geocoded annual data series of political regimes and incidences of warfare between 221 BC and 1911 AD. By classifying our data sets into two types of regimes - agrarian and nomadic - and three types of warfare - agrarian/nomadic, agrarian/agrarian and internal rebellions - and applying an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, we find that nomadic-agrarian warfare and internal rebellion strengthens unification but agrarian/agrarian warfare entrenches fragmentation. Our research highlights the combination of China's precocious ideology of a single unified ruler, environmental circumscription on the easternmost end of Eurasia and persistent agrarian-nomadic warfare as the driving force behind China's eventual unity. We further discuss the long-run implications of Chinese unity on economic performance in a global context.

Abstract:Information technology,which not only accelerates the pace of economic globalization but also changes human life,has great influence on the understanding of space.The space as a vehicle of human life reflects the changes which information technology makes.And great changes have taken place in the under-standing of space because the concepts of digital technology,information and innovation have been integrated into the studies of space.The authors point out that in china,information technology has import on space studies from the following three aspects:(1)the geographical space;(2)the regional organization in which the characteristics and evolvement of urban space structure are most concerned;(3)the changes of urban space which is caused by information technology.Therefore the new paradigms and concepts are emerging.Infor-mation technology provides a new way to explore space.This paper summarized the researches on space and time,space structure,the form of space influenced by information technology and the influence of informa-tion technology on space.The paper also examines the concept of traditional space.Geographers had been able to explain "space" comprehensively before 1970s.However,with the development of information tech-nology the meaning of space has been changed in many aspects like the concept,scale and dimension.We can see the viewpoint of space changes from the realism to the relationship,and spatial scales tend to be infinitely narrow,and space extends towards multi-dimension.Therefore,it is necessary to conduct researches on space in the new situation.The finding shows that space studies develop towards a multi-dimension and change from the theoretical research to the empirical research.The authors also suggest that it is necessary to con-struct a theoretical system of space.In the case of China,which is a developing country,the understanding of space should be related to economy,society and nature,especially geography.With the influence of industri-alization,urbanization,globalization,the geography space will be changed to be more complex,so the further researches should be done based on the new spatial theory to grasp the mechanism of the trend of urban de-velopment and then make effective government policies..

Abstract:Huaxiaism is the most unique crystallization of Chinese culture and thoughts.It is a composite product of the essential thoughts of Lao Tzu,Confucius and Shang Yang.It includes three different but organically interlinked research paradigms,i.e.the paradigm of Lao Tzu's Tao-based governance,which explains the stability,chaos,prosperity and decline of a country from perspectives of the Imitation of Nature and the Governance by Doing Nothing;the paradigm of Confucius's rule of man,which explains the same from perspectives of people-centeredness and elites;the paradigm of Shang Yang's rule of law,which explains state power,national interests as well as stability,chaos,prosperity and decline of a country from the perspective of the rule of law.The three paradigms form a rigorous system of thought which provides an important foundation for establishment of China's own ideology.

Abstract:The holistic view (or systematic thinking) of the Yijing (here Yijing refers to the original text in the ancient Chinese Daoist work The Book of Changes) is representative of the philosophical worldview in ancient China, which can reveal the interactive relationship between space, time and number. This study attempts to analyze and summarize human spatial, temporal and numeral processing from the aspects of the linguistic and cultural quantitative system for the three domains, contributing an original cognitive linguistic perspective on the holistic thinking typifying the worldview in ancient China and laying a foundation for further research. It argues that SPACE, TIME and NUMBER are not separated, but a holistic unity (or wholeness), they can be considered as one single domain. In ancient Chinese culture, the three domains cannot be separate, they should be integrated into the "growth of life experience", which is based on the MOTION metaphor and LIFE metaphor of the Yijing. The results of the corpus study of the Yijing text indicate that in this particular context of the Yijing, concepts in the domains of SPACE, TIME and NUMBER are schematized on the basis of further metaphorical extensions of concepts from the source of LIFE and MOTION.

Although modern political thoughts based on individual distribute politics as rights, which exist in modern society, it is necessary to learn from ancient political thoughts to construct well-being modern society. From the angle of view between ancient Greek politics and ncient Chinese politics, the Author compares the idea of responsibility in ancient western philosophy with that in ancient China and explains that responsibility has priority in ancient political ideas and that ancient political thoughts have effects on modern politics.
