Abstract:Confucians talk about benevolence in terms of "feelings" and "love". And the "feelings" can be mainly divided into three categories: universal emotions, affection and natural sympathies. That "the relations between the four beginnings and the seven emotions" hasn’t been developed into a theoretical theme in the history of Confucianism. After Confucius, the relations of the universality of natural sympathies and the difference of affection, have gradually become an important theoretical subject in Confucians’ideas of benevolence and love. Self-love and natural sympathies are two ends of love, which are mediated by affection. The Confucian school holds that deep affection is not only of difference, but of universality and transcendence, making it possible for self-love to change in other directions. With affection as the bridge, natural sympathies and self-love can remain in a state of tension and interpenetration, which makes Confucians’ideas of benevolence and love have the spiritual characters of both difference and interpenetration.
