Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new adaptive method for computing the numerical solutions of a class of quenching parabolic equations which exhibit a solution with one singularity. Our method systematically generates an irregular mesh with mesh-dependent temporal increments based on the solution behavior from which an implicit finite difference scheme associated with the irregular mesh is constructed. The convergence and stability of the finite difference scheme is analyzed for the solution before quenching. An equivalent linearized model is used to justify the stability of the method near quenching as well. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the viability of the proposed method.

Abstract:Understanding heat transfer between a quantum system and its environment is of undisputed importance if reliable quantum devices are to be constructed. Here, we investigate the heat transfer between system and bath in non-Markovian open systems in the process of adiabatic speedup. Using the quantum state diffusion equation method, the heat current, energy current, and power are calculated during free evolution and under external control of the system. While the heat current increases with increasing system-bath coupling strength and bath temperature, it can be restricted by the non-Markovian nature of the bath. Without pulse control, the heat current is nearly equal to the energy current. On the other hand, with pulse control, the energy current turns out to be nearly equal to the power. In this scenario, we show that non-Markovianity is a useful tool to drive the system through an approximate adiabatic dynamics, with pulse control acting in the conversion between heat current and power throughout the evolution.

Numerical Analysis on the Thermal Responses of Near-Critical Fluid to Transient Cooling Process

Abstract:The heat transfer of near-critical fluids has become a key topic as the transcritical/supercritical energy systems are more and more proposed in recent years. When fluids go across the critical point or the equilibrium curve in the phase boundaries in the critical region, dramatic changes happen in fluid properties. For example, the thermal diffusivity goes to zero and the compressibility diverges. Such effects introduce additional complexibility in thermal systems with supercritical fluids (heat exchanger, turbines, reactors, etc.). For the efficiency analysis in heat transfer and stability in small-scale, the current numerical study is proposed. In this study, non-equilibrium cooling process is discussed with the highly compressible near-critical fluid inside a two-dimensional chamber model. The typical size of the critical chamber is around 5 mm, in which the fluid is initially rested under 1g or 0g conditions. The system is described by a continuous Navier-Stokes equations and solved by coupling the equation of state that written in scaling form for the near-critical properties, which is defined by the distance parameter ε = (T-Tc)/Tc. The equations are solved by a Finite Volumn Method. It is found that the basic wave propation process happen in ~10-4 second time-scale, which is generated from the cooling boundary. Under such conditions, the collapse of the boundary layer happens when the near-wall fluid firstly become near-critical and it condensed toward the cooling wall. After that, the acoustic waves go forth and back through the chamber and the critical boundary line moves forward toward the adiabatic side. For 1g cases, it is found that the near-critical fluid would fall strong convection near the wall region and form interesting structures in the lower region of the cell. This study reports the first results on near-critical cooling process. Detailed parameter evolutions and indications for critical cooling process are discussed into detail in this study.

Abstract:The quenching phenomenon and its physical characters are critical issues in the study of combustion process. In this paper, a two-dimensional temporal fractional combustion model with Caputo derivative is considered. We design an ingenious adaptive finite difference discontinuous Galerkin method to solve this fractional combustion model. To catch quenching moment more accurately, an explicit bisection adaptive strategy is proposed for discretization of fractional derivative. Moreover, discontinuous Galerkin method is employed for spatial discretization to settle large gradient changes and non-smoothness property of solution in adjacent area of quenching moment. The physical properties of combustion process, such as positivity, monotonicity and stability, are theoretically or numerically investigated. Finally, we carry out systematic numerical experiments for such abstract combustor with different shapes and various parameter settings, which illustrate that the dynamics of such model depends on the intensity of initial inputs, the order of fractional derivative and the area of spatial domain.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the numerical approximation of quenching problems associated with nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations. Numerical simulation for this type of problem is challenging due to rapid changes in the solution near the quenching point. We introduce a concept called the dominance of equidistribution and a tool called moving mesh partial differential equations (MMPDEs). The obtained theoretical predictions indicate that applications of a moving mesh method are successful when MMPDEs have the dominance of equidistribution, and numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper studies the numerical solution of multi-dimensional nonlinear degenerate reaction–diffusion differential equations with a singular force term over a rectangular domain. The equations may generate strong quenching singularities. Our work focuses on a variable temporal step Peaceman–Rachford splitting method with an adaptive moving mesh in space. The temporal and spatial adaptation is implemented based on arc-length type of estimations of the time derivative of the solution since the time derivative of the solution approaches infinity when the quenching occurs. The multi-dimensional problem is split into a few one-dimensional problems and the splitting procedure can also be parallelized so that the computational time is significantly reduced. The physical monotonicity of the solution and stability of this variable step moving mesh scheme are analyzed for the time away from the quenching. As stability analysis may not be valid when it is very close to the quenching, thus an exact linear problem is introduced to justify the stability near the quenching time. Finally we provide some numerical examples to illustrate our results as well as to demonstrate the viability and efficiency of the method for the quenching problem or other problems with point singularities. We will also show the significant reduction in computational time required with parallel implementation of the algorithm on a computer with multi-CPU.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the global well-posedness and large-time behavior of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with hyperbolic heat conduction, where the heat flux is assumed to satisfy Cattaneo's law. When the initial perturbation is small and regular, we establish the global existence of the classical solution without any additional assumption on the relaxation time τ. Furthermore, assuming the initial perturbation belongs to a negative Sobolev space, we obtain the optimal time-decay rates of the high-order spatial derivatives of solutions by using a pure energy method instead of complicated spectral analysis. It is also observed that the heat flux, due to its damping structure, decays to the motionless state at a faster time-decay rate compared to density, velocity, and temperature.

Abstract:The paper addresses a two-temperature model for simulating compressible two-phase flow taking into account diffusion processes related to the heat conduction and viscosity of the phases. This model is reduced from the two-phase Baer-Nunziato model in the limit of complete velocity relaxation and consists of the phase mass and energy balance equations, the mixture momentum equation, and a transport equation for the volume <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://fraction.Terms" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> describing effects of mechanical relaxation, temperature relaxation, and thermal conduction on volume fraction evolution are derived and demonstrated to be significant for heat conduction problems. The thermal conduction leads to instantaneous thermal relaxation so that the temperature equilibrium is always maintained in the interface region with meeting the entropy relations. A numerical method is developed to solve the model governing equations that ensures the pressure-velocity-temperature (PVT) equilibrium condition in its high-order extension. We solve the hyperbolic part of the governing equations with the Godunov method with the HLLC approximate Riemann solver. The non-linear parabolic part is solved with an efficient Chebyshev explicit iterative method without dealing with large sparse matrices. To verify the model and numerical methods proposed,we demonstrate numerical results of several numerical tests such as the multiphase shock tube problem, the multiphase impact problem, and the planar ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem.

Abstract:In this paper, the heat transfer characteristics of the forced air quenching with non-isothermal and non-uniform oxidation are investigated. By introducing the variations of interfacial temperature and oxygen partial pressure, a three-layered non-isothermal high-temperature oxidation kinetic model is developed, in which a discrete-time modeling method is employed to solve the problem of integration of the transient terms, and a special interfacial grid treatment is used for considering the growth of each oxide layer and updating of the thermal properties. Moreover, a parameter identification method using the multi-objective genetic algorithm is proposed for the inverse solution of the oxidation parabolic parameters based on the measured scale thicknesses in oxidation experiment. A case study of the forced air quenching of a Q235 disk is presented to validate the availability of the developed formulas. Then the interfacial heat transfer characteristics are analyzed, while the numerical solutions with and without oxidation are both performed for in-depth comparison. Results indicate that the active quenching region is mainly centralized in the vicinity of stagnation region. The radial variation regularity of the temperature difference across the total oxide layer is mainly determined by the thermal conductivity and the scale thickness. The existence of the oxide scale actually produces a certain thermal resistance during the quenching process and the effects of the oxide scale increases with the radial coordinate due to the interfacial temperature distribution. The results obtained can provide theoretical derivation for precise control of the internal phase transformation during the forced air quenching process.

Abstract:This paper studies an inverse problem of identifying the discontinuous diffusion coefficient in a class of heat conduction equations from the final observation, which is of great significance both in theory and practice.Being different from ordinary continuous diffusion coefficient problems, documents concerned the discontinuous case are rather few.Since the control functional is non-convex, the uniqueness of the optimal solution can not be guaranteed.Assuming that T is relatively small, it is proved that the minizer is unique and stable.

Abstract:We consider the inverse heat conduction problem for the one-dimensional heat equation, where we are requested to determine a boundary value at one end of a spatial interval over a time interval and an initial value by means of Cauchy data at another end. By the existing theory we can prove the uniqueness in determining both a boundary value and an initial value, and our method does not require any initial value. We test our numerical method and show stable numerical reconstruction.
A finite volume method preserving the invariant region property for the quasimonotone reaction-diffusion systems

Abstract:We present a finite volume method preserving the invariant region property (IRP) for the reaction-diffusion systems with quasimonotone functions, including nondecreasing, decreasing, and mixed quasimonotone systems. The diffusion terms and time derivatives are discretized by a finite volume method satisfying the discrete maximum principle (DMP) and the backward Euler method, respectively. The discretization leads to an implicit and nonlinear scheme, and it is proved to preserve the invariant region property unconditionally. We construct an iterative algorithm and prove the invariant region property ar each iteration step. Numerical examples are shown to confirm the accuracy and invariant region property of our scheme.

Abstract:This article deals with a simultaneous abstract evolution equation. This includes a parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field system as an example which consists of a parabolic equation for the relative temperature coupled with a semilinear damped wave equation for the order parameter. Although a time discretization of an initial value problem for an abstract evolution equation has been studied, time discretizations of initial value problems for simultaneous abstract evolution equations seem to be not studied yet. In this paper we focus on a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying to parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems. Moreover, we can establish an error estimate for the difference between continuous and discrete solutions.

Abstract:In the present paper we propose a reduced temperature non-equilibrium model for simulating multicomponent flows with inter-phase heat transfer, diffusion processes (including the viscosity and the heat conduction) and external energy sources. We derive three equivalent formulations for the proposed model. All the three formulations assume velocity and pressure equilibrium across the material interface. These equivalent forms provide different physical perspectives and numerical conveniences. Temperature equilibration and continuity across the material interfaces are achieved with the instantaneous thermal relaxation. Temperature equilibrium is maintained during the heat conduction process. The proposed models are proved to respect the thermodynamical laws. For numerical solution, the model is split into a hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) system and parabolic PDE systems. The former is solved with the high-order Godunov finite volume method that ensures the pressure-velocity-temperature (PVT) equilibrium conduction. The parabolic PDEs are solved with both the implicit and the explicit locally iterative method (LIM) based on Chebyshev parameters. Numerical results are presented for several multicomponent flow problems with diffusion processes. Furthermore, we apply the proposed model to simulate the target ablation problem that is of significance to inertial confinement fusion. Comparisons with one-temperature models in literature demonstrate the ability to maintain the PVT property and superior convergence performance of the proposed model in solving multicomponent problems with diffusions.

Abstract:We study the existence and uniqueness of source-type solutions to the Cauchy problem for the heat equation with fast convection under certain tail control assumptions. We allow the solutions to change sign, but we will in fact show that they have the same sign as the initial data, which is a multiple of the Dirac delta. As an application, we obtain the large-time behaviour of nonnegative bounded solutions with integrable initial data to heat equations with fast convection, covering the case of several dimensions that remained open since the end of last century.
