Abstract:The success of the Internet is largely ascribable to the packet-switching scheme, which, however, also presents major challenges. Having identified three missing links in the current Internet architecture based on our long-term experiences of designing and operating large-scale backbones, we put forward a new, but incrementally deployable, network scheme-address switching. The address switching has both the advantages of packet switching and circuit switching; it supplies the missing links in the current Internet architecture and can reform the Internet traffic. Our analysis, protocol design and experiments indicate that the address switching can greatly improve the quality of service (QoS), security and routing scalability of today's Internet. So it can provide flexible, high-performance and "per-service" networking for the scientific research communities. Moreover, it can provide a fairer and more sustainable business model for the commodity Internet.

Abstract:The Internet,which is constructed based on the TCP/IP structure,has been facing many challenges towards its scalability,efficiency,safety and flexibility.Most proposals today fail to solve these problems all together because they have not fully explored and exploited the multiple attributes of IP addresses.This paper proposes an address driven network architecture, called ADN.The core idea of ADN is solve the key problems faced by Internet,such as space scalability,smooth mobility,security and privacy,service quality,network virtualization,by innovative management and usage of IP addresses,with an extensive exploit of the multiple attributes of IP address,including the length attribute,logic attribute,topology attribute,time attribute,space attribute,ownership attribute,etc.The key technologies of ADN include validated IP address,two-dimensional routing,dynamical IP address,etc.The two-dimensional routing uses the source address as well as the destination address of an IP packet.On the premise of pure IP routing,two-dimensional routing is capable of realizing many complex routing strategies which most existing routing extensions cannot achieve without sacrificing its efficiency and manageability. The validated IP address and dynamical IP address verify the facticity and validity of the source address and destination address,respectively.They prevent the malicious users from launching attacks without being traced using source address forgery,or accessing other end-hosts in the Internet without authorization granted.

Abstract:The address mechanism is the most essential and important part of the Internet architecture and its evolution determines the capacity of the Internet to accommodate the innovative applications.The traditional IP-based address strategy gets the current Internet into ossification which makes the architectural innovation become a consensus.Many novel address strategies make significant extensions or innovations for the traditional model but lack of common design principles and consistent expression model.It has become difficult to insight into future evolution progress of the address schemes for the diversity and heterogeneity.Moreover,we believe that a diversity address mechanism might coexist in the Internet architecture to meet the ecological evolution of network applications.To tackle the above problems,by researching the evolution of the Internet address mechanisms and abstracting a minimal architectural core,a general framework for accommodating the diversity and heterogeneity of various address strategies is proposed in this paper,including:1) formal and verifiable conceptual model forms a consistent theoretical framework within which the invariants and design constraints can be expressed;2) abstract multi-dimensional and extensible interface primitives and interactive patterns with the communication axioms to provide a proof framework for the Internet address schemes;3) derive working prototype implementations-Universal Engine of Address Schemes which allows us to construct the various address mechanisms with flexibility and support the evaluation,evolution and coexistence of the Internet address strategies,in order to meet the ecological evolution of network applications.

Abstract:The Internet is becoming the global digital infrastructure; however, its current architecture faces many challenges in terms of scalability, security and other aspects. For example, the BGP routing table keeps growing rapidly as the Internet scales up; Source IP address spoofing and prefix hijacking undermine the security of fundamental Internet applications. Motivated by seeking evolvable architecture solutions, we propose an enhanced inter-domain routing architecture to address these problems. In our architecture, we first introduce two routing hierarchies: local routing on specific network layer protocols/addresses and global routing on a coarser granularity in order to improve the routing scalability. The end-to-end routes are composed of local IP-level forwarding and global transit tunnels on higher routing hierarchy. Secondly we propose "pair-wise" routing on the coarser granularity which may facilitate source authentication and inter-domain accountability. On the data plane, an inter-domain path is composed of concatenated local transit tunnels within administration boundaries which should comply with corresponding local transit policies. In addition to enhanced scalability, security and accountability, our new routing architecture may facilitate Internet-wide deployment of new network layer protocols and leverage IP evolution in the long run.

The IPv6 routing system will face severe scalability issue if the IPv6 addresses are recklessly used without careful aggregation strategy. This draft describes an addressing scheme and the corresponding allocation scheme which can facilitate the aggregation of IPv6 addresses and keep the IPv6 inter-domain routing system from being overloaded.
Towards a New Internet Routing Architecture: Arguments for Separating Edges from Transit Core.

Abstract:In recent years, the size and dynamics of the global routing table have increased rapidly along with an increase in the number of edge networks. The relation between edge network quantity and routing table size/dynamics reveals a major limitation in the current architecture; there is a conflict between provider-based address aggregation and edge networks’ need for multihoming. Two basic directions towards resolving this conflict have surfaced in the networking community. The first direction, which we dub separation, calls for separating edge networks from the transit core, and engineering a control and management layer in between. The other direction, which we dub elimination, calls for edge networks to adopt multiple provider-assigned addresses to enable provider-based address aggregation. In this paper, we argue that separation is a more promising approach to scaling the global routing system than elimination, and can potentially be leveraged to bring other architectural improvements to today’s Internet that an elimination approach cannot.

Abstract:The Internet routing table size has been growing rapidly. In future Internet, if given a much larger public address space (e.g., IPv6), the potential expansion can be very significant, and the cost of a large routing table will affect many ISPs. Before devising methods to ensure routing scalability, it is necessary to understand what factors lead to the expansion of routing tables and to what extent they impact. In addition to the well known factors such as multi-homing, traffic engineering and non-contiguous address allocations, the tendency towards convenient address management also increases the routing table size. In this paper, we take a measurement-based approach to examine quantitatively how various factors, especially the current address aggregation status of different types of ISPs, contribute to the growth of global routing table. We show how these patterns affect the routing scalability, and discuss the implications as we plan address management and routing for the future Internet.

Abstract:Due to multi-homing,traffic engineering(TE),etc,more and more unaggregatable address fragments are poured into the core network,which leads to the severe routing scalability problem of the Internet.The core-network routers are affected in two aspects: memory overhead by the ever-increasing routing table size and computation overhead by the ever-increasing routing updates.In order to solve the routing scalability of the Internet,many solutions have been proposed,including host-based identifier/locator separation,edge/core network separation,route aggregation,compact routing,geographic routing,etc.In this paper,we give a comprehensive survey on all the existing solutions.We study the causes of the internet routing scalability,classify the solutions and make a comparison among them.
A Neutral Layered Mapping System with Two-Stage Cache for a Scalable Internet

Abstract:The separation between edge and core addresses has been proposed to address the scalability problem of the Internet routing system. One main challenge is to design an efficient mapping mechanism for the two address spaces. The layer structure is attractive because of its scalability and simple index mechanism, while existing layered mapping system lacks a clear structure study and faces serious deployment and mapping quality issues. This paper proposes a neutral layered mapping system called NLMS run orthogonal to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that can be widely acceptable by various networks and be constructed stepwise. A constraint analysis on the layer structure points out that a three-layer NLMS suffices to manage mapping information for IPv6 edge addresses. To guarantee the routing quality under NLMS a two-stage cache mechanism called TSC is further proposed. Experiments show that TSC can effectively reduce mapping delays and enhance other mapping qualities. Compared with existing mapping designs, NLMS succeeds in achieving all the primary goals of mapping design.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of Internet, the structures and resolutions of Internet namespaces are facing with new challenges. IP address is overloaded in semantics because it is used to represent both the location and the identity of a device. The namespace resolution system DNS can't satisfy many new application demands with its unique service model, slow update speed, and weak capability in resource description. Many network middleboxes, such as NAT, various agents and firewalls, also destroy the Internet architecture and the Internet namespaces. Based on these, researchers bring forth many solutions to improve the structures and resolutions of Internet namespaces. This paper analyzes the problems in the structures and resolutions of current Internet namespaces, and then makes categories, surveys, and comparisons on the improvement solutions to them. Finally, future research trends on this area are discussed.

An Integrated, Distributed Traffic Control Strategy for the Future Internet

Abstract:Due to the lack of a general theoretical foundation, today's distributed traffic control mechanisms developed at the networking layer, transport layer, and overlay are largely disintegrated. As a result, traffic control protocols developed at different layers may achieve conflicting design objectives and interact with one another in an unpredictable fashion. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to tackle this issue. First, we propose a theoretical foundation for distributed traffic control. On the basis of this foundation, we then propose an integrated, multilayer, multi-domain traffic control structure. This structure makes it possible to develop traffic control protocols at different layers, possessing the following nice features: (1) they achieve non-conflicting design objectives; (2) they enable rich service quality features, including Quality-of-Service (QoS), Traffic Engineering (TE), and Fast Failure Recovery (FFR); (3) they lead to highly scalable, globally stable and optimal control; (4) they can deal with network diversities and tussles among administrative domains; (5) they allow effective control of dynamically generated overlay networks. The proposed strategy only makes two assumptions about the Internet architecture, i.e., the ability to support multiple domains and multi-path forwarding. As a result, the proposed strategy can be applied to the existing or any future Internet architectures for which these two assumptions hold.

Abstract:Internet is becoming an indispensible infrastructure of essential media, which makes a great burden for ISP's security and traffic management. Especially the situation will be much more serious in NGI (the Next-Generation Internet) because of its innumerable users, mobile device, information appliances (IA) and networked sensors etc with 128-bit IPv6 address. For the reason of lacking scalability, ISP's current security and traffic management scheme will be unavailable in NGI environment unless novel architecture and protocol proposed. In this paper, we studied the problem ISP faced and introduced an IPv6-based multiple addresses configuration scheme to ease ISP's traffic management in NGI environment. In the scheme, each type of service has its own source IPv6 address so that ISP can easily deploy security and traffic management policy with scalability. At the same time, QoS is improved and bandwidth is saved. In addition, some key technologies of the scheme are proposed in detail for future research activities focus on.

Abstract:In response to the critical challenges of the current Internet architecture and its protocols, a set of so-called clean slate designs has been proposed. Common among them is an addressing scheme that separates location and identity with self-certifying, flat and non-aggregatable address components. Each component is long, reaching a few kilobits, and would consume an amount of fast memory in data plane devices (e.g., routers) that is far beyond existing capacities. To address this challenge, we present \emph{\FR}, a high-speed and length-agnostic forwarding engine for future border routers, performing most of the lookups within three fast memory accesses. To compress forwarding states, \FR constructs scalable and reliable Bloom filters in Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM). To guarantee correctness, \FR detects false positives at high speed and develops a blacklisting approach to handling them. In addition, we optimize our design by introducing a hashing scheme that reduces the number of hash computations from $k$ to $log(k)$ per lookup based on hash coding theory. We handle routing updates while keeping filters highly utilized in address removals. We perform extensive analysis and simulations using real traffic and routing traces to demonstrate the benefits of our design. Our evaluation shows that \FR is more energy-efficient and less expensive (in terms of total cost) compared to optimized IPv6 TCAM-based solutions by up to 67\% and 43\% respectively. In addition, the total cost of our design is approximately the same for various address lengths.

Abstract:Given the emerging problems of today’s Internet, many new Internet architectures have been proposed by the net- working community. In general, the new approaches can be categorized into two types: evolutionary approaches and clean-slate approaches. The representative evolutionary solution is IPv6, while representative clean-slate approaches are NDN (Named Data Networking), MobilityFirst, NEBULA, XIA (Expressive Internet Architecture), and SDN (Software-Defined Networking). A comprehensive survey of these approaches is presented. Additionally, a novel network architecture that we recently proposed: ADN (Address-Driven Networking) is described, which intends to address the challenges faced by today’s Internet via the flexible and innovative utilization of IP addresses.

Abstract:Internet routing scalability issue is one of challenges of future Internet architecture. The global routing table is inflating with the growing number of networks connected to the Internet and the more-specific prefixes from multi-homing and traffic engineering operation requirements. Many engineering solutions have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a scalable routing architecture in a long-term intention for future Internet. Different from previous work, this architecture maintains AS landmark information for improving route forwarding table (FIB) aggregatability. Our evaluations on real BGP routing tables show that it can lead to an aggregated FIB of size less than 6%~22% of the original FIB size. It can be incrementally deployed in the Internet.

Abstract:Higher dimensional classification has attracted more attentions with increasing demands for more flexible services in the Internet. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a two dimensional router (TwoD router), that makes forwarding decisions based on both destination and source addresses. This TwoD router is also a key element in our current effort towards two dimensional IP routing. With one more dimension, the forwarding table will grow explosively given a straightforward implementation. As a result, it is impossible to fit the forwarding table to the current TCAM, which is the de facto standard despite its limited capacity. To solve the explosion problem, we propose a forwarding table structure with a novel separation of TCAM and SRAM. As such, we move the redundancies in expensive TCAM to cheaper SRAM, while the lookup speed is comparable with conventional routers. We also design the incremental update algorithms that minimize the number of accesses to memory. We evaluate our design with a real implementation on a commercial router, Bit-Engine 12004, with real data sets. Our design does not need new devices, which is favorable for adoption. The results also show that the performance of our TwoD router is promising.
