Abstract:The Competition Model sees sentence processing as form-function mapping as a result of the interaction of syntactic and semantic cues.Animacy,a cue representing lexical semantic information,is at the present the only semantic cue that is empirically studied in the literature. To better represent lexical semantics in sentence processing,we propose a new cue, argument specification satisfaction. As form-function mapping can be viewed as the mapping of nouns on the formal level to arguments on the functional level, argument specification satisfaction is the extent to which a noun satisfies the semantic specifications on an argument.Nouns higher in argument specification satisfaction for an argument have a better chance to be mapped on that argument. The hypothesis of this cue is justified in the two experiments conducted in this study.
