Abstract:Lacustrine shale oil represents a significant frontier in energy supply growth. However, research and exploration in this field are still nascent, and the considerable heterogeneity poses significant challenges to evaluating its resource potential. Presently, employing the hydrocarbon generation potential method to quantify organic matter characteristics during thermal evolution offers a viable approach for petroleum resource assessment. Yet, existing hydrocarbon generation potential models primarily rely on routine pyrolysis. Due to the limitations of routine pyrolysis, these models fail to meet the resource evaluation demands of shale oil reservoirs because they do not account for oil mobility within the shale, which has a significant impact on actual production. In contrast, multistep pyrolysis can accurately characterize oil mobility in shale and introduces new perspectives into shale oil research. Herein, the shale of Qianfoya Formation in the Langzhong area of the Sichuan Basin is selected as the research object. Leveraging multistep pyrolysis, we have developed a novel model to characterize hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, retention, and mobility features of shale across various thermal maturities. Our findings indicate that shale reservoirs with medium to high thermal maturity exhibit significant oil retention and excellent oil mobility, making them the most favorable targets for exploration. Additionally, overmature reservoirs, benefiting from high oil mobility, are identified as secondary favorable targets. However, reservoirs with low maturity (early stages of hydrocarbon generation peak) cannot be prioritized as primary exploration targets given current technological constraints. Compared to existing hydrocarbon generation potential models, our proposed method offers two key advantages. Firstly, it enables more precise evaluation of the original hydrocarbon generation potential. Secondly, our model accounts for the influence of thermal maturity on oil sorption by organic matter and characterizes oil mobility across various thermal maturities, making it better suited for research and exploration of shale oil reservoirs. This study represents the first endeavor to utilize multistep pyrolysis data in constructing a model to describe the hydrocarbon generation process in shale. The insights gained from this research offer a novel approach for evaluating shale oil resources in other petroliferous basins worldwide.
