Abstract:To be better applied in light emitting diodes (LEDs), phosphors are always required a good thermal stability. As an important factor which influences the thermal stability of the phosphors, thermal degradation is decided by the oxidation of the activated ions or the host. In this paper, the process of oxidation of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ were studied, as well as the influence of the production of Eu3+ on the stability of the phosphors. The results suggest that the oxidation process is directly related to the content of activated ions and the treated temperature. At the same time, the production of Eu3+ will promote Eu2+ further oxidation and reduce the thermal stability of the phosphors. On the other hand, an amorphous layer on the surface was found during the holding process, which has an inhibiting effect on the oxidation of the Eu2+.

Abstract:Nitride red phosphors of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ are synthesized in mild conditions and exhibit excellent luminescence properties; yet, the occurrence of thermal degradation results in a decrease of their luminous intensity and quantum efficiency at the high working temperature of wLED. This work shows that Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphors, prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction, undergo severe thermal degradation at high temperatures, not only in air atmosphere, but even in highly pure N2 gas. In order to shed light on the degradation mechanism, the materials obtained after heat-treatment at various temperatures up to 600 °C were thoroughly characterized at the investigated temperatures with the aid of several experimental techniques, such as in-situ HRTEM, along with XPS, luminescence spectroscopy, SEM/EDS, XRD with Rietvelt refinement. The analyses of the results proposed a novel mechanism for the thermal degradation of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphors. More specifically, there was no evidence of alterations in the crystalline regime or in the Eu-oxidation state after the heat-treatment. Nevertheless, the results revealed that after heat-treatment in N2, the bonds between Si atom and O impurity inside the crystal lattice become unstable, resulting in their detachment and in formation of local nano-defects. SrSiO3 precipitates on the surface of the phosphor particles, which leads to the destruction of the original lattice structure and to the formation of deep defect energy levels, which causes a decrease in the luminous intensity of the phosphor. Therefore, present study provides a new insight into the thermal degradation mechanism and favors solving the shortcomings of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphor in the process of industrialization.

Degradation and rejuvenation studies of AC electroluminescent ZnS:Cu,Cl phosphors

Abstract:We report detailed degradation and rejuvenation studies of AC electroluminescence (EL) of the phosphor ZnS:Cu,Cl, aiming to better understand the physical mechanisms that control EL emission. We find that the AC EL emission spectra vary considerably with the AC driving frequency but all spectra can be fit to a sum of four Gaussians. During degradation, although there is a large overall decrease in amplitude, the shape of the emission spectra measured at a given AC frequency does not change. Annealing the samples after they are significantly degraded can rejuvenate the phosphors with a maximum rejuvenation occurring (for fixed annealing times) near 180 °C. Further, these test cells can be degraded and rejuvenated multiple times. However studies at slightly higher annealing temperatures (240 °C) show significant thermal degradation and, perhaps more importantly, a change in the spectral shape; this likely indicates that two distinct mechanisms are then operative. In extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments we find that the CuS nanoprecipitates in the ZnS host (∼ 75% of the Cu is in the CuS precipitates) do not change significantly after the 240 °C anneal; these experiments also provide a more detailed comparison of the local structure about Cu in pure CuS, and in ZnS:Cu,Cl. In addition, the EXAFS experiments also place an upper limit on the fraction of possible interstitial Cu sites, proposed as a blue emission center, at less than 10%. The combined experiments place strong constraints on the mechanisms for degradation and rejuvenation and suggest that EL degradation is most likely caused by either Cu or Cl diffusion under high E-fields, while thermal diffusion at slightly elevated temperatures without E-fields present, re-randomizes the (isolated) dopant distributions. Higher T anneals appear to damage the sharp tips on the precipitates.
Investigation of the Thermal Quenching of Two Emission Centers in Sr9MnLi(PO4)7:Eu2+ Using Time-Resolved Technique

Abstract:The thermal stability of the phosphors in phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (LEDs) plays an important role in the practical application of lighting. Herein, the Mn2+-based red-emitting phosphors of pure and Eu2+-doped Sr9MnLi(PO4)7 (SMPO) samples were prepared using the high temperature solid-state reaction method. The crystal field environment around the Mn2+ ions was analyzed by combining the results of photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy and Tanabe-Sugano diagrams. By comparing the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, two additional bands centered at about 129.8 eV and 130.7 eV were found in the Eu2+-doped sample, which corresponded to the chemical states of P 2p3/2 and P 2p1/2. Two different sets of emission spectra were observed for Sr9MnLi(PO4)7:5%Eu2+ (SMPO:Eu2+) on employing the time-resolved technique. The emission peaks centered at 615 nm and 661 nm were attributed to Mn2+ and Eu2+ ions, respectively. The thermal quenching behaviors of Eu2+ and Mn2+ were investigated in the temperature range of 300-620 K and the thermal quenching mechanisms are given in this work. Systematic research on the luminescent properties of Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions in the SMPO:Eu2+ phosphor contributes to the understanding of the thermal stability and aids in the development of Mn2+-based red-emitting phosphors.

Abstract:Fluoride materials provide some distinct advantages owing to their very low phonon frequencies, which makes them as good hosts for downconversion/upconversion phosphors. Oxides with wide band gap and good chemical stability are also easily prepared, which makes them the prior host matrix for phosphors used in LED, long-lasting phosphor, and plasma display panels (PDPs), in which vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation from noble gas discharge is used as the excitation source. In contrast, because of the strong nephelauxetic effect and large crystal-field splitting caused by the coordination of nitrogen atoms, (oxy)nitrides exhibit broad excitation bands covering the emission of the InGaN near-UV and blue LED chips. Moreover, (oxy)nitrides materials feature high thermal and chemical stability due to the stiff frameworks of (Si, Al)-(N, O) tetrahedral in the host lattice. These features lead (oxy)nitrides to be excellent hosts for phosphors, especially those used in LED. In this section, we briefly summarize the crystal structures of somefluorides, (oxy)nitrides, and oxides and present their optical properties as well as give examples for their applications.

Abstract:Polymer degradation under electrical stress was studied using the device structure indium tin oxide/poly(p-phenylene vinylene)/Ca/Ag. The devices that were used in this study do not show any significant decrease in electroluminescent intensity for up to several thousand hours of operation. However for devices that were electrically stressed and then exposed to normal ambient, there was a significant decrease in the photoluminescence. Those that were not electrically stressed but exposed to normal ambient or were electrically stressed but not exposed to normal ambient, there was no significant degradation in the photoluminescence. These results showed that both conditions of electrical stress and photo-oxidation are necessary for a significant decrease of the photoluminescence intensity. Degradation is accompanied by an increase in the x-ray crystallization peak. We interpret that the photoluminescence intensity degradation is due to the change in polymer crystallinity caused by electrical stress followed by photo-oxidation.
Studies on Energy Transfer of Eu2+ Ions in the Sr4al14o25-Based Phosphor

Abstract:Three kinds of Long afterglow Sr4Al14O25: Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphor samples with various Eu2+ contents were synthesized. When the concentration of doped Eu2+ in the host was less than 0.012 mol, the emission spectra of Sr4Al14O25: Eu2+, Dy3+ has two peaks at 407 nm and 494 nm respectively, which is ascribed to two types of Eu2+ sites existing in Sr4Al14O25 matrices crystal. But the 407 nm emission peak disappeared slowly with the concentration of doped Eu2+ increasing. Based on the Sr4Al14O25 crystal structure, excitation and emission spectra, the energy transfer model has been established, and a reasonable explanation was given for the experimental phenomena. In addition, the decay curves indicate that these Sr4Al14O25: Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphors have obviously along afterglow. Especially in phosphor, the afterglow can last over 20 h in the light perception of the human eye.

Abstract:A comprehensive study of the photo‐degradation and thermal effects of exfoliated Violet Phosphorus (VP) is investigated. It is shown that the wavelength and exposure duration of light strongly influences the degradation rate of VP. Photoluminescence spectroscopy is performed as a function of time, power, and temperature to understand the effect of degradation on exciton emissions. Temperature‐dependent Raman is used to investigate the phonon properties of VP. Violet phosphorus (VP) is garnering attention for its appealing physical properties and potential applications in optoelectronics. A comprehensive investigation of the photodegradation and thermal effects of exfoliated VP on SiO2/Si substrates is presented. The degradation rate of VP is strongly influenced by the wavelength and exposure duration of light. Light illumination of VP above the bandgap leads to faster degradation, attributed to interactions with reactive oxygen species. Power‐dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements at low temperature (T = 4 K) show neutral exciton (X0) and trion (T) intensities linearly increase with excitation power, while the energy difference between peak energies decreases. The T/X0 spectral weight ratio increases from 0.28 at 300 K to 0.69 at 4 K, suggesting enhanced T formation due to reduced phonon scattering. Temperature‐dependent Raman is used to investigate the phonon properties of VP. Tracking peak positions of 9 Raman modes with temperature, the linear first‐order temperature coefficient is obtained and found to be linear for all modes. The results provide a deeper understanding of VP's degradation behavior and implications for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:New lanthanide luminescence materials were prepared. The main component lanthanide chelates generally need a relatively high content of rare earth. Inorganic luminescence materials only need low rare earth concentration using doped method. Similarly, lanthanide chelates can be added to complex matrix by doped method. In this way, low rare earth concentration emission was successful in the lanthanide chelates system as well. The influence of europium ion concentration on luminescence intensities was discussed. When the europium ion weight in the complex is only about 0.6%, the sample exhibits good luminescence properties. The fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectra, micro-Raman and electron spin resonance spectra of the samples were measured. And a possible luminescence mechanism was suggested by the inorganic doped mechanism and the luminescence of lanthanide complexes together.

Abstract:In this paper, Y2O2S:Eu phosphors doped with Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Ti4+ were studied by photoluminescent spectra, afterglow spectra, XRD, decay curve, relative brightness and thermoluminescent spectra. The results show that those dopants do not change crystal structure of the host, but influence afterglow properties and relative brightness. Decay curve comprised of a fast and a slow part was found well exponential. It is considered that presence of shallow trap levels induced by interstitial oxygen atoms is responsible for the fast decay process while the deeper traps control the slow decay behavior.

Abstract:Inorganic phosphors with the broad excitation bands and efficient visible emission are important to fabricate lighting emitting diodes. Herein, we fabricated the Lu2MgAl4SiO12:Ce3+ and Ca substituted Lu2MgAl4SiO12:Ce3+ phosphors by a sol-gel approach. Their characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The thermal stabilities of Lu1.95Ce0.05MgAl4SiO12 and Lu1.95Ce0.05Mg0.25Ca0.75Al4SiO12 were evaluated in the temperature rage of 30–230 °C. In addition, the mechanisms of concentration quenching and thermal stability were discussed. Upon the excitation at 435 nm, Lu2−xCexMgAl4SiO12 and Lu1.95Ce0.05Mg1−yCayAl4SiO12 phosphors show emission bands with changing peak wavelength by reason of the changing crystal field splitting with the changing Ce3+ and Ca2+ concentrations. Meanwhile, the substitution of Ca2+ to Mg2+ leads to the enhancements of thermal stability of luminescence.

Abstract:Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor is a very attractive material for use as a red phosphor in many fields. SrAl2O4:Eu2+ belongs to long lasting phosphor (LLP) and it is a useful bluish-green luminescence material, which can also be a promising candidate as a simple and easy-to-use radiation detection element for visual display of two dimensional radiation distributions. In the present study, both these two kinds of phosphors were synthesized using high temperature solid state reactions. In our work, the influence of gamma-ray irradiation on the properties of these two kinds of phosphors was studied by comparing photoluminescence, brightness and the decay curve of unirradiated and gamma-ray-irradiated samples. Conclusions from the present work can be briefly summarized as follows. In irradiated samples, the brightness is decreased without sensible change in the wavelength distribution of the luminescence spectrum and in the decay kinetic upon gamma exposure. Moreover, the emission due to Eu3+→Eu2+ conversion in Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphors was not observed in our sample after irradiation to high exposure. Also the brightness of SrAl2O4:Eu2+ phosphor turned out to decrease after the exposition to ionizing radiation while the luminescence wavelength distribution remained unchanged. The reason for the effect of gamma-ray irradiation on the properties of phosphors is also discussed in the paper.
The study of preparation and luminescence of polymethyl methacrylate/rare earth composite luminescent materials

Abstract:The alkaline-earth–rare-earth–aluminate systems phosphors are the new types of phosphors, which process very bright, safer, and excellent photoluminescence. Because of hydrolysis, however, the capacity of luminescent materials will fall down and the use value of luminescent materials will also be lost. Water-resistant polymers, which can form a kind of water-resistant clad on the surface of luminescent material powder, will solve this problem and the significance of its application is important. In this study, the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/rare earth composite luminescent materials were prepared through grafting emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto the surface of luminescent materials. To study the structure and properties of the PMMA/rare earth composite luminescent materials, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and photoluminescent properties were measured. From the curves of FTIR and TGA, we can find that the organic parts are attached with the inorganic parts in the PMMA/rare earth composite luminescent materials. The results of luminescent decay curves show that the resistance to water of the PMMA/rare earth composite luminescent materials is much better than that of the unmodified luminescent materials because the organic parts had been grafted on the luminescent materials.

Abstract:Tm3+ and Yb3+ codoped LuPO4 phosphors were synthesized by the reverse-strike co-precipitation method. The obtained LuPO4:Tm3+, Yb3+ phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction ( XRD), diffuse reflectance spectra, photoluminescence ( PL) spectra, and decay lifetime to understand the observed near-infrared downconversion ( DC) phenomena. The XRD results show that all the prepared phosphors can be readily indexed to the pure tetragonal phase of LuPO4 and exhibit good crystallinity. The experimental results showed that the strong visible emission around 649 nm from Tm3+((1)G(4) -> F-3(4)) and near-infrared (NIR) emission around 1003 nm from Yb3+(F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2)) of LuPO4:Tm3+, Yb3+ phosphors were observed under 468 nm excitation, respectively. The Yb3+ concentration dependence of luminescent properties and lifetimes of both the visible and NIR emissions have also been investigated. The quenching concentration of Yb3+ ions approaches 30 mol%. The DC mechanism is also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Luminescence induced by mechanical stress has been observed in the SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy phosphors. The Dy3+ doping concentration and the loading pressure show strong influence on the intensity but the Eu2+ doped samples show little effect of mechanoluminescence (ML). The origin of the ML may be ascribed to the holes released due to the stress on the phosphors and then recombine with metastable Eu+1.
Quantification of Emission Efficiency in Persistent Luminescent Materials

Abstract:A protocol is presented for accurately quantifying the quantum yield of persistent phosphors, enabling precise performance comparisons. Applied to different phosphors, it reveals a trade‐off between efficiency and brightness, aiding in the selection of appropriate charging conditions. It facilitates the design of persistent materials beyond trial‐and‐error approaches by contributing to the development of standardized characterization tools for the analysis of afterglow mechanisms. Accurate quantification of efficiency enables rigorous comparison between different photoluminescent materials, providing an optimization path critical to the development of next‐generation light sources. Persistent luminescent materials exhibit delayed and long‐lasting luminescence due to the temporary storage of optical energy in engineered structural defects. Standard characterization methods do not provide a universal comparison of phosphor performance, hindering the evaluation of the efficiency of the various processes involved in afterglow. Here, a protocol is established to determine the quantum yield of persistent phosphors by considering the ratio of photons emitted in the afterglow and during charging to those absorbed. The method is first applied to transparent single crystals of the most common persistent phosphors, such as SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ and Y3Al2Ga3O12:Ce3+,Cr3+. The versatility of the methodology is demonstrated by quantifying the quantum yield of a ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ thin film, a material widely used in in vivo imaging. The high efficiency of strontium aluminate is confirmed, and a strong dependence of the obtained values on the illumination conditions is revealed, highlighting a trade‐off between efficiency and brightness. The results contribute to the development of standardized protocols for analyzing afterglow mechanisms and assessing overall efficiency, facilitating rigorous comparison and optimization of persistent materials beyond trial‐and‐error approaches.

Abstract:Degradation mechanism of 265-nm deep ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) has been investigated by means of electroluminescence, current-voltage measurement, capacitance-voltage measurement, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDAX). It is revealed that a major degradation mode of UV-LEDs may be the leakage current induced optical degradation. The current pathway is demonstrated by TEM with EDAX, indicating that the contact metals can partially interact with p-type materials, which accelerate the degradation of LEDs. The presented results can help to understand the degradation mechanisms and improve the reliability of deep UV-LEDs.
Luminescence decay evaluation of long-afterglow phosphors

Abstract:In the current study, the phosphorescence decays of the long-afterglow materials of SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy, Sr4Al14O25:Eu, Dy, Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu, Dy, and ZnS:Cu, Co have been measured over long time (15h to 16h). The evaluation methods of luminescence decay are analyzed and summarized. The existing formulas are in accordance with the experimental decay data in the initial fast decay stage. However, the deviation is much larger and the accuracy is much lower in the slow decay stage. Therefore, the existing formulas cannot be used to accurately describe the luminescence decay of the samples with much longer afterglow time (>80min). Moreover, certain formulas do not match the actual decay situation of long-afterglow luminescence. We suggest our solutions for this problem.

Abstract:Fluorene derivatives have been widely developed in OLEDs because of its efficient fluorescence quantum efficiency, but for which unique rigid biphenyl planar structure and large conjugated system, we hypothesize that they have a great potential for room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) applications, and confirmed this conjecture by subjecting polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and phosphors to thermal annealing. The cross-linked structure formed during thermal annealing judiciously modulates the phosphorescence emission characteristics of the fluorenol with the synergistic interaction between PVA and fluorenol. Specifically, the lifetime exhibited a substantial increase from 1352.2 ms to 2874.1 ms, accompanied by a quantum yield augmentation from 4.8 % to 11.3 %, which substantiate that cross-linked induced by thermal annealing effectively amplifies the phosphorescent intensity and stability of the phosphors, facilitating ultralong phosphorescent emission at ambient conditions. Furthermore, an effective probe based on this film is developed for its highly sensitive, quantitative and immediate detection of volatile organic compounds. This investigation not only proffers a novel paradigm for the development of advanced RTP materials but also imparts insightful considerations for optimizing the performance of polymers in conjunction with functional materials, encompassing bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronic devices.
