Abstract:Objective:To investigate the possible differences in biologic behaviors between squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. Methods:A retrospective review was performed on 273 patients with cervical cancer treated primarily at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from Jan.1997 to Mar.2006.Clinical and pathological variables such as carcinogenetic related factors, clinicopathological characteristics and 5 years survival rate were studied to find out the differences between squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. Results:In squamous cell carcinoma group and adenocarcinoma group, smokers accounted for 22% and 10% respectively, pap smear positivity were 80% and 46% respectively and patients with BMI≥24kg/m2 accounted for 15% and 34% respectively.Patients of FIGO stage I,II,III,IV of squamous cell carcinoma group were 42%,46%,11%,1% respectively and those in adenocarcinoma group were 31%,47%,12%,10% respectively. The ovarian metastasis rate and 5 years survival rate in two groups were 0.5%,6.7% and 69.9%,50.6% respectively. There were significant differences in all the above variables between the two groups(P<0.05).Conclusion:There are significant differences in carcinogenetic related factors, clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis between squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of uterine cervix. There are more smokers in squamous cell carcinoma group while more obese women or overweight women in adenocarcinoma group.Pap smear positive rate is higher in squamous cell carcinoma while there are more advanced cases and more ovarian metastasis in adenocarcinoma group. The prognosis of patients with adenocarcinoma is poor than that of patients with squamous cell carcinoma.
