Abstract:Whitney proved that 3-connected planar graphs can be embedded uniquely on the sphere. In general, such a graph may also have embeddings on different surfaces. Enami focused on cubic graphs and showed that a 3-connected cubic planar graph can be re-embedded on a surface of non-negative Euler characteristic if and only if the dual graph contains a specific subgraph. Motivated by applications to triangulated surfaces, we investigate strong re-embeddings and show that these are characterised by a subset of Enami's subgraphs. Additionally, we provide criteria for when a graph does not possess a strong re-embedding on the projective plane, the torus or the Klein bottle.

Abstract:Weak degeneracy is a variation of degeneracy which shares many nice properties of degeneracy. In particular, if a graph $G$ is weakly $d$-degenerate, then for any $(d + 1)$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, one can construct an $L$-coloring of $G$ by a modified greedy coloring algorithm. It is known that planar graphs of girth 5 are 3-choosable and locally planar graphs are 5-choosable. This paper strengthens these results and proves that planar graphs of girth 5 are weakly 2-degenerate and locally planar graphs are weakly 4-degenerate.

Abstract:We study two notions of fan-planarity introduced by (Cheong et al., GD22), called weak and strong fan-planarity, which separate two non-equivalent definitions of fan-planarity in the literature. We prove that not every weakly fan-planar graph is strongly fan-planar, while the upper bound on the edge density is the same for both families.

Abstract:Motivated by finding planar embeddings that lead to drawings with favorable aesthetics, we study the problems MINMAXFACE and UNIFORMFACES of embedding a given biconnected multi-graph such that the largest face is as small as possible and such that all faces have the same size, respectively. We prove a complexity dichotomy for MINMAXFACE and show that deciding whether the maximum is at most $k$ is polynomial-time solvable for $k \leq 4$ and NP-complete for $k \geq 5$. Further, we give a 6-approximation for minimizing the maximum face in a planar embedding. For UNIFORMFACES, we show that the problem is NP-complete for odd $k \geq 7$ and even $k \geq 10$. Moreover, we characterize the biconnected planar multi-graphs admitting 3- and 4-uniform embeddings (in a $k$-uniform embedding all faces have size $k$) and give an efficient algorithm for testing the existence of a 6-uniform embedding.

Maximum genus embeddings of dense eulerian graphs with specified faces

Abstract:We give a density condition for when, subject to a necessary parity condition, an eulerian graph or digraph may be cellularly embedded in an orientable surface so that it has exactly two faces, each bounded by an euler circuit, one of which may be specified in advance. More generally, suppose that every vertex in an $n$-vertex eulerian digraph (loops and multiple arcs allowed) has at least $(4n+2)/5$ neighbors, and specify any decomposition of the arcs into disjoint directed circuits (closed trails). We show that such a digraph has an orientable embedding in which the given circuits are facial walks and there are exactly one or two other faces. This embedding then has maximum genus relative to the given circuits being facial walks. When there is only one other face, it is necessarily bounded by an euler circuit. Consequently, if the numbers of vertices and edges have the same parity, a sufficiently dense digraph $D$ with a given directed euler circuit $T$ has an orientable embedding with exactly two faces, each bounded by an euler circuit, one of which is $T$. These results for digraphs give analogous results for graphs as immediate corollaries. The main theorem encompasses several special cases in the literature, such as when the digraph is a tournament.

On high genus extensions of Negami's conjecture

Abstract:Negami's famous planar cover conjecture is equivalent to the statement that a connected graph can be embedded in the projective plane if and only if it has a projective planar cover. In 1999, Hliněný proposed extending this conjecture to higher genus non-orientable surfaces. In this paper, we put forward a natural extension that encompasses orientable surfaces as well; for every compact surface $\Sigma$, a connected graph $G$ has a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ if and only if $G$ is embeddable in a surface covered by $\Sigma$. As evidence toward this, we prove that for every surface $\Sigma$, the connected graphs with a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ have bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we show that these extensions of Negami's conjecture are decidable for every compact surface of sufficiently large Euler genus, surpassing what is known for Negami's original conjecture. We also prove the natural analogue for countable graphs embeddable into a compact (orientable) surface. More precisely, we prove that a connected countable graph $G$ has a finite ply cover that embeds into a compact (orientable) surface if and only if $G$ embeds into a compact (orientable) surface. Our most general theorem, from which these results are derived, is that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every surface $\Sigma$, there exists a decreasing function $p_\Sigma:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\lim_{g\to \infty}p_\Sigma(g) =0$ such that every finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ of any connected graph with Euler genus $g\ge c$ has ply at most $p_\Sigma(g)$.

Weakly Leveled Planarity with Bounded Span

Abstract:This paper studies planar drawings of graphs in which each vertex is represented as a point along a sequence of horizontal lines, called levels, and each edge is either a horizontal segment or a strictly $y$-monotone curve. A graph is $s$-span weakly leveled planar if it admits such a drawing where the edges have span at most $s$; the span of an edge is the number of levels it touches minus one. We investigate the problem of computing $s$-span weakly leveled planar drawings from both the computational and the combinatorial perspectives. We prove the problem to be para-NP-hard with respect to its natural parameter $s$ and investigate its complexity with respect to widely used structural parameters. We show the existence of a polynomial-size kernel with respect to vertex cover number and prove that the problem is FPT when parameterized by treedepth. We also present upper and lower bounds on the span for various graph classes. Notably, we show that cycle trees, a family of $2$-outerplanar graphs generalizing Halin graphs, are $\Theta(\log n)$-span weakly leveled planar and $4$-span weakly leveled planar when $3$-connected. As a byproduct of these combinatorial results, we obtain improved bounds on the edge-length ratio of the graph families under consideration.

Weak Degeneracy of Planar Graphs

Abstract:The weak degeneracy of a graph $G$ is a numerical parameter that was recently introduced by the first two authors with the aim of understanding the power of greedy algorithms for graph coloring. Every $d$-degenerate graph is weakly $d$-degenerate, but the converse is not true in general (for example, all connected $d$-regular graphs except cycles and cliques are weakly $(d-1)$-degenerate). If $G$ is weakly $d$-degenerate, then the list-chromatic number of $G$ is at most $d+1$, and the same upper bound holds for various other parameters such as the DP-chromatic number and the paint number. Here we rectify a mistake in a paper of the first two authors and give a correct proof that planar graphs are weakly $4$-degenerate, strengthening the famous result of Thomassen that planar graphs are $5$-list-colorable.

We will determine $OE_g$ for each $g$, indeed the action realizing $OE_g$. In particular, with 23 exceptions, $OE_g$ is $4(g+1)$ if $g\ne k^2$ or $4(\sqrt{g}+1)^2$ if $g=k^2$, and moreover $OE_g$ can be realized by unknotted embeddings for all $g$ except for $g=21$ and $481$.

Abstract:Given a graph G and a parameter r , we define the r - local matroid of G to be the matroid generated by its cycles of length at most r . Extending Whitney's abstract planar duality theorem from 1932, we prove that for every r the r -local matroid of G is co-graphic if and only if G admits a certain type of embedding in a surface, which we call r - planar embedding . The maximum value of r such that a graph G admits an r -planar embedding is closely related to face-width, and such embeddings for this maximum value of r are quite often embeddings of minimum genus. Unlike minimum genus embeddings, these r -planar embeddings can be computed in polynomial time. This provides the first systematic and polynomially computable method to construct for every graph G a surface so that G embeds in that surface in an optimal way (phrased in our notion of r -planarity).

Abstract:A (possibly degenerate) drawing of a graph G in the plane is approximable by an embedding if it can be turned into an embedding by an arbitrarily small perturbation. We show that testing whether a piece-wise linear drawing of a planar graph G in the plane is approximable by an embedding can be carried out in polynomial time, if a desired embedding of G belongs to a fixed isotopy class. In other words, we show that c-planarity with embedded pipes is tractable for graphs with prescribed combinatorial embedding. To the best of our knowledge, an analogous result was previously known essentially only when G is a cycle.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze embeddings of grid graphs on orientable surfaces. We determine the genus of two infinite classes of 3-dimensional grid graphs that do not admit quadrilateral embeddings and effective upper bounds for the genus of any 3-dimensional grid graph, both in terms of a grid graph’s combinatorics. As an application, we provide a complete classification of planar and toroidal grid graphs. Our work requires a variety of combinatorial and graph theoretic arguments to determine effective lower bounds on the genus of a grid graph, along with explicitly constructing embeddings of grid graphs on surfaces to determine effective upper bounds on their genera.

Abstract:We first introduce the definitions of weak semi-Hopf group coalgebras, weak group entwining structures and weak group coalgebra Galois extensions, then we state that any weak group coalgebra. Galois extension induces a weak group entwining map compatible with the right group coaction. Notice that when the group is trivial our results axe just those of weak entwining structures in [3], at the same time they are also a generalization of group coalgebra Galois extensions and group entwining structures introduced by Shuan-hong Wang in [9].

Abstract:A maximal planar graph is a graph which can be embedded in the plane such that every face of the graph is a triangle. The center of a graph is the subgraph induced by the vertices of minimum eccentricity. We introduce the notion of quasi-eccentric vertices, and use this to characterize maximal planar graphs that are the center of some planar graph. We also present some easier to check only necessary / only sufficient conditions for planar and maximal planar graphs to be the center of a planar graph. Finally, we use the aforementioned characterization to prove that all maximal planar graphs of order at most 8 are the center of some planar graph -- and this bound is sharp.

Abstract:A \emph{book-embedding} of a graph $G$ is an embedding of vertices of $G$ along the spine of a book, and edges of $G$ on the pages so that no two edges on the same page intersect. the minimum number of pages in which a graph can be embedded is called the \emph{page number}. The book-embedding of graphs may be important in several technical applications, e.g., sorting with parallel stacks, fault-tolerant processor arrays design, and layout problems with application to very large scale integration (VLSI). Bernhart and Kainen firstly considered the book-embedding of the planar graph and conjectured that its page number can be made arbitrarily large [JCT, 1979, 320-331]. Heath [FOCS84] found that planar graphs admit a seven-page book embedding. Later, Yannakakis proved that four pages are necessary and sufficient for planar graphs in [STOC86]. Recently, Bekos et al. [STACS14] described an $O(n^{2})$ time algorithm of two-page book embedding for 4-planar graphs. In this paper, we embed 5-planar graphs into a book of three pages by an $O(n^{2})$ time algorithm.

Abstract:The symmetries of surfaces which can be embedded into the symmetries of the 3-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ3 are easier to feel by human’s intuition. We give the maximum order of finite group actions on (ℝ3, Σ) among all possible embedded closed/bordered surfaces with given geometric/algebraic genus greater than 1 in ℝ3. We also identify the topological types of the bordered surfaces realizing the maximum order, and find simple representative embeddings for such surfaces.

Abstract:In this work, we study how far one can deviate from optimal behavior when embedding a planar graph. For a planar graph $G$, we say that a plane subgraph $H\subseteq G$ is a \textit{plane-saturated subgraph} if adding any edge (possibly with new vertices) to $H$ would either violate planarity or make the resulting graph no longer a subgraph of $G$. For a planar graph $G$, we define the \textit{plane-saturation ratio}, $\psr(G)$, as the minimum value of $\frac{e(H)}{e(G)}$ for a plane-saturated subgraph $H$ of $G$ and investigate how small $\psr(G)$ can be. While there exist planar graphs where $\psr(G)$ is arbitrarily close to $0$, we show that for all twin-free planar graphs, $\psr(G)>1/16$, and that there exist twin-free planar graphs where $\psr(G)$ is arbitrarily close to $1/16$. In fact, we study a broader category of planar graphs, focusing on classes characterized by a bounded number of degree $1$ and degree $2$ twin vertices. We offer solutions for some instances of bounds while positing conjectures for the remaining ones.

Abstract:It is known that any periodic map of order $n$ on a closed oriented surface of genus $g$ can be equivariantly embedded into $S^m$ for some $m$. In the orientable and smooth category, we determine the smallest possible $m$ when $n\geq 3g$. We show that for each integer $k>1$ there exist infinitely many periodic maps such that the smallest possible $m$ is equal to $k$.
