Abstract:Three compounds, which comprise of benzo[e]indolinium luminophores with two different fluorescence wavelengths, have been synthesized. Those compounds have been prepared by condensation of benzo[e]indolinium and their counterpart aldehydes, and they were confirmed by H-NMR, MS, IR. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of them were tested. The influences of pH value and various solvents on their absorption and fluorescence spectra were summarized. At the same time, self-condensation of benzo[e]indolinium was found in the synthesis of three compounds above.

Abstract:Three novel 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives containing indole and indoline were synthesized through Fischer indole synthesis, reduction, and alkylation. Two reference dyes with similar structures to the three novel dyes were also prepared. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of these dyes in a variety of solvents were investigated. In addition, fluorescence of these dyes in solid state was also measured. Intramolecular charge transfer was confirmed within the new dyes by virtue of shifts in emission maximum with increasing solvent polarity. Intermolecular close contacts and lateral intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between neighboring columns lead to fluorescence wavelength shift, short in the solution and long in the solid state.

Abstract:Three reactive dyes, with bisbenzimidazole as the chromophore and bischlorotriazine as the active group, were synthesized and characterized. The photophysical properties of the dyes were discerned by UV-vis absorption, emission, and density functional theory calculations. All the dyes exhibited two absorption bands in the UV-vis region. The main band at 270 nm was attributed to the intramolecular pi-pi* transition, whereas the absorption at 360 nm was assigned to the pi-pi* mixed intramolecular charge transfer transitions. As the planarity of the benzimidazole components was enhanced, the energy gap of these dyes decreased, which caused a redshift. The relationship between the structure and dyeing properties of the dyes was also studied from the perspective of dyeing depth and fastness. The results showed that these dyes can be dyed on silk effectively, the dyeing depths were in the range of 0.08 similar to 35 under salt-free conditions and the dry/wet rubbing fastness of these dyes could reach grades 4-5. In summary, these reactive dyes could be potential dyes for salt-free dyeing applications.

Abstract:A series of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) molecules with multiple dicyanovinyl substitutes on triphenylamine were synthesized in good yields by Knoevenagel condensation of corresponding triphenylamine aldehydes and malonodinitrile. Photophysical property of these triphenylamine malonitrile dyes were studied, along with their intriguing solvatochromic behavior. The fluorescence emission of most dyes was highly sensitive to solvent polarity, yielding blue to yellow and even red fluorescence in different organic solvents. Both the fluorescence and the Stokes shifts were linearly dependent on the orientation polarizability (Δf) and empirical polarity parameter ET(30) according to Reichardt–Dimroth equation. Further analysis suggested that the solvatochromic behavior of these dyes was caused by dipole moment change upon excitation from ground to excited state.

Abstract:A series of indolizines were synthesized. The fluorescence spectra and fluorescence quantum yields of the compounds 3a - 3k, 4a - 4b and 5 - 6 were examined. It was found that the quantum yields increased if the cyano group was introduced into the indolizines, while the presence of carbonyl groups as substituents of indolizines resulted in fluorescence quenching. The indolizines 3a - 3b and 3g - 3i with high fluorescence quantum yields are shown to be useful fluorophores to the construction of probe compounds.

Abstract:The synthesis of furyl, thienyl and indole methine dyes derived from N-substituted-3-cyano-4-methyl-6-hydroxyl-2-pyridones has been achieved by condensation of pyridones with heteroaryl aldehydes. In addition, 5-amino-3-cyano-4-methyl-6-hydroxyl-1-ethyl-2-pyridone was synthesized and nitrosated to give an azamethine dye. The absorption properties of these novel cyanine dyes were investigated in various solvents.

Abstract:The hemicyanine and carboncyanine dyes with carboxyl group were synthesized and their structures confirmed by IR(Infrared spectroscopy),()~1H-NMR(nuclear magretic resonance) and UV-Vis(ultra violet-visible) spectroscopy.The effect of solvents and substituents on absorption and fluorescence spectra of the dyes was discussed.Solvent effects of the dyes were studied with Nicol theory.It was demonstrated that there is a good linear relationship between wavenumber of dye maximum absorption peak and function f(n,e) and the peaks would make a bathochromic shift with the increase of solvent(refractive) index.

Abstract:Three soluble perylene bisimides with carboxylic groups: N,N'-bis(5-carboxy-pentyl)-1,6,7,12-tetraphenoxy-3,4,9,10-perylene bisimide(3a),N,N'-bis(5carboxy-pentyl)-1,6,7,12-tetra(methyl-phenoxy)-3,4,9,10-perylene bisimide(3b) and N,N'-bis(5-carboxy-pentyl)-3,4,9,10-perylene bisimide(3c) are synthesized by the reaction of 6-amino-caproic acid and 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxy anhydride(1) and its two derivatives(2a,2b) which are synthesized through inducing four phenoxy groups and four methylphenoxy groups at the positions 1,6,7,and 12 of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxy anhydride(1) respectively.Their structures are confirmed by IR,~1H-NMR and element analysis,Their photoscopic properties are characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra.The red shifts of 44 nm and 54 nm and Stokes shifts of 34.1 nm and 30.0 nm of perylene bisimides are attributed to the introduction of four phenoxy groups and four methyl-phenoxy groups at the positions 1,6,7,and 12 of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxy anhydride respectively,while decreases of their fluorescence quantum yields are not obvious.

Abstract:Based on the molecular design and structural modification of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), two new BODIPY derivatives with meso-substituted functional indole moieties were successfully prepared. These new compounds were characterized by NMR, HRMS and FTIR, exhibiting the different UV–vis and PL spectral phenomena because of their varied molecular structures in various solvents and different degrees of negative solvatochromism. Theoretical calculations and CV results show that the substituted NO2 group at 5-position of indole is favorable for increasing the oxidation potential of the molecules, while the NH2 group is the opposite. These two BODIPY derivatives have different sensitivities to pH changes, and can be appropriately applied as cell imaging materials due to their good physical chemical characteristics and excellent biocompatibility. In particular, the fluorescence characteristics of BODIPY derivative with the substituted NH2 group at 5-position of indole show a good solvent viscosity dependence, highlighting its potential application for testing the intracellular viscosity changes of the living cell in disease diagnosis.

Abstract:Two new 8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl) substituted boron-dipyrromethene (BDP) dyes: 1,2,6,7-tetraethyl-4,4-difluoro-3,5-dimethyl-8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (5) and 4,4-difluoro-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexamethyl-8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (6) have been synthesized and their crystal structures are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The torsion angles of 8-phenyl ring and the indacene plane are 79.61° for 5 and 87.56° for 6, respectively. The absorption and steady-state fluorescence properties in different solvents have been investigated. The fluorescence quantum yields of the two dyes are lower in more polar solvents, which can be ascribed to the intramolecular charge transfer from the aniline to the BDP unit. Protonation of the aniline moiety at low pH in MeOH–H2O (1:1 v/v) solution causes a large fluorescence enhancement. The pKa values calculated from the pH dependent fluorescence emission spectra are 3.14 for 5 and 3.09 for 6, respectively. They are suitable as pH probes excitable with visible light.

Abstract:Two ESIPT-based isomeric cyanines were synthesized with significant bathochromic shift in the optical absorption λ abs and emission λ em , along with a very large Stokes shift. Probe 2 exhibited a longer conjugation and better photostability. Both compounds exhibited good selectivity for labeling the plasma membrane of prokaryotic cells and the hair cells of zebrafish.

Abstract:We prepared amino acid functionalized water-soluble perylene diimides: N,N′-bi(L-glutamic acid)-perylene-3,4;9,10-dicarboxylic diimide ( 1 ), N,N′-bi(L-phenylalanine acid)-perylene-3,4;9,10-dicarboxylic diimide ( 2 ), N,N′-bi(L-glutamic amine)-perylene-3,4;9,10-dicarboxylic diimide ( 3 ) and N,N′-bi(L-phenylalanine amine)-perylene-3,4;9,10-dicarboxylic diimide ( 4 ). The structures of 3 and 4 were confirmed by 1 H NMR, FT-IR and MS. The maximal absorption bands of compound 1 and 2 in concentrated sulfuric acid were red-shifted for about 48 and 74 nm, respectively, compared with that of Perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (PTCDA). Nearly no fluorescence was observed for compounds 1 and 2 in water, while compounds 3 and 4 were significantly water-soluble and had very high fluorescent quantum. The mechanism of the optical properties change was discussed, and the π - π stacking caused by H + led to the changes of fluorescence spectrum and absorption spectrum. The calculated molecular orbital energies and the frontier molecular orbital maps of compounds 1 – 2 based on density function theory (DFT) calculations were reported. Owing to the high water-soluble, the perylene derivatives 3 and 4 were successfully applied as high-performance fluorochromes for living hela cells imaging.

Abstract:Two new branched pyridinium inner salt dyes, 2,6-di[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (2) and 2,4,6-tri[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (3), with N-ethyl-carbazolyl as electron donor group and pyridine cation as electron acceptor group have been synthesized. Their single- and two-photon related fluorescence properties in various solvents have also been examined. These dyes exhibit stronger fluorescence emission relative to the corresponding linear counterpart and common pyridinium dyes with discrete cation and anion components. Three-branched organic dye 3 has a high fluorescence quantum yield as 0.12 and exhibits strong orange two-photon excited fluorescence at 608nm in THF with large two-photon absorption cross-section being 606GM.

Abstract:Advances in electronics and medical diagnostics have made organic dyes extremely popular as key functional materials. From a practical viewpoint, it is necessary to assess the spectroscopic and physicochemical properties of newly designed dyes. In this context, the condensation of 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid with electron-rich alkylaminobenzaldehyde derivatives has been described, resulting in a series of merocyanine-type dyes. These dyes exhibit intense blue-light absorption but weak fluorescence. An electron-donating alkylamino group at position C4 is responsible for the solvatochromic behavior of the dyes since the lone electron pair of the nitrogen atom is variably delocalized toward the barbituric ring, which exhibits electron-withdrawing properties. This was elucidated, taking into account the different geometry of the amino group. The intramolecular charge transfer in the molecules is responsible for the relatively high redshift in absorption and fluorescence spectra. Additionally, an increase in solvent polarity moves the absorption and fluorescence to lower energy regions. The observed solvatochromism is discussed in terms of the four-parameter Catalán solvent polarity scale. The differences in the behavior of the dyes were quantified with the aid of time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The obtained results made it possible to find regularities linking the basic spectroscopic properties of the compounds with their chemical structure. This is important in the targeted search for new, practically important dyes.

Abstract:Four novel borondipyrromethene (BDP) and -diindomethene (BDI) dyes with one or two (dimethylamino)styryl extensions at the chromophore were synthesized and spectroscopically investigated. An X-ray crystal structure shows that the extended auxochrome is virtually planar. All dyes thus display intense red/near infrared (NIR) absorption and emission. The (dimethylamino)styryl group induces a charge-transfer character that entails bright solvatochromic fluorescence, which is only quenched with increasing solvent polarity according to the energy-gap law. The dye with an additional dimethylanilino group at the meso position of BDP shows a remarkable switching of lipophilicity by protonation. Two dyes with an 8-hydroxyquinoline ligand at the meso position display quenched emission in the presence of Hg2+ or Al3+ owing to electron transfer from the excited BDP to the complexed receptor. The BDI dye presents a pH indicator with bright fluorescence and extremely low fluorescence anisotropy.

Abstract:The properties and the diazotisation process of 1-ethyl-5-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-5-amino-2-pyridone were described. The conditions of the coupling reaction were also discussed and a series of new azo dyes using 1-ethyl-5-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-amino-2-pyridone as diazo components were synthesized. The absorption properties of these new azo dyes were investigated in various solvents and the mixture solvent of chloroform/DMSO with different volume ratios.

Abstract:This paper reports synthesis method of a novel and unsymmetrical imidazole-indole carbonic cyanine. The structural of the novel compound is characterized by element analysis, IR, MS, NMR. In addition the properties in various emulsion were determined sensitometrically. A novel asymmetric class of sensitizing dye whose general formula is indicated below:[GRAPHICS]Where R-1,R-2,R-3,R-4=alkyl group, normally -CH3 or ethyl groups had been discovered and synthesized in series in our laboratory([1][2]). The preliminary applied test in different emulsion, especially in emulsion of printing domenstrated that the sensitizig dye with the structure (n=3,R-1=R-2=C2H5,R-3,R-4=CH3 etc) is featured by the high sensitizing efficiency, lower fog and without color residues left in developed and dried emulsion layer.From the contemporary concepts of spectral sensitization, between the crystal lattice of silver halide microcrystals and the supermolecules of aggregating sensitizing dyes, depending on the site occupation, there must be geometric correspondence and the energetically prior well-matched in band gap involved.Being as the second step, we are to prepare a new sensitizing dye of this class with R-2 = -(CH2-CH2)(n)-N-(CH3)(2). such a design of molecular attached to nitrogen atom is of prime importance for the reasons as follows: (1)Firstly we used the -(CH2-CH2)(n)-N-(CH3)(2) with somewhat electron expelling capacity to fine-tune the sensitizing peak to some extent to bathochromic shift as compared with the primitive sensitizing dye with R-2 = C2H5. (2) Secondly the existence of -(CH2-CH2)(n)-N-(CH3)(2). enables the aggregated dye supermolecule possess 2 occupied sites, one is the original, it is the[GRAPHICS]It means that such a sensitizing dye will be certain to have more probability to make occupied size selection, leading to higher sensitizing efficiency.Below a preliminary synthesis, characterization (element analysis, Infra-red, MS and NMR etc) and the sensitometric measurements in various emulsion is given. It tells the fact that the said sensitizing dye is deserved to be concerned and worthwhile to be expanded in emulsions with different purposes.
