Abstract:The generative mechanism of the Book of Songs, the Classic of Music, the Book of Changes, the Spring and Autumn Annals and other texts attracted the attention of learned men during the Warring States period and the Qin and Han dynasties. Two views gradually took shape. One emphasized that texts display natural human emotions, and the generation of the text participates in the generation process in a natural, irrational way; the text is thus something natural. This view can be called the “sounds of nature” theory. The other emphasized that the text is the carrier of humankind’s rational spirit and independent character, and that the generation of text is a highly individualized, rational and technical process, so the resulting text is something man-made. This view can be called the “works of authorship” theory. The two conceptions of text production present different textual values and aesthetics. As seminal ideas, they have had a significant influence on the development of Chinese literary history, and their competition and convergence have constituted one of the driving forces behind its development.

Abstract:In the beingness sense,the ancient Chinese philosophy of ens and nonexistence has had two different meanings.One of it is have form and have name,nonexistent form and nonexistent name; the other is esse and being,nihility and non-existent.In Lao-Tsze,what kinds of establishment that ens or nonexistence can stand on is not very clear,but its basic trend is have form and nonexistent form.In Zhuang-Zi,the book definitely use nonexistent form,nonexistent name to explain nonexistence.He Yan and Wang Bi,the representative of early a philosophical sect of the Wei and Jin Dynasties who make nonexistence to be vanity,use nonexistence to explain Tao,they protest respect nonexistence,disdain ens.After then,Pei Wei,Guo Xiang and some others protest,nonexistence cannot birth ens.Still later,in Northern Song Dynasty,Zhang Zai and Wang Fuzhi in Ming and Qing Dynasties,they start from the gas monism regard ens of nonexistence as different states of gas.No matter how to explain the meaning of ens or nonexistence,ancient Chinese philosophers all try to illustrate unitarity,globality and systematicness of world. Their only difference in the result is nonexistence unity in ens or ens unity in nonexistence.

Frontiers of Philosophy in China

Abstract:By analyzing Zhu Xi and Zhang Zai’s three representative explanatory paradigms—that of Feng Youlan, Mou Zongsan and Zhang Dainian, the paper tries to show that studying Chinese philosophy in a Western way and emphasizing logical consistency will unavoidably lead to the defects of simplicity and partiality. In addition to Buddhism and Daoism, Song-Ming philosophy had also absorbed thoughts from the Pre-Qin, Han, Wei and Jin dynasties. The existence of multiple philosophical thoughts and their new synthesis lead to internal contradictions in Song-Ming philosophy and Li Xue 理学 (Neo-Confucianism in the Song and Ming dynasties). The contradiction between the doctrine of tiandao 天道 (the way in which the world runs) and that of xinxing 心性 (mind and human nature) was even sharper. Li Xue and Xin Xue also overlapped one another. The transition from the doctrine of tiandao to that of xinxing was a long journey. It was begun by Zhu Xi in his later years, and was finally completed by Wang Yangming. Unveiling the complexity and special characteristics of Song-Ming philosophy is a task for scholars on the history of Chinese philosophy.

Abstract:Although the ancient Greek philosophers persist in some kind of simple microcosmic unchangeable sense to the nature of world,their discussions on the mode of existence,the state of motion and the mechanism of change for general things display the thought of wholeness and complexity.No matter Thales's theory of primordium based on water,Herakleitos's theory of primordium based on fire,or Anaximandros's theory of infinite resident invariant,and no matter Parmenides's theory of community of existence only,invariant and related,or Aristotle's theory of four-reason and theory that wholeness is prior to part,they show the thought of system wholeness to some extent and the thought that the things have the complexity of macroscopic constitution and evolution.

Abstract:In the history of Chinese literary criticism,the category of void and reality has been originated from the theory of "Existence and Nothingness" by "Lao Tzu" and Zhuang Tzu.And the works of "Zhou Yi" and "Lao Tzu" endow it with profound dialectical thoughts.These have become the philosophical basis for the emergence of "Void and Reality" theory during the Pre-Qin period,and have also established a basis for its further development and evolution in Wei and Jin dynasties,and consequently in Tang and Song dynasties.Its implication can't be separated from prose practice during this period,such as The book of "The Book of Odes","Li Sao",and so on.As a kernel primary category in Chinese history of literary criticism,"Void and Reality" is fundamentally an artistic creation method whose germ existed in ancient times.During the Pre-Qin period,trope,symbolism,and concrete images are its unconscious use in literature creation.From the perspective of philosophy,the combination of Void and Reality is inevitable.The trope and symbolism methods found in "The Book of Odes" and "Li Sao" are the invisible substitute and earlier "embryo" of the "Void and Reality" theory in later generations.The emergence of "Void and Reality" has certain relationship with the political argumentations in Qin and Han dynasties and with the poetic essays in Han Dynasty.

Abstract:Independent narration in Chinese philosophy has gone through the process of interpretation, critical differentiation, dialogue, and original thought, and so is a creative activity that surpasses the conjunctive pattern of universality and particularity. In modern Confucian studies, there has always been a tension between philosophical and historical explanations, which suggests a tension between ecumenical and indigenous experiences. Critical differentiation itself only has methodological significance, and is not a goal in itself. China’s development and strength has encouraged China to engage in philosophical dialogue with the West. It is the task and direction of future philosophical creativity to face the contemporary existence, re-construct Confucianism’s relationship with modern life, and respond in a metaphysical and positive manner to the challenges imposed by modernity.

Abstract:Qi,which is regarded as the basic material which constitutes all substances in the space and world,forms basic concepts of ancient Chinese philosophy of nature.The ancient Chinese yin-yang theory and five elements theory are entirely founded on qi monism.Guanzi Inner Work chapter formed in the Warring States period has preliminarily formed a qi monism embryo theory.From Zhang Zai to Luo Tingshun and Wang Tingxiang in the Song and Ming Dynasties and to Wang Fuzhi in the turn from Ming to Qing Dynasties,the qi monist doctrine was developed step by step and the theory was made more mature and perfect.It can be said that the qi monist doctrine always occupied a dominant position in ancient Chinese philosophy.The globality,systematicness togetherness of the thinking reflected by this doctrine still has many contents which may provide enlightenment and reference.
