Abstract:Objective: Loneliness is a psychological experience related to social isolation and perceived lack of companionship, and may be relevant to health risk. Loneliness is a common experience; as many as 80% of those under 18 years of age and 40% of adults over 65 years of age report being lonely at least sometimes(Berguno , Leroux , McAinsh & Shaikh ,2004; Pinquart S Weeks,1994). Several studies have indicated that loneliness may play a causative role in the development and maintenance of depression. For example, loneliness at the start of a college semester has been found to be predictive of depression later in the semester (Rich S Russell, Peplau, & Cutrona, 1980) but also that students experiencing loneliness often do not possess the social skills or social competence necessary to begin and develop close interpersonal relationships (Jones, Hobbs, & Hockenbury, 1982). This study will explore the relationships among rumination, self-efficacy, depressed mood and sleep quality in college population. Methods: This study will recruit 150 participants from one private university from Northern Taiwan. Participants complete a set of self-reported questionnaires. These including UCLA loneliness scale version 3(ULS-3), general self efficacy (GSE), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index ?Chinese (CPSQI), Chinese Response Style Questionnaire(CRSQ) and The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CESD). Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships. Results: We found that rumination and self-efficacy fully mediated the associations between loneliness and depressed mood as well as poor sleep quality; these relationships held after testing all other factors. This study helps explain how loneliness dynamics relate to poor health and suggests specific points of departure for the development of interventions.
