Abstract:The disadvantages of traditional hydraulic circuits regulating speed with a throttle or variable displacement are first analyzed;then. the advantages and development background of variable frequency hydraulic technology are introduced. This article pointed out that the variable frequency hydraulic system is an overall energy-saving system which can realize power match from the main power supply to execution mechanism. Development and application as well as the research situation of variable frequency hydraulic technology are described in detail. The problems in variable frequency hydraulic technology are discussed, which mainly involve low velocity stability, response time, startup or direction changing smoothness, velocity tracking precision and efficiency. Some kinds of solutions for these problems are presented. In the last part of the article, the developing prospect of variable frequency hydraulic technology is given.
Turbo-Cool Turbocharging System for Spark Ignition Engines

Abstract:The problem of matching a turbocharging system to a piston engine is investigated. The variable-geometry turbine (VGT) turbocharger used for spark ignition (SI) engine application is studied in some detail. A critical factor that has been overlooked in considering VGT turbochargers for SI engine application in the past is the backpressure to the piston engine and, consequently, the resulting residual gas and its effect on the temperature of the in-cylinder mixture at the beginning of combustion. That is, VGT turbocharger operation affects engine backpressure, which affects the in-cylinder mixture temperature, which affects the tendency for engine knock, which limits engine performance. The higher backpressure also raises the turbine entry temperature. A new turbocharging system named Turbo-Cool is proposed in this paper. The Turbo-Cool turbocharging system utilizes more complete exhaust gas expansion in the turbine to achieve a higher engine effective expansion ratio (EER) in a straightforward manner. The novelty of the concept is that the excess power from higher exhaust gas expansion through the turbine (rather than being considered as an object for power recovery, as in the classical turbocompound concept) is used for conditioning intake charge air for the purpose of engine loss reduction. The validation of the proposed concept is carried out using a commercial engine simulation code. The simulation results show that the Turbo-Cool turbocharging system and the VGT turbocharger are indispensable to each other in producing engine performance of superior brake mean effective pressure (b.m.e.p.) and excellent torque back-up, as well as improved engine efficiency. It is argued that the Turbo-Cool turbocharging system is a basic design that might bring about the full potential benefits of turbocharging for SI engines.

Abstract:The application of variable nozzle on turbocharger gain the performance of engine. A design for turbine variable nozzle vane is presented, Based on 1-D calculation result, the variable nozzle cascades structure is set up. The aerodynamic vane profile of the nozzle is shaped by using B-spline curve. In this way, the gas flow is sure to accelerate inside the passage at different state, the gas velocity at the nozzle outlet is increased and the flow loss is reduced. The results of three-dimensional numerical simulation show that the performance of the designed variable nozzle vane is good in different state.

Abstract:Starting from essential theory of wavelet and wavelet packet transform , this paper presents an analysis of the starting current of a DC motor, a typical nonstationa ry signal. The results showed that due to the distinct superiority of WT and WPT in timefrequency analysis of nonstationary signals, Tn characteristic, wa s ob tained with satisfactory precision. And consequently a fast Tn characteri stic tes t with neither torque nor speed sensor was implemented. Similar method ca n be generalized to AC motor performance test after proper adaption.
A novel variable geometry turbine achieved by elastically restrained nozzle guide vanes

Abstract:Variable geometry turbocharging is one of the most significant matching methods between turbocharger and engine, and has been proven to provide air boost for entire engine speed range as well as to reduce turbo-lag. An elastically constrained device designed for a novel variable geometry turbocharger was presented in this paper. The design of the device is based on the nozzle vane’s self-adaptation under interactions of the elastic force by elastically restrained guide vane and the aerodynamic force from flowing gas. The vane rotation mechanism of the novel variable geometry turbocharger is different from regular commercial variable geometry turbocharger systems, which is achieved by an active control system (e.g. actuator). To predict the aerodynamic performance of the novel variable geometry turbocharger, the flow field of the turbine was simulated using transient computational fluid dynamics software combined with a fluid–structure interaction method. The results show that the function of elastically constrained device has similar effectiveness as the traditional variable geometry turbocharger. In addition, the efficiency of the novel variable geometry turbocharger is improved at most operating conditions. Furthermore, a turbocharged diesel engine was created using the AVL BOOST software to evaluate the benefits of the new variable geometry turbocharger. The proposed novel variable geometry turbocharger can effectively improve the engine performance at mid-high speeds, such that the maximum decrease of brake-specific fuel consumption reaches 17.91% under 100% load and 3600 r/min engine condition. However, the engine power and brake-specific fuel consumption decrease significantly at low engine speed conditions, and the decrease is more than 26% under 1000 r/min.

Abstract:Design of variable nozzle vane is the key for variable nozzle turbocharger (VNT) design. A VNT was constructed by assembling a variable nozzle into a conventional turbocharger with vaneless nozzle. The design methods and processes of the variable nozzle were presented in detail, which include thermodynamic design, structural and mechanical design, and CFD analysis. The CFD analysis showed that the aerodynamic performance of the variable nozzle was well accepted in different open positions. The engine-matching test showed that, the performance of the engine improved significantly with the VNT compared to the prototype turbocharger. The engine fuel consumption was reduced by 8.1g/Kw·h and the maximum torque increased by 250 N·m.
An Engine System Approach to Improve Turbocharger Fatigue Life

Abstract:The ultimate goal of an advanced turbocharger development is to have a superior aerodynamic performance while having the turbocharger survive various real world customer applications. Due to the uncertainty of customer usage and driving pattern, the fatigue life prediction is considered one of the most ambiguous analyses in the entire design and analyses processes of the turbocharger. The turbocharger system may have various resonant frequencies, which may be within the range of turbocharger operation for automotive applications. A turbocharger may operate with excessive stresses when running near resonant frequencies. The turbocharger may experience fatigue failures if the accumulative cycles of the turbocharger running across the resonant frequencies exceeds a certain limit. In this study, the authors propose an alternative approach to mitigate this kind of fatigue issues: i.e. engine system approach to improve turbocharger fatigue life via avoiding operating the turbocharger near resonant speeds for extended period of time. A preliminary numerical study was made and presented in this paper to assess the feasibility of such an engine system approach, which is followed by an engine dynamometer test for engine performance sensitivity evaluation when the turbocharger operation condition was adjusted to improve the high cycle fatigue life. The study shows that for a modern diesel engine equipped with electrically controlled variable geometry turbine and EGR for emission control, through the engine calibration and control upgrade, turbocharger operation speed can be altered to stay away from certain critical speeds if necessary. The combined 1D and 3D numerical simulation shows the bandwidth of the turbine “risk zone” near one of the resonant speeds and the potential impact on engine performances if the turbocharger speed has to be shifted out of the “risk zone.”

Abstract:A new turbo-charging system, named AVIEIT (automatically variable intake exhaust injection timing), is proposed. Its main purpose is to improve the performance of low speed high torque operating conditions and improve the economy of high speed operating conditions for high-speed supercharged inter-cooled diesel engines. The principle of the AVIEIT turbo-charging system is presented. A control mechanism for the proposed AVIEIT system used for a truck diesel engine is introduced. An engine simulation code has been developed. In this code, zero-dimensional in-cylinder combustion model, one-dimensional FVM-TVD (finite volume method-total variation diminishing) model for unsteady gas flow in the intake and exhaust manifold, and turbocharger model are used. The developed code is used to simulate the performances of diesel engines using the AVIEIT system. Simulations of a military use diesel engine "12V150" and a truck diesel engine "D6114" using the AVIEIT system have been performed. Simulation results show that the in-cylinder charge air amount of the diesel engine with the AVIEIT system is increased at low speed high torque operating conditions, and the fuel economy is improved at high speed operating conditions. In order to test the idea of the AVIEIT system, an experiment on a truck diesel engine "D6114" equipped with an AVIEIT control mechanism has been finished. The experiment results show that the AVIEIT system can improve economy of high speed operating conditions. Both the simulation and experiment results suggest that the AVIEIT system has the potential to replace the Waste-Gate and VGT turbo-charging systems.
Engine performance improvements through turbocharger matching and turbine design

Abstract:A design of experiments was used to optimize the turbocharger and engine performance for different turbocharger factors. An optimally matched turbocharger was obtained under the conditions of the current turbocharger technologies. The multidisciplinary optimization method was used to design a mixed flow turbine wheel to reduce the turbine velocity ratio at peak efficiency and increase the overall turbocharger efficiency. Results showed that about 0.4% torque improvements and 1.2% reductions in the engine brake‐specific fuel consumption were obtained without making any other changes to the engine. It is interesting to improve engine system performance with turbocharger technologies. In this study, a systematic simulation for engine and turbocharger matching to provide full utilization of the turbocharger potential and improve the engine performance without sacrificing the emission is developed. A velocity ratio concept was proposed to count the turbocharger performance impacts due to the diameter ratio of compressor and turbine wheels. A design of experiments was used to optimize the turbocharger and engine performance for different turbocharger factors. A better‐matched turbocharger was obtained. Abstract:It has been proven that the turbocharger turbine operates differently under unsteady flow conditions as compared to steady flow. Despite this, the turbine wheel is still designed under the assumption of steady flow conditions. This results in overprediction of the efficiency during actual conditions, which are always pulsating because of the reciprocating nature of an internal combustion engine. The difficulties in characterizing turbine behavior under pulsating flow conditions is attributable to complexities in characterizing the mass flow imbalance and its deviation from steady-state conditions. This paper attempts to describe the mass flow hysteresis properties that occur as a result of the filling and emptying phenomena as the flow frequency is increased from 20 to 60 Hz for vaned and vaneless turbine stators. The phenomena, coupled with difficulties in obtaining instantaneous mass flow rate, resulted in a complex experimental arrangement. Results indicated that the hysteresis properties of each frequency differ substantially, depending on the differences of the propagation velocity between the bulk flow and pressure. The hysteresis loop for vaned turbines also seems to have a larger range than its vaneless counterpart. (c) 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:The exhaust back pressure of diesel engines is becoming increasingly higher nowadays. In order to keep discharging exhaust unhindered and operating smoothly under high exhaust back pressure, a large reduction in engine maximum brake output is often observed, as well as increased fuel consumption and lower combustion efficiency with heavy exhaust smokes. In our previous study, "Applicability of Reducing Valve Timing Overlap for Diesel Engines under High Exhaust Back Pressure", a reduced valve timing overlap of 12 °CA partially improves the brake output and BSFC for a fixed-geometry turbocharged diesel engine under high exhaust back pressures. A potential solution for restoring the brake output under high exhaust back pressures could be the use of variable-geometry turbochargers. In this study, a variable-geometry turbocharger is applied to a diesel engine to study the engine performance characteristics and applicability, especially the further improvement of brake output and the brake-specific fuel consumption of the engine. Continuing with the results of our previous research, a basic setting of 12 °CA for the valve timing overlap is set up for the subsequent engine performance simulations in this study (using GT-Power SW). Via simulation, exhaust back pressures of 25 kPa, 45 kPa, and 65 kPa gauge are studied for a turbocharged diesel engine. The results for the engine parameters, including brake output, brake-specific fuel consumption, compressor outlet temperature, turbine inlet temperature, intake air mass flow rate, and exhaust mass flow rate are analyzed. The results of the variable-geometry turbocharger, including turbocharger speed, pressure ratios and efficiencies of compressor and turbine are also analyzed. The results indicate that the brake output and brake-specific fuel consumption are effectively improved under full-load operation with an adequate variable-geometry turbocharger rack position. Operable ranges of rack position are also set up for different back pressures.

Abstract:Transportation sector constitutes a major portion in the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions of the world. Reduction of GHG emission requires the development of highly efficient Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) which are downsized using turbochargers that provide compressed air for cleaner combustion. Variable Geometry (VG) turbochargers are widely accepted for this application because of the ability of VG turbine to function at wider flow range. This ensures the supply of compressed air at low engine speeds also. However, the interaction between stator vanes and turbine rotor has been a major issue in terms of High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) of such a turbocharger. Till now, a conservative design approach constrained the maximum rotation speed to below resonance speed for vibration mode 2. But, to achieve further downsizing it would be necessary to challenge higher rotation speeds. This paper will firstly introduce the tip-timing experiment and CFD-FEA simulations used to evaluate the HCF of VG turbine, and secondly it discusses the results of new VG turbine system which achieved safe operability even at vibration mode 3, both on simulation and experiment. The tip-timing experiment was conducted at 680°C on hot gas stand test bench with optical sensors installed circumferentially around the rotor tip. These measurements have been verified and validated with the safety factor calculated from blade surface pressure data obtained from transient rotor CFD simulations.

Abstract:In this review, a summary and discussion of the current state of the art on computational and experimental analysis of unsteady flow effects on turbocharger turbine performance is presented. The numerical methods, for CFD analysis are first introduced and explained together with their unique advantages and limitations. Details on several approaches and test facilities used in experimental analysis of unsteady flow effects on turbine performance are compared and criticised. Conclusions of the results and discussion comprise recommendations for more accurate acquisition of data and justifications for future work needed in this field, including a twin entry volute design alteration that could reduce pulse energy loss.
Improving Vibration Response of Radial Turbine in Variable Geometry Turbochargers With CFD Analysis

Abstract:Abstract Recent advancements in internal combustion engine for efficient fuel combustion, such as application of miller cycle, where the closing of engine intake valve is purposely delayed to provide more cooling of air-fuel mixture during compression stroke for better engine efficiency, has led to a requirement for turbochargers to function at a wider operating range and higher compression ratio. One of the methods which have been largely accepted is the use of variable geometry turbochargers. As compared to diesel engine, operating conditions for gasoline engine require the turbine to operate at higher exhaust temperature, which increases the risk of damaging the rotor. This paper discusses a detailed flow analysis of the effect of tip leakage and nozzle vane wake flow on surface pressure distribution of the turbine rotor, especially at the severe condition when vane trailing edge and rotor leading edge are in proximity. It was observed in steady and unsteady CFD simulations that the origination and propagation of tip leakage flow can be varied depending on the blade loading at the rotor leading edge, and the major interaction of nozzle wake can be switched from pressure surface to suction surface as rotor blade crossed a nozzle vane, which can drastically affect the alternating aerodynamic stresses. The sensitivity to this phenomenon has been evaluated by calculating the safety factor. The authors modified the rotor design to weaken the effect of tip leakage flow in order to suppress variations in rotor surface pressure as it crosses the nozzle vane. It significantly reduced the alternating stress and increased the safety factor at vibration mode 2 from 0.3 to 9.3 and mode 3 from 0.6 to 3.2 respectively.

Abstract:Matching of a two-stage turbocharging system is important for high efficiency engines because the turbocharger is the most effective method of exhaust heat recovery. In this study, we propose a method to match a two-stage turbocharging system for high efficiency over the entire range of operational conditions. Air flow is an important parameter because it influences combustion efficiency and heat load performance. First, the thermodynamic parameters of the engine and the turbocharging system are calculated in eight steps for selecting and matching the turbochargers. Then, by designing the intercooler intensity, distribution of pressure ratio, and compressor operational efficiency, it is ensured that the turbochargers not only meet the air flow requirements but also operate with high efficiency. The concept of minimum total drive power of the compressors is introduced at a certain boost pressure. It is found that the distribution of pressure ratio of the high- and low-pressure (LP) turbocharger should be regulated according to the engine speed by varying the rack position of the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to obtain the minimum total drive work. It is verified that two-stage turbochargers have high efficiency over the entire range of operational conditions by experimental research. Compared with the original engine torque, low-speed torque is improved by more than 10%, and the engine low fuel consumption area is broadened.
Potential of Variable-Geometry Method for Compressor Range Extension for Turbocharged Engines

Abstract:Increasingly stringent requirements on fuel economy and emissions are propelling turbocharging technology to improve the power density of engines. In the future, turbocharged engines with ultrahigh-power density must be equipped with high-pressure compressors. However, the narrow stable operating range of a compressor at a high-pressure ratio is always a restriction. The variable-geometry method, which refers to the combination of a variable-inlet prewhirl and variable diffuser vanes in this paper, will be a preferred choice for the range extension of compressors, and so estimating its potential for range extension is of long-term value. This paper investigated the performance of a centrifugal compressor adopting the variable-geometry method via a steady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulation. The combination of variable diffuser vanes, ranging from -10 to 10deg, and a variable-inlet prewhirl, ranging from -20 to 60deg, has the potential to improve the stable operating range from 23.5 to 63.0% at a pressure ratio of 4.8. The corresponding increase in the low-end engine torque is estimated to be 53%. The combination shows advantages in terms of operating range and efficiency performance over only adjusting the diffuser vanes or simply changing the inlet prewhirl. The contributions from the variable-inlet prewhirl and variable diffuser vanes to the shifts of the surge line and choke line are discussed as well.
Off-Design Analysis And Flow Control Of Centrifugal Compressor For Vehicle Engine Turbocharger

Abstract:To improve vehicle engine overall performance, an off-design analysis method of centrifugal compressor is presented. Mismatching degree is involved in the off-design analysis method. The mismatching degree of compressor flow fields of different working conditions is investigated, and flow control method of the compressor is proposed to decrease the mismatching degree and improve performance of the off-design point of the compressor. As an example, a diesel engine turbocharger centrifugal compressor is analyzed and optimized. The maximum mismatching degree of different working conditions locates at the leading edge of the main blades near shroud, and vaned shroud is presented to decrease the mismatching degree. Simulation shows that the maximum mismatching degree of the centrifugal compressor with vaned shroud decreases significantly, and experimental results show that the performance of the centrifugal compressor with vaned shroud is improved and pressure ratio is increased by 3.1% and efficiency by 1.7% at 80,000 RPM near surge.

Abstract:Turbocompounding is a key technology to satisfy the future requirements of diesel engine’s fuel economy and emission reduction. A turbocompound diesel engine was developed based on a conventional 11-Liter heavy-duty diesel engine. The turbocompound system includes a power turbine, which is installed downstream of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) turbine. The impacts of the VGT rack position on the turbocompound engine performance were studied. An optimal VGT control strategy was determined. Experimental results show that the turbocompound engine using the optimal VGT control strategy achieves better performance than the original engine under all full load operation conditions. The averaged and maximum reductions of the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) are 3% and 8% respectively.

Abstract:The effect of transmission ratio between power turbine and diesel engine crank power on the performances and the fuel economy was investigated for the application of turbo-compound system with Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) on a heavy duty diesel engine. A one-dimensional model was established to simulate the turbo-compound engine and optimize the matching of the power turbine and turbocharger with the engine. A turbo-compound prototype diesel engine was developed based on a conventional 11-L heavy-duty diesel engine, and then tested to investigate the impacts of the openness of the VGT on the turbo-compound engine performances, and to ifne the most optimal control strategy. The results show that the turbo-compound engine is better than the original machine under engine ful load operation conditions. The brake speciifc fuel consumption (BSFC) increases 3% on average with a maximum BSFC of 8%. Therefore, turbo-compounding is a key technology to satisfy the future requirements of diesel engine’s energy conservation and emission reduction.
Design of Pulse Generator Used in Transient Performance Experiment of Turbocharger Turbine

Abstract:For the pulse pressure wave of gasoline engine exhaust,a pulse generator that could simulate the exhaust pulse on turbocharger test bench was developed and verified experimentally by measuring the pulse pressure waves generated with the designed pulse generator at different engine speeds.The results show that the pulse generator can simulate the exhaust pulse of gasoline engine very well,which provides a method for turbine transient performance experiment.
