Abstract:Objective To study the effect of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) on metabolism, immune function and complications after large abdominal operations. Methods Seventy-nine cases undergoing large abdominal operations were retrospectively divided into two groups, treatment group (received rhGH from the second day after operation for 7 days) and control group (received physiological saline). The effect of rhGH was evaluated in terms of protein metabolism, wound healing, and incidence of complications. Results There was no significant difference in levels of albumin, prealbumin, and transferrin between two groups before treatment. Levels of prealbumin and transferin in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group 3 days after treatment. Levels of albumin, prealbumin, and transferrin in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group 7 days after treatment. Wound healing turned out to be better and fewer complications occurred in the treatment group. Conclusion rhGH can improve immune function and wound healing, and reduce the incidence of complications in cases with large abdominal operation.
