Abstract:A fast wavelet-multipole method (WMM) has been developed to achieve further speedup for the boundary element method in solving the direct boundary integral equations. The main idea is to compute the right-hand-side vector by the fast multipole method and to solve the linear system by the wavelet compression method. By using the variable order moments, almost linear complexity can be obtained. The primary advantages of the present WMM lie in that it (1) permits efficient implementation; (2) is universal in handling practical problems with complicated geometries. Numerical examples with around 1 million unknowns, performed on nontrivial geometries, clearly show that the WMM can shorten the total computational time by reducing the time for computing the right-hand-side.

Abstract:A new T-wavelet boundary element method(BEM) in which the boundary integral equations are discretized by Galerkin scheme is proposed.The T-wavelets are transformed from the nodal basis functions and then are used to compress the BEM matrices.Moreover,a fast matrix computation method is presented,where the moment matrices with respect to the normal derivatives of the Taylor polynomials are obtained by a multilevel transformation from the moment matrices with respect to the Taylor polynomials.The proposed method adopts only one T-wavelet basis to reduce the computational complexity.The existing matrix compression methods can be employed in the proposed method.Two representative capacitance extraction examples show that the computational time and memory requirements for wavelet construction can be reduced by half of the original method without obvious reduction of the accuracy.

Abstract:A fully discrete Galerkin boundary element method (BEM) based on Alpert multiwavelets is proposed for fast solution of Laplace's boundary integral equations in two dimensions. To make it more suitable for practical use, the highest resolution levels in the boundary patches are allowed to be different from each other. New patch and level dependent cut-off parameters which can compress the nonzero entries to at most O(NlogN) (where N is the degrees of freedom) are presented. A diagonal preconditioner is utilized to improve the system matrix. To evaluate the logarithmic singular double integrals more efficiently, coordinate transformations are introduced to remove the singularities. Numerical results show that the method can achieve O(NlogN) complexity.

Abstract:We present an improvement to the wavelet Galerkin BEM in [J. Tausch, A variable order wavelet method for the sparse representation of layer potentials in the non-standard form, J. Numer. Math. 12 (3) (2004) 233–254]. In the non-standard form representation of integral operators the number of wavelets in every level determines the efficiency of the underlying Galerkin scheme. In order to increase this number, the partial singular value decomposition (PSVD) of the moment matrix is employed. Since the resulting wavelets do not exactly satisfy the conventional vanishing moment condition, i.e. a certain number of polynomial moments of the wavelets are zero, we introduce the concept of “quasi-vanishing moment”. For integral equations of the second kind we prove that the asymptotic convergence of the full Galerkin scheme can be retained by controlling the cut-off for singular values in the PSVD appropriately. Numerical results show that our improvement can largely decrease the time and memory usage while preserving the optimal convergence rate of the method.

Abstract:The lifting wavelet like transform (LWLT) is applied to the fast multipole method (FMM) to complete the scattering analysis of three-dimensional (3D) objects. The aggregation matrix and disaggregation matrix are sparsified by the LWLT scheme in time. Numerical results for different. shaped three-dimensional objects are considered. It is shown that the proposed method can speed up FMM with lower memory required.

Abstract:The success of the wavelet boundary element method (BEM) depends on its matrix compression capability. The wavelet Galerkin BEM (WGBEM) based on non-standard form (NS-form) in Tausch (J Numer Math 12(3): 233–254, 2004) has almost linear memory and time complexity. Recently, wavelets with the quasi-vanishing moments (QVMs) have been used to decrease the constant factors involved in the complexity estimates (Xiao in Comput Methods Appl Mech Eng 197:4000–4006, 2008). However, the representations of layer potentials in QVM bases still have much more negligible entries than predicted by a-priori estimates, which are based on the separation of the supports of the source- and test-wavelets. In this paper, we introduce an a-posteriori compression strategy, which is designed to preserve the convergence properties of the underlying Galerkin discretization scheme. We summarize the different compression schemes for the WGBEM and demonstrate their performances on practical problems including Stokes flow, acoustic scattering and capacitance extraction. Numerical results show that memory allocation and CPU time can be reduced several times. Thus the storage for the NS-form is typically less than what is required to store the near-field interactions in the well-known fast multipole method.

Abstract:PurposeThis paper seeks to present a wavelet Galerkin boundary element method (WGBEM) for solving 2D Laplace's equation in which the coefficient matrices are exactly computed through fast Fourier transform (FFT).Design/methodology/approachWhen Daubechies periodized wavelets are used to approximate smooth functions the wavelet coefficients can be exactly computed through FFT, and numerical evaluation of wavelet integrations is discarded. The same methods for computing the expansion coefficients of 2D function and singular function are derived.FindingsFor Daubechies periodized wavelets based WGBEM, two remarkable advantages over the existing WGBEM are: the coefficient matrices can be exactly calculated through FFT; a linear system with potential and flux values at dyadic points as unknowns can be gained. Thus, the mixed boundary condition can be enforced with ease. Sparse matrices with only O(N log N) nonzero entries are obtained by performing the fast wavelet transform (FWT) and the truncation of matrix entries.Originality/valueA wavelet‐integration‐free method for computing the wavelet coefficients is introduced into the WGBEM. The conventional numerical evaluation of wavelet integrations is avoided. Good performance and accuracy are obtained.

Abstract:Combined with the fast multipole method, the boundary element method (BEM) becomes quite efficient to deal with large-scale engineering and scientific problems. The outline of the FMBEM (fast multipole BEM) was introduced at first, the accuracy and efficiency were then verified and compared with the conventional BEM, and a parallel algorithm of FMBEM for PC cluster was briefly presented. Some applications were presented, including: 2D and 3D simulation of composite materials, simulation of 2D elastic solid containing large numbers of cracks and fatigue crack growth. A new approach of FMBEM for elasto-plasticity problems was also proposed.

Abstract:Using the simple Green function as basic solution, this paper applies the fast multipole method (FMM) to the higher order boundary element method (HOBEM) so that the computation cost and storage of the computer are reduced to order of O(Nlog N) and O(N) respectively, where N is the number of unknowns. In the present algorithm, FMM is mainly applied to calculate the matrix/vector product and the resulting algebraic equation is solved by an iterative method. Numerical examinations, on the flow diffraction from a stationary sphere in an unbounded domain, are carried out to demonstrate the capability and accuracy of the present method. And the calculation results show that FMM HOBEM is much faster and more efficient than the traditional HOBEM with proportional square order computation cost and storage of the computer, and is suggested for use in large-scale engineering problems.

Abstract:This paper presents a fast multipole boundary element method (BEM) for the analysis of two-dimensional elastoplastic problems. An incremental iterative technique based on the initial strain approach is employed to solve the nonlinear equations, and the fast multipole method (FMM) is introduced to achieve higher runtime and memory storage efficiency. Both of the boundary integrals and domain integrals are calculated by recursive operations on a quad-tree structure without explicitly forming the coefficient matrix. Combining multipole expansions with local expansions, computational complexity and memory requirement of the matrix-vector multiplication are both reduced to O(N), where N is the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs). Fast Multipole Expansion Method and Its Application in Bem for Wave Diffraction and Radiation

Abstract:The application of boundary element method (BEM) is difficult for some large practical problems. In this paper a fast multipole expansion method (FMM) in the cylindrical coordinate system is used in BEM for wave diffraction/radiation problems of structures. This method can reduce the memory requirements and the operation count to O(N). When this method is used in HOBEM, a direct method is implemented for computing the free-term coefficient and the Cauchy principal value (CPV) integral. In order to verify this method, the added mass, the radiation damping and the excited force loads on floating boxes and cylinders are calculated and compared with available analytical results. The comparison shows that the present calculations have a good agreement with the analytical results. To take advantage of the method, we carried out a series of convergent experiments on the CPM and the HOBEM. The conclusion can be drawn that it is hard to obtain convergent results by the CPM, especial for the added mass and the radiation damping; but the convergence of the HOBEM is very fast.

Abstract:The fast multipole method(FMM) was used with the boundary element method(BEM) to predict fractures in large castings.The algebraic equation from the dual boundary integral equations(DBIE) was solved using the generalized minimum residual method(GMRES).A quad-tree data structure was constructed to execute the FMM with the matrix-vector product obtained using recursive operations on the tree structure without explicitly forming the coefficient matrix.Both the computational complexity and the memory requirements are reduced to O(N),where N is the number of degrees of freedom(DOFs).An improved preconditioner for the GMRES was also developed to increase the run-time speed and memory storage efficiency.Numerical experiments show that the preconditioner significantly increases the computational scale and computing efficiency with up to 3 000 000 DOFs used in numerical examples.

Improved Perturbation Approach and Fast Wavelet Galerkin BEM for Capacitance Extraction

Abstract:We describe an improved perturbation approach for electrostatic analysis of three-dimensional structures consisting of dielectrics with high-permittivity ratios. Unlike original perturbation approach, the new approach uses only one system matrix with different right hand sides. A fast wavelet Galerkin boundary element method (WGBEM) is used to solve integral equations. Compared with wavelets defined in parameter spaces in a conventional WGBEM, the wavelets here are directly constructed on usual boundary element triangulation. It enables the proposed WGBEM to solve electrostatic problems in complicated geometries, unstructured meshes and comparatively coarse discretizations. Numerical results show that the improved perturbation approach combined with WGBEM has high accuracy and almost linear computational complexity.

Abstract:Existing T-wavelet boundary element method(BEM) uses Galerkin scheme to discretize boundary integral equations,in which the evaluation of double integrals is complication and time-consuming.A method for constructing T-wavelet using Dirac δ-function is first proposed.By adopting these new wavelets as test functions in weighted residual method,a T-wavelet collocation BEM is then established.The method only involves single-layer integrals,thus easy to realize.Two representative real-world examples clearly show the O(NlgN) computational time and O(N) memory requirements of the method.
High Performance Parallel Computations of 3-D Fast Multipole Boundary Element Method

Abstract:A high-performance parallel computation was developed using the fast multipole boundary element method (BEM). The parallel solver is based on an adaptive new-version of the fast multipole BEM using the 3-D quadratic boundary elements and equal-accuracy quadrature. A measurement-based load-balancing scheme is used for the parallel computing targeting on the distributed architecture. Numerical examples show that this method maintains the high accuracy of high-order boundary elements, achieves satisfactory parallel efficiency for structures with irregular shapes, and significantly enhances the scale of solvable problems in comparison with the conventional BEM. The methodology provides an efficient way to solve large-scale complex engineering problems using BEM.

Abstract:The boundary element method (BEM) is a main method for analyzing the interactions between the waves and the marine structures. As with the BEM, a set of linear equations are generated with a full matrix, the required calculations and storage increase rapidly with the increase of the structure scale. Thus, an accelerated method with a low storage is desirable for the wave interaction with a very large structure. A systematic review is given in this paper for the BEM for solving the problem of the wave interaction with a large scale structure. Various integral equations are derived based on different Green functions, the advantages and disadvantages of different discretization schemes of the integral equations by the constant panels, the higher order elements, and the spline functions are discussed. For the higher order element discretization method, the special concerns are given to the numerical calculations of the single-layer potential, the double layer potential and the solid angle coefficients. For a large scale computation problem such as the wave interaction with a very large structure or a large number of bodies, the BEMs with the FMM and pFFT accelerations are discussed, respectively, including the principles of the FMM and the pFFT, and their implementations in various integral equations with different Green functions. Finally, some potential applications of the acceleration methods for problems with large scale computations in the ocean and coastal engineering are introduced.

Abstract:The fast multipole method (FMM) has been used to reduce the computing operations and memory requirements in large numerical analysis problems. In this paper, the FMM based on Taylor expansions is combined with the boundary element method (BEM) for three-dimensional elastostatic problems to solve thin plate and shell structures. The fast multipole boundary element method (FM-BEM) requires O(N) operations and memory for problems with N unknowns. The numerical results indicate that for the analysis of thin structures, the FM-BEM is much more efficient than the conventional BEM and the accuracy achieved is sufficient for engineering applications.
