Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group. If f : G -> C is a nonzero function with Fourier transform f, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle states that |supp( f)||supp((f) over cap)| >= |G|. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we present the shift bound for abelian codes with a streamlined proof. Second, we use the shifting technique to prove a generalization and a sharpening of the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. In particular, if f : G -> F is a non-zero function from G to a field F, and if f has a Fourier transform (f) over cap, the sharpened uncertainty principle states that |supp(f)|| supp((f) over cap)| >= | G|+| supp(f)|-| H(supp(f))|, where H(supp(f)) is the stabilizer of supp(f) in G.

Uncertainty Principles on Harmonic Manifolds of Rank One

Abstract:We show various uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform on harmonic manifolds of rank one. In particular, we derive a Heisenberg uncertainty principle, a Morgen theorem, an uncertainty principle for the Schrödinger equation and a version of Hömanders theorem. Furthermore, we generalise the in the Euclidean case well-known Hausdorff-Young inequality for the Fourier transform, to harmonic manifolds of rank one.

Abstract:The classical uncertainty principles deal with functions on abelian groups. In this paper, we discuss the uncertainty principles for finite index subfactors which include the cases for finite groups and finite dimensional Kac algebras. We prove the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality, the Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. We characterize the minimizers of the uncertainty principles and then we prove Hardy's uncertainty principle by using minimizers. We also prove that the minimizer is uniquely determined by the supports of itself and its Fourier transform. The proofs take the advantage of the analytic and the categorial perspectives of subfactor planar algebras. Our method to prove the uncertainty principles also works for more general cases, such as Popa's lambda-lattices, modular tensor categories, etc. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The Hardy uncertainty principle says that no function is better localized together with its Fourier transform than the Gaussian. The textbook proof of the result, as well as one of the original proofs by Hardy, refers to the Phragmén-Lindelöf theorem. In this note we first describe the connection of the Hardy uncertainty to the Schrödinger equation, and give a new proof of Hardy's result which is based on this connection and the Liouville theorem. The proof is related to the second proof of Hardy, which has been underservedly forgotten. Then we survey the recent results on dynamical versions of Hardy's theorem.

Abstract:For any finite group $G$, any finite $G$-set $X$ and any field $F$, we consider the vector space $F^X$ of all functions from $X$ to $F$. When the group algebra $FG$ is semisimple and splitting, we find a specific basis $\widehat X$ of $F^X$, construct the Fourier transform: $F^X\to F^{\widehat X}$, $f\mapsto\widehat f$, and define the rank support $\mbox{rk-supp}(\widehat f)$; we prove that $\mbox{rk-supp}(\widehat f)=\dim FGf$, where $FGf$ is the submodule of the permutation module $FX$ generated by the element $f=\sum_{x\in X}f(x)x$. Next, we extend a sharpened uncertainty principle for abelian finite groups by Feng, Hollmann, and Xiang [9] to the following extensive framework: for any field $F$, any transitive $G$-set $X$ and $0\neq f\in F^X$ we prove that $$ |{\rm supp}(f)|\cdot \dim FGf \geq |X|+|{\rm supp}(f)|-|X_{{\rm supp}(f)}|, $$ where ${\rm supp}(f)$ is the support of $f$, and $X_{{\rm supp}(f)}$ is a block of $X$ associated with the subset ${\rm supp}(f)$ such that ${\rm supp}(f)$ is a disjoint union of some translations of the block. Then many (sharpened or classical) versions of finite-dimensional uncertainty principle are derived as corollaries.

Abstract:We show how a number of well-known uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform, such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the Donoho–Stark uncertainty principle, and Meshulam’s nonabelian uncertainty principle, have little to do with the structure of the Fourier transform itself. Rather, all of these results follow from very weak properties of the Fourier transform (shared by numerous linear operators), namely that it is bounded as an operator L1→L∞L^1 \rightarrow L^\infty, and that it is unitary. Using a single, simple proof template, and only these (or weaker) properties, we obtain some new proofs and many generalizations of these basic uncertainty principles, to new operators and to new settings, in a completely unified way. Together with our general overview, this paper can also serve as a survey of the many facets of the phenomena known as uncertainty principles.

Abstract:Unlike the uncertainty relationships of two arbitrary incompatible observables represented by the product of variances in the past, representing them by the sum of variances is better as it guarantees to be nontrivial for two incompatible operators in some special cases. Although the uncertainty relation is formulated as the sum of variances for unitary operators has been confirmed, its general forms for arbitrary non-Hermitian operators have not been yet investigated in detail. Thus, this study develops four sum uncertainty relations for arbitrary non-Hermitian operators acting on system states by utilizing an appropriate Hilbert-space metric. The compatible forms of our sum inequalities with the conventional quantum mechanics are also provided via $G$-metric formalism. Concrete examples demonstrate the validity of the purposed sum uncertainty relations in both $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phases. The proposed methods and results can help the reader to understand in-depth the usefulness of $G$-metric formalism in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and the sum uncertainty relations of incompatible operators within.

Abstract:The offset linear canonical transform (OLCT) provides a more general framework for a number of well known linear integral transforms in signal processing and optics, such as Fourier transform, fractional Fourier transform, linear canonical transform. In this paper, to characterize simultaneous localization of a signal and its OLCT, we extend some different uncertainty principles (UPs), including Nazarov's UP, Hardy's UP, Beurling's UP, logarithmic UP and entropic UP, which have already been well studied in the Fourier transform domain over the last few decades, to the OLCT domain in a broader sense.

Abstract:We derive Heisenberg uncertainty principles for pairs of Linear Canonical Transforms of a given function, by resorting to the fact that these transforms are just metaplectic operators associated with free symplectic matrices. The results obtained synthesize and generalize previous results found in the literature, because they apply to all signals, in arbitrary dimension and any metaplectic operator (which includes Linear Canonical Transforms as particular cases). Moreover, we also obtain a generalization of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle for Linear Canonical Transforms. We also propose a new quadratic phase-space distribution, which represents a signal along two intermediate directions in the time-frequency plane. The marginal distributions are always non-negative and permit a simple interpretation in terms of the Radon transform. We also give a geometric interpretation of this quadratic phase-space representation as a Wigner distribution obtained upon Weyl quantization on a non-standard symplectic vector space. Finally, we derive the multidimensional version of the Hardy uncertainty principle for metaplectic operators and the Paley-Wiener theorem for Linear Canonical Transforms.

Abstract:The latest <math>N</math>-dimensional Heisenberg's uncertainty principle associated with complex-valued functions' uncertainty product in the Fourier transform domain is extended into two fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) domains. The result derived is sharper than the existing ones in the literature, giving rise to a tighter lower bound on the uncertainty product in time and <math>N</math>-dimensional FRFT domains, as well as that in two <math>N</math>-dimensional FRFT domains. Example and simulations also validate the correctness of theoretical analyses, and finally the effectiveness is illustrated by applications in the effective estimation of spreads in time–frequency analysis and optical systems analysis.

Abstract:This study is concerned with the uncertainty principles which are related to the Weyl-Heisenberg, the SIM(2) and the Affine groups. A general theorem which associates an uncertainty principle to a pair of self-adjoint operators was previously used in finding the minimizers of the uncertainty principles related to various groups, e.g., the one and two-dimensional Weyl-Heisenberg groups, the one-dimensional Affine group, and the two-dimensional similitude group of ℝ2, SIM(2) = ℝ2 ×(ℝ + × SO(2)). In this study the relationship between the affine group in two dimensions and the SIM(2) group is investigated in terms of the uncertainty minimizers. Moreover, we present scale space properties of a minimizer of the SIM(2) group.

Abstract:Hardy's uncertainty principle is a classical result in harmonic analysis, stating that a function in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and its Fourier transform cannot both decay arbitrarily fast at infinity. In this paper, we extend this principle to the propagators of Schrödinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians, known in the literature as metaplectic operators. These operators generalize the Fourier transform and have captured significant attention in recent years due to their wide-ranging applications in time-frequency analysis, quantum harmonic analysis, signal processing, and various other fields. However, the involved structure of these operators requires careful analysis, and most results obtained so far concern special propagators that can basically be reduced to rescaled Fourier transforms. The main contributions of this work are threefold: (1) we extend Hardy's uncertainty principle, covering all propagators of Schrödinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians, (2) we provide concrete examples, such as fractional Fourier transforms, which arise when considering anisotropic harmonic oscillators, (3) we suggest Gaussian decay conditions in certain directions only, which are related to the structure of the corresponding symplectic projection.

Abstract:This correspondence investigates the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and windowed uncertainty principle associated with 1D fractional Hilbert transform (FRHT) and the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle associated with two types of 2D FRHT for the first time. These uncertainty bounds are related with the transform parameters of the fractional transform. In addition, we show that the certainty bounds for the complex signals derived by FRHT are different with that of the general complex signals in most cases. The special cases of these principles in traditional domains are provided as well. These new derived uncertainty principles will enrich the ensemble of the uncertainty principle as well as providing new physical interpretation.
