Abstract:Emotions have been shown to have a significant influence on the decision-making process of human beings and, thus, play an important role in intelligent behavior. But it is the problem how Intelligent Systems obtain the abilities of emotions such as recognizing, expressing and reasoning emotions. Our viewpoint is that emotions should be developed in the activities of interaction, which occur between Intelligent System and environment. The environment can be users or other agents. To cater to this point, we propose an agent model of emotion development. The agent model is based on OCC Model and Operant Conditioning Theory. We define a set of functions based on OCC Model to search the emotional state-space graph. At the same time, we give the algorithm of Operant Conditions procedure. With User interface and Manager interface, the agent will get input of stimulus, which may be the feedback of its actions. Then through the process of Operant Conditioning functions, and generalize the emotional knowledge. After replays the procedure again and again, it will try to obtain the abilities of emotions.

Abstract:An artificial emotion model based on the Markov chain and state-space method is proposed by analyzing the diversion rule of human emotion.The diversion quotiety matrix,the attenuation and sensitivity quotiety of emotion are designed to characterize differ-ent individual,and the stability of the model is analyzed.Spontaneity transformation of emotion is discussed in detail which is com-pared with condition of control input.Simulation indicates that the emotion movement of the model is close to the emotion process of human.

Abstract:A new linguistic computing model for music emotion was proposed based on Hevner affective ring-a famous psychology model for emotion representation. Traditional study with aggregation methods does not accord with the actual process of human emotion cognition. In the proposed model, an 8-dimensional vector of linguistic labels was used to represent the emotion embodied in underlying music. Together with a method to measure the emotion similarity degree between any two pieces of music, the emotional space based on a set of basic linguistic labels was established. Finally, an experiment proved the model.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to construct a virtual assistant. Basic emotions theory points out that compound emotion consists of eight prototype basic emotions and “drives” which reflects people’s will. According to this theory, we construct a psychology model. By adjusting parameters in it, we can simulate different human psychologies. Based on this model, combining real-time facial expression and voice recognition and synthesizing technology, we construct a virtual assistant. Proved by experiment, our system obeys human emotion rules.

Abstract:In recent years, with the further breakthrough of artificial intelligence theory and technology, as well as the further expansion of the Internet scale, the recognition of human emotions and the necessity for satisfying human psychological needs in future artificial intelligence technology development tendencies have been highlighted, in addition to physical task accomplishment. Musical emotion classification is an important research topic in artificial intelligence. The key premise of realizing music emotion classification is to construct a musical emotion model that conforms to the characteristics of music emotion recognition. Currently, three types of music emotion classification models are available: discrete category, continuous dimensional, and music emotion-specific models. The pleasure-arousal music emotion fuzzy model, which includes a wide range of emotions compared with other models, is selected as the emotional classification system in this study to investigate the influencing factor for musical emotion classification. Two representative emotional attributes, i.e., speed and strength, are used as variables. Based on test experiments involving music and non-music majors combined with questionnaire results, the relationship between music properties and emotional changes under the pleasure-arousal model is revealed quantitatively.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop finite state models of emotional interactions based on homogeneous Markov chain: an emotional agent takes a state from a finite set of basic emotion --- happiness, surprise, fear, anger, disgust and sadness. And the emotional agent updates its state depending on its current state and a state of its input (also a state-emotion). We classify six basic emotions to three big classes: positive, neutral, and negative emotion. Then, we associate any two big classes to gain the results of interactions. The results of interactions are obtained by calculating the value of emotional valence and arousal. Finally, emotions poly-tropism is confirmed and the temporal length of emotional state is calculated. All these results are basing on matrix of transition probability and the features of homogeneous Markov chain by experiments.

Abstract:Emotions are a central key for understanding human beings and of fundamental importance regarding their impact in human and animal behaviors. They have been for a long time a subject of study for various scholars including in particular philosophers and mystics. In modern science, the emotional phenomenon has attracted for a few decades an increasing number of studies, notably in the fields of Psychology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. However, since our perception of emotions is not, so far, directly detectable nor recordable by our measure instruments, Physics and Mathematics have not been so far used academically to provide a precise description of the phenomenon of feeling an emotion. Relying upon the works of O. Elahi and on the hypothesis that the human soul and its psyche may manifest in ourselves (in both conscious and unconscious manner) in an analog way as electromagnetic waves, we propose here a few mathematical descriptions consistent with the human personal experience, of the feeling and cognition of emotions. As far as we know, such a mathematical description has never been provided before. It allows a quantitative (intensity) and qualitative (nature of feelings/frequency) of the emotional phenomenon which provides a novel scientific approach of the nature of the mind, complementary to the on going research of physiological manifestation of emotions. We anticipate such an approach and the associated mathematical modeling to become an important tool to describe emotions and their subsequent behavior. In complement of the modeling of oscillations and brain dynamics, it provides a fruitful direction of research with potentially broad and deep impacts in both applied mathematics, physics, cognitive and behavioral sciences.

Abstract:A robot emotional expression model based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is built to enable robots which have different personalities to response in a more satisfactory emotional level. Gross emotion regulation theory and Five Factors Model (FFM) which are the theoretical basis are firstly described. And then the importance of the personality effect on the emotion expression process is proposed, and how to make the effect quantization is discussed. After that, the algorithm of HMM is used to describe the process of emotional state transition and expression, and the performance transferring probability affected by personality is calculated. At last, the algorithm model is simulated and applied in a robot platform. The results prove that the emotional expression model can acquire humanlike expressions and improve the human-computer interaction.

Free energy model of emotional valence in dual-process perceptions

Abstract:An appropriate level of arousal induces positive emotions, and a high arousal potential may provoke negative emotions. To explain the effect of arousal on emotional valence, we propose a novel mathematical framework of arousal potential variations in the dual process of human cognition: automatic and controlled. A suitable mathematical formulation to explain the emotions in the dual process is still absent. Our model associates free energy with arousal potential and its variations to explain emotional valence. Decreasing and increasing free energy consequently induce positive and negative emotions, respectively. We formalize a transition from the automatic to the controlled process in the dual process as a change of Bayesian prior. Further, we model emotional valence using free energy increase (FI) when one tries changing one's Bayesian prior and its reduction (FR) when one succeeds in recognizing the same stimuli with a changed prior and define three emotions: "interest," "confusion," and "boredom" using the variations. The results of our mathematical analysis comparing various Gaussian model parameters reveals the following: 1) prediction error (PR) increases FR (representing "interest") when the first prior variance is greater than the second prior variance, 2) PR decreases FR when the first prior variance is less than the second prior variance, and 3) the distance between priors' means always increases FR. We also discuss the association of the outcomes with emotions in the controlled process. The proposed mathematical model provides a general framework for predicting and controlling emotional valence in the dual process that varies with viewpoint and stimuli, as well as for understanding the contradictions in the effects of arousal on the valence.

Abstract:Emotions are very important for human intelligence. For example, emotions are closely related to the appraisal of the internal bodily state and external stimuli. This helps us to respond quickly to the environment. Another important perspective in human intelligence is the role of emotions in decision-making. Moreover, the social aspect of emotions is also very important. Therefore, if the mechanism of emotions were elucidated, we could advance toward the essential understanding of our natural intelligence. In this study, a model of emotions is proposed to elucidate the mechanism of emotions through the computational model. Furthermore, from the viewpoint of partner robots, the model of emotions may help us to build robots that can have empathy for humans. To understand and sympathize with people's feelings, the robots need to have their own emotions. This may allow robots to be accepted in human society. The proposed model is implemented using deep neural networks consisting of three modules, which interact with each other. Simulation results reveal that the proposed model exhibits reasonable behavior as the basic mechanism of emotion.

Abstract:Music's affective computing model is an important research hotspot in computer music, which can be widely used in intelligent control, multimedia retrieval, human-machine interaction and entertainment robot. On the basis of analyzing the features of music' emotion connotation and its relation with basic audial elements, this paper brings forward some rules on music affective computing, and then constructs the architecture of music's emotion linguistic variable and defines the emotion based on fuzzy logic and Hevner's emotion loop. Afterwards, the paper illustrates the lens model of emotional communication and its utilization in fuzzy reasoning. Abstract:Emotion is one of the most essential and basic attributes of human intelligence. Current AI (Artificial Intelligence) research is concentrating on physical components of emotion, rarely is it carried out from the view of psychology directly(1). Study on the model of artificial psychology is the first step in the development of human-computer interaction. As affective computing remains unpredictable, creating a reasonable mental model becomes the primary task for building a hybrid system. A pragmatic mental model is also the fundament of some key topics such as recognition and synthesis of emotions. In this paper a Mental State Transition Network Model(2) is proposed to detect human emotions. By a series of psychological experiments, we present a new way to predict coming human's emotions depending on the various current emotional states under various stimuli. Besides, people in different genders and characters are taken into consideration in our investigation. According to the psychological experiments data derived from 200 questionnaires, a Mental State Transition Network Model for describing the transitions in distribution among the emotions and relationships between internal mental situations and external are concluded. Further more the coefficients of the mental transition network model were achieved. Comparing seven relative evaluating experiments, an average precision rate of 0.843 is achieved using a set of samples for the proposed model.

Abstract:Summary There have been some studies about spoken natural language dialog, and most of them have successfully been developed within the specified domains. However, current human-computer interfaces only get the data to process their programs. Aiming at developing an affective dialog system, we have been exploring how to incorporate emotional aspects of dialog into existing dialog processing techniques. As a preliminary step toward this goal, we work on making a Chinese emotion classification model which is used to recognize the main affective attribute from a sentence or a text. Finally we have done experiments to evaluate our model.

Abstract:Emotion is a unique ability possessed by human beings as advanced creatures. Emotions give people a unique physical and mental experience. Assigning emotions to computer systems is one of the latest topics in artificial intelligence research. The purpose is to allow machines to achieve natural coordination between humans and computers. This article focuses on the visual expression of emotion in the dynamic three-dimensional painting system, creating an intelligent painting system and realizing a good user experience. In this paper, the discrete method is used to qualitatively analyze emotions, and the continuous method is used to quantify basic emotions, and emotional modeling and emotional quantitative analysis are proposed to realize quantitative analysis of emotions. Combining these two methods, a comprehensive method is proposed, which uses a continuous method to quantify the basic emotions of each discrete dimension, and finally superimposes them into a comprehensive emotional synthesis model. Emotion modeling is the basis of emotion visualization. Borrowing the relationship between emotion synthesis model and visual emotion elements, this article puts forward the concept of qualitative and quantitative visual emotion elements, and expounds that the multidimensional superposition of visual emotion elements makes dynamic three-dimensional painting system emotions. The experimental results in this article show that the emotional visualization scheme of 100 samples is tested by quantitative statistical methods to demonstrate its effectiveness. Starting from 5 points of concern, the emotion visualization method discussed in this article can indeed convey or suggest a certain positive emotion (the average value of experience, transitivity, and infectiousness > 2.5, and the variance is close to 0), but we also found this recognition at the same time The degree is not high enough, and individual differences are large (mean value < 2.5, variance close to 1). This can indicate that different subjects have different feelings and evaluations of this emotional visualization. As long as the difference is within a reasonable range, this emotional visualization also has practical value, and has the ability to convey or suggest emotions.

Abstract:Emotions have been subject of research and deliberation in philosophy and psychology mainstream for a long time. In contrast, emotions have only emerged in artificial intelligence research as a serious topic in the last two decades. Year 2000, in particular, experienced a shift in attitude towards emotions and their relationship to human reasoning and human–computer interaction. This paper presents the second part of our research in this area, which aimed at interpreting psychological theories of emotions computationally and translating them into machine-implementable models. We continue with the previously selected psychological theories, namely Millenson (the psychology of emotion: theories of emotion perspective, Wiley, Hoboken, 1967) and Scherer (Soc Sci Inf 44(4):695–729, 2005), with exploration of the nature of emotional state. Fuzzy logic (FL) type-II is utilised here as a tool to capture the finer details of the psychological and computational interpretations of these theories. The paper presents a full theoretical formalism in FL type-II accompanied by implementation, using the De Montfort University Type-II Fuzzy Logic Toolbox, and detailed discussion of the complexity of the models’ computational interpretation and implementation.

Abstract:In emotion dynamic research, one distinguishes various elementary emotion dynamic features, which are studied using intensive longitudinal data. Typically, each emotion dynamic feature is quantified separately, which hampers the study of relationships between various features. Further, the length of the observed time series in emotion research is limited and often suffers from a high percentage of missing values. In this article, we propose a vector autoregressive Bayesian dynamic model that is useful for emotion dynamic research. The model encompasses 6 elementary properties of emotions and can be applied with relatively short time series, including missing data. The individual elementary properties covered are within-person variability, innovation variability, inertia, granularity, cross-lag regression, and average intensity. The model can be applied to both univariate and multivariate time series, allowing one to model the relationships between emotions. One may include external variables and non-Gaussian observed data. We illustrate the usefulness of the model on data involving 50 participants self-reporting on their experience of 3 emotions across the period of 1 week using experience sampling. Emotion-driven Piano Music Generation via Two-stage Disentanglement and Functional Representation

Abstract:Managing the emotional aspect remains a challenge in automatic music generation. Prior works aim to learn various emotions at once, leading to inadequate modeling. This paper explores the disentanglement of emotions in piano performance generation through a two-stage framework. The first stage focuses on valence modeling of lead sheet, and the second stage addresses arousal modeling by introducing performance-level attributes. To further capture features that shape valence, an aspect less explored by previous approaches, we introduce a novel functional representation of symbolic music. This representation aims to capture the emotional impact of major-minor tonality, as well as the interactions among notes, chords, and key signatures. Objective and subjective experiments validate the effectiveness of our framework in both emotional valence and arousal modeling. We further leverage our framework in a novel application of emotional controls, showing a broad potential in emotion-driven music generation.

Abstract:Most previous work in music emotion recognition assumes a single or a few song-level labels for the whole song. While it is known that different emotions can vary in intensity within a song, annotated data for this setup is scarce and difficult to obtain. In this work, we propose a method to predict emotion dynamics in song lyrics without song-level supervision. We frame each song as a time series and employ a State Space Model (SSM), combining a sentence-level emotion predictor with an Expectation-Maximization (EM) procedure to generate the full emotion dynamics. Our experiments show that applying our method consistently improves the performance of sentence-level baselines without requiring any annotated songs, making it ideal for limited training data scenarios. Further analysis through case studies shows the benefits of our method while also indicating the limitations and pointing to future directions.
