Abstract:According to the relevant domestic research,this paper summarized the latest results of domestic study on wood functional modification,including color improvement,solftening,size stabilization,strengthening,fire-retarding,rot proofing and multi-function improved treatment in the first decade of the 21st century.Looking forward to the future,we should centre on the key target of the domestic functional modification for wood in the future,strengthen the study of wood penetrability,improve the effect of chemical modification for wood,exert ourselves to study the relation between methods and results of functional modification for wood,put the prince of bionics into use,emphasize biotechnology modification and put new technologies into use.

Abstract:Wood-based materials are multifunctional green and environmentally friendly natural construction materials, and are widely used in decorative building materials. For this reason, a lot of research has been carried out to develop new and innovative wood surface improvements and make wood more appealing through features such as fire-retardancy, hydrophobicity, and antibacterial properties. To improve the performance of wood, more and more attention is being paid to the functioning of the surface. Understanding and mastering technology to improve the surface functionality of wood opens up new possibilities for developing multifunctional and high-performance materials. Examples of these techniques are ion crosslinking modification and coating modification. Researchers have been trying to make wooden surfaces more practical for the past century. This study has gradually gained popularity in the field of wood material science over the last 10 years. This paper provides an experimental reference for research on wood surface functionalization and summarizes the most current advancements in hydrophobic, antibacterial, and flame-retardant research on wood surfaces.

Abstract:The modification of wood cell walls is based on the characteristics of the chemical composition and structure of the cell wall. Various physical and chemical modifications to these characteristics enhance the original properties of the cell wall and give additional functionality. Through complex modification, wood has also obtained the opportunity to become a multifunctional material. Scholars have paid more attention to the microscopic properties of the cell wall with continuous enrichment of modification methods and improvement of modification mechanisms. This article summarizes the methods of cell wall modification in recent years and proposes prospects for future development: (1) innovation of modifiers and combination with modification mechanism, as well as improvement of cell wall permeability; (2) the application directions of cell wall structures; and (3) the application of nano-technologies in cell wall modification. This review provides further ideas and technologies for wood modifications.

Abstract:Wood-plastic composite material not only has the unique texture of logs but also has lots of excellent performance,such as good dimensional stability,water resistance,wear resistance,excellent chemical corrosion resistance,not afraid of insects,easy coloring,low maintenance requirements,long service life,easy molding,secondary processing and so on.It is one of the new focuses of green environmental protection materials which will be developed in 21~st century.The application and research of wood-plastic composites were summarized in this paper.The main problems about the research of wood-plastic composites were analyzed.The research progress on the material physical modification,chemistry modification and composites modification of wood-plastic composites at home and abroad were also discussed.Suggestions for the development direction of wood-plastic composites materials were put forward.

Abstract:Recent research progress at home and abroad in poly(vinyl chloride)/wood flour(PVC/WF) composites was reviewed.The new equipments and techniques,including planetary roller twin-screw extruders,conical twin-screw extruders with a dry device,and WoodTruderTM extrusion systems in which WF was conveyed to extruders without predrying and preblending were introduced.The research advance on additives used in PVC/WF composites such as lubricants,impactmodifiers,plasticizers,and compatibilizers was summarized.Technologies related to microcellular foaming and environment protecting were introduced and evaluated.Finally,development trend of PVC/WF composite was expected.

Abstract:The public's requirements for a high-quality residential environment and the general improvement in ecological safety awareness have made renewable resource wood and products more favored by furniture, construction and other industries. However, on the one hand, the supply of natural forests is extremely limited, and on the other hand, the materials of artificial forests have defects such as low surface strength and poor dimensional stability due to a loose fiber structure, which restricts their promotion as an alternative to high-quality wood. In this paper, based on the mechanism of wood reinforcement, several reinforcement techniques, such as impregnation, compaction and surface modification, which are widely used in industry, are briefly introduced. On this basis, the possibility of impregnation as a pretreatment method, surface modification and densification to enhance wood was prospected. It is expected to provide reference for improving the added value of plantation wood and alleviating the contradiction between wood supply and demand.

Abstract:Due to millions of years of natural evolution, wood has a unique structure that has inspired many researchers to use it as a template to create bio-based advanced materials for various applications. Apart from being a renewable and sustainable source of energy and materials, such as pulp and paper, the wood structure can be functionalized through different methodologies to be applied as advanced materials for water filtration and purification, structural engineering, energy storage, and energy-efficient buildings. The renewable aspect is an intrinsic advantage to wood-based advanced materials; however, this is not the only attribute necessary for the commercial development of novel materials: their properties must reach the minimum requirements of the target applications. In this review, the properties of functionalized wood materials are compared with those of other conventional and emerging synthetic materials, and their potential in various applications as advanced materials is analyzed. Furthermore, challenges with sustainability, feasibility, and preparation of functionalized wood are discussed, suggesting a need for the future development of these novel bio-based advanced materials.

Abstract:Wood is an abundant, intrinsically renewable natural resource, with over three trillion mature trees on Earth that serve as an important carbon sink during growth. These features when combined with new technologies and processing techniques have endowed wood with rich, emerging functionality that make it a natural material choice toward sustainability. Around 300 million years of tree evolution has yielded over 60 000 woody species, each of which is an engineering masterpiece of nature. Evolution has led to wood's unique hierarchically porous structure, with cell walls primarily composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which can support trees 300 feet tall while also providing efficient water and nutrient transport. This lignocellulosic structure offers an intriguing material platform for diverse functionalization and applications. Recent research breakthroughs around the world epitomize the tremendous yet largely unexplored potential of such advanced wood-based functional materials—a paradigm shift from the conventional use of wood in furniture and building construction. Many efforts have been dedicated to tailoring wood's composition and structure at multiple length scales to impart new functionality and synthesize novel bio-based functional composites, which are explored in this special issue of <i>Advanced Materials</i>.

Abstract:Abstract As a green material, wood is widely used in building decoration, railway construction, and other fields. However, the wood itself has inherent defects of being easy to absorb water and deform, rot, and decrease in strength. The physical and mechanical strengths and stability of artificial fast-growing forest wood are even worse. As wood modification can improve the dimensional stability, durability, strength, and other properties of wood, it has been widely used. Chemical modification is the main method of wood modification. The development of nanotechnology has brought more possibilities for wood modification. Owing to the extensive literature available, this article summarizes the representative achievements of wood chemical modification and nanotechnology. The principle, production process, advantages, and disadvantages of various wood chemical modification methods were analyzed, compared, and evaluated. Finally, according to the application status of wood-modified materials, the problems existing in the current wood chemical modification methods and the application of nanotechnology, and the development trend in the future are analyzed.

Abstract:As a renewable resource,application of cork is different from wood due to its unique properties.Based on the introduction of basic properties of cork,this paper reviewed the cork of Quercus suber from the aspects of formation,microstructure,and ultrastructure.Main chemical constituents of the cell wall,such as suberin,lignin and polysaccharide were discussed.Research status and the main problems needed to be solved in mechanical properties were analyzed.Direct utility of cork and cork composite were summarized.The purpose of this paper was to provide references for the in-depth study and high added value utilization for cork in China.

Abstract:Because of its environment adaptability, rapid growth, straight trunk and high percentage yield, poplar is widely cultivated and becomes one of the three species of fast-growing plantation in China, but it also has some troublesome inherent properties like low density, low natural durability, and poor strength properties which limit its end-use. Consequently, it is significant to improve poplar wood’s performance, expand application fields, enhance added value and realize efficient utilization of poplar by modification such as compressive densification, low molecular resin impregnation and so on. This will ultimately have a significant impact on alleviating the shortage of natural forest resources. The current research progress on reinforcing modification of fast-growing plantation poplar were summarized, meanwhile, some existing problems and future research direction were discussed, which might provide references to further study and its industrial application.

Abstract:The complex structure of wood, one of the most abundant biomaterials on Earth, has been optimized over 270 million years of tree evolution. This optimization has led to the highly efficient water and nutrient transport, mechanical stability and durability of wood. The unique material structure and pronounced anisotropy of wood endows it with an array of remarkable properties, yielding opportunities for the design of functional materials. In this Review, we provide a materials and structural perspective on how wood can be redesigned via structural engineering, chemical and/or thermal modification to alter its mechanical, fluidic, ionic, optical and thermal properties. These modifications enable a diverse range of applications, including the development of high-performance structural materials, energy storage and conversion, environmental remediation, nanoionics, nanofluidics, and light and thermal management. We also highlight advanced characterization and computational-simulation approaches for understanding the structure–property–function relationships of natural and modified wood, as well as informing bio-inspired synthetic designs. In addition, we provide our perspective on the future directions of wood research and the challenges and opportunities for industrialization.

Abstract:Wood modification is now widely recognized as offering enhanced properties of wood and overcoming issues such as dimensional instability and biodegradability which affect natural wood. Typical wood modification systems use chemical modification, impregnation modification or thermal modification, and these vary in the properties achieved. As control and understanding of the wood modification systems has progressed, further opportunities have arisen to add extra functionalities to the modified wood. These include UV stabilisation, fire retardancy, or enhanced suitability for paints and coatings. Thus, wood may become a multi-functional material through a series of modifications, treatments or reactions, to create a high-performance material with previously impossible properties. In this paper we review systems that combine the well-established wood modification procedures with secondary techniques or modifications to deliver emerging technologies with multi-functionality. The new applications targeted using this additional functionality are diverse and range from increased electrical conductivity, creation of sensors or responsive materials, improvement of wellbeing in the built environment, and enhanced fire and flame protection. We identified two parallel and connected themes: (1) the functionalisation of modified timber and (2) the modification of timber to provide (multi)-functionality. A wide range of nanotechnology concepts have been harnessed by this new generation of wood modifications and wood treatments. As this field is rapidly expanding, we also include within the review trends from current research in order to gauge the state of the art, and likely direction of travel of the industry.

Abstract:High temperature heat treatment is one of the main technologies with the highest market conversion rate and broad future prospects in the functional technology of wood. Chemical reagents are not added in the production process. The treatment improves the dimensional stability, biological durability, wood color, and acoustic properties without reducing the environmental performance of the product. However, there are some problems in heat treatment, such as the reduction of mechanical properties and surface wettability of wood, high production energy consumption, and large exhaust emissions. Therefore, understanding the influence and mechanism of high temperature heat treatment technology on wood properties is of guiding significance to further improve the quality of heat-treated wood, improve production process, and develop new equipment. This article reviews the effects of heat treatment on the properties of wood and the mechanism of heat treatment. Then, some applications of heat treatment of wood are introduced. Finally, the development direction and prospect of high temperature heat treatment technology in the future are forecasted.
