Abstract:The shape of piston rings determines the oil film distribution in lubriation,and has an important impact on the friction,lubrication and wear of the ping ring-liner system.The inverse method was introduced into the optimum design of piston ring shape.The shape of piston rings was represented using the polynomial function.Based on the load analysis of piston ring,the sequential quadratic programming algorithm was used to inversely solve the coefficient of the polynomial function.The minimizing of the fricion parameter between the piston ring and liner was considered during the solving process to obtain an optimum shape of the piston ring.The results show that the optimized high degree of ring shape can lead to reduced friction.
Coupled Evolution of Piston Asperity and Cylinder Bore Contour of Piston/cylinder Pair in Axial Piston Pump

Abstract:The wear condition of the piston/cylinder pair is crucial to the performance and reliabil-ity of the axial piston pump.The hard piston surface,the soft cylinder bore surface,and the inter-face oil film affects each other during the wear process.Specifically,in the mixed lubrication region,the geometry of the hard piston surface asperity directly affects the wear of soft cylinder bore sur-face,while the asperities may deform or even degrade when penetrating and sliding against the cylinder bore.So far,there is no suitable method to simulate their coupled evolution.This paper proposed a wear process simulation model considering the real-time interaction between the elasto-plastic deformation of the piston surface asperity,the wear contour of the cylinder bore,and the lubrication condition of the interface.An offline library of the elasto-plastic constitutive behavior of the asperity based on the finite element method(FEM)is established as a part of the simulation model to precisely analyze the deformation and degradation of the asperity and quickly invoke them in the numerical wear process simulation.The simulation and experimental results show that the piston asperity and the cylinder bore contour converge to a steady state after running-in for about 0.5 h.The distribution of the simulated asperity degradation and wear depth is also verified by the experiment.
Finite Element Analysis of Reciprocating Sealing Component of Radial Single-piston Pump

Abstract:ANSYS was utilized to establish the two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model of O-ring used as reciprocating seal of radial single-piston pump.The deformation and stress of the rubber sealing O-ring in different compression and oil pressure were analyzed.The changes of maximum Von Mises stress,maximum contact pressure and maximum shear stress under different conditions were obtained.The results show that with the increase of compression and oil pressure,the three kinds of stresses above are all increased accordingly;the maximum contact pressure between two contact surfaces is in a symmetrical distribution,the other two kinds of maximum pressures are distributing near the vicinity of trench mouth.The conclusions can be used as the reference of future design and selection of rubber sealing O-ring.The analysis method involved in dealing with rubber nonlinear problem can be extended to the analysis and calculation of other types of rubber seals.

Abstract:Purpose - This study aims at proposing an approach for optimizing the shape of the top piston ring face for minimum friction force using an inverse method. The shape of the top piston ring face determines the amount of oil distribution in the interface of the ring and liner. Therefore, the shape has a significant impact on the tribological performance of this interface.Design/methodology/approach - The shape of the ring face is represented by a polynomial function and is based on the load analysis of the ring. The optimization of the shape was performed using the Sequential Quadratic Programming method. The minimizing of the friction parameter at the interface was considered during the solving process to obtain an optimum ring shape.Findings - The optimized high degree of the shape of the ring face could lead to a reduced friction parameter. The proposed method could be applied for the tribological design and optimization of the piston rings.Research limitations/implications - There still need effort to investigate the effect of design parameters (e.g. property of lubricant) on the optimization of the ring face.Originality/value - The subject matter is important and the method has practical value.

Abstract:Under the global efforts to implement strict emission regulations, higher requirements are placed on diesel engines, and a reasonable piston ring set structure can effectively reduce diesel engine lubricating oil consumption. Taking an off-road high-pressure common rail diesel engine as the research object, the numerical simulation model of piston ring assembly dynamics was built by measuring the cylinder pressure and the temperature field of the piston and cylinder liner and combined with the test results of the gas blow-by and lubricating oil consumption. The influence of piston ring assembly structure parameters on lubricating oil consumption was systematically studied, and the mathematical regression model of lubricating oil consumption was established by using the response surface method. Based on it, the optimal solution of the piston ring assembly parameters was obtained by desirability optimization. The results show that the thickness of oil ring scraping edge will have the greatest influence on lubricating oil consumption and the lowest significance of the thickness of second ring scraping edge. With the increase of the upper end reduction of the top ring and the thickness of the oil ring scraping edge, the lubricating oil consumption gradually decreases. The optimal solution with the desirability of 1 is 0.02 mm reduction of the upper end of the top ring, 0.40 mm thickness of the oil ring scraping edge and 0 mm thickness of the second ring scraping edge. And the lubricating oil consumption is 3.07 g/h, which is 15.89% less than that of the original machine.

Abstract:Influences of hard particles lying in the lubrication region between piston ring face and cylinder wall, including the effects of a non-contact particle and contact particle, on tribological performances of the piston ringwere numerically analysed. A modified Reynolds equation incorporating a non-contact particle effect was presented. The total friction force, deformation, and contact stress of the ring, with a non-contact particle and contact particle consideration, were solved separately by using finite-element program code of the authors and software ANSYS 5.7. The numerical results show that obvious changes in the total friction force and deformation of the ring can occur, if the diameter and height across the film thickness of a non-contact particle and axial velocity difference between the non-contact particle and ring are considered. The maximum contact stress of the ring is obviously affected by the contact particle's interfering time and velocity, and hardness value of the plastically deformed particle.

Abstract:The piston/cylinder pair is the critical lubricating interface of axial piston pumps. It suffers from excessive wear, especially under high output pressure. The performance degradation of the piston/cylinder pair is significant to be clarified. In this paper, a wear prediction method of the piston/cylinder pair is established by coupling the load-bearing and lubrication parameters calculation model and the wear calculation model. The models are validated through experiments. The experimental and simulated results show that the wear of two ends of the cylinder bore is severe in the specific ranges of circumferential angle. The time-varying wear process of the piston/cylinder pair can be obtained by using this method; therefore, the maintenance time can be predicted.

Abstract:Numerical models for barrel-shaped rings with four textures were established using MATLAB and the corresponding specimens were fabricated by laser surface texturing. The performance was compared both theoretically and experimentally in order to investigate the effects of geometrical characteristics. The results of the theoretical analysis indicated that a microdimple texture on both sides of the ring surface was a suitable option to improve the lubricating property due to the "collective'' effect, thus reducing friction of the piston ring. This result was confirmed experimentally. The microdimple texture at the crowning of the ring face weakened the hydrodynamic pressure effect and increased friction, as demonstrated by both theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive lubrication model for piston skirt-liner system of internal combustion engines. In the model it is included that the effects of the surface roughness, the piston skirt surface geometry, the piston pin offset, the crankshaft offset, and the lubricant viscosity on the piston secondary motion and lubrication performance. Especially, the effects of the thermal and the elastic deformation of the piston skirt and the cylinder liner, and the piston skirt deformations due to the combustion pressure and the piston axial inertia, are considered as the key task in this study. The results show that the combustion force, the working temperature and the piston axial inertia all play important roles in the piston-skirt lubrication. Also, considering the elastic deformation of the piston skirt and the cylinder liner is beneficial to the prediction of piston-skirt lubrication more accurately. The developed program in this study can provide a useful tool for the analysis of the piston-liner system lubrication problem.

Abstract:As key friction pairs affecting the whole engine reliability, the piston-ring-liner system generates more than 45% of the whole engine friction loss. But so far, three-dimensional tribo-dynamic models considering its complex motions are very limited. This paper proposes a new method from the perspective of multi-flexible-body dynamics to realize a fully coupled modeling of the system’s deformation, dynamics, and lubrication characteristics. The study considers the ring-groove contact characteristics and calculates the system boundary loads through the blow-by model. The effect mechanism of ring groove deformation on ring properties is revealed, and the system’s complex tribo-dynamic behaviors such as twisting and fluttering are characterized. After fully coupled modeling, piston deformation at the ring groove position can be 65.80 µm, resulting in a 1.33 µm reduction in the minimum oil film thickness compared to the uncoupled model, and ring wear unevenness is aggravated.

Abstract:The two dimensional average Reynolds equation and Greenwood-Tripp model are applied to examine the problem of mixed lubrication and dynamic wear. Studied are the tribology of system for cylinder-piston ring and the effect of surface roughness. Parameters governing the operation of EQ6100 engine are analyzed. The friction loss power of tribo-pairs of cylinder-piston ring in EQ6100 engine is calculated and the influencing factors of friction power loss are also discussed. It is found that the tribo-paris of cylinder-piston ring works under mixed lubrication condition.

Abstract:To reduce the friction of a piston ring while maintaining a large oil film load-carrying capacity, an approach comprising of the inverse method and the sequential quadratic programming algorithm was proposed. The approach considers the variation of mixed lubrication and variable lubricant viscosity with temperature along the engine stroke, is developed to optimize the profile of a piston ring. A piston ring profile is represented by a polynomial function. A case study of the second piston ring shows that the proposed method can be applied for the optimization of a piston ring profile. In addition, this paper illustrates the effects of the degree of a polynomial function. The results show that the minimization of friction and maximization of oil film load-carrying capacity can be balanced simultaneously when the degree of the polynomial is 2 and 5.

Abstract:The cylinder liner-piston system of internal combustion engines is one of the key friction pairs running at the most rigor working conditions. Under the influence of elastohydrodynamic lubrication and contact between the piston skirt and the liner, the dynamic process of piston is a nonlinear and stiff problem difficult to be analyzed accurately and easily. To reach a stable and rapid convergence in analysis, the MEBDF method and the multigrid method are used to solve the piston-skirt elastohydrodynamic lubrication and contact problem. Firstly the solving process of the piston dynamics is analyzed based on the MEBDF method. Then the residual equations for the elastohydrodynamic lubrication pressure are built based on the multigrid method. And the solving method of the nonlinear residual equations is presented based on the quasi Newton-Raphson method. Finally the numerical simulation program is developed based on the MEBDF method and the multigrid method. The elastohydrodynamic lubrication and contact problem of the piston skirt-liner system is simply analyzed based on the simulation. The study in this paper can provide an effective method for tribological analysis and optimization of piston-liner system in the future.

Abstract:The factors which affect the running in process of the piston ring and cylinder line have been studied in details based upon a mathematical model previons work. These factors include the load and revolving velocity of the engine, the surface roughness of the piston ring and the cylinder line and the lubricant viscosity. The tribological design method of the running in process has also been discussed. The method of optimization has been used in order to find the best profile geometry of the piston ring face and the best assign of the load and revolving velocity of the engine during the running in process. The calculation shows that the unsymmetrical cross section profile of the piston ring can increase the oil film thickness between the piston ring and cylinder line, and the reasonable assignment of the load and rotate speed of engine can also cut down the running in process.

Abstract:This paper conducts numerical calculations of the lubricating condition in the piston ring/liner system of a compressor. The effects of dynamic and tribological mechanism on the process of formation of piston ring profiles are discussed. One type of the profiles is suggested which benefits lubrication and reduces oil consumption. In terms of the mechanism discussed a designed profile of rings can be automatically formed and maintained in the operation of compressors through hardening of the local surface of the rings.

Abstract:A mixed lubrication model was established for piston skirt lubrication. The mathematical model developed in this paper incorporates governing equations of motion with average Reynolds equation. This model considers the surface roughness and profile. The corresponding computer program can be used to calculate oscillatory motion of piston during the entire trajectory, which has the excellent convergence. In addition, a set of equipment, which adopt the laser induced fluorescent method, was developed to measure the oil film thickness between the piston and the bore.

Abstract:By synergetic use of numerical and experimental methods the characteristic of flow-by and lubricating oil consumption(LOC) of one diesel engine was analyzed in order to reduce the engine LOC and provide the improved solution.The predicting model on piston ring package dynamic and LOC was established and calibrated by test data.It shows that the results of inter-ring pressure and axial ring motion can be used to determine the reason that cause either an increase or decrease of LOC and guide improvement design work.In addition,the effects of the clearance between piston land and liner surface on LOC was investigated,and the piston profile and first ring were modified.The test shows that LOC changed significantly after modified,and it has good consistency between simulation results and experimental results.

Abstract:More detailed and accurate modeling is very important for analyzing and optimizing the tribological performance of the piston-ring-cylinder liner system. However, due to the difficulty of modeling and solving, theoretical studies on the three-dimensional (3D) tribodynamics of piston rings are limited. The tribodynamic model which couples the dynamics, mixed lubrication, and blow-by of piston-ring pack assemblies has not been found yet. Therefore, in this study, a 3D tribodynamic model of the piston-ring pack is developed considering the influence of piston secondary motion and the interaction forces and moments between piston ring and cylinder liner as well as between piston ring and ring groove. In addition to the ring end gaps, the influence of ring dynamics is also contained in the blow-by model. Coupled with gas flows and piston rotation, ring motions in the ring groove are investigated. It is found that ring dynamics has significant effects on the tribological performance, the axial reversing movement of piston ring is the main cause of gas pressure oscillation, piston motion has an obvious influence on the ring dynamics, the interaction forces and moments between piston and rings increase the secondary motion amplitude of piston, especially near the fire top dead center.
A Piston Tribodynamic Model with Deterministic Consideration of Skirt Surface Grooves

Abstract:The machining micro-grooves on the piston skirt surface are very common in internal combustion engines. To accurately investigate the influence of the grooves on piston tribodynamic performance, a coupling model of piston skirt-liner lubrication and crank-rod-piston multibody dynamics is built in this study. The lubrication model is solved by the Finite Element Method with deterministic treatment of the grooves. The multibody dynamics equations are formulated with Lagrange multipliers and constraint Jacobian matrix in the form of Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs). The MEBDF approach is applied to a high efficient time integration of the DAEs. Based on the above model, the influences of grooves and some groove parameters on piston skirt liner lubrication as well as piston slap are studied and revealed.
Numerical Analysis of Textured Piston Compression Ring Conjunction Using Two-Dimensional-computational Fluid Dynamics and Reynolds Methods

Abstract:The Reynolds equation, in which some items have been omitted, is a simplified form of the Navier–Stokes equations. When surface texturing exists, it may unreasonably reveal the tribological effects in some cases. In this paper, both the two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics method, which is based on the Navier–Stokes equations, and the corresponding one-dimensional Reynolds method are adopted to analyze the performance of the textured piston compression ring conjunction. To conduct a comparison between these two methods, the modified Elrod algorithm for Jakobsson–Floberg–Olsson cavitation model is chosen to solve the Reynolds equation. The results show that the Reynolds method is somewhat different from the computational fluid dynamics method in the minimum oil film thickness, pressure distribution, and cavitation at given operating conditions. Moreover, for a low ratio of texture depth to length, the Reynolds equation is still suitable to predict the overall effects of the designed groove textures. The simulation results also reveal that it is not always beneficial for the tribological performance and sometimes may increase the total friction force when the ring is textured.
