Abstract:The suitability of applying the overlapping grid method to parallel computation of steady and unsteady compressible inviscid flows with three-point block-tridiagonal implicit schemes is addressed in this paper. An easily usable interface treatment is constructed and analyzed for both steady and unsteady problems. The performance of the method, such as convergence rate and time accuracy, can be controlled through the overlapping width. The method needs no iteration at each time step or modification of the Thomas algorithm for the solution of the implicit parts. In both steady and unsteady cases a very good absolute parallel efficiency is demonstrated for bidimensional subsonic and transonic flow computations.
Flow Computations of Multi-Stages by URANS and Flux Balanced Mixing Models

Abstract:The quasi-steady methods based on mixing models have been widely applied to flow computations of turbomachinery multistages in aerospace engineering. Meanwhile, the unsteady numerical simulation has also been used due to its ability in obtaining time-dependent flow solutions. In the paper, two different mixing treatments and the corresponding flux balanced ones are presented to exchange the flow solutions on the interfaces between adjacent blade rows. The four mixing treatments are then used for flow computations of a subsonic 1.5-stage axial turbine and a quasi-1.5-stage transonic compressor rotor. The results are compared with those by unsteady numerical method, which is implemented by using the sliding mesh technique. The effects of the quasi-steady and unsteady computation methods on the conservation of flow solutions across the interfaces are presented and addressed. Furthermore, the influence of mixing treatments on shock wave and flow separation of the transonic compressor rotor is presented in detail. All the results demonstrate that the flux balanced mixing treatments can be used for multi-stage flow computations with improved performance on interface conservation, even in the complex flows.
A Computational Strategy for Nonlinear Coupled Constitutive Relations of Rarefied Nonequilibrium Flows on Unstructured Grids

Abstract:The Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) equations are no longer valid in high-Knudsen and high-Mach flows, where the local thermodynamically equilibrium assumption fails, while the nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR) have been proven to be an efficient approach for rarefied non-equilibrium flows under the structured finite-volume-method computational fluid dynamic (FVM-CFD) solver. In this paper, by adding the time derivatives of non-conserved variables to the NCCR model, a computational strategy for NCCR model under the unstructured FVM-CFD framework is first proposed for further engineering applications. An upwind flux-splitting scheme with the Lower-Upper Symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) implicit time-marching scheme is employed. The linear stability of one-dimensional modified NCCR model in time and space is analyzed subsequently, which indicates the modified NCCR model is unconditionally stable. The accuracy and computational performance of the proposed NCCR solution are assessed by a feat of the numerical tests for hypersonic flow over a blunt cylinder without a wake, supersonic flow past a circular cylinder with a wake, and hypersonic flow around a planetary probe. Computational results show that the newly-developed NCCR solution can get solutions in better agreement with the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) than NSF results. Moreover, the newly-developed NCCR solution has a better property of convergence than the undecomposed NCCR algorithm under the unstructured FVM-CFD framework. These superior advantages of the present computational strategy are expected to make the NCCR method a promising engineering tool for modeling rarefied non-equilibrium flows.

Abstract:Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this paper, we identify some of the weak spots of the two-level scheme and propose remedies such as a different domain partitioning and recursive application of the method. We apply the method to the well-known 3D lid-driven cavity benchmark problem, and demonstrate its superior robustness by comparing with a segregated SIMPLE-type preconditioner.

Conservative overlapping grid generation in supersonic viscous flow over complex geometry

Abstract:In this paper, a three-dimensional conservative interface algorithm of overlapping grids in simulating supersonic flow about complex geometry is presented. The conservative algorithm contains the conservative interpolation and characteristics decomposition of numerical flux. Based on the algorithm, a procedure, COGRID, has been developed and a three-dimensional implicit flow solver with second-order TVD algorithm is developed to predicate the flow field. To verify the conservative interface algorithm, the case of supersonic flow around a cylinder is tackled. Application of the conservative algorithm in simulating flow about complex geometry is validated by computations of a case of the wing-body combination. Results show that with the conservative algorithm, a good agreement can be obtained by comparisons with the experimental data, and the conservative algorithm possess better capability in predicating the complex flow field than a non-conservative algorithm.
An overlapping grid adaptive interface advancement method for hypersonic continuum-rarefied flow and its application

Abstract:When the hypersonic aircraft flies in the transitional regime,both continuum and rarefied flows appear in the flow field around the aircraft.A multi-scale adaptive advanced overset grid method is proposed to deal with such a flow problem.The whole flow field is covered by the structured and unstructured grids which are independently generated in different scales.The a-daptive hole cutting process is advanced by the cut-off value of the interface breakdown function of the continuum and rarefied flows in the structured grid.When the hole cutting process is com-pleted,the rarefied regions are computed using the unstructured DSMC method while the contin-uum regions are computed using the structured CFD method based on the N-S equations.To cou-ple the two algorithms,the flow information at the boundary between the continuum and rarefied regions is interpolated,exchanged and processed.According to the instantaneous solution of the coupled flow field,the overlapping parts of the different grids are advanced by the interface breakdown function.The feasibility and effectiveness of the present method are validated by the simulation results of the supersonic flow across a cylinder and hypersonic flow across a hollow cylinder-flare.

Abstract:The implicit solving approach of steady transonic flow field equals a Newton iteration for a nonlinear equation system.Globalization of Newton iteration is usually necessary in practice in order to fulfill the convergence requirement.In the framework of homogenous continuation,a Laplace operator based function continuation method which accelerates convergence of implicit solving of steady flow field is proposed.Considering that the steady flow field is usually initialized as uniform freestream condition,the Laplace operator is employed to speed up information propagation from wall boundary to internal flow field due to its ellipticity and to improve regularity of the problem due to its linearity and symmetric positive definite property.Thus the stability of Newton's method is improved then larger CFL number could be employed and finally the flow field solving efficiency is improved.Due to the complexity and nonlinearity of the flow field problem,a priori optimal nonlinear solving strategy is impossible to be obtained through theoretical analysis.Thus,the effect of Laplacian coefficient on convergence efficiency is investigated through numerical experiments on inviscid NACA0012 airfoil,turbulent RAE2822 airfoil and ONERA M6 3D wing test cases.Generally pragmatic combination of iteration parameters are also given and the proposed method is proved to gain over 20％ saving in CPU computing time compared with the classic pseudo time marching method under transonic condition.
Parallel Computation of Compressible Flows for Implicit Schemes Without Sub-iteration and Modification of the Implicit Solver

Abstract:Parallel computation for fluid flow problems has become very useful in the end of the last century and will certainly be very popular in the 21st century for handling large scale problems. Implicit schemes are efficient for obtaining steady state solutions and for treating slowly unsteady flows. However, implicit schemes are not inherently parallel and their parallelization usually requires addtional iteration or modification of the implicit solvers. Thus the parallelization of implicit schemes is accessible only to experts specialized in parallization. In [9, 12], a parallel method based on grid overlapping was proposed for inviscid flow computation. This method requires no additional iterations at each time step, and nor modification of the implicit solver. In this paper we analyze and use this method for viscous flow computation. We conclude that optimal parallel efficiency corresponds to an overlapping width determined by CFL,and the results are similar to inviscid problems for a sufficiently large mesh Reynolds number.

Abstract:The uniqueness of continuous and discontinuous steady-state solutions is studied for difference approximations of hyperbolic problems on a strip with overlapping grids. In the continuous case, an easily verifiable uniqueness criterion is obtained from a normal mode analysis. This criterion is applied to examine the uniqueness of commonly used interface treatments. In the discontinuous case, a shock is assumed to be contained in the overlap. Analysis for this case is developed on a linear model equation. Most of the results are further confirmed by computing smooth and shocked flows in a divergent duct. The present theory can also be applied to analyze uniqueness for more general boundary value problems.

Abstract:We propose efficient and accurate techniques for simulating a time-periodic, unsteady rotorcraft flow. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved on overlapping grids using a multigrid method and time spectral method. A new implementation of the multigrid algorithm for overlapping grids is proposed to accelerate hovering and forward-flight computations. Using the time-lagged periodic boundary condition, the time spectral method is combined with the multigrid scheme to significantly improve the simulation efficiency of a helicopter rotor in forward flight. The resulting equations are solved by the implicit lower-upper symmetric-Gauss-Seidel scheme. Some hovering and forward-flight cases are simulated, and the results are compared with experimental data, demonstrating the high efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:The composite grid methods considered in this paper refer to overlapping grid methods and adaptive Cartesian grid method. This paper reviews some recent work concerning the theoretical aspects, such as stability, accuracy, convergence, uniqueness, and conservation, of composite grid methods used in Computational Fluid Dynamics, in order to clarify some hotly debated questions. The most important point to be remarked is that, for composite overlapping grid method, only a nonconservative treatment can stably lead to conservative results. Another important result is that, the adaptive Cartesian grid method is as stable and accurate as the conventional smoothly refined curvilinear grid method, provided they are based on the same difference approximations and that the ratio between the finest mesh and the coarsest mesh is the same.

Abstract:The linear Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) constitutive relations are derived on the assumption of the small deviation from local thermodynamic equilibrium, and consequently they may fail in describing flows removed far from local equilibrium, like rarefied hypersonic flows. In this paper, a nonlinear constitutive model of diatomic gases named as "nonlinear coupled constitutive relations" (NCCR) is presented. The model conceptually starts from Eu's generalized hydrodynamics and is developed for simulating rarefied hypersonic gas flows with a goal of recovering NSF's solutions in near-continuum regime and more accurate in transition regime. To enhance stable computation, an undecomposed algorithm is further developed for the nonlinear constitutive model within finite volume framework. An analysis is carried out to compare the algorithm with Myong's original decomposed algorithm. Local nonequilibrium flow regions are also investigated for rarefied hypersonic flows over a cone tip, a hollow cylinder-flare, and a hypersonic technology vehicle-type flying vehicle. The convergent solutions of NCCR model are compared with NSF, direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) calculations, and experimental data. It is demonstrated from results of general flow-field and surface properties that the NCCR model is as computationally efficient as the NSF model in continuum regime, and, at the same time, more accurate in comparison with DSMC and experimental data than NSF in nonequilibrium flows.
Grid Convergence Study on a Finite Volume Code NSAWET

Abstract:A grid convergence study using the in-house finite volume flow solver NSAWET is presented. Solutions of three two-dimensional flow problems including the isentropic vortex advection, the inviscid flow around NACA0012 airfoil and the turbulent flow over flat plate are compared with theoretical or other numerical data. All the flow conditions, geometries and meshes are obtained from well-recognized public database in order to ensure a fair and effective comparison. The generalized Richardson extrapolation method is adopted for error estimation. Using the Roe’s scheme in NSAWET, results show excellent asymptotic features and formally second-order accuracy. Shock may deteriorate the prediction accuracy of pressure drag due to the order reduction of reconstruction near discontinuity. The so-called hyper-convergence for transonic nonlifting case, where an accuracy much higher than firstorder is observed, may originate from the constant-lift computation. The possible consequences are raised for similar grid convergence studies. Then a process successively composed of verifications on basic numerical properties, pressure drag prediction and friction drag prediction is suggested.

Abstract:In Computational Fluid Dynamics, it is very often to use a composite grid for various purposes including easy meshing of a complex geometry, parallel computing, local mesh refinement, or treating different flows with different physical models, and using different numerical methods. All these methods have a common feature: they have internal artificial interfaces at which one needs to define interface conditions. In this paper, we first give a review on the current status of this subject with emphasis on compressible flows. Then two problems will be discussed in details. The first is for the overlapping grid approach due to its wide popularity for treating complex geometry and for parallel computing. The second is concerned with continuum/DSMC matching since this is a hot topic of current interest. A two dimensional computation is also performed to study the transmission of a shock wave across an overlapping grid interface.

Abstract:An efficient algorithm is described for calculating stationary one-dimensional transonic outflow solutions of the compressible Euler equations with gravity and heat source terms. The stationary equations are solved directly by exploiting their dynamical system form. Transonic expansions are the stable manifolds of saddle-point-type critical points, and can be obtained efficiently and accurately by adaptive integration outward from the critical points. The particular transonic solution and critical point that match the inflow boundary conditions are obtained by a two-by-two Newton iteration which allows the critical point to vary within the manifold of possible critical points. The proposed Newton Critical Point (NCP) method typically converges in a small number of Newton steps, and the adaptively calculated solution trajectories are highly accurate. A sample application area for this method is the calculation of transonic hydrodynamic escape flows from extrasolar planets and the early Earth. The method is also illustrated for an example flow problem that models accretion onto a black hole with a shock.

Abstract:In this paper, a new numerical procedure is proposed for the steady flow of a viscous, incompressible fluid based on SIMPLER algorithm on a non-orthogonal non-staggered grid, together with Cartesian velocity components as dependent variables in the momentum equations. The main feature of the algorithm is that the pressure and pressure correction equations are obtained by explicitly treating pressure cross-derivatives terms in interface contravariant velocities. A collocated arrangement of variables is introduced on numerical grids, and the cell face velocities are calculated by the momentum interpolation. It is proved that this algorithm can be effectively used to simulate fluid flow and heat transfer in complex geometry, by the validation calculation of flow inside branching channel.
Nonet-Cartesian Grid Method for Shock Flow Computations

Abstract:A nonet-Cartesian grid method, based on anisotropic/ isotropic refinement, is presented for solving the Euler equations in gas dynamic problems. Grids are generated automatically, by the recursive subdivision of a single cell into nine subcells for isotropic nonet-Cartesian grids and into three subcells independently in each direction for anisotropic nonet-Cartesian grids, encompassing the entire flow domain. The grid generation method is applied here to steady inviscid shock flow computation. A finite difference formulation for the Euler equation using nonet-Cartesian grids is used to treat complex two-dimensional configuration. Results using this approach are shown to be competitive with other methods. Further, it is demonstrated that this method provides a simple and accurate procedure for solving flow problems involving multielement airfoils.
Study of Transonic Separated Flows with zonal-DES Based on Weakly Non-linear Turbulence Model

Abstract:ABSTACT A parallel, finite-volume algorithm has been developed with hybrid Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and large eddy simulation (LES) methods for the transonic separated flows around NASA TN D-712 wing-fuselage standard model at high angles of attack. The algorithm includes Roe flux-difference splitting with Radespiel-Swanson entropy fix and second-order fully implicit Lower-Upper Symmetric-Gauss-Seidel with pseudo time sub-iteration time marching. The parallel implementation is done using the message-passing-interface programming model. To test the capabilities of numerical methods for turbulence simulation, hybrid RANS/LES method based on weakly non-linear k-ω model with Durbin correction were realized by introducing the length scale in the original turbulence model (zonal detached-eddy-simulation type). The main objective is to apply this hybrid method based on the non-linear turbulence model for high Reynolds transonic separated flows accounting for the effect on interactions between the wing and fuselage. The hybrid method was designed to have a RANS mode near the solid wall and have a LES behavior in the core flow region. At the same time, another two-equation shear-stress-transport model developed by Menter was applied to predict the flow with shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction over ONERA-M6 wing. Reasonable agreement with the available experimental results, including the effect on the turbulence models, was obtained for these separated flows.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:Based on fully overlapping domain decomposition and a recent variational multiscale method, a parallel finite element variational multiscale method for convection dominated incompressible flows is proposed and analyzed. In this method, each processor computes a local finite element solution in its own subdomain using a global mesh that is locally refined around its own subdomain, where a stabilization term based on two local Gauss integrations is adopted to stabilize the numerical form of the Navier–Stokes equations. Using the technical tool of local a priori estimate for the finite element solution, error bounds of the discrete solution are estimated. Algorithmic parameter scalings are derived. Numerical tests are also given to verify the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
