Abstract:We propose a novel variational approach for limit cycles of a kind of nonlinear oscillators. Some examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness and convenience of the method. The obtained results are valid for the whole solution domain with high accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an analytical approach (VIM-Padé) based on the variational iteration method (VIM), Laplace transformation and the Padé approximation. We apply this technique to solve the strongly nonlinear oscillators with cubic and harmonic restoring force. The approximated solutions to the initial value problems are provided and compared with the original variational iteration method solutions and the numerical solutions obtained by Runge-Kutta method. Numerical experiments show that the VIM-Padé technique is efficient for solving the strongly nonlinear oscillators.

Abstract:A limit cycle is a self-sustained periodic motion appearing in autonomous ordinary differential equations. As the period of the limit cycle is a-priori unknown, it is challenging to find them as stationary states of a rotating ansatz. Correspondingly, their study commonly relies on brute-force time-evolution or on circumstantial evidence such as instabilities of fixed points. Alas, such approaches are unable to account for the coexistence of multiple solutions, as they rely on specific initial conditions. Here, we develop a multifrequency rotating ansatz with which we find limit cycles as stationary states. We demonstrate our approach and its performance in the simplest case of the Van der Pol oscillator. Moving beyond the simplest example, we show that our method can capture the coexistence of all fixed-point attractors and limit cycles in a modified nonlinear Van der Pol oscillator. Our results facilitate the systematic mapping of out-of-equilibrium phase diagrams, with implications across all fields of natural science.

Abstract:A novel control strategy based on the nonlinear observer technique for a class of chaotic oscillations is proposed. By assuming that the exact model of the system is not known, the control strategy employs a nonlinear observer to track the states and disturbances of the nonlinear system, and then constructs a nonlinear feedback law. Simulation results on van der Pol oscillator are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the control strategy.

Abstract:This paper applies He's new amplitude-frequency relationship recently established by Ji-Huan He (Int J Appl Comput Math 3 1557-1560, 2017) to study periodic solutions of strongly nonlinear systems with odd nonlinearities. Some examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness, ease and convenience of the method. In general, the results are valid for small as well as large oscillation amplitude. The method can be easily extended to other nonlinear systems with odd nonlinearities and can therefore be found widely applicable in engineering and other science. The method used in this paper can be applied directly to highly nonlinear problems without any discretization, linearization or additional requirements.

Abstract:Abstract In cases where physical processes cannot be described by linear equations, and nonlinear equations are difficult to solve mathematically, we have to use approximate solutions to such problems. One such example is the description of the Kapitsa pendulum, which is a pendulum with a vibrating suspension point. In contrast to the previously known methods of describing such a problem, in this paper we propose to use additional variables in the form of higher derivatives, which allows us to obtain corrections that give a more detailed contribution to the description of this problem.

Abstract:The variational method employing the amplitude and width as collective coordinates of the Klein-Gordon oscillon leads to a dynamical system with unstable periodic orbits that blow up when perturbed. We propose a multiscale variational approach free from the blow-up singularities. An essential feature of the proposed trial function is the inclusion of the third collective variable: a correction for the nonuniform phase growth. In addition to determining the parameters of the oscillon, our approach detects the onset of its instability.

This paper introduces a generalized integral transform that encompasses the Laplace, Fourier, and numerous contemporary integral transforms as particular instances, while preserving their defining characteristics. Secondly, we propose the application of the generalized integral transform in the variational iteration method for the straightforward identification of the Lagrange multiplier, thus enabling the resolution of nonlinear oscillator problems. Finally, we present a series of illustrative examples to demonstrate the efficacy of this approach.

Abstract:We propose a method for designing two-dimensional limit-cycle oscillators with prescribed periodic trajectories and phase response properties based on the phase reduction theory, which gives a concise description of weakly-perturbed limit-cycle oscillators and is widely used in the analysis of synchronization dynamics. We develop an algorithm for designing the vector field with a stable limit cycle, which possesses a given shape and also a given phase sensitivity function. The vector field of the limit-cycle oscillator is approximated by polynomials whose coefficients are estimated by convex optimization. Linear stability of the limit cycle is ensured by introducing an upper bound to the Floquet exponent. The validity of the proposed method is verified numerically by designing several types of two-dimensional existing and artificial oscillators. As applications, we first design a limit-cycle oscillator with an artificial star-shaped periodic trajectory and demonstrate global entrainment. We then design a limit-cycle oscillator with an artificial high-harmonic phase sensitivity function and demonstrate multistable entrainment caused by a high-frequency periodic input.

Abstract:Cyclic motions in vertebrates, including heart beating, breathing and walking, are derived by a network of biological oscillators having fascinating features such as entrainment, environment adaptation, and robustness. These features encouraged engineers to use oscillators for generating cyclic motions. To this end, it is crucial to have oscillators capable of characterizing any periodic signal via a stable limit cycle. In this paper, we propose a 2-dimensional oscillator whose limit cycle can be matched to any periodic signal depicting a non-self-intersecting curve in the state space. In particular, the proposed oscillator is designed as an autonomous vector field directed toward the desired limit cycle. To this purpose, the desired reference signal is parameterized with respect to a state-dependent phase variable, then the oscillator's states track the parameterized signal. We also present a state transformation technique to bound the oscillator's output and its first time derivative. The soundness of the proposed oscillator has been verified by carrying out a few simulations.

Abstract:Journal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration and Active Control, Ahead of Print. The wide applicability of a nonlinear oscillator is the main reason why it has gained so much attention from mathematicians and scientists, while it is difficult to be solved both numerically and theoretically. Variational iteration method is one of the numerical approaches which are used to investigate these nonlinear systems. In this paper, we present a nonlinear oscillator arising in a micro-electromechanical system as an example and derive its analytical solution by He's frequency formula method and variational iteration method coupled with a new general integral transformation. The Lagrange multiplier is formulated and the new iterative format for the correction functional of the variational iteration method is given by the general integral transformation. The approximate nonlinear frequencies are achieved by this new technique and compared with the numerical ones obtained by the Runge–Kutta method. The new general integral transformation has the same essential qualities as those for Laplace and Fourier transform, and it becomes a promising tool to nonlinear problems when coupled with the variational iteration method.

Modified Semi-Classical Methods for Nonlinear Quantum Oscillations Problems

Abstract:We develop a modified semi-classical approach to the approximate solution of Schrodinger's equation for certain nonlinear quantum oscillations problems. At lowest order, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of the conventional semi-classical formalism is replaced by an inverted-potential-vanishing-energy variant thereof. Under smoothness, convexity and coercivity hypotheses on its potential energy function, we prove, using the calculus of variations together with the Banach space implicit function theorem, the existence of a global, smooth `fundamental solution'. Higher order quantum corrections, for ground and excited states, are computed through the integration of associated systems of linear transport equations, and formal expansions for the corresponding energy eigenvalues obtained by imposing smoothness on the quantum corrections to the eigenfunctions. For linear oscillators our expansions naturally truncate, reproducing the well-known solutions for the energy eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. As an application, we calculate a number of terms in the corresponding expansions for the one-dimensional anharmonic oscillators of quartic, sectic, octic, and dectic types and find that our eigenvalue expansions agree with those of Rayleigh/Schrodinger theory, whereas our wave functions more accurately capture the more-rapid-than-gaussian decay. For the quartic oscillator our results strongly suggest that the ground state energy eigenvalue expansion and its associated wave function expansion are Borel summable to yield natural candidates for the actual exact ground state solution and its energy. Our techniques for proving the existence of the crucial `fundamental solution' to the relevant Hamilton Jacobi equation admit infinite dimensional generalizations. In a parallel project we shall show how this construction can be carried out for the Yang-Mills equations in Minkowski spacetime.

Abstract:In this paper, collocation methods for linear Volterra integral equations with highly oscillatory trigonometric kernels are considered. Different from the cases with linear oscillator, we need a further action to obtain a practical scheme for general oscillators. To deal with it, the moment free Filon type method is employed in the exact collocation equation resulting to a fully discretized one. In order to conduct the convergence analysis, we firstly study the highly oscillatory integrals occurring in the error equations. Both the theoretical and numerical results show that our method not only converges with respect to step length but also has an asymptotic order which could be two. The asymptotic order indicates that the numerical results will become more accurate as the increase of frequency.

Abstract:In the absence of external forcing, all trajectories on the phase plane of the van der Pol oscillator tend to a closed, periodic, trajectory -- the limit cycle -- after infinite time. Here, we drive the van der Pol oscillator with an external time-dependent force to reach the limit cycle in a given finite time. Specifically, we are interested in minimising the non-conservative contribution to the work when driving the system from a given initial point on the phase plane to any final point belonging to the limit cycle. There appears a speed limit inequality, which expresses a trade-off between the connection time and cost -- in terms of the non-conservative work. We show how the above results can be { generalized to the broader family of non-linear oscillators given by} the Liénard equation. Finally, we also look into the problem of minimising the total work done by the external force.

Abstract:In this study, novel criteria are derived to ensure the oscillation of solutions in nonlinear advanced noncanonical dynamic equations. The obtained results are reminiscent of the criteria proposed by Hille and Ohriska for canonical dynamic equations. Additionally, this paper addresses a previously unresolved issue found in numerous existing works in the literature on advanced dynamic equations. This study provides a range of illustrative examples to showcase the precision, practicality, and adaptability of the obtained findings.

Abstract:In the quantitative analysis of limit cycles, dealing with the exponential function ( ex ) poses significant challenges. To address this, the exponential function is incorporated into the perturbation incremental method (PIM) and expanded as part of equation into Taylor series and Fourier series. This study comprehensively presents the implementation details of PIM with the exponential function. Subsequently, approximate expressions for limit cycles are derived based on four types of two-stroke oscillators characterized by distinct functions proposed by Le Corbeiller, Van der Pol, and De Figueiredo. Relationships between the positions of these characteristic functions and the resulting limit cycles are also investigated. Quantitatively, it is demonstrated that the characteristic function intersects the x -axis at exactly one point within the limit cycle range of the two-stroke oscillator, excluding the origin. Moreover, it is observed that for a nonlinear parameter where 0.5<λ<0.6 , a particular type of two-stroke oscillation transitions into a four-stroke oscillation due to an increase in the number of intersections with the x -axis from one to two within the limit cycle range. Finally, the results indicate that the approximate expressions of the limit cycles obtained through PIM closely match those obtained from numerical algorithms such as the Runge–Kutta method.

Abstract:Deriving analytical relationship between the system parameters and amplitude of the limit cycle is a meaningful and challenging task. Currently, numerous existing analytical approximate methods struggle to achieve this goal when expressions of restoring force or nonlinear damping is complicated. To overcome this shortcoming, this study proposes a modified generalized harmonic function perturbation method. Using the proposed method, a generalized mixed Rayleigh–Liénard oscillator with cubic and quintic nonlinearities was investigated. The analytical relationships between the system parameters and amplitude of the limit cycle, as well as the expression of its characteristic quantity, were derived. By employing these analytical relationships, the existence, stability, number, position, and amplitude of each limit cycle are quantitatively analysed. The homoclinic and heteroclinic bifurcations were also predicted using the above analytical relationships. Additionally, analytical approximate solutions for this oscillator were calculated using the proposed method. All results obtained in this study were subsequently confirmed numerically to demonstrate their feasibility and validity. Consequently, the proposed method can be considered an effective supplement to perturbation-based methods. This also implies that the work presented in this paper has a certain theoretical significance and application value in the research area of quantitative analysis methods for strongly nonlinear oscillators.

Functionally-fitted energy-preserving methods for solving oscillatory nonlinear Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:In the last few decades, numerical simulation for nonlinear oscillators has received a great deal of attention, and many researchers have been concerned with the design and analysis of numerical methods for solving oscillatory problems. In this paper, from the perspective of the continuous finite element method, we propose and analyze new energy-preserving functionally fitted methods, in particular trigonometrically fitted methods of an arbitrarily high order for solving oscillatory nonlinear Hamiltonian systems with a fixed frequency. To implement these new methods in a widespread way, they are transformed into a class of continuous-stage Runge--Kutta methods. This paper is accompanied by numerical experiments on oscillatory Hamiltonian systems such as the FPU problem and nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The numerical results demonstrate the remarkable accuracy and efficiency of our new methods compared with the existing high-order energy-preserving methods in the literature.

On the variational treatment of a class of double-well oscillators

Abstract:We compare the well known Rayleigh-Ritz variational method (RRVM) with a recently proposed approach based on supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization method (SSQMGS). We apply both procedures to a particular class of double-well harmonic oscillators that had been conveniently chosen for the application of the latter approach. The RRVM eigenvalues converge smoothly from above providing much more accurate results with less computational effort. Present results show that the unproved SSQMGS upper bounds do not hold.

Abstract:A perturbation–incremental method is extended for the analysis of strongly non-linear non-autonomous oscillators of the form x¨+g(x)=εf(x,x˙,Ωt), where g(x) and f(x,x˙,Ωt) are arbitrary non-linear functions of their arguments, and ε can take arbitrary values. Limit cycles of the oscillators can be calculated to any desired degree of accuracy and their stabilities are determined by the Floquet theory. Branch switching at period-doubling bifurcation along a frequency–response curve is made simple by the present method. Subsequent continuation of an emanating branch is also discussed.
