Abstract:Information retrieve is one of the most important operations in computer information systems. This paper presents a kind of fuzzy information retrieve method based on soft computing (SCFIR for short). SCFIR adopts fuzzy clustering analysis and artificial neural networks to organize databases in systems so as to increase the efficiency of fuzzy retrieve. At the same time, SCFTR realizes the understanding of query sentences in natural language by means of heuristic induct leading mechanism, interactional grammar analysis and semantic analysis. Finally, SCFTR applies several machine learning mechanisms (such as connective learning, evolutive learning, rough sets and so on) in the maintenance of system knowledge base, and thus the effectiveness and feasibility of retrieve systems are improved availably.

Abstract:Many types of heterogeneous CAD models created by previous product development activities are stored in enterprise databases. Searching reusable CAD models for engineer design requirements is still very difficult. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based semantic retrieval approach for heterogeneous 3D CAD models by using semantic web theory and information retrieval theory. By exploiting layered feature ontology and ontology mapping, a uniform description for heterogeneous CAD models is generated as semantic descriptor. Meanwhile, to improve the representative ability, several heuristic rules are constructed with the aid of SWRL language and ontology reasoning is acted on the semantic descriptors, which makes our retrieval system achieve better performance. Furthermore, multi-mode similarity measurement is carried out to meet engineers diversified requirements. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach through experiments on heterogeneous 3D CAD model library.

Abstract:To harvest the potential benefits of electronic health record (EHR), the health record data must be in a standard, structured and computer understandable form. The Health Level 7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved standard that specifies the hierarchical structure and semantics of clinical documents for the purpose of exchange. As CDA is used more widely, the efficient management, storage and retrieval of CDA documents become an issue. This paper describes a clinical repository for CDA documents based on Oracle XML database. In the repository, clinical documents exist in the form of enhanced CDA with digital signature. This repository supports both traditional database features with statistical analysis ability and standard protocol for common file management. We implemented this clinical document repository in an EHR system.

Abstract:A web-based Standardized Aerosol Repository System (SARS) was developed to facilitate relevant associated with atmospheric aerosols. A new method was proposed to obtain the digitized data from literatures, followed by data processing, storage and services. Moreover, a repository was set up to support an online aerosol-literature-knowledge-service module which provides special services including "keyword query, thesis topic classification, duplicate check, paper evaluation and data visualization". Furthermore, crowdsourcing, a distributed problem solving mechanism was proposed that the users can submit formatted data to update and expand the repository. At the same time, the web page of crowdsourcing submission also optimizes the user interaction such as adding thesaurus and drop-down options to ensure the users' experience. The SARS is expected to provide a convenient platform for sharing aerosol data and maximize the data usage in the atmospheric aerosol research community.

Abstract:Navigating the vast scientific literature often starts with browsing a paper's abstract. However, when a reader seeks additional information, not present in the abstract, they face a costly cognitive chasm during their dive into the full text. To bridge this gap, we introduce recursively expandable abstracts, a novel interaction paradigm that dynamically expands abstracts by progressively incorporating additional information from the papers' full text. This lightweight interaction allows scholars to specify their information needs by quickly brushing over the abstract or selecting AI-suggested expandable entities. Relevant information is synthesized using a retrieval-augmented generation approach, presented as a fluid, threaded expansion of the abstract, and made efficiently verifiable via attribution to relevant source-passages in the paper. Through a series of user studies, we demonstrate the utility of recursively expandable abstracts and identify future opportunities to support low-effort and just-in-time exploration of long-form information contexts through LLM-powered interactions.

Abstract:This Paper introduces PKUSpace - a collaborative platform for scientific learning and researching. Supported by efficient automated metadata extraction and powerful text classification modules, PKUSpace provides users with a very helpful and interactive procedure to upload e-resources. We use heuristic methods and regular expression matching techniques to mine different patterns and extract relevant metadata. Upon the well-organized e-sources, we builds a uniform retrieval interface with multi-function to provide taxonomy navigation, full-text search, structural search in the metadata level and meta-searching module with novel result-merging method. Combining two on-line scoring methods: scoring with exponential distribution and metadata scoring, we achieve an effective merging result of matched documents. Furthermore, PKUSpace provides an academic forum for students and professional users in every community to discuss their ideas and research work freely.

Abstract:In this paper,the elements of 51 Chinese and English academic information retrieval systems are investigated and analyzed,respectively from aspects of update cycle,peer review,service types,service mode,help,personalized service,stimulation,retrieval methods,browsing/navigation,search fields,search techniques,recall/precision,relevance feedback,sorting/grouping,format/display,output of result,item identification/mark,classification/subject description,hyperlinks,and meta retrieval etc.The results reveal that ① the elements of Chinese and English academic information retrieval systems are similar,but Chinese database need to do more;② improving the analysis and design of output of retrieval systems;③ expanding the application of meta retrieval;④ extending the depth and breadth of personalized service;⑤ providing value-added services.

Abstract:Through cal ing CADAL metadata open interfaces system, Tsinghua University Library OPAC system can search and integrate metadata of CADAL digital resources, and publish record ful text access links in the result page, which could enhance readers experiences and improve CADAL digital resources rendering and utilization, and readers could retrieve and utilize related CADAL digital resources conveniently when they are using OPAC system. This paper focuses on design and implementation of CADAC metadata search and integration in OPAC system, which could be a good reference for the same type of library or system designers.

Abstract:Computer-assisted chemical structure searching plays a critical role for efficient structure screening in cheminformatics. We designed a high-performance chemical structure & data search engine called DCAIKU, built on CouchDB and ElasticSearch engines. DCAIKU converts the chemical structure similarity search problem into a general text search problem to utilize off-the-shelf full-text search engines. DCAIKU also supports flexible document structures and heterogeneous datasets with the help of schema-less document database. Our evaluations show that DCAIKU can handle both keyword search and structural search against millions of records with both high accuracy and low latency. We expect that DCAIKU will lay the foundation towards large-scale and cost-effective structural search in materials science and chemistry research.

Abstract:Applying information retrieval techniques to the distributed materials science domain environment is a unique challenge, mostly because of numerous, loosely coupled jobs that access and generate large data sets, and also its complex and the richness of the different types of information it provides. Effective searching tool in such environments is challenging due to the geographically distributed resources for such large-scale data-intensive problems. We present a specific searching engine for the materials science data. This paper introduces CFAnalyzer, a segmentation analyzer, which pays special attentions to molecular formula and such complex data by making it easy to use and effective. This materials data segmentation is based on molecular formula and synonym filter. A chemical element dictionary is constructed for segmenting Chinese materials name and molecular formulas. And then synonym filter is built by adding synonyms for searching relevant documents. In our experiments, we compared our search engine from segmentation, speed, space and searching results. The initial evaluations show promising results in searching materials science data.
An Investigation of the Academic Information Finding and Re-finding Behavior on the Web

Abstract:Academic researchers often need and re-use relevant information found after a period of time. This preliminary study used various methods, including experiments, interviews, search log analysis, sequential analysis, and observation to investigate characteristics of academic information finding and re-finding behavior. Overall, the participants in this study entered short queries either in finding or re-finding phases. Comparatively speaking, the participants entered greater number of queries, modified more queries, browsed more web pages, and stayed longer on web pages in the finding phase. On the other hand, in the re-finding phase, they utilized personal information management tools to re-find instead of finding again using search engine, such as checking browsing history; moreover, they tend to input less number of queries and stayed shorter on web pages. In short, the participants interacted more with the retrieval system during the finding phase, while they increased the use of personal information management tools in the re-finding phase. As to the contextual clues used in re-finding phase, the participants used less clues from the target itself, instead, they used indirect clues more often, especially location-related information. Based on the results of sequential analysis, the transition states in the re-finding phase was found to be more complex than those in the finding phase. Web information finding and re-finding behavior is an important and novel area of research. The preliminary results would benefit research on Web information re-finding behavior, and provide useful suggestions for developing personal academic information management systems. Abstract:Through as an important part of service-oriented system architecture, service retrieval receives much attention from industry and academia and many methods have been proposed, there is still much to be expected of the recall, precision, efficiency and easiness of service retrieval. One important cause of this is that users cannot define their service retrieval requirements precisely and completely and this limits the function of ontology service models. Hence, an efficient service retrieval system should be able to support partial matching and help users to refine their retrieval requirements. The paper introduces a mechanism to assist users in giving high quality retrieval requirements. The goodness of the introduced mechanism to the recall, precision, efficiency and easiness of service retrieval is analyzed and its feasibility and effectivity is also verified through experiments.

Abstract:Since federated searching and next generation library catalog technology are dictated by the slowest-responding resource,and there are issues with the ability of these resources to merge,it is difficult to meet with the need of young users.However,Web scale discovery service which based on the developing of cloud computing is the integrating and transcendence of them.There is a very large base of content indexed.It can provide similar academic search experience like Google Scholar,and also has a vertical academic index feature.Web scale discovery service such as WorldCat Local,Summon,EBSCO Discovery Service and Primo Central have a powerful search function,single search box and other characteristics,and the improvement has been achieved in American libraries.Data coverage and reliability are also worthy of consideration.Although Web scale discovery in China has just begun,it can improve the utilization rate of the library's database.The development of Chinese Web scale discovery service is an urgent matter.

Abstract:Scorpion is a research project by OCLC for automatic indexing and cataloging of electronic resources using the Dewey Decimal Classification System.The paper introduces most of Scorpion's research work up to date,including verification of whether the Dewey Decimal Classification System can be used in automatic topic recognition,experiments for Scorpion Dewey Classification Database setup and evaluations,improvement and quality evaluation of Scorpion result sets and so on.It also analyses some core technologies of the project.At last,the author gives a brief evaluation on Scorpion's research work and its latest progresses in automatic indexing.
