Abstract:During the last 10 years, dramatic progress has been achieved in the molecular basis of disease transformation of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Currently, GISTs are defined as KIT-positive mesenchymal tumors with specific histological characteristics that occur primarily in the gastrointestinal tract and abdomen. In terms of distribution, approximately 70% of these tumors are found in the stomach. Clinical presentation of GISTs is variable, from massive gastrointestinal bleeding to incidental discovery during the laparotomy of unrelated disease. Before the advent of Gleevec, surgical resection was the only curative treatment modality for GISTs. In this article, we report a rare case of a huge exophytic GIST of the stomach, which had grown rapidly, with massive central necrosis and liquefaction. We completely resected the lesion and tried to explore the use of Gleevec in adjuvant treatment after complete tumor resection.
