Veneration:between Reverence and Esteem

Abstract:Veneration is a center concept in a set of concepts.By means of interpretation from linguistic philosophy,we can grasp its core is respect,its two ends are reverence and esteem.Through retracing the history of thought,we notice that Chinese and Western cultures put focus on different levels of this concept: religious and ethical,and they are often understood as instinct.Through phenomenological analysis, we can find,on the one hand,the difference in the feature of the conscious object in veneration:the object of conscious experience reverence is covert,while that of esteem is overt;on the other hand,the difference in the feature of the conscious activity:reverence and esteem contain the basic element:dependence and admiration respectively.At last,the thinking on the relationship between conscience and knowledge will show summarily that grasping the structure of the conscious experience veneration can help us understand some social phenomena nowadays and the characteristic of our era.
