Adolescents' Emotional Intelligence and Its Relation to Social Adjustment

Abstract:The present study aims to explore the characteristics of adolescents' emotional intelligence and the relationship between EI and social adjustment.There were 2533 adolescent subjects from six cities who completed the questionnaires measuring EI,five-factor personality and social adjustment.The results show that:(1) The characteristics of the four factors of EI are different;(2) The ability of perceiving emotion negatively predicts dealing efficiency,violation behavior,and positive coping;the ability of using emotion to facilitate thinking positively predicts pro-social behavior;the ability of understanding behavior positivly predicts all the four factors of social adjustment;the ability of managing behavior positively predicts efficiently dealing,negatively predicts violating behavior;(3) Compared with the influence of five-factor personality,EI can especially facilitate adolescents' positive coping to the difficulties and frustrations in life.
