Abstract:Ag colloid was found to enhance intensely the chemiluminescence (CL) from the reaction between luminol and hydrogen peroxide. Ag nanoparticles exhibited the better CL catalysis activity than gold and platinum nanoparticles. The superoxide anion scavenger nitro blue tetrazolium and superoxide dismutase was added to the hydrogen peroxide–Ag colloid and the luminol–hydrogen peroxide–Ag colloid systems, respectively, showing that the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by catalysis of silver nanoparticles formed superoxide anion and superoxide anion was involved in luminol–hydrogen peroxide–Ag colloid CL reaction. The Ag nanoparticle-enhanced CL was ascribed to that Ag nanoparticles could catalyze the decomposition of H2O2 to produce some reactive intermediates such as hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion. Hydroxyl radical reacted with luminol to form luminol radical and diazaquinone, followed by the reaction with superoxide anion or monodissociated hydrogen peroxide, giving rising to light emission. Halide ions (X−) were found to quench the CL in the following order: I−>Br−>Cl−, due to the formation of AgX shell on Ag nanoparticles surface which poisoned the Ag catalyst. An obvious turning point was observed in the curve of CL intensity versus iodine ion concentration, which corresponded to the I− concentration needed for mono-layer saturation adsorption on the Ag nanoparticles. A chemical adsorption model for iodine ions on the surface of Ag colloids has been proposed. Among 20 natural amino acids, cysteine, histidine, methionine, tyrosine and tryptophan were found to inhibit the CL due to their adsorption on the Ag nanoparticles and their competitive consumption for the reactive intermediates. The most intense inhibition of cysteine may be of potential for selective determination of cysteine.
Ph-Responsive Luminescent Properties of Ag@PPy Nanoparticles

Abstract:We measure the emission spectra and quantum yields of Ag@PPy nanoparticles with different volume ratios of Ag core and PPy shell, and ascribe the emission peaks around 460 and 520 nm, respectively, to the S(1) → S(0) transition of the PPy molecule, and to the charge transfer between Ag and PPy, as well as the Ag plasmon. The two peaks shift with the changed doping level of the PPy shell, which can be elucidated by consideration of the energy levels of Ag and PPy. According to these results, we investigate the fast and reversible pH-sensing function of Ag@PPy nanoparticles on the basis of the doping effect on the interaction between the Ag core and the PPy shell.

Abstract:In this paper, the synthesis and properties of composite silica microspheres grafted with gold nanoparticles and lanthanide-polyoxometalates are described. This synthesis employs polyethyleneimine as the crosslink polymer to immobilize the Au nanoparticles and lanthanide-polyoxometalates on silica spheres, which results in the formation of bifunctional composite microspheres of silica/lanthanide-polyoxometalates/Au. The composite material was found to be catalytically active in the oxidation of styrene, and benzaldehyde and styrene oxide were the main products. Catalyzed oxidation of styrene demonstrates the size-dependent activity of catalysts and the smaller catalyst shows the higher selectivity. Moreover, the composite particles show bright red luminescence under UV light, which could be seen by naked eyes. The luminescence properties of composite material and the effect of Au nanoparticles on the luminescence of Eu ion were investigated, and energy could be more effectively transferred from ligand to lanthanide ion when Au nanoparticles were grafted on silica spheres. The integration of luminescent components and Au particles makes it possible to label catalyst and monitor the catalyzed reactions.
Influence of Ph Upon Surface-Enhanced Enzyme-Catalyzed Luminol Chemiluminescence at Vicinity of Nanoscale-Corrugated Gold and Silver Films.

Abstract:Au and Ag biochips were fabricated to investigate the influence of pH upon the chemiluminescence (CL) of luminol at vicinity of surface-adsorbed peroxidase. A nanoscaled-corrugation of the metal induces an enhancement of the luminol CL which is maximal in the pH range favoring peroxidase catalysis and greater for gold than for silver. This is the proof that, in the CL process, the reactions involving peroxidase are surface-enhanced near corrugated surfaces.

Abstract:Particles collision onto a surface or an interface is a novel electrochemical approach, which can be used to investigate the behavior of single entities. Benefiting from advantages including single particle/single event resolution, label-free detection and high sensitivity, this technique has been widely employed in the study of electrocatalytic amplification of detection signal by nanoparticles. Herein, we report the investigation of the collisional electrocatalytic behaviors of novel Pd Ag hyperbranched nanoparticles through the observation of catalysis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation. The newly prepared Pd Ag hyperbranched nanoparticles have been characterized by cyclic voltammetry and surface techniques. They can obviously reduce the overpotential of the reduction of H2O2 and show the high electrocatalytic activity. When the nanoparticles collide onto the electrode via the Brownian random motion, electrocatalytic reaction occurs and results in significant current increases, which could provide information about nanoparticles and electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, concentration and potential dependence are also investigated in detail, which confirms the reliability and universality of this methodology as an ultra-sensitive probe. Based on these results, it is clearly shown that such platform is promising in further applications for biosensing and single nanoparticle analysis.
Ph-Dependent Growth of Atomic Pd Layers on Trisoctahedral Gold Nanoparticles to Realize Enhanced Performance in Electrocatalysis and Chemical Catalysis

Abstract:In this work, the controlled epitaxial growth of ultrathin Pd shells of a few atomic layers (denoted as nL) on the surfaces of gold nanoparticle (Au NP) cores of different morphologies (trisoctahedral, cubic, and spherical shapes) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was achieved by regulating the pH value of the aqueous CTAC solution and finely tuning the amount of the Pd precursor. It was found that the critical shell thickness for epitaxial Pd growth at the optimal pH value was 4 atomic layers, taking {331}-faceted trisoctahedral (TOH) Au@Pd-nL NPs as an example, on the basis of the results of atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images. Moreover, the resulting TOH Au@Pd-1L NPs (100.9 m(2) g(-1), 13.2 A mg(Pd)(-1) and 13.1 mA cm(-2)) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance and long-term electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation, around 4.8-fold, 66-fold, and 21.8-fold better than commercial Pd/C catalysts (31 m(2) g(-1), 0.2 A mg(Pd)(-1), and 0.6 mA cm(-2)). Furthermore, the resulting TOH Au@Pd-1L NPs not only markedly enhance the chemical catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), but also allow the in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) monitoring of the reaction process of the Pd-catalyzed reduction of 4-NTP. Thus, our work may provide a new way to fabricate core-shell (CS) bimetallic NPs with the merits of both metal outer shells (excellent catalytic performance in electrocatalysis and chemical catalysis) and Au NP cores (reaction process by in situ SERS monitoring).
Temperature-Responsive Multifunctional Switchable Nanoreactors of Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide)/sio2/lanthanide-polyoxometalates/au: Controlled On/Off Catalytic and Luminescent System

Abstract:A method was developed for the preparation of temperature-responsive multifunctional nanoreactor by coating the poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) on the external surface of silicallanthanide-POMs/Au spheres. The nanoreactor showed the repeated on/off catalytic activity and switchable luminescence by temperature stimuli. For example, the nanocomplexes showed strong red luminescence in solution and excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol at 25 degrees C. However, when the temperature was 40 degrees C, the red luminescence almost disappeared in solution and catalytic activity was sharply decreased. Moreover, in solutions of K4Fe(CN)(6) containing Na2SO4 at 25 degrees C, it demonstrated the well-defined cyclic voltammograms (CV) peaks with large peak currents, showing the "on" state; at 40 degrees C, the CV response was significantly suppressed, showing the "off" state. The smart nanoreactors have great potential for applications in many fields, such as bio-materials, controlled labeling catalysis, switches and so on. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Temperature/pH Dual-Responsive Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide)/chitosancoated Luminescent Composite Nanospheres: Fabrication and Controllable Luminescence

Abstract:Thermo/pH dual-responsive luminescent composites consisting of lanthanide-polyoxometalates and Poly (Nisopropylacrylamide)/Chitosan were synthesized. The dual-responsive nanoparticles are characterized by the FT-IR, UV-vis, TEM, SEM, TGA, DLS and luminescence. The prepared composites exhibit the thermo/pH-responsive properties and the controllable and switchable luminescence in solution in response to the simple changes in temperature and pH values. For instance, the composite hydrogels exhibit intense red luminescence under UV irradiation below 34 degrees C, and the luminescence become much weaker in solution above 34 degrees C. Moreover, the hydrogel could not show red luminescence in the buffer solution with low pH value. However, it shows bright red luminescence in neutral and alkaline buffer solution. The possible reasons for controllable luminescence are discussed in the research. The results suggest that the multifunctional nanoparticles could be potentially used in biomedical fields such as luminescent switches, biological labeling and imaging.

Abstract:Catalytic ability of bi-metal hybrid nanoagents largely depends on their phase constitution and morphology, also bearing a close correlation to the fabrication process. We herein design and develop a modified polyol protocol with inorganic ion induction for rationally constructing Ag nanoagents with tunable shapes (nanowire, nanocube, and nanoparticle), followed by evenly anchoring of stepwise reduced Pd nanograins on the surface of Ag nanoagents to foster Ag core - Pd shell (i.e. Pd@Ag) nanosized heterostructure. A home-made photochemical reaction device is used to scientifically evaluate the catalytic ability of the Pd@Ag nanoagents on hydrolyzing ammonia borane to evolve hydrogen gas. The ample characterization reveals that the fabricated Ag nanoagents hold the expected regular and uniform shapes, with 10–15 nm thick Pd layer cladded on their surfaces. The particular shapes of the Ag nanoagents can be duly manipulated via the induction of inorganic ions, and the thickness and compactness of the Pd shell can also be suitably regulated by controlling reduction duration. The verified formation of electron synergistic effect among the both metals is favorable to elevate the catalytic ability. The bimetal Pd@Ag nanoagents perform the superior catalytic activity under visible light irradiation, far exceeding that of the respective monometal counterparts, with the order of catalytic activity: Pd@Ag-NWs > Pd@Ag-NCs > Pd@Ag-NPs. The hydrolysis reaction at the given conditions is confirmed to be quasi first-order reaction, with the apparent activation energy of 53.44 kJ·mol−1 and TOF value of 47.04 min−1. The Pd@Ag-NWs catalyst behaves satisfactory stability, with 87.8 % initial catalytic activity retained after five cyclic use.

High-contrast Flicker Luminescence on Dynamic Covalent Structure Based Nanoaggregates

Abstract:In nanoscience, molecular switches have played a significant role to deliver different control abilities to practical functions, whereas high-contrast luminescence switchable manipulation at nanoscale is still limited. Since the tuning for emission behavior with high contrast ratio strongly connects to numerous visualized sensing and optoelectronic applications, we here report that autonomous pH control can be enrolled to address a high-contrast molecular emission change at the nanoaggregated level, for gaining a flicker luminescence performance in aqueous media. Employing a BODIPY contained dynamic covalent dye, we find its luminescent signal and nanoaggregate size can be spontaneously adjusted in water. On this basis, high-contrast luminescence switching of the material can be achieved upon the alternate introduction of base and acid into the aggregation state. Such a behavior can be attributed to a pH triggered photo-induced electron transfer regulation process. The dye aggregates can be well endocytosed for bioimaging and its luminescent variation can be autonomously displayed as a flicker effect. These results provide new visions for the design and development of smart materials with a dynamic luminescence behavior.
Reversible Luminescent Nanoswitches Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement of Silver Nanoclusters for Luminescence Turn-on Assay of Inorganic Pyrophosphatase Activity.

Abstract:Unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property has been found and widely applied in chemo/biosensors for thiolated gold nanoclusters and copper nanoclusters; however, little is known about this property of thiolate-protected silver nanoclusters. In this work, specific aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) of glutathione-capped silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) was verified via its solid-state luminescence and enhanced emission in poor solvent, three stimuli responsive nanoswitches were constructed based on its AIEE property, and a reliable and sensitive PPase assay was developed via ion-triggered luminescence switch. Glutathione-capped AgNCs from a facile one-pot synthesis were found to possess bright red luminescence and aggregation-induced emission enhancement property. This AIEE feature enables AgNCs in sensitive response to pH and temperature in a reversible way, allowing the two nanoswitches to precisely monitor the change of environmental pH and temperature. Complexation reactions among AgNCs, aluminum cation and PPi were also designed for an ion-triggered luminescence nanoswitch, which allows selective response to aluminum cation or PPi in luminescence. This ion-driven luminescence switch is further utilized to design a novel detection strategy for PPase activity through competitive coordination reactions. Our method illustrates a novel detection strategy mediated by complexation reaction between Al3+ and AgNCs avoiding the involvement of copper cations in the detection, and this developed assay performed well in detection of PPase level in fresh rat serum. This work confirms unique aggregation-induced emission enhancement property of glutathione-capped AgNCs, constructs multiple luminescence switches based on its multistimuli responsive behaviors, and demonstrates an example of Al3+-mediated detection strategy for PPase assay.

Abstract:<p>Various kinds of amorphous materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxides, and metal phosphates, have demonstrated superior electrocatalytic performance compared with their crystalline counterparts. Compared to other materials for electrocatalysis, noble metals exhibit intrinsically high activity and excellent durability. However, it is still very challenging to prepare amorphous noble‐metal nanomaterials due to the strong interatomic metallic bonding. Herein, the discovery of a unique thiol molecule is reported, namely bismuthiol I, which can induce the transformation of Pd nanomaterials from face‐centered‐cubic (fcc) phase into amorphous phase without destroying their integrity. This ligand‐induced amorphization is realized by post‐synthetic ligand exchange under ambient conditions, and is applicable to fcc Pd nanomaterials with different capping ligands. Importantly, the obtained amorphous Pd nanoparticles exhibit remarkably enhanced activity and excellent stability toward electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acidic solution. This work provides a facile and effective method for preparing amorphous Pd nanomaterials, and demonstrates their promising electrocatalytic application.</p>

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of Rod‐Shape 25‐Atom AuAg Nanoclusters through Ligand Engineering

Abstract:This study enhances bimetallic Au12Ag13 nanocluster electrochemiluminescence (ECL) via ligand engineering (PPh3 to P(Ph‐OMe)3), achieving a 3.6‐fold ECL efficiency boost, notably with 1 mM tri‐n‐propylamine. The proposed ECL mechanisms rooted in nanocluster activities offer promising avenues for improved metal nanocluster ECL in sensing and detection applications. The pursuit of highly emissive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores has long been a goal for both understanding mechanism and advancing detection applications. In this study, we employ ligand engineering to boost the ECL performance of bimetallic Au12Ag13 nanoclusters, substituting the PPh3 ligand with P(Ph‐OMe)3. The results demonstrate a 3.6‐fold enhancement in ECL efficiency following ligand exchange when compared to Au12Ag13‐PPh3, particularly in the presence of 1 mM tri‐n‐propylamine (TPrA) as a coreactant – surpassing the performance of the conventional Ru(bpy)32+ luminophore. Voltammetric analysis reveals the presence of both oxidative and reductive ECL signals under sweeping potentials, with corresponding ECL spectra collected. Proposed ECL mechanisms are rooted in the anodic and cathodic activities of Au12Ag13‐P(Ph‐OMe)3 nanoclusters. Notably, this work captures extremely high and transient ECL signals, sequentially activating LUMO and HOMO states, reminiscent of the behavior observed in Au12Ag13‐PPh3. Our findings present a promising strategy to enhance the ECL of metal nanoclusters, holding potential for further applications in sensing and detection.

Abstract:Ag/Pd nanoparticles stabilized by poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) have been successfully synthesized in various molar ratios. An ex situ UV-visible spectral analysis was employed to elucidate the growth mechanism of Ag/Pd-PVP nanoparticles, and it revealed that the reduction of Ag ions is much easier than Pd ions in our system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data and mixed potential analysis confirm the effect of the amount of PVP protecting agent to the Ag/Pd-PVP's alloy structure. The growth mechanism of Ag/Pd-PVP nanoparticles is affected by the amount of PVP and forms an inhomogeneous alloy structure. Furthermore, the higher the PVP content, the more inhomogeneous the alloy structure, which is silver-rich in the core and palladium-rich on the surface. The catalytic activity of Ag/Pd-PVP nanoparticles for electroless copper was measured by direct plating on a FR-4 substrate, quartz crystal microgravimetry, and linear scan voltammetry. The performance of Ag/Pd-PVP nanoparticles was also compared with the conventional Sn/Pd activator. Ag/Pd-PVP nanoparticles show the potential for a new activator for electroless copper deposition. Novel Optical Property of Ag@Ppy Nanoparticles

Abstract:We characterizied the novel luminescenct properties of Ag@PPy (polypyrrole) nanoparticles, provided an explanation for the observed spectral shift in terms of the energy levels and exploited the Ag@PPy nanoparticles with doping-dependent emission peak shift as a fast reversible pH sensor. In our experiment, two peaks around 460nm and 520nm are observed in the emission spectra for Ag@PPy nanoparticles. In addition, the peak position showed a reversible and fast response to the changed pH value of the medium, suggesting the potential applications of Ag@PPy nanoparticles as a reversible pH-sensor.
Au@AuPd Core-Alloyed Shell Nanoparticles for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity and Selectivity under Visible Light Excitation

Abstract:Plasmonic catalysis has been employed to enhance molecular transformations under visible light excitation, leveraging the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in plasmonic nanoparticles. While plasmonic catalysis has been employed for accelerating reaction rates, achieving control over the reaction selectivity has remained a challenge. In addition, the incorporation of catalytic components into traditional plasmonic-catalytic antenna-reactor nanoparticles often leads to a decrease in optical absorption. To address these issues, this study focuses on the synthesis of bimetallic core@shell Au@AuPd nanoparticles (NPs) with ultralow loadings of palladium (Pd) into gold (Au) NPs. The goal is to achieve NPs with an Au core and a dilute alloyed shell containing both Au and Pd, with a low Pd content of around 10 atom %. By employing the (photo)electrocatalytic nitrite reduction reaction (NO2RR) as a model transformation, experimental and theoretical analyses show that this design enables enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity under visible light illumination. We found that the optimized Pd distribution in the alloyed shell allowed for stronger interaction with key adsorbed species, leading to improved catalytic activity and selectivity, both under no illumination and under visible light excitation conditions. The findings provide valuable insights for the rational design of antenna-reactor plasmonic-catalytic NPs with controlled activities and selectivity under visible light irradiation, addressing critical challenges to enable sustainable molecular transformations.
Direct observation of the plasmon-enhanced palladium catalysis with single-molecule fluorescence microscopy

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have been proved effective not only in catalyzing chemical reactions, but also in improving the activity of non-plasmonic photocatalysts. It is essential to reveal the synergy between the plasmonic structure and the non-plasmonic metal photocatalyst for expounding the underlying mechanism of plasmon-enhanced catalysis. Herein, the enhancement of resazurin reduction at the heterostructure of silver nanowire (AgNW) and palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) is observed in situ by single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. The catalysis mapping results around single AgNW suggest that the catalytic activity of PdNPs is enhanced for ∼ 20 times due to the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the vicinity of the AgNW. This catalysis enhancement is also highly related to the wavelength and polarization of the excitation light. In addition, the palladium catalysis is further enhanced by ∼ 10 times in the vicinity of a roughened AgNW or a AgNW-AgNW nanogap because of the improvement of catalytic hotspots. These findings clarify the contribution of plasmon excitation in palladium catalysis at microscopic scale, which will help to deepen the understanding of the plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis and provide a guideline for developing highly efficient plasmon-based photocatalysts.
