Abstract:We study the problem of finding the resistors in a resistor network from measurements of the power dissipated by the resistors under different loads. We give sufficient conditions for local uniqueness, i.e. conditions that guarantee that the linearization of this non-linear inverse problem admits a unique solution. Our method is inspired by a method to study local uniqueness of inverse problems with internal functionals in the continuum, where the inverse problem is reformulated as a redundant system of differential equations. We use our method to derive local uniqueness conditions for other discrete inverse problems with internal functionals including a discrete analogue of the inverse Schrödinger problem and problems where the resistors are replaced by impedances and dissipated power at the zero and a positive frequency are available. Moreover, we show that the dissipated power measurements can be obtained from measurements of thermal noise induced currents.

Abstract:It is well known that experimental errors are inevitable,while if different experiment parameters are adopted,different experiment accuracies are to be derived at last,though based on the same experimental principle.An experiment that tests the equivalent parameters of a passive one-port network based on triangular voltage measurement method is put forward.By analyzing the final experimental error of this test,certain experiment strategy can be obtained as well as some effective methods to reduce the experimental error.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the recovery of multi-layer structures in inverse conductivity problem by using one measurement. First, we define the concept of Generalized Polarization Tensors (GPTs) for multi-layered medium and show some important properties of the proposed GPTs. With the help of GPTs, we present the perturbation formula for general multi-layered medium. Then we derive the perturbed electric potential for multi-layer concentric disks structure in terms of the so-called generalized polarization matrix, whose dimension is the same as the number of the layers. By delicate analysis, we derive an algebraic identity involving the geometric and material configurations of multi-layer concentric disks. This enables us to reconstruct the multi-layer structures by using only one partial-order measurement.

Experimental Investigation of Measurement Error in Networked Resistors Arrays Based on Zero Potential Method

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive study on the zero potential method for restriction of the crosstalk-based measurement error in network resistor arrays. We introduce four circuits with different architectures based on the zero potential method to comparatively study the effect of the switches on-resistance on the measurement error. Moreover, the effect of the operational amplifiers with different specifications on the measurement error will be investigated. The results show that the measurement error introduced by the onresistance of the switches can be effectively suppressed by inserting a buffer between the sensing elements and the switches on each driven electrode, and utilizing the virtual ground of the trans-impedance amplifier on each scanned electrode. We will show that, the efficiency of the circuits on elimination of the measurement error may be improved by employing high precision operational amplifiers.

Abstract:Based on the Coen inverse algorithm,the inverse determination of one-dimensional continuous conductivity profile from the measurements of apparent resistivity with Schulunberger array is studied.The inversions of presise data and noise data in different conductivity profiles,such as constant function,linear function,power function,exponential function and piecewise function,are given.Using a real field example in which the conductivity profile is determined with layered model by Inman in 1975,we compare the results between our continuous conductivity profile and Inman's and it is found that the method is valid.

Abstract:Inverse source problems for partial differential equations are of interest both in mathematics and in engineering. In this paper, we consider the problem of recovering the spatial contamination source in the diffusion model with the local measurements at fixed times. One example is constructed to show that the local measurements at one fixed time are not enough to determine the source. We propose the problem of recovering the source with the local measurements at two different fixed times. The uniqueness and conditional stability estimate are proved by the analytic continuation method.

Abstract:This paper formulates an inverse power flow problem which is to infer a nodal admittance matrix (hence the network structure of a power system) from voltage and current phasors measured at a number of buses. We show that the admittance matrix can be uniquely identified from a sequence of measurements corresponding to different steady states when every node in the system is equipped with a measurement device, and a Kron-reduced admittance matrix can be determined even if some nodes in the system are not monitored (hidden nodes). Furthermore, we propose effective algorithms based on graph theory to uncover the actual admittance matrix of radial systems with hidden nodes. We provide theoretical guarantees for the recovered admittance matrix and demonstrate that the actual admittance matrix can be fully recovered even from the Kron-reduced admittance matrix under some mild assumptions. Simulations on standard test systems confirm that these algorithms are capable of providing accurate estimates of the admittance matrix from noisy sensor data.

Topology Reconstruction of a Resistor Network with Limited Boundary Measurements: An Optimization Approach

Abstract:A problem of reconstruction of the topology and the respective edge resistance values of an unknown circular planar passive resistive network using limitedly available resistance distance measurements is considered. We develop a multistage topology reconstruction method, assuming that the number of boundary and interior nodes, the maximum and minimum edge conductance, and the Kirchhoff index are known apriori. First, a maximal circular planar electrical network consisting of edges with resistors and switches is constructed; no interior nodes are considered. A sparse difference in convex program $\mathbf{\Pi}_1$ accompanied by round down algorithm is posed to determine the switch positions. The solution gives us a topology that is then utilized to develop a heuristic method to place the interior nodes. The heuristic method consists of reformulating $\mathbf{\Pi}_1$ as a difference of convex program $\mathbf{\Pi}_2$ with relaxed edge weight constraints and the quadratic cost. The interior node placement thus obtained may lead to a non-planar topology. We then use the modified Auslander, Parter, and Goldstein algorithm to obtain a set of planar network topologies and re-optimize the edge weights by solving $\mathbf{\Pi}_3$ for each topology. Optimization problems posed are difference of convex programming problem, as a consequence of constraints triangle inequality and the Kalmansons inequality. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the proposed method.

Abstract:The backward problems of parabolic equations are of interest in the study of both mathematics and engineering. In this paper, we consider a backward problem for the one-dimensional heat conduction equation with the measurements on a discrete set. The uniqueness for recovering the initial value is proved by the analytic continuation method. We discretize this inverse problem by a finite element method to deduce a severely ill-conditioned linear system of algebra equations. In order to overcome the ill-posedness, we apply the discrete Tikhonov regularization with the generalized cross validation rule to obtain a stable numerical approximation to the initial value. Numerical results for three examples are provided to show the effect of the measurement data.

Abstract:We recently proposed in [Cheng, XL et al. A novel coupled complex boundary method for inverse source problems Inverse Problem 2014 30 055002] a coupled complex boundary method (CCBM) for inverse source problems. In this paper, we apply the CCBM to inverse conductivity problems (ICPs) with one measurement. In the ICP, the diffusion coefficient q is to be determined from both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary data. With the CCBM, q is sought such that the imaginary part of the solution of a forward Robin boundary value problem vanishes in the problem domain. This brings in advantages on robustness and computation in reconstruction. Based on the complex forward problem, the Tikhonov regularization is used for a stable reconstruction. Some theoretical analysis is given on the optimization models. Several numerical examples are provided to show the feasibility and usefulness of the CCBM for the ICP. It is illustrated that as long as all the subdomains share some portion of the boundary, our CCBM-based Tikhonov regularization method can reconstruct the diffusion parameters stably and effectively.

Abstract:This paper embodies the results of an opening experiment on circuit designed for undergraduates.The experiment is set on the failure diagnosis of power system grounding network.By setting fault nodes artificially and introducing Matlab into the programming calculation,we devise a fault diagnosis program to detect faults of resistor network with a limited number of measurable circuit nodes.The experiment contributes to enhance students′ understanding on basic theory,sharpen their practical skills,and improve their awareness of innovation.It provides reference for those courses which focus on validating experiments to open up opening experiments.

Abstract:We consider initial boundary value problems with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. Given an initial value, we establish the uniqueness in determining a spatially varying coefficient of zeroth-order term by a single measurement of Dirichlet data on an arbitrarily chosen subboundary. The uniqueness holds in a subdomain where the initial value is positive, provided that it is sufficiently smooth which is specified by decay rates of the Fourier coefficients. The key idea is the reduction to an inverse elliptic problem and relies on elliptic Carleman estimates.

Topology Reconstruction of a Class of Electrical Networks with Limited Boundary Measurements

Abstract:We consider the problem of recovering the topology and the edge conductance value, as well as characterizing a set of electrical networks that satisfy the limitedly available Thevenin impedance measurements. The measurements are obtained from an unknown electrical network, which is assumed to belong to a class of circular planar passive electrical network. This class of electrical networks consists of R, RL, and RC networks whose edge impedance values are equal, and the absolute value of the real and the imaginary part of the edge impedances are also equal. To solve the topology reconstruction and the set characterization problem, we establish a simple relation between Thevenin impedance and the Laplacian matrix and leverage this relation to get a system of multivariate polynomial equations, whose solution is a set of all electrical networks satisfying the limited available Thevenin's impedance measurements. To confine the search space and generate valid electrical networks, we impose the triangle and Kalmanson's inequality as constraints. The solution to a constrained system of multivariate polynomial equations is a set of reconstructed valid electrical networks. For simple algorithmic solutions, we use Gröbner basis polynomials. This paper shows that the triangle and the Kalmanson's inequality holds for general circular planar passive R, RL, and RC electrical networks if certain boundary conditions lie within a convex cone. Numerical examples illustrate the developed topology reconstruction method.

Abstract:We introduce a computer-assisted proof for uniqueness and global reconstruction for the inverse Robin transmission problem, where the corrosion function on the boundary of an interior object is to be determined from current-voltage measurements on the boundary of an outer domain. We consider the shunt electrode model where, in contrast to the standard Neumann boundary condition, the applied electrical current is only partially known. The aim is to determine the corrosion coefficient with a finite number of measurements. In this paper, we present a numerically verifiable criterion that ensures unique solvability of the inverse problem, given a desired resolution. This allows us to explicitly determine the required number and position of the required electrodes. Furthermore, we will present an error estimate for noisy data. By rewriting the problem as a convex optimisation problem, our aim is to develop a globally convergent reconstruction algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the monodomain model of cardiac electrophysiology. After an analysis of the well-posedness of the forward problem, we show that perfectly insulating regions (modeling ischemic regions in the cardiac tissue) can be uniquely determined by partial boundary measurements of the potential.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the inverse problem of determining the potential of the Schrodinger equation from finite measurements on the boundary. It is well known that this is an ill posed problem in the sense of Hadamard. The stability estimate is proved under the assumption that the potentials have some a priori constraints. Based on this conditional stability result, we propose one kind of Tikhonov regularization and prove the convergence rate for the regularized solution.
