Abstract:Objective:To study the therapeutic effects of combined treatment with Chinese and western medicine in children with cerebral palsy(CP).Methods:104 CP children were treated mainly with physiotherapy and acupuncture,together with occupational therapy,sensory integration and electrical stimulation.Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) was used to assess the effects of treatment.Results:After treatment for 3.29±0.80 months,the majority of CP children improved their IQ and limb symptoms,with decreased abnormal posture,increased muscle strength and improved motor developmental function.GMFM88 and GMFM66 scores were increased significantly after treatment.Conclusion:Combined treatment with Chinese and Western Medicine has synergic effects on CP children.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess therapeutic effect of combined treatment of Chinese medicine and western medicine on optic atrophy complicated by cerebral palsy.METHODS:One hundred and seventeen cases were divided into an observation group (n = 79) and a control group (n = 38). The control group were treated with routine western medicine treatment including neurotrophic drugs and high pressure oxygen, etc. and the observation group with acupuncture at Ganshu (BL 18), Pishu (BL 20), Chengqi (ST 1), etc. and injection of 0.2-0.3 mL Compound Danshen Injectio into Qiuhou (EX-HN 7), on the basis of the same treatment of western medicine as that in the control group. Fundus examination and the tracing body angle detection were conducted before and after treatment and the therapeutic effects were assessed in the two groups.RESULTS:The total effective rate was 91.1% in the observation group and 60.5% in the control group with a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001); after treatment the angle of tracing body significantly increased in the two groups (P < 0.01) with the observation group better than the control group (P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:The combined treatment of Chinese medicine and western medicine is an effective therapy for optic atrophy complicated by cerebral palsy.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo assess the clinic therapy effect of traditional medicine vapor bath with function training treatment in spastic cerebral palsy(CP) children.Methods82 cases were divided into two groups.The treatment group of 39 cases applied traditional medicine vapor bath with function training treatment,and the control group of 43 cases applied function training treatment mainly.The estimate of muscle tension adopted the modified Ashworth scale.The estimate of gross motor adopted the gross motor developmental quotient of Gesell development schedules.ResultsThere was significant difference of the muscle tension and the gross motor developmental quotient between the two groups after treatment(P<0.05).ConclusionTraditional medicine vapor bath with function training treatment can depress the muscle tension of spastic CP children,obviously improve the motor ability,and raise the life quality of them.

Abstract:Objective:To retrospectively analyze 800 children diagnosed as cerebral palsy in the last 5 years , so as to explore the new ideas of treatment of children with cerebral palsy. Methods:Combined with the de-velopment track of the "brain governing mind" theory of traditional Chinese medicine,the syndrome,efficacy and the influence of gender,age on the efficacy of the 800 children with cerebral palsy was retrospectively studied. The main drug was Nao Kang Ling for oral administration. Results:It was found that the brain re-suscitation,relaxing tendons and activting collaterals method can make the curative rate in the treatment of infantile cerebral palsy reach to 95%. Gender had rare influence on the curative efficacy ,but the age had obvious influence on the curative efficacy. The younger the better. Conclusion:The brain resuscitation ,relax-ing tendons and activating collaterals method under the guidance of the theory of "brain governing mind",for children with cerebral palsy is worth clinical promotion.

Abstract:Objective: To quantify the effect of motor-developmental Tuina therapy on 61 children with cerebral palsy. Methods: All the children received the motor-developmental Tuina therapy for 20 min each time, 3 to 6 times per week. The gross motor functions of the children were evaluated by GMFM 66. The baseline period evaluations in 15 children and follow-up period evaluations in 26 children were performed. Results: GMFM 66 score significantly increased at the end of treatment period (P<0.001). The GMFM 66 score changes per month in treatment period was significantly greater than those of both baseline period and follow-up period (P<0.001). Conclusion: The effect of motor-developmental Tuina therapy was notable on children with cerebral palsy. Continuous progress of the gross motor functions in these children may be obtained by continuous therapy.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect of warm-reinforcing needling combined with modern rehabilitation training for infant cerebral palsy (CP).METHODSForty cases of cerebral palsy children were randomly divided into rehabilitation (Rehab, n=19) and acupuncture (Acup) + Rehab (n=21) groups. Body acupoints used were Baihui (GV 20), Zusanli (ST 36), Quchi (LI 11), Huantiao (GB 30), Yinlingquan (GB 34), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), etc., and scalp-acupoints Zhisanzhen (the cross-point between the anterior hairline and the median line of the head, 3 cun bilateral to the crossing point), Naosanzhen [Nao-hu (GV 17), 1.5 cun bilateral to GV17], Balance Zone, Motor Zone, etc. . The treatment was conducted once every other day, with 3 months being a therapeutic course, 2 courses altogether. Rehabilitation training included physical training (PT), occupational therapy (OT) training, and speech training (ST), 5 times a week, with 3 months being a therapeutic course, 2 courses altogether. Gross motor function measure (GMFM) and comprehensive function (CF, including cognition, speech, motor, self-care and social-adaptable abilities) were evaluated.RESULTSAfter the treatment, of the 19 and 21 cases in Rehab and Acup+ Rehab groups, 12 (63.16%) and 18 (85.71%) experienced marked improvement, 7 (36.84%) and 3 (14.29%) failed, with the effective rates being 63.16% and 85.71% respectively. The therapeutic effect of Acup+ Rehab group was markedly superior to that of Rehab group (P < 0.05). Self-comparison of two groups showed that the scores of CF and GMFM increased significantly in comparison with pre-treatment (P < 0.01), and the scores of F and GMFM of Acup + Rehab group were obviously higher than those of Rehab group (P < 0.01).CONCLUSIONRehabilitation training combined with acupuncture can apparently improve CP children's motor and comprehensive functions, and the therapeutic effect of AcupWarm-reinf Rehab is evidently superior to that of simple rehabilitation training therapy.

Abstract:Objective TodiscusstheclinicaleffectivetherapeuticmethodofintegratedChineseand westernmedicineforspasticcerebralpalsy.Methods Onehundredandtwentychildrenwererandomizedin-to a treatment group and a control group,60 cases in each one.In the control group,the conventional rehabili-tation was applied after the selective posterior rhizotomy(SPR).In the treatment group,on the basic treatment as the control group,the local herbal steaming bathing therapy was given in the lower limbs.The gross motor function and the different value before and after treatment were evaluated in the two groups.The overall effi-cacywascomparedbetweenthetwogroups.Results Thetotaleffectiveratewas96.67%inthetreatment group and was 86.67% in the control group,indicating the significant difference in comparison(P<0.05). In the self-comparison,the difference in the gross motor function evaluation was significant(P<0.05,P<0.01);after treatment,in comparison between the two groups,the value in the treatment was better than that in the control group(P<0.05).In comparison of the value difference before and after evaluation,the result inthetreatmentgroupwasbetterthanthatinthecontrolgroup(P<0.01).Conclusion Thelumbosacral SPR combined with local herbal steaming and bathing therapy effectively reduces muscle tone and improves motor function in the patients of spastic cerebral palsy and deserves to be promoted in clinic.
Effects of traditional Chinese medicine combined with modern rehabilitation therapies on motor function in children with cerebral palsy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has considerable experience in the treatment of cerebral palsy (CP), but little evidence shows the effect of a combination of TCM and modern rehabilitation therapies on CP. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of integrated TCM and modern rehabilitation therapies on motor development in children with CP. Methods: We systematically searched five databases up to June 2022, including PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science. Gross motor function measure (GMFM) and Peabody Development Motor Scales-II were the primary outcomes to evaluate motor development. Secondary outcomes included the joint range of motion, the Modified Ashworth scale (MAS), the Berg balance scale, and Activities of Daily living (ADL). Weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to determine intergroup differences. Results: A total of 2,211 participants from 22 trials were enrolled in this study. Among these, one study was at a low risk of bias and seven studies showed a high risk of bias. Significant improvements were found in GMFM-66 (WMD 9.33; 95% CI 0.14–18.52, P < 0.05, I 2 = 92.1%), GMFM-88 (WMD 8.24; 95% CI 3.25–13.24, P < 0.01, I 2 = 0.0%), Berg balance scale (WMD 4.42; 95% CI 1.21–7.63, P < 0.01, I 2 = 96.7%), and ADL (WMD 3.78; 95% CI 2.12–5.43, P < 0.01, I 2 = 58.8%). No adverse events were reported during the TCM intervention in the included studies. The quality of evidence was high to low. Conclusion: Integrated TCM and modern rehabilitation therapies may be an effective and safe intervention protocol to improve gross motor function, muscle tone, and the functional independence of children with CP. However, our results should be interpreted carefully because of the heterogeneity between the included studies. Abstract:ObjectiveTo observe the clinical efficacy of Governor Vessel-unblocking and brain-refreshing scalp acupuncture for cerebral palsy (CP) complicated with intellectual disabilities.MethodsA total of 300 CP cases aged between 1 and 5 years were randomly allocated into a treatment group (n=150) and a control group (n=150). Patients in the treatment group were treated with Governor Vessel-unblocking and brainrefreshing scalp acupuncture combined with rehabilitation training, whereas patients in the control group received rehabilitation training alone. The Beijing Gesell developmental (Gesell) scale and gross motor function measure (GMFM) scale were used to assess the motor and intellectual development before and 3 months after the treatment. In addition, the head CT/MRI examination was applied to assess the brain nerve repair before and after the treatment.ResultsAfter the treatment, the total effective rate in the treatment group was 78.0%, versus 42.7% in the control group, showing a statistical significance (P<0.05). As for scores of five subscales in the Gesell scale, there were significant intra-group differences in the treatment group (all P<0.05); and the scores in the treatment group were significantly better than those in the control group (all P<0.05). As for scores of five dimensions in GMFM scale, there were significant intra-group differences in the treatment group (all P<0.05); and the scores in the treatment group were significantly better than those in the control group (all P<0.05). According to the head CT/MRI findings, the total effective rate was 73.3% in the treatment group, versus 62.0% in the control group, showing a statistical significance (P<0.05).ConclusionWhen used in combination with rehabilitative training, Governor Vessel-unblocking and brain-refreshing scalp acupuncture can significantly improve the clinical efficacy for cerebral palsy complicated with intellectual disabilities. It can also improve the patients’ motor function, intelligence and language ability.

Exploration for pathogenic factors and diagnosis of cerebral palsy in children

Abstract:To explore the pathogenic factors and diagnosi s of cerebral palsy (CP) in children, perinatal history, clinical evaluation, im aging and electrophysiological data and parents' attitude for rehabilitation of CP were analyzed and investigated in 50 children with CP retrospectively. The re sults showed that prem ature birth, low birth weight and perinatal asphyxia were the most pathogenic fa ctors induced CP. The common CP types was spastic paralysis, in particular quadr iparesis. Abnormal CT and MRI findings were detected in 68% of CP children. It w as noticed that 44% of CP children were with speech and language disorder, 32% w i th mental retardation, 18% with hearing impairment, 16% with visual impairment a nd 16% with epilepsy. There were 86% parents to accept with physiotherapy on the ir CP children, 68% with acupuncture therapy, 46% with occupational therapy and 100% with speech therapy, respectively. It is suggested that multi-subjec t cooperation will be necessary for the follow-up study of the high- risk infants. The realization of the related-speciality knowledge a nd the enhancement of rehabilitational conception will be helpful for the early diagnosis and intervention of CP patients. The popularization of rehabilitationa l conception will be also important in the parents with CP children.
Effect of "Tonifying Kidney and Invigorating Brain" acupuncture in children with spastic cerebral palsy analyzed by multi-modality MRI combined with dynamic electroencephalogram

Abstract:Introduction: Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability of childhood. Spastic cerebral palsy accounts for 60% to 70% of cases. Research has shown that acupuncture can improve the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy, but the mechanism of action remains unclear. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture for treatment of children with spastic cerebral palsy and to assess the value of multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ambulatory electroencephalogram (EEG) for evaluation of treatment effect. Methods and analysis: This randomized controlled trial will enroll a total of 72 children with CP from 2 hospitals-Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine and Nanjing State Hospital of Pediatric-with 36 participants from each hospital. Patients will be randomly assigned (1:1 ratio) to receive "Tonifying Kidney and Invigorating Brain" acupuncture treatment plus standardized physical rehabilitation treatment (treatment group) or only standardized physical rehabilitation (control group). All participants will receive 3 treatment sessions per week for 3 consecutive months; they will then be followed up for another 3 months. The primary outcome measures will include multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ambulatory electroencephalogram (EEG), and Gesell Developmental Diagnostic Schedules. The secondary outcome measures will include Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), Functional Independence Measure (WeeFIM), and Modified Ashworth Scale score. Outcome measures (including primary and secondary outcome measures) were collected at the baseline, 3 months and 6 months prior to the intervention. Ethics and dissemination Patients consent: Obtained. Ethics approval: The central independent ethics committee of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine approved the protocol (2017NL-115-02). Safety considerations: outine blood tests and liver and kidney function tests will be conducted to exclude patients with severe heart, liver, or kidney diseases. The same examinations will be performed again at the end of the study to detect any possible side effects. Possible acupuncture-related adverse events (e.g., fainting, needle stick injury, local infection, subcutaneous hematoma, and low-grade fever) will be documented. Serious adverse events will be reported to the principal investigator immediately. All unexpected and unintended responses, even those not necessarily related to the acupuncture intervention, will be documented as adverse events. Case dropout management: articipants have a right to withdraw from the study at any time if they feel uncomfortable upon receiving the treatments or being diagnosed with serious complications or diseases. They will then be referred to the preferred department for further treatment and management. If cases of dropout, the researcher need to contact the participant to reason the problem out, collect and record all the necessary assessments on the last visit as well as the date of last visit. All data available until the date of withdrawal will be stored for further statistical analysis. Discussion: This research is being conducted to assess the value of acupuncture as an intervention for rehabilitation of children with spastic cerebral palsy and also to evaluate the usefulness of multimodal MRI and ambulatory EEG for identifying changes in brain function.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the therapeutic effect of acupuncture for spastic cerebral palsy in infancy stage. METHODS:A total of 62 children with spastic cerebral palsy were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 31 cases in each one. Both groups were given comprehensive rehabilitation therapy (sport therapy, electronic biofeedback therapy, speech cognitive training, massage therapy). On the basis of comprehensive rehabilitation therapy, the acupuncture group was treated with acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20), Sishencong (EX-HN1), motor area, Jiaji (EX-B 2), Weizhong (BL 40), Xuanzhong (GB 39), Zusanli (ST 36) and Hegu (LI 4), etc, the needles were retained for 15-20 min each time, once a day, 5 days a week, 45 days as a course with 10 days interval, a total of 3 courses were required. The Gesell development scale adaptive DQ scores, gross motor function measure (GMFM88) and muscular tension of adductor and gastrocnemius muscle were compared before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS:The Gesell development scale adaptive DQ score after treatment in the observation group was increased (P<0.05), there was no significant difference before and after treatment in the control group (P>0.05), the change of the observation group was larger than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the GMFM88 scores in the two groups were significantly increased (P<0.05), the change of the observation group was larger than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the muscular tension of the adductor in the two groups were decreased (P<0.05), the change of the observation group was larger than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the muscle tension of the gastrocnemius muscle in the two groups were decreased (P<0.05), there was no significant difference between the two groups in the variation range (P>0.05). CONCLUSION:Acupuncture combined with comprehensive rehabilitation therapy can improve cognitive function, spasticity and motor function of children with spastic cerebral palsy.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of spine-manipulating therapy for cervical spondylotic non-myelopathy.Methods: One hundred subjects were randomized by controlled single-blind clinical trial into treatment group(n=50) and control group(n=50),and treated respectively by spine-manipulating therapy and conventional massage,with a course of two months.Results: After treatment,the scores of Chinese medicine symptoms were significantly reduced(P<0.01) in both groups,and they reduced more significantly in treatment group than in control group(P<0.01).Conclusion: Spine-manipulating therapy has positive effects on cervical spondylotic non-myelopathy.
Clinical Observations on the Effect of Scalp Acupuncture on Gross Motor Function in Cerebral Palsy Children

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of an individual acupuncture protocol,based on brain function location and standardized syndrome differentiation in traditional Chinese medicine,on gross motor function in cerebral palsy children and seek a new organic way of combining acupuncture and rehabilitation techniques.Methods Seventy-four cerebral palsy children were randomly allocated to a treatment group of 37 cases and a control group of 37 cases.The treatment group received an individual acupuncture protocol plus rehabilitation training and the control group,Jin’(sixteen brain-reinforcing points) acupuncture protocol plus rehabilitation training.Acupuncture and rehabilitation training were given once every other day and once daily,respectively,for three months in both groups.Gross motor function was assessed using the GMFM-66 score before and after(each month) treatment to examine the dynamic change.Results The GMFM-66 score increased significantly in both groups of patients after treatment(P 0.01).There was no statistically significant difference in post-treatment GMFM score increment between the two groups(P0.05).There was no interaction between the therapeutic protocol and time(P0.05).The GMFM score increased more in spastic cerebral palsy children of the treatment group than in those of the control group(P0.05).Conclusion Scalp acupuncture treatment plus rehabilitation training produces a positive effect on gross motor function in cerebral palsy children.Individual acupuncture treatment is superior to sixteen brain-reinforcing points in improving gross motor function in children with spastic cerebral palsy.

Abstract:To observe the therapeutic effectiveness of multiple sclerosis treated with combination of TCM and WM,73 cases of multiple sclerosis were divided randomly into two groups-the treatment group and the control group.On the basis of routine treatment of western medicine,38 cases of the treatment group were treated according to the differentiation of symptoms and signs of TCM.35 cases of the control group were only given the pure routine treatment of WM.The results show that the treatment group was obviously superior to the control group in completely remittence and markedly effectiveness( P 0.05),which indicates treating multiple sclerosis with combination of TCM and WM can improve the clinical curative effect.

Abstract:Objective To observe the curative effect of the therapy integrated Chinese and western(medicine) on hemiplegia induced by cerebral vascular disease(CVD).Methods To divide randomly 177 cases of hemiplegia induced by CVD into two groups.The treatment group(n=119) was treated with(Chinese) herbal drugs,acupuncture,massage,fuming-washing therapy and rehabilitation.The control group(n=58) was treated with rehabilitation only.The curative effects in two groups were evaluated by Ashworth Scale of Spasm,Fugl-meyer Assessment(FMA) and Barthel Index(BI).Results The total effective rate of arm spasm relief in the treatment group was 49.6% and had a significant difference(compared) with the control group(P0.05).The leg spasm,motion function and daily life ability were(relieved) or improved but without significant difference(P0.05).Conclusion The therapy integrated Chinese and western medicine can relieve effectively the hemiplegia and spasm induced by CVD and(improve) the recovery of motion function.

Abstract:Objective To preliminarily investigate the effectiveness of a family rehabilitation treatment model of combining medicine with education in promotion of motor function in children with severe cerebral palsy .Methods A treatment plan for 3 chil-dren (2 males and one female ) with severe cerebral palsy was made by physiatrician ,physical therapist and special education teacher after periodic assessment .Their parents and special education teachers received guidance and training to perform a family education .All of the children were assessed with Gross Motor Function Measure ( GMFM) and Fine Motor Function Measure ( FMFM) before and af-ter 6 months treatment.Results The total scores of GMFM-66,FMFM and each dimension score of GMFM-88 were improved in all children after 6 months treatment when compared to treatment before .Conclusion The combining medicine with education model can effectively improve the recovery of gross and fine motor function in children with cerebral palsy .

Abstract:Objective:To observe the clinical curative effect of acupucture to treat cerebral palsy salivation.Methods:45 cases of cerebral palsy salivation were randomly divided into two groups.The acupucture methods and the general rehabilitation methods were used in the study.The TDS was used to evaluate the curative effect before and after treatment.Results:There was a significant difference between the acupuncture and general rehabilitation treatment(P<0.05).Conclusion:The method of the acupucture has a function to raise the curative effect to treat cerebral palsy salivation.

Abstract:Purpose: To observe the clinical therapcutic effect in the treatment of infantile persisting diarrhea with the spine-pinching manipulation plus moxibustion.Methods: 110 cases of the sick children were randomly divided into 68 cases in the treatment group and 42 cases in the control group for comparative observation. The treatment group was treated by the spine-pinching manipulation and the control group was given the expectant treatment of western medicine.Results: The total effective rates were 97.0% and 81.0% in the treatment group and control group respectively, and the therapeutic effect in the treatment was better group than in the control group (P<0.01).Conclusion: The treatment of infantile persisting diarrhea by the spine-pinching manipulation plus moxibustion could remarkably enhance the therapeutic effect and shorten the courses of the treatment.
