Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:This paper deals with superminimal surfaces in complex space forms by using theFrenet framing. We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper we study volumes of moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic, cusp and cone boundary components. We compute the volumes in some new cases, in particular when there exists a large cone angle. This allows us to give geometric meaning to Mirzakhani's polynomials under substitution of imaginary valued boundary lengths, corresponding to hyperbolic cone angles, and to study the behaviour of the volume under the $2\pi$ limit of a cone angle.

Abstract:Every finite collection of oriented closed geodesics in the modular surface has a canonically associated link in its unit tangent bundle coming from the periodic orbits of the geodesic flow. We study the volume of the associated link complement with respect to its unique complete hyperbolic metric. We provide the first lower volume bound that is linear in terms of the number of distinct exponents in the code words corresponding to the collection of closed geodesics.

A flat perspective on moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:Volumes of moduli spaces of hyperbolic cone surfaces were previously defined and computed when the angles of the cone singularities are at most 2pi. We propose a general definition of these volumes without restriction on the angles. This construction is based on flat geometry as our proposed volume is a limit of Masur-Veech volumes of moduli spaces of multi-differentials. This idea generalizes the observation in quantum gravity that the Jackiw-Teitelboim partition function is a limit of minimal string partition functions from Liouville gravity. Finally, we use the properties of these volumes to recover Mirzakhani's recursion formula for Weil-Petersson polynomials. This provides a new proof of Witten-Kontsevich's theorem.

Abstract:It is a theorem of Casson and Rivin that the complete hyperbolic metric on a cusp end ideal triangulated 3-manifold maximizes volume in the space of all positive angle structures. We show that the conclusion still holds if some of the tetrahedra in the complete metric are flat.

Abstract:We prove that in a closed manifold of dimension between 3 and 7 with a bumpy metric, the min-max minimal hypersurfaces associated with the volume spectrum introduced by Gromov, Guth, Marques-Neves, are two-sided and have multiplicity one. This confirms a conjecture by Marques-Neves.

Abstract:We consider a volume maximization program to construct hyperbolic structures on triangulated 3-manifolds, for which previous progress has lead to consider angle assignments which do not correspond to a hyperbolic metric on each simplex. We show that critical points of the generalized volume are associated to geometric structures modeled on the extended hyperbolic space the natural extension of hyperbolic space by the de Sitter space except for the degenerate case where all simplices are Euclidean in a generalized sense.Those extended hyperbolic structures can realize geometrically a decomposition of the manifold as the connected sum of components admitting a complete hyperbolic metric, along embedded spheres (or projective planes) which are totally geodesic space-like surfaces in the de Sitter part of the extended hyperbolic structure.

In another application, we show that up to some power of , the volume of the moduli spaces of flat metrics on the sphere with prescribed cone angles is a continuous piecewise polynomial with rational coefficients function of the angles, provided none of the angles is an integral multiple of . This generalizes the results of Koziarz and Nguyen (Ann Sci l'Éc Normale Supér 51(6):1549–1597, 2018) and McMullen (Am J Math 139(1):261–291, 2017).

Abstract:Normal complexes are orthogonal truncations of simplicial fans. In this paper, we develop the study of mixed volumes for normal complexes. Our main result is a sufficiency condition that ensures when the mixed volumes of normal complexes associated to a given fan satisfy the Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities. By specializing to Bergman fans of matroids, we give a new proof of the Heron–Rota–Welsh Conjecture as a consequence of the Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities for normal complexes.

On trace set of hyperbolic surfaces and a conjecture of Sarnak and Schmutz

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the trace set of a Fuchsian lattice. There are two results of this paper: the first is that for a non-uniform lattice, we prove Scmutz's conjecture: the trace set of a Fuchsian lattice exhibits linear growth if and only if the lattice is arithmetic. Additionally, we show that for a fixed surface group of genus bigger than 2 and any positive number $\epsilon$, te set of cocompact lattice embedding such that their growth rate of trace set exceeds $n^{2-\epsilon}$ has positive Weil-Petersson volume. We also provide an asymptotic analysis of the volume of this set.

Abstract:We show that the Gersten complex for the (improved) Milnor K-sheaf on a smooth scheme over an excellent discrete valuation ring is exact except at the first place and that exactness at the first place may be checked at the discrete valuation ring associated to the the generic point of the special fiber. This complements results of Gillet and Levine for K-theory, Geisser for motivic cohomology and Schmidt and Strunk and the author for étale cohomology.

On unbalanced difference bodies and Godbersen's conjecture

Abstract:The longstanding Godbersen's conjecture states that for any convex body $K \subset \mathbb R^n$ of volume $1$ and any $j \in \{0, \ldots, n\}$, the mixed volume $V_j = V(K[j], -K[n - j])$ is bounded by $\binom{n}{j}$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a simplex. We demonstrate that several consequences of this conjecture are true: certain families of linear combinations of the $V_j$, arising from different geometric constructions, are bounded above by their values when one substitutes $\binom{n}{j}$ for $V_j$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a simplex. One of our results implies that for any $K$ of volume $1$ we have $\frac{1}{n + 1} \sum_{j = 0}^n \binom{n}{j}^{-1} V_j \le 1$, showing that Godbersen's conjecture holds ``on average'' for any body. Another result generalizes the well-known Rogers-Shephard inequality for the difference body.

Abstract:Zonoids are Hausdorff limits of zonotopes, while zonotopes are convex polytopes defined as the Minkowski sums of finitely many segments. We present a combinatorial framework that links the study of mixed volumes of zonoids (a topic that has applications in algebraic combinatorics) with the study of the absolute value of the Grassmannian, defined as the image of the Grassmannian under the coordinate-wise absolute value map. We use polyhedral computations to derive new families of inequalities for n zonoids in dimension d, when (n,d)=(6,2) and (6,3). Unlike the classical geometric inequalities, originating from the Brunn-Minkowski and Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities, the inequalities we produce have the special feature of being Minkowski linear in each of the n zonoids they involve.

Abstract:We define a new combinatorial class of triangulations of closed 3-manifolds, satisfying a weak version of 0-efficiency combined with a weak version of minimality, and study them using twisted squares. As an application, we obtain strong restrictions on the topology of a 3-manifold from the existence of non-smooth maxima of the volume function on the space of circle-valued angle structures.

Abstract:The volume conjecture relates the quantum invariant and the hyperbolic geometry. Bonahon-Wong-Yang introduced a new version of the volume conjecture by using the intertwiners between two isomorphic irreducible representations of the skein algebra. The intertwiners are built from surface diffeomorphisms; they formulated the volume conjecture when diffeomorphisms are pseudo-Anosov. In this paper, we explicitly calculate all the intertwiners for the closed torus using an algebraic embedding from the skein algebra of the closed torus to a quantum torus, and show the limit superior related to the trace of these intertwiners is zero. Moreover, we consider the periodic diffeomorphisms for surfaces with negative Euler characteristic, and conjecture the corresponding limit is zero because the simplicial volume of the mapping tori for periodic diffeomorphisms is zero. For the once punctured torus, we make precise calculations for intertwiners and prove our conjecture.

Abstract:We propose an approach to find constant curvature metrics on triangulated closed 3-manifolds using a finite dimensional variational method whose energy function is the volume. The concept of an angle structure on a tetrahedron and on a triangulated closed 3-manifold is introduced following the work of Casson, Murakami and Rivin. It is proved by A. Kitaev and the author that any closed 3-manifold has a triangulation supporting an angle structure. The moduli space of all angle structures on a triangulated 3-manifold is a bounded open convex polytope in a Euclidean space. The volume of an angle structure is defined. Both the angle structure and the volume are natural generalizations of tetrahedra in the constant sectional curvature spaces and their volume. It is shown that the volume functional can be extended continuously to the compact closure of the moduli space. In particular, the maximum point of the volume functional always exists in the compactification. The main result shows that for a 1-vertex triangulation of a closed 3-manifold if the volume function on the moduli space has a local maximum point, then either the manifold admits a constant curvature Riemannian metric or the manifold contains a non-separating 2-sphere or real projective plane.
