Abstract:Nonlinear stability is analysed for stationary solutions of incompressible inviscid stratified fluid flow in two and three dimensions. Both the Euler equations and their Boussinesq approximations are treated. The techniques used were initiated by Arnold around 1965. These techniques combine energy methods, conserved quantities and convexity estimates. The resulting nonlinear stability criteria involve standard quantities, such as the Richardson number, but they differ from the linearized stability criteria. For example, the full three-dimensional problem has nonlinearly stable stationary solutions with Richardson number greater than unity, provided the gradients of the variations in density satisfy explicitly given bounds. Specific examples and the associated Hamiltonian structures for the problems are given.
On Arnol'd's second nonlinear stability theorem for two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic flow

Abstract:Arnol'd's second hydrodynamical stability theorem, proven originally for the two-dimensional Euler equations, can establish nonlinear stability of steady flows that are maxima of a suitably chosen energy-Casimir invariant. The usual derivations of this theorem require an assumption of zero disturbance circulation. In the present work an analogue of Arnol'd's second theorem is developed in the more general case of two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic flow, with the important feature that the disturbances are allowed to have non-zero circulation. New nonlinear stability criteria are derived, and explicit bounds are obtained on both the disturbance energy and potential enstrophy which are expressed in terms of the initial disturbance fields. While Arnol'd's stability method relies on the second variation of the energy-Casimir invariant being sign-definite, the new criteria can be applied to cases where the second variation is sign-indefinite because of the disturbance circulations. A version of Andrew's theorem is also established for this problem. The case of uniform potential vorticity flow is not treatable using Arnol'd's theorems. Nevertheless, using the inequalities developed in this paper, uniform potential vorticity flow is shown to be nonlinearly stable.

Abstract:The Liapunov method for establishing stability has been used in a variety of fluid and plasma problems. For nondissipative systems, this stability method is related to well-known energy principles. A development of the Liapunov method for Hamiltonian systems due to Arnold uses the energy plus other conserved quantities, together with second variations and convexity estimates, to establish stability. For Hamiltonian systems, a useful class of these conserved quantities consists of the Casimir functionals, which Poisson-commute with all functionals of the given dynamical variables. Such conserved quantities, when added to the energy, help to provide convexity estimates bounding the growth of perturbations. These estimates enable one to prove nonlinear stability, whereas the commonly used second variation or spectral arguments only prove linearized stability. When combined with recent advances in the Hamiltonian structure of fluid and plasma systems, this convexity method proves to be widely and easily applicable. This paper obtains new nonlinear stability criteria for equilibria for MHD, multifluid plasmas and the Maxwell-Vlasov equations in two and three dimensions. Related systems, such as multilayer quasigeostrophic flow, adiabatic flow and the Poisson-Vlasov equation are also treated. Other related systems, such as stratified flow and reduced magnetohydrodynamic equilibria are mentioned where appropriate, but are treated in detail in other publications.

Abstract:With use of a method of Arnol'd, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the formal stability of a parallel shear flow in a three-dimensional stratified fluid. When the local Richardson number defined with respect to density variations is everywhere greater than unity, the equilibrium is formally stable under nonlinear pertrubations. The essential physical content of the nonlinear stability result is that the total energy acts as a "potential well" for deformations of the fluid across constant density surfaces; this well is required to have definite curvature to assure stability under these deformations.

Abstract:A more restrictively general stability criterion of two-dimensional inviscid parallel flow is obtained analytically. First, a sufficient criterion for stability is found as either $-\mu_1<\frac{U''}{U-U_s}<0$ or $0<\frac{U''}{U-U_s}$ in the flow, where $U_s$ is the velocity at inflection point, $\mu_1$ is the eigenvalue of Poincaré's problem. Second, this criterion is generalized to barotropic geophysical flows in $\beta$ plane. Based on the criteria, the flows are are divided into different categories of stable flows, which may simplify the further investigations. And the connections between present criteria and Arnol'd's nonlinear criteria are discussed. These results extend the former criteria obtained by Rayleigh, Tollmien and Fj{\o}rtoft and would intrigue future research on the mechanism of hydrodynamic instability.
On Arnold-type stability theorems for the Euler equation on a sphere

Abstract:In this paper, we establish three Arnold-type stability theorems for steady or rotating solutions of the incompressible Euler equation on a sphere. Specifically, we prove that if the stream function of a flow solves a semilinear elliptic equation with a monotone nonlinearity, then, under appropriate conditions, the flow is stable or orbitally stable in the Lyapunov sense. In particular, our theorems apply to degree-2 Rossby-Haurwitz waves. These results are achieved via a variational approach, with the key ingredient being to show that the flows under consideration satisfy the conditions of two Burton-type stability criteria which are established in this paper. As byproducts, we obtain some sharp rigidity results for solutions of semilinear elliptic equations on a sphere.

Quantitative Hydrodynamic Stability for Couette Flow on Unbounded Domains with Navier Boundary Conditions

Abstract:We prove a stability threshold theorem for 2D Navier-Stokes on three unbounded domains: the whole plane $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}$, the half plane $\mathbb{R} \times [0,\infty)$ with Navier boundary conditions, and the infinite channel $\mathbb{R} \times [-1, 1]$ with Navier boundary conditions. Starting with the Couette shear flow, we consider initial perturbations $\omega_{in}$ which are of size $\nu^{1/2}(1+\ln(1/\nu)^{1/2})^{-1}$ in an anisotropic Sobolev space with an additional low frequency control condition for the planar cases. We then demonstrate that such perturbations exhibit inviscid damping of the velocity, as well as enhanced dissipation at $x$-frequencies $|k| \gg \nu$ with decay time-scale $O(\nu^{-1/3}|k|^{-2/3})$. On the plane and half-plane, we show Taylor dispersion for $x$-frequencies $|k| \ll \nu$ with decay time-scale $O(\nu |k|^{-2})$, while on the channel we show low frequency dispersion for $|k| \ll \nu$ with decay time-scale $O(\nu^{-1})$. Abstract:We study the global well-posedness and stability/instability of perturbations near a special type of hydrostatic equilibrium associated with the 2D Boussinesq equations without buoyancy (a.k.a. thermal) diffusion on a bounded domain subject to stress-free boundary conditions. The boundary of the domain is not necessarily smooth and may have corners such as in the case of rectangles. We achieve three goals. First, we establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of large-amplitude classical solutions. Efforts are made to reduce the regularity assumptions on the initial data. Second, we obtain the large-time asymptotics of the full nonlinear perturbation. In particular, we show that the kinetic energy and the first order derivatives of the velocity field converge to zero as time goes to infinity, regardless of the magnitude of the initial data, and the flow stratifies in the vertical direction in a weak topology. Third, we prove the linear stability of the hydrostatic equilibrium T(y) satisfying T′(y)=α>0, and the linear instability of periodic perturbations when T′(y)=α<0. Numerical simulations are supplemented to corroborate the analytical results and predict some phenomena that are not proved.
On the stability of parallel flow in a vertical porous layer with annular cross-section

Abstract:The linear stability of buoyant parallel flow in a vertical porous layer with an annular cross-section is investigated. The vertical cylindrical boundaries are kept at different uniform temperatures and they are assumed to be impermeable. The emergence of linear instability by convection cells is excluded on the basis of a numerical solution of the linearised governing equations. This result extends to the annular geometry the well-known Gill's theorem regarding the impossibility of convective instability in a vertical porous plane slab whose boundaries are impermeable and isothermal with different temperatures. The extension of Gill's theorem to the annular domain is approached numerically by evaluating the growth rate of normal mode perturbations and showing that its sign is negative, which means asymptotic stability of the basic flow. A concurring argument supporting the absence of linear instability arises from the investigation of cases where the impermeability condition at the vertical boundaries is relaxed and a partial permeability is modelled through Robin boundary conditions for the pressure. With partially permeable boundaries, an instability emerges which takes the form of axisymmetric normal modes.

Barotropic instability of shear flows

Abstract:We consider barotropic instability of shear flows for incompressible fluids with Coriolis effects. For a class of shear flows, we develop a new method to find the sharp stability conditions. We study the flow with Sinus profile in details and obtain the sharp stability boundary in the whole parameter space, which corrects previous results in the fluid literature. Our new results are confirmed by more accurate numerical computation. The addition of the Coriolis force is found to bring fundamental changes to the stability of shear flows. Moreover, we study dynamical behaviors near the shear flows, including the bifurcation of nontrivial traveling wave solutions and the linear inviscid damping. The first ingredient of our proof is a careful classification of the neutral modes. The second one is to write the linearized fluid equation in a Hamiltonian form and then use an instability index theory for general Hamiltonian PDEs. The last one is to study the singular and non-resonant neutral modes using Sturm-Liouville theory and hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:Abstract We are interested in the stability analysis of two-dimensional incompressible inviscid fluids. Specifically, we revisit a known recent result on the stability of Yudovich’s solutions to the incompressible Euler equations in $L^{\infty }([0,T];H^{1})$ by providing a new approach to its proof based on the idea of compactness extrapolation and by extending it to the whole plane. This new method of proof is robust and, when applied to viscous models, leads to a remarkable logarithmic improvement on the rate of convergence in the vanishing viscosity limit of two-dimensional fluids. Loosely speaking, this logarithmic gain is the result of the fact that, in appropriate high-regularity settings, the smoothness of solutions to the Euler equations at times $t\in [0,T)$ is strictly higher than their regularity at time $t=T$. This “memory effect” seems to be a general principle that is not exclusive to fluid mechanics. It is therefore likely to be observed in other setting and deserves further investigation. Finally, we also apply the stability results on Euler systems to the study of two-dimensional ideal plasmas and establish their convergence, in strong topologies, to solutions of magnetohydrodynamic systems, when the speed of light tends to infinity. The crux of this asymptotic analysis relies on a fine understanding of Maxwell’s system.

Abstract:Verifying nonlinear stability of a laminar fluid flow against all perturbations is a central challenge in fluid dynamics. Past results rely on monotonic decrease of a perturbation energy or a similar quadratic generalized energy. None show stability for the many flows that seem to be stable despite these energies growing transiently. Here a broadly applicable method to verify global stability of such flows is presented. It uses polynomial optimization computations to construct nonquadratic Lyapunov functions that decrease monotonically. The method is used to verify global stability of 2D plane Couette flow at Reynolds numbers above the the energy stability threshold found by Orr in 1907 [The stability or instability of the steady motions of a perfect liquid and of a viscous liquid. Part II: A viscous liquid, Proc. R. Ir. Acad. Sect. A 27, 69 (1907)]. This is the first global stability result for any flow that surpasses the energy method.

Abstract:A specialized mesh-free radial basis function-based finite difference (RBF-FD) discretization is used to solve the large eigenvalue problems arising in hydrodynamic stability analyses of flows in complex domains. Polyharmonic spline functions with polynomial augmentation (PHS+poly) are used to construct the discrete linearized incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes operators on scattered nodes. Rigorous global and local eigenvalue stability studies of these global operators and their constituent RBF stencils provide a set of parameters that guarantee stability without the need for hyperviscosity or other ad hoc regularizations, while balancing accuracy and computational efficiency. Specialized elliptical stencils to compute boundary-normal derivatives are introduced, and the treatment of reflectional and rotational symmetries is discussed. In particular, treating the pole singularity in cylindrical coordinates permits dimensionality reduction from 3D to 2D in rotational flows like jets. The numerical framework is demonstrated and validated on several hydrodynamic stability methods ranging from classical linear theory of laminar flows to state-of-the-art non-modal approaches that are applicable to turbulent mean flows. The examples include linear stability, resolvent, and wavemaker analyses of cylinder flow at Reynolds numbers ranging from 47 to 180, and resolvent and wavemaker analyses of the self-similar flat-plate boundary layer at a Reynolds number as well as the turbulent mean of a high-Reynolds-number transonic jet at Mach number 0.9. All previously-known results are found in close agreement with the literature. Finally, the resolvent-based wavemaker analyses of the Blasius boundary layer and turbulent jet flows offer new physical insight into the modal and non-modal growth in these flows.

Abstract:We present an energy/entropy stable and high order accurate finite difference method for solving the nonlinear (rotating) shallow water equations (SWE) in vector invariant form using the newly developed dual-pairing and dispersion-relation preserving summation-by-parts finite difference operators. We derive new well-posed boundary conditions for the SWE in one space dimension, formulated in terms of fluxes and applicable to linear and nonlinear SWEs. For the nonlinear SWE, entropy stability ensures the boundedness of numerical solution but does not guarantee convergence. Adequate amount of numerical dissipation is necessary to control high frequency errors which could negatively impact accuracy in the numerical simulations. Using the dual-pairing summation by parts framework, we derive high order accurate and nonlinear hyper-viscosity operator which dissipates entropy and enstrophy. The hyper-viscosity operator effectively minimises oscillations from shocks and discontinuities, and eliminates high frequency grid-scale errors. The numerical method is most suitable for the simulations of subcritical flows typically observed in atmospheric and geostrophic flow problems. We prove a priori error estimates for the semi-discrete approximations of both linear and nonlinear SWE. Convergence, accuracy, and well-balanced properties are verified via the method of manufactured solutions and canonical test problems such as the dam break and lake at rest. Numerical simulations in two-dimensions are presented which include the rotating and merging vortex problem and barotropic shear instability, with fully developed turbulence.

Abstract:We present in this paper a pressure correction scheme for barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which enjoys an unconditional stability property, in the sense that the energy and maximum-principle-based a priori estimates of the continuous problem also hold for the discrete solution. The stability proof is based on two independent results for general finite volume discretizations, both interesting for their own sake: the $L^2$-stability of the discrete advection operator provided it is consistent, in some sense, with the mass balance and the estimate of the pressure work by means of the time derivative of the elastic potential. The proposed scheme is built in order to match these theoretical results, and combines a fractional-step time discretization of pressure-correction type to a space discretization associating low order non-conforming mixed finite elements and finite volumes. Numerical tests with an exact smooth solution show the convergence of the scheme.
On the stability of fully nonlinear hydraulic-fall solutions to the forced water-wave problem

Abstract:Two-dimensional free-surface flow over localised topography is examined with the emphasis on the stability of hydraulic-fall solutions. A Gaussian topography profile is assumed with a positive or negative amplitude modelling a bump or a dip, respectively. Steady hydraulic-fall solutions to the full incompressible, irrotational Euler equations are computed, and their linear and nonlinear stability is analysed by computing eigenspectra of the pertinent linearised operator and by solving an initial value problem. The computations are carried out numerically using a specially developed computational framework based on the finite element method. The Hamiltonian structure of the problem is demonstrated and stability is determined by computing eigenspectra of the pertinent linearised operator. It is found that a hydraulic-fall flow over a bump is spectrally stable. The corresponding flow over a dip is found to be linearly unstable. In the latter case, time-dependent simulations show that the flow ultimately settles into a time-periodic motion that corresponds to an invariant solution in an appropriately defined phase space. Physically, the solution consists of a localised large amplitude wave that pulsates above the dip while simultaneously emitting nonlinear cnoidal waves in the upstream direction and multi-harmonic linear waves in the downstream direction.

Exact Non-Local Hydrodynamics Predict Rarefaction Effects

Abstract:We combine the theory of slow spectral closure for linearized Boltzmann equations with Maxwell's kinetic boundary conditions to derive non-local hydrodynamics with arbitrary accommodation. Focusing on shear-mode dynamics, we obtain explicit steady state solutions in terms of Fourier integrals and closed-form expressions for the mean flow and the stress. We demonstrate that the exact non-local fluid model correctly predicts several rarefaction effects with accommodation, including the Couette flow and thermal creep in a plane channel.

Long-time stability of a stably stratified rest state in the inviscid 2D Boussinesq equation

Abstract:We establish the nonlinear stability on a timescale $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$ of a linearly, stably stratified rest state in the inviscid Boussinesq system on $\mathbb{R}^2$. Here $\varepsilon>0$ denotes the size of an initially sufficiently small, Sobolev regular and localized perturbation. A similar statement also holds for the related dispersive SQG equation. At the core of this result is a dispersive effect due to anisotropic internal gravity waves. At the linearized level, this gives rise to amplitude decay at a rate of $t^{-1/2}$, as observed in [EW15]. We establish a refined version of this, and propagate nonlinear control via a detailed analysis of nonlinear interactions using the method of partial symmetries developed in [GPW23].
