Abstract:With the need of AUV research, we have made a sonar image processing system which is equipped in Chinese 'Explorer' AUV. Based on TMS320C30 high speed DSP, the system is used to realize sonar image compression and underwater object detection including obstacle recognition in real time. Pool and sea testing have been finished and shown good performance. In this paper, the system algorithm, software and hardware are introduced and the experimental results are given.

Abstract:The traditional unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing image processing algorithm is difficult to guarantee both accuracy and speed when dealing with massive data of UAV network. This paper designs an on-the-spot processing system based on portable digital signal processor (DSP) hardware simulation platform. The bilinear interpolation algorithm is optimized and improved for the adaptability of the DSP platform with the reference of the bicubic interpolation algorithm, which is long time-consuming but high accuracy. The nearest neighbor interpolation is merged in the bilinear interpolation algorithm, which improves the edge blurring problem of bilinear interpolation algorithm. In the loop calculation of the multiplication and addition iteration calculation segment of the algorithm, the parallelism of the instruction level is increased by increasing the instruction level parallelism between the loop bodies. Experiments show that, on the basis of ensuring the accuracy of the bilinear interpolation algorithm, the execution speed of the processing algorithm is improved, which can meet the requirements of fast real-time processing of remote sensing images of complex unmanned aerial vehicles.

Abstract:Multiband synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image fusion combines the scattering characteristics of targets from different bands to provide a comprehensive and informative output. However, the conventional SAR denoise and fusion separation framework often encounters the loss of fine details. This problem arises due to the inherent conflict between noise filtering and edge preservation. To address this issue, this article proposes the joint tensor-based low-rank total variation (TLRTV) dual-band SAR image denoise-fusion strategy. The proposed strategy formulates the denoise-fusion problem by integrating the LR and TV models. Furthermore, this problem is extended to a high-dimensional form using tensor representation. To effectively solve the TLRTV problem, an optimization method is developed based on the alternating direction method of multipliers. This method decomposes the TLRTV problem into a series of subproblems, allowing for an efficient and accurate solution. To evaluate the performance of the proposed TLRTV method, the real measurement dual-band SAR images obtained from our developed airborne multiband SAR system are utilized to compare with other existing denoise and fusion separation methods. The extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the TLRTV approach achieving better fusion results, particularly in the presence of noise interference.

Abstract:Aimed at improving the imaging efficiency of frequency-modulation continuous-wave (FMCW) ground-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) characterized with lots of data, high resolution and burden processing of imaging algorithm, a real-time imaging processing software architecture based on TMS320C6678 signal processor is proposed in this paper. The multicore parallel processing technology is adopted to resolve the problem of real time imaging and the polar coordinates backprojection algorithm is realized efficiently. Experimental results demonstrate that the real-time processing software can reduce the time consumption significantly and keep the correctness of the imaging results of ground-based SAR.

Abstract:To meet the requirements of reconnaissance, surveillance, and target detection in large-scale sea areas, this paper proposes a new conception of space-based high-resolution ultra-wide-swath SAR system. Specifically, a high-dexterity beam group network is constructed to acquire wide-area information with high degree of freedom. and a pseudo-random space-time sampling is adopted to achieve pseudosparse coverage of wide swaths. The system meets the demands of large-scale reconnaissance and continuous target monitoring. In this paper, the key technology of the system is refined, and the corresponding solutions and processing methods are given.

Abstract:Spaceborne SAR works in all-weather and day-night and has the ability to image vast area at a high resolution in two dimensions. These advantages make it one of the most important remote sensing devices for earth observation. By developing the technology of the spaceborne SAR real time imaging processing, the satellite's fast response ability can be improved greatly. Analyzed and compared three technical approaches, such as DSP, FPGA and ASIC, a hybrid parallel system structure for real-time imaging processing was proposed. CS algorithm mapping on this structure and pipelined running sequence realization were also presented under the condition of real time processing, both demonstrated that this structure fit for the spaceborne SAR real time imaging processing.

Abstract:This study conducts an in-depth evaluation of imaging algorithms and software and hardware architectures to meet the capability requirements of real-time image acquisition systems, such as spaceborne and airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. By analysing the principles and models of SAR imaging, this research creatively puts forward the fully parallel processing architecture for the back projection (BP) algorithm based on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The processing time consumption has significant advantages compared with existing methods. This article describes the BP imaging algorithm, which stands out with its high processing accuracy and two-dimensional decoupling of distance and azimuth, and analyses the algorithmic flow, operation, and storage requirements. The algorithm is divided into five core operations: range pulse compression, upsampling, oblique distance calculation, data reading, and phase accumulation. The architecture and optimisation of the algorithm are presented, and the optimisation methods are described in detail from the perspective of algorithm flow, fixed-point operation, parallel processing, and distributed storage. Next, the maximum resource utilisation rate of the hardware platform in this study is found to be more than 80%, the system power consumption is 21.073 W, and the processing time efficiency is better than designs with other FPGA, DSP, GPU, and CPU. Finally, the correctness of the processing results is verified using actual data. The experimental results showed that 1.1 s were required to generate an image with a size of 900 × 900 pixels at a 200 MHz clock rate. This technology can solve the multi-mode, multi-resolution, and multi-geometry signal processing problems in an integrated manner, thus laying a foundation for the development of a new, high-performance, SAR system for real-time imaging processing.

Abstract:With the development of satellite load technology and very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit technology, on-board real-time synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging systems have facilitated rapid response to disasters. A key goal of the on-board SAR imaging system design is to achieve high real-time processing performance under severe size, weight, and power consumption constraints. This paper presents a multi-node prototype system for real-time SAR imaging processing. We decompose the commonly used chirp scaling (CS) SAR imaging algorithm into two parts according to the computing features. The linearization and logic-memory optimum allocation methods are adopted to realize the nonlinear part in a reconfigurable structure, and the two-part bandwidth balance method is used to realize the linear part. Thus, float-point SAR imaging processing can be integrated into a single Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip instead of relying on distributed technologies. A single-processing node requires 10.6 s and consumes 17 W to focus on 25-km swath width, 5-m resolution stripmap SAR raw data with a granularity of 16,384 × 16,384. The design methodology of the multi-FPGA parallel accelerating system under the real-time principle is introduced. As a proof of concept, a prototype with four processing nodes and one master node is implemented using a Xilinx xc6vlx315t FPGA. The weight and volume of one single machine are 10 kg and 32 cm × 24 cm × 20 cm, respectively, and the power consumption is under 100 W. The real-time performance of the proposed design is demonstrated on Chinese Gaofen-3 stripmap continuous imaging.

Abstract:With the development of satellite load technology and very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit technology, onboard real-time synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging systems have become a solution for allowing rapid response to disasters. A key goal of the onboard SAR imaging system design is to achieve high real-time processing performance with severe size, weight, and power consumption constraints. In this paper, we analyse the computational burden of the commonly used chirp scaling (CS) SAR imaging algorithm. To reduce the system hardware cost, we propose a partial fixed-point processing scheme. The fast Fourier transform (FFT), which is the most computation-sensitive operation in the CS algorithm, is processed with fixed-point, while other operations are processed with single precision floating-point. With the proposed fixed-point processing error propagation model, the fixed-point processing word length is determined. The fidelity and accuracy relative to conventional ground-based software processors is verified by evaluating both the point target imaging quality and the actual scene imaging quality. As a proof of concept, a field- programmable gate array-application-specific integrated circuit (FPGA-ASIC) hybrid heterogeneous parallel accelerating architecture is designed and realized. The customized fixed-point FFT is implemented using the 130 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology as a co-processor of the Xilinx xc6vlx760t FPGA. A single processing board requires 12 s and consumes 21 W to focus a 50-km swath width, 5-m resolution stripmap SAR raw data with a granularity of 16,384 × 16,384.

Abstract:Based on the characteristic and requirement of aerial remote sensing system, the schemes of whole, software and hardware design of compression system is put forward. This paper brings forward the high compression performance algorithm, modified CDF97(MCDF97) lifting scheme combined with set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) coding, and realizes it in the Visual C++ environment. On this basis, SPM176430ER1000 coprocessor of RTD corporation is adopted as hardware platform. The program is transplanted, debugged and optimized in the code composer studio (CCS) environment, then burned into FLASH of corporation. In the flying experiment, aerial remote sensing data compression system performed well. At 5:1 compression ratio (CR), the average compression speed of every image is 30 to 50 ms, while average decompression speed is 60 ms. Decompression images are displayed in real time in the process of flying, which proved the correction and robustness of the compression system.

Abstract:At present, the resolution of the most advanced airborne microwave photonic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can reach the order of centimeters or even millimeters, so the 2-D spatial variation and 2-D coupling characteristics of motion error will become more serious. In this article, based on the advantages of nonlinear chirp scaling (NCS) and resampling (RS) processing, a microwave photonic SAR full-aperture autofocus algorithm based on a cascaded NCS-RS is proposed. First, the proposed algorithm combines the typical two-step MoCo and chirp-Z transform (CZT) to correct the range spatial variant (RV) characteristics of motion error. Then, a cascaded NCS-RS processing is used to correct the azimuth RV (AV) characteristics of motion error, in which NCS processing is introduced before range cell migration correction (RCMC) and RS processing is introduced after RCMC. Finally, the RS in cascaded NCS-RS processing is modified to change with range to correct the range-azimuth coupling characteristic of motion error. The three steps of the algorithm belong to the full-aperture processing, which avoids the problems of grating lobes and image stitching caused by the subaperture algorithm. The estimation of the parameters in NCS-RS processing is modeled as a high-dimensional optimization problem. Before solving this optimization problem, it is converted to multiple 1-D optimization problems. The results of processing simulated and measured data verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging plays an important role in modern radar systems. It is a powerful tool to surveil the air and space targets under all-weather and day-and-night conditions. With increasing demands for space surveillance and target recognition, real-time ISAR imaging is of great urgency. Based on field programmable gate arrays and digital signal processors, a new design of real-time processing of ISAR imaging is presented in this paper. First, a thorough description of the imaging algorithm is presented. The algorithm includes pulse compression, envelope alignment, phase adjustment, and cross range focusing. For the pulse compression, two different methods are adopted to process the “Dechirp” data and the directly sampled wideband data, respectively. Second, a hardware design of real-time imaging processing is given. Each step of the algorithm is mapped onto the hardware, and the computing resources and latency are analyzed. Finally, the realization is verified by both the simulated and measured data, and the quality of imaging result is evaluated qualitatively.

Abstract:This paper investigates a real-time process generator of wideband signals, which calculates waveforms in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) using the high-level synthesis (HLS) method. To obtain high-resolution and wide-swath images, the generator must produce multiple modes of large time-bandwidth product (TBP) linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals. However, the conventional storage method is unrealistic as it requires huge storage resources to save pre-computed waveforms. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel processing approach that calculates waveforms in real-time based simply on parameters such as the sampling frequency, bandwidth, and time width. Additionally, this paper implements predistortion through the polynomial curve to approximate phase errors of the system. The parallelizing process in the FPGA is necessary to satisfy the high-speed requirement of a digital-to-analog converter (DAC); however, repeatedly multiplexing real-time calculation consumes extensive logic and DSP resources, potentially exceeding FPGA limitations. To address this, this paper proposes a piecewise linear algorithm to conserve resources, which processes the polynomial only once, acquires the difference in two adjacent values through the register and pipeline, and then adds this increment to facilitate parallel computations. The performance of this proposed generator is validated through simulation and implemented in experiments with an X-band airborne SAR system.

Abstract:Aerial Remote Sensing (Aerial RS) image compression & transmission on-board system, not only is the core of Aerial RS supervising, but also the key technology about the security of data obtainment.The requirement of Aerial RS is stricter on the data quality and security. If we transmit the images through some special channels while the images are obtained during the task of Aerial RS, the control center on the ground could acquire the status of the whole Aerial RS system. Besides, it could also backup the images immediately. Image compression & transmission system is the important bridge between the Aerial RS system on-board and the control center.The research group of Aerial RS data processing in Peking University, integrates all the necessary technologies including compression algorithm & hardware, integration of function modules, protocol of data packing & unpacking.The research group has developed an efficient compression method that has been optimized both in software structures and hardware architecture. Considering with the narrow space on the airplane, the research group has designed the compression & transmission function module which is installed on the motherboard of the Aerial RS control system. The compression program is compiled in the Code Composer Studio (CCS) development environment, and then the result file compiled is burned into the DSP chip on the module.This paper also introduces an efficient protocol designed by the research group, which can ensure the accuracy of the transmission. It ensures the control center can rebuild & unpack the packages correctly, and avoid fatal errors caused by some false frames and packages during the transmission.This data compression & transmission system, which has been tested in certain different places in China, has achieved the purpose expected.

Abstract:Formation flying synthetic aperture radar (FF-SAR) systems, as an important development direction of multichannel SAR, can achieve high-resolution wide-swath imaging. Coherently combining data from satellite receivers puts a strain on the traditional real-time processing systems based on individual satellites. Characteristics, such as the power of real-time on-orbit processing platform, must be properly balanced with constrained memory and parallel computational resources. This article proposes a distributed SAR real-time imaging method based on the embedded graphics processing units (GPUs). The parallel computing method of the chirp scaling algorithm is designed based on the parallel programming model of compute unified device architecture, and the optimization methods of memory and performance are proposed for the hardware architecture of embedded GPUs. In particular, the unified memory management method is used to avoid data copying and communication delays between the CPU and GPU. A hardware verification system for distributed SAR real-time imaging processing based on multiple embedded GPUs is constructed. The proposed algorithm takes 5.86 s to process single-precision floating-point complex imaging with a data size of 8192 × 8192 on a single Jetson Nano platform. The actual power consumption is less than 5 W, and the performance-to-power ratio is greater than 1.7%. The experimental results show that the real-time processing method based on the embedded GPUs proposed in this article has high performance and low-power consumption.

Abstract:The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-borne video synthetic aperture radar (SAR) possesses the characteristic of having high-continuous-frame-rate imaging, which is conducive to the real-time monitoring of ground-moving targets. The real-time imaging-processing system for UAV-borne video SAR (ViSAR) requires miniaturization, low power consumption, high frame rate, and high-resolution imaging. In order to achieve high-frame-rate real-time imaging on limited payload-carrying platforms, this study proposes a miniaturization design of a high-integration UAV-borne ViSAR real-time imaging-processing component (MRIPC). The proposed design integrates functions such as broadband signal generation, high-speed real-time sampling, and real-time SAR imaging processing on a single-chip FPGA. The parallel access mechanism using multiple sets of high-speed data buffers increases the data access throughput and solves the problem of data access bandwidth. The range-Doppler (RD) algorithm and map-drift (MD) algorithm are optimized using parallel multiplexing, achieving a balance between computing speed and hardware resources. The test results have verified that our proposed component is effective for the real-time processing of 2048 × 2048 single-precision floating-point data points to realize a 5 Hz imaging frame rate and 0.15 m imaging resolution, satisfying the requirements of real-time ViSAR-imaging processing.

Abstract:The UAV-borne video SAR (ViSAR) imaging system requires miniaturization, low power consumption, high frame rates, and high-resolution real-time imaging. In order to satisfy the requirements of real-time imaging processing for the UAV-borne ViSAR under limited memory and parallel computing resources, this paper proposes a method of embedded GPU-based real-time imaging processing for the UAV-borne ViSAR. Based on a parallel programming model of the compute unified device architecture (CUDA), this paper designed a parallel computing method for range-Doppler (RD) and map drift (MD) algorithms. By utilizing the advantages of the embedded GPU characterized with parallel computing, we improved the processing speed of real-time ViSAR imaging. This paper also adopted a unified memory management method, which greatly reduces data replication and communication latency between the CPU and the GPU. The data processing of 2048 × 2048 points took only 1.215 s on the Jetson AGX Orin platform to form a nine-consecutive-frame image with a resolution of 0.15 m, with each frame taking only 0.135 s, enabling real-time imaging at a high frame rate of 5 Hz. In actual testing, continuous mapping can be achieved without losing the scenes, intuitively obtaining the dynamic observation effects of the area. The processing results of the measured data have verified the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed scheme, satisfying the processing requirements for real-time ViSAR imaging.

In this paper, we aim to investigate the realization of SAR imaging for a stationary radar system with the assistance of active reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). As the UAV moves along the stationary trajectory, the ARIS can not only build a high-quality virtual line-of-sight (LoS) propagation path, but its mobility can also effectively create a much larger virtual aperture, which can be utilized to realize a SAR system. In this paper, we first present a range-Doppler (RD) imaging algorithm to obtain imaging results for the proposed ARIS-empowered SAR system. Then, to further improve the SAR imaging performance, we attempt to optimize the reflection coefficients of ARIS to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the stationary radar receiver under the constraints of ARIS maximum power and amplification factor. An effective algorithm based on fractional programming (FP) and majorization minimization (MM) methods is developed to solve the resulting non-convex problem. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of ARIS-assisted SAR imaging and our proposed RD imaging and ARIS optimization algorithms.
