Abstract:The effect of detailed balance in induced gluon radiation for an energetic parton propagating inside a quark-gluon plasma is discussed. The stimulated thermal gluon emission reduces while absorption increases the parton's energy. The net contribution results in a reduction of the effective parton energy loss. The relative reduction of the parton energy loss is found to be important for intermediate parton energies and negligible for very high energies. This will increase the energy dependence of the parton energy loss and will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high PT hadron spectra.

Abstract:The radiative energy loss of a quark jet traversing a finite size QCD medium with dynamical constituents is calculated to first order in opacity. Although finite size corrections reduce the energy loss relative to an infinite dynamical QCD medium, under realistic conditions it remains significantly larger than in a static medium. Quantitative predictions of jet suppression in relativistic heavy ion collisions must therefore account for the dynamics of the medium's constituents. Finite size effects are shown to induce a non-linear path length dependence of the energy loss. Our results suggest a simple general mapping between energy loss expressions for static and dynamical QCD media.

Abstract:Within the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) parton model, suppression of away-side hadron spectra associated with a high $p_{T}$ photon due to parton energy loss is shown to provide a complete tomographic picture of the dense matter formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. Dictated by the shape of the $\gamma$-triggered jet spectrum in NLO pQCD, hadron spectra at large $z_T=p_T^{h}/p_T^{\gamma} \stackrel{>}{\sim} 1$ are more susceptible to parton energy loss and therefore are dominated by surface emission of $\gamma$-triggered jets, whereas small $z_{T}$ hadrons mainly come from fragmentation of jets with reduced energy from volume emission. These lead to different centrality dependence of the hadron suppression in different regions of $z_{T}$.

Abstract:A complete set of elastic processes and induced gluon radiation within the higher-twist approach have been implemented in the Linear Boltzmann Transport model for jet propagation and interaction with quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We impose global energy momentum conservation in the 2→n processes of induced radiation which will influence the final gluon spectra. We will compare the elastic and the radiative energy loss of partons and their effects on reconstructed jets. The energy loss of a leading parton is found to have a quadratic distance dependence only for a short distance, but will have much weak distance dependence because of the accumulated energy loss and the strong energy dependence of the local energy loss rate. Since reconstructed jets recover some of the energy lost by the leading parton, the quadratic path length dependence persists for a longer distance. The spatial distribution and time evolution of the jet-induced medium excitation are also discussed.

Abstract:We review the currently available formalisms for radiative energy loss of ahigh-momentum parton in a dense strongly interacting medium. The underlyingtheoretical framework of the four commonly used formalisms is discussed and thedifferences and commonalities between the formalisms are highlighted. Aquantitative comparison of the single gluon emission spectra as well as theenergy loss distributions is given for a model system consisting of a uniformmedium with a fixed length of L=2 fm and L=5 fm (the `Brick'). Sizablequantitative differences are found. The largest differences can be attributedto specific approximations that are made in the calculation of the radiationspectrum.

Abstract:Parton energy loss in the hot QCD medium will manifest itself not only in the leading hadron spectra but also in the reconstructed jet productions in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this paper we report on recent theoretical efforts in studying full jet observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions by discussing the modifications of jet shapes, inclusive jet cross section and the vector boson accompanied jet production in the presence of the QGP-induced jet quenching.

Abstract:We study the interplay between the flow and hydrodynamic gradients in jet quenching at first order in opacity. We find that the mixed flow-gradient contributions in jet quenching are enhanced by the medium length, and survive in the eikonal limit, dominating over other medium evolution effects. The resulting modification to the jet quenching parameter and energy loss rate can be substantial, leading to ample phenomenological implications. We also compute the leading corrections to the jet broadening due to the flow velocity gradients, and consider the leading gradient effects in the medium-induced branching for general kinematics, extending the recent considerations of jets in inhomogeneous media. These results can be straightforwardly coupled to matter simulations, providing new opportunities for jet tomography in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:We demonstrate that jet observables are highly sensitive to the characteristics of the vacuum and the in-medium QCD parton showers and propose techniques that exploit this sensitivity to constrain the mechanism of quark and gluon energy loss in strongly interacting plasmas. As a first example, we calculate the inclusive jet cross section in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions to O(alpha(s)(3)). Theoretical predictions for the medium-induced jet broadening and the suppression of the jet production rate due to cold and hot nuclear matter effects in Au+Au and Cu+Cu reactions at RHIC are presented.

Abstract:We calculate the radiative parton energy loss in the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus within a generalized high-twist approach. The final gluon radiation spectrum is a convolution of the hard partonic part and the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) quark-gluon correlation function, without the twist expansion in the transverse momentum of the initial gluons used in original high twist approach. The TMD quark-gluon correlation function can be factorized approximately as the product of initial quark distribution and TMD gluon distribution which can be used to define the generalized or TMD jet transport coefficient. The radiation spectrum will recover the Gylassy-Levai-Vitev (GLV) result in the first order of the opacity expansion, under the static scattering center and soft gluon radiation approximation. We also investigate numerically the difference as a result of the soft gluon radiation approximation, under the static scattering center approximation.

Abstract:We calculate and compare bremsstrahlung and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing a quark-gluon plasma. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling and accounts for the probabilistic nature of the jet energy loss. We find that the nuclear modification factor R-AA for neutral pi(0) production in heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the inclusion of collisional and radiative energy loss contributions while the averaged energy loss only slightly increases if collisional energy loss is included for parent parton energies E > T. These results are important for the understanding of jet quenching in Au+Au collisions at 200A GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Comparison with data is performed applying the energy loss calculation to a relativistic ideal (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic description of the thermalized medium formed at RHIC.

Abstract:While strong attenuation of single particle production and particle correlations has provided convincing evidence for large parton energy loss in the QGP, its application to jet tomography has inherent limitations due to the inclusive nature of the measurements. Generalization of this suppression to full jet observables leads to an unbiased, more differential and thus powerful approach to determining the characteristics of the hot QCD medium created in high-energy nuclear collisions. In this article we report on recent theoretical progress in calculating jet shapes and the related jet cross sections in the presence of QGP-induced parton energy loss. (i) A theoretical model of intra-jet energy flow in heavy-ion collisions is discussed. (ii) Realistic numerical simulations demonstrate the nuclear modification factor R-AA(p(T)) evolves continuously with the jet cone size R-max or the acceptance cut omega(min) - a novel feature of jet quenching. The anticipated broadening of jets is subtle and most readily manifested in the periphery of the cone for smaller cone radii.

Abstract:Transverse momentum broadening and parton energy loss for a jet propagating inside a medium can be characterized by the jet transport parameter (q) over cap which is essentially the local gluon density as probed by an energetic jet. This is the underlying principle of jet tomography of dense matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Abstract:Classical novae are potential sources of gamma-rays, like the 1.275 MeV gamma emission following 22Na beta decay, that could be detected by appropriate instruments on board of future satellites like INTEGRAL. It has been shown that the production of 22Na by novae is affected by the uncertainty on the 21Na(p,gamma)22Mg rate and in particular by the unknown partial widths of the Ex = 5.714 MeV, J^pi = 2^+, 22Mg level. To reduce these uncertainties, we performed shell model calculations with the OXBASH code, compared the results with available spectroscopic data and calculated the missing partial widths. Finally, we discuss the influence of these results on the 21Na(p,gamma)22Mg reaction rate and 22Na synthesis.

Abstract:Multiple scattering, modified fragmentation functions, and radiative energy loss of a heavy-quark propagating in a nuclear medium are investigated in perturbative QCD. Because of the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the medium size dependence of heavy-quark energy loss is found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss is also significantly suppressed relative to a light quark due to the suppression of collinear gluon emission by a heavy quark.
A New Model for Jet Energy Loss in Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract:We present a new model for jet quenching from coherent radiation in a brick medium. The jet energy loss is simulated as a perturbative final-state vacuum parton shower followed by a medium-induced shower originating from elastic and radiative collisions with the medium constituents. Coherency is achieved by starting with trial gluons that act as field dressing of the initial jet parton. These are formed according to a Gunion-Bertsch seed. The QCD version of the LPM effect is attained by increasing the phase of the trial gluons through elastic scatterings with the medium. Above a phase threshold, the trial gluons will be realised and can produce coherent radiation themselves. The model has been implemented in a Monte Carlo code and has been validated by successfully reproducing the BDMPS-Z prediction for the energy spectrum. The realistic case with minimal assumptions are also produced and shown. In particular, we show the influence of various parameters on the energy spectrum and transverse momentum distribution, such as the in-medium quark masses, the energy transfer in the recoil process, and the phase accumulation criteria, especially for low and intermediate energy gluons. Future studies will allow for the interface with full simulations of the quark-gluon-plasma with hydrodynamic evolution, such as vHLLE, along with subsequent hadronisation of the jet partons in order to produce realistic distributions that can be directly compared to LHC and RHIC data.
