Abstract:We extend the well-known Feynman-Hellmann theorem, usually suitable for pure state average values, to the case of mixed states. The generalized Feynman-Hellmann theorem in the form of ensemble average values is derived. An application of the new form to the corresponding virial theorem is also given.

Abstract:In this paper, after introducing the generalized Hellmann-Feynman (or Feynman-Hellmann) theorem (GHFT) for mixed-state ensemble average, we apply GHFT to deriving the internal energy of some Hamiltonian systems in quantum optics. The ensemble average energy contributed from each separated term involved in the Hamiltonian is also considered. We thus develop an alternate approach for deriving the internal energy.

Abstract:By virtue of the generalized Hellmann–Feynman theorem [H. Y. Fan and B. Z. Chen, Phys. Lett. A 203, 95 (1995)], we derive the mean energy of some interacting bosonic systems for some Hamiltonian models without proceeding with diagonalizing the Hamiltonians. Our work extends the field of applications of the Hellmann–Feynman theorem and may enrich the theory of quantum statistics.

Abstract:We show that the generalized Hellmann-Feynman theorem (GHFT) for ensemble average can be expressed in the formalism of pure state expectation. We employ the thermo field dynamics proposed by Umezawa and Takahash to realize this goal, the pure state |0( β )〉 is defined in doubled eigenvector space of the Hamiltonian. Relation between the GHFT and entropy-variation in the context of |0( β )〉 is also derived.

Abstract:From Maxwell’ s equations for electromagnetic fields, time-averaged energy flow density vector of stable monochromatic linearly polarized light in an isotropic insulative nonmagnetic medium is deduced. By the introduction of time-averaged energy flow density rays and the definition of new generalized refractive indexn G1, Fermat’s principle of geometric optics is further generalized and its application conditions are discussed. The generalized Fermat' s principle can be used to describe stable transmission of light in a medium with variable refractive index. The necessary and sufficient conditions of a nondivergent and nonfocusing light beam are derived from this Fermat’s principle.

Abstract:According to Fan-Hu's formalism (Fan Hong-Yi and Hu Li-Yun 2009 Opt. Commun. 282 3734) that the tomogram of quantum states can be considered as the module-square of the state wave function in the intermediate coordinate momentum representation which is just the eigenvector of the Fresnel quadrature phase, we derive a new theorem for calculating quantum tomogram of density operator, i.e., the tomogram of a density operator rho is equal to the marginal integration of the classical Weyl correspondence function of F-dagger rho F, where F is the Fresnel operator. Applications of this theorem to evaluating the tomogram of optical chaotic field and squeezed chaotic optical field are presented.

Abstract:We show that the probability distribution p(m, T) of registering m photoelectrons can be explained in Thermo Field Dynamics theory as a matrix element of thermo entangling operator e(1-xi) a(dagger) (a) over tilde (dagger) between = vertical bar m > vertical bar (m) over tilde > where vertical bar(m) over tilde > is a fictitious Fock state. Based on this, the new integration formula for calculating p(m, T), which involves both Laguerre polynomial and the characteristic function chi(eta) of rho, is obtained. This provides us with convenience for evaluating photoelectric counting probability for various optical fields.

Abstract:We study statistical properties of the Hamiltonian (H=ωa†a+κa†N+1+κN+1a) generating phase state. Using the generalized Hellmann–Feynman theorem for ensemble average, we derive its mean energy and find the ratio of the mean energies contributed from the term a†a to that from a†N+1+κN+1a. The relation on the entropy-variation with respect to the dynamic parameters ω and κ is also examined.

Abstract:We establish a connection between the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) and the monotonicity of the renormalization group, by studying the light-ray operator $\int du T_{uu}$ in quantum field theories that flow between two conformal fixed points. In four dimensions, we derive an exact sum rule relating this operator to the Euler coefficient in the trace anomaly, and show that the ANEC implies the a-theorem. The argument is based on matching anomalies in the stress tensor 3-point function, and relies on special properties of contact terms involving light-ray operators. We also illustrate the sum rule for the example of a free massive scalar field. Averaged null energy appears in a variety of other applications to quantum field theory, including causality constraints, Lorentzian inversion, and quantum information. The quantum information perspective provides a new derivation of the $a$-theorem from the monotonicity of relative entropy. The equation relating our sum rule to the dilaton scattering amplitude in the forward limit suggests an inversion formula for non-conformal theories.

Abstract:For the quantized LC electric circuit, when taking the Joule thermal effect into account, we think that physical observables should be evaluated in the context of ensemble average. We then use the generalized Feynman-Hellmann theorem for ensemble average to calculate them, which seems convenient. Fluctuation of observables in various LC electric circuits in the presence of thermo bath growing with temperature is exhibited.

Abstract:For a system of $N$ fermions of spin $1/2$, with its interaction potential of scattering length $a$, the classical Huang-Yang formula state that the energy density $e(\rho)$ is of the form \begin{equation*} e(\rho)=\frac{3}{5}(3\pi^2)^{\frac{2}{3}}\rho^{\frac{5}{3}}+2\pi a\rho^2 +\frac{12}{35}(11-2\ln2)3^{\frac{1}{3}}\pi^{\frac{2}{3}}a^2\rho^{\frac{7}{3}} +o(\rho^{\frac{7}{3}}). \end{equation*} We consider a general system of $N$ fermions of spin $1/\mathbf{q}$ with the scattering length of the interaction potential at the scale $a=N^{-1}$ i.e. in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We prove the 2nd order ground state energy approximation corresponding to the Huang-Yang formula. This is a preliminary version of the paper including the main structure of the proof and the computation of the Huang-Yang formula. The full papaer including all Lemmas' proofs and a more proper introduction will be uploaded soon. The thermodynamic limit case shares a similar logic, and could be dealt with in a separate paper.

A pedestrian approach to Einstein's formula $E=mc^2$ with an application to photon dynamics

Abstract:There are several ways to derive Einstein's celebrated formula for the energy of a massive particle at rest, $E=mc^2$. Noether's theorem applied to the relativistic Lagrange function provides an unambiguous and straightforward access to energy and momentum conservation laws but those tools were not available at the beginning of the twentieth century and are not at hand for newcomers even nowadays. In a pedestrian approach, we start from relativistic kinematics and analyze elastic and inelastic scattering processes in different reference frames to derive the relativistic energy-mass relation. We extend the analysis to Compton scattering between a massive particle and a photon, and a massive particle emitting two photons. Using the Doppler formula, it follows that $E=\hbar \omega$ for photons at angular frequency $\omega$ where $\hbar$ is the reduced Planck constant. We relate our work to other derivations of Einstein's formula in the literature.

Abstract:Based on simplified models, formulae for determining particle energy losses due to Beamstarhlung in supercolliders are obtained. The developed semi-analytical approach can be useful for estimating the parameters of colliding beams under various conditions without using special beam-beam simulation codes.

Abstract:By introducing the thermo entangled state representation, we derive four new photocount distribution formulas for a given light field density operator. It is shown that these new formulas, which are convenient to calculate the photocount, can be expressed as integrations over a Laguerre-Gaussian function with a characteristic function, Wigner function, Q-function and P-function, respectively.

Abstract:An exact formula for the nonrelativistic ground-state energy of an atom or molecule is derived: E=12 ∑ A ZA2(∂ φA∂ rA)rA=0−12 ∑ A ∫ Z′ZAA=0 Z′A2[∂∂Z′A(∂φA∂rA)rA=0]NdZ′A. The function φA is defined for each nucleus A by φA = rA V/ZA, where ZA is the nuclear charge and V is the total electrostatic potential produced by the electrons and nuclei at a point rA measured from nucleus A. φA represents the screening of nucleus A by the electrons and other nuclei. The integration must be carried out over an isoelectronic path, the number of electrons being equal to the actual number N in the atom or molecule being considered. Equation (I) gives the molecular energy as a sum of atomiclike terms. It is shown that atomic energies can be calculated with remarkable accuracy with the equation E=37Z2(∂ φ / ∂ r)r=0, using Hartree-Fock values for (∂φ/∂r)r=0. Equation (II) is identical in form with a relationship in the Thomas-Fermi theory of atoms. These equations emphasize the dependence of atomic and molecular energies upon the electrostatic potentials at the nuclei. This is further discussed and illustrated. A semiempirical formula for the energy of an atom as a power series in Z1/3 is also presented.
