Open-Source Innovation Multiple Incentives and Effective Private Provision of Public Goods

Abstract:Due to its openness and sharing of its results,the nature of open-source innovation is taking knowledge as a kind of public good,which can be privately and effectively provided via the Internet. The open source contributors are driven both by outcome-oriented and participation-oriented incentives. The young developers with less development cost or higher participation benefits will actively participate in the open source project with longer lifecycle or higher business value. All the developers will choose to join open source projects and continue to make contributions as long as motivations have positive network externality and the number of potential contributors is large enough.Open-source innovation has provided a brand new idea for China to make itself an innovative country in the information age.
