Abstract:Freezing- and thawing-induced variations of groundwater level and the corresponding changes in water storage in the saturated zone have been observed in regions with a shallow water table. However, the vertical migration of water under the effect of the freezing-thawing process on shallow groundwater has not been accurately quantified and the influencing factors of groundwater level dynamics during the freezing-thawing period remain unclear. Reasonable representation of this process on the field scale is very important for improving our understanding of water budgets during the freezing-thawing cycle. In this study, we investigated the main factors controlling groundwater level fluctuations during the freezing-thawing period at two sites in Northeast China through comparative analyses of long-term field observations of air temperature, precipitation, snow depth, liquid soil water content, soil water temperature, and fluctuations of groundwater level. We found that the seasonal variations in groundwater table coincided with the soil frost freezing-thawing seasonal cycle, which exhibited a “V” shape. Freezing-induced groundwater decline occurred only when the maximum depth of effect of freezing and thawing overlapped with the maximum height of capillary rise in unconfined groundwater. Moreover, the decline was controlled by air temperature, snow cover, soil media properties, and soil water distribution. By comparing the change trends of groundwater level and calculating the water budget, the process of the rise of groundwater level could be further divided into three stages, during which groundwater was recharged by frost melt water and snowmelt water. Among them, snowmelt water had a limited contribution, accounting for less than 20% of the total recharge. The results have potential applications in the development of reasonable water-management plans for irrigation, using which soil salt can be washed out and suitable soil thermal and moisture conditions can be maintained for winter crops or farming in the next year.

Abstract:In recent years, under the influence of global warming, the freezing depth of seasonally frozen ground (SFG) has decreased at an accelerating rate. This has affected engineering and construction insofar as accurate determinations are needed of SFG areas and the amount of frost heaving. In this study, a method of deriving the E- factor using the improved Stefan formula was used to study changes in the standard freezing depth (SFD) of SFG in China. The method was used to reveal the trends and patterns of changes in the SFD of SFG over the past fifty years. The study relied on ERA5L and reanalysis data and empirical formulas for standard sites in China's SFG regions. Raster data of the interdecadal SFD in SFG areas of China from 1971 to 2020 were generated to analyze changes in the SFD. Our results show that in the past fifty years, the SFD in China's SFG areas has shown a downward trend, with the SFD changing at an average rate of −6.749 cm/10a years. The average SFD in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s was 111.31, 107.13, 95.69, 89.84, and 86.21 cm, respectively. From the overall performance of the SFD in different decadal periods, the SFD in central and northeast China changed sharply within the range of 35° N to 50° N in SFG regions. The boundary lines of low-value SFDs expanded sharply to the north as the latitude increased, and the boundary lines of high-value SFDs contracted sharply.

Abstract:The near-surface soil freeze state is affected by global warming, and its changes have profound effects on landscapes, ecosystems and hydrological processes. On the basis of daily soil freeze observational data at 476 meteorological stations over 50 freezing years from September 1, 1961 to August 31, 2011, the spatial distributions and temporal variations of the near-surface soil freeze state were estimated using five freeze variables (first date, last date, maximum seasonally frozen depth, duration and actual number of freeze days) across China, which was divided into three regions (eastern China, northwestern China and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP)). The near-surface soil freeze state varied greatly across China. The QTP has an earlier freeze, later thaw, longer freeze days and deeper seasonally frozen depth than the other two regions. The spatial distributions of the near-surface soil freeze state can be explained largely by altitude in northwestern China and on the QTP, whereas they can be explained by latitude in eastern China. The near-surface soil freeze state has changed significantly over 50 freezing years. On average across China over the study period, the first date of freezing was delayed by approximately 10 +/- 1 days with a rate of 0.20 +/- 0.02 days/year, the last date advanced by approximately 18 +/- 2 days with a rate of 0.36 +/- 0.04 days/year, the duration and the number of freeze days decreased by 28 +/- 2 and 23 +/- 2 days with rates of 0.56 +/- 0.04 and 0.45 +/- 0.04 days/year, respectively, and the maximum seasonally frozen depth decreased by 20 +/- 3 cm with a rate of 0.41 +/- 0.06 cm/year. The change in the freeze variables is relatively large in high-latitude and high-altitude regions.
Role of Climate Anomalies on Decadal Variation in the Occurrence of Wintertime Haze in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:The wintertime haze day (HD) in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China shows a significant upward trend during the past decades due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization. Besides the enhanced anthropogenic emission, climate change also plays the important role in the long term HD variations. In this study, the significant decadal variation of wintertime HD during the period 1960–2012 in YRD is examined by the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, featured as less HD occurrence before 1980 and more occurrence after 2000. The numerical simulations by the global transport and chemical model (Model for Ozone and Related chemical Tracers, MOZART) with the same emission inventory suggest 8.4% enhancement of wintertime PM2.5 (particulate matter with the equivalent diameter of air dynamics less than or equal to 2.5μm) mass concentration in YRD during 2001–2009 compared with that during 1971–1979 attributed to meteorological changes, indicating the significant effect of climate anomaly on the decadal variations of wintertime HD. Through the composite analysis on the atmospheric dynamical and thermal conditions based on the reanalysis data, the faster warming in the lower and middle troposphere over the continent in the recent decade is suggested to be important for the out-of-phase decadal HD variation in YRD. The thermal anomaly not only reverses the zonal thermal difference of land-sea to stimulate the anomalous southerlies over YRD leading to reduced prevailing north wind in winter, but also develops the deep inversion below the mid-troposphere to enhance the atmospheric stability. As a result, more frequent and persistent air stagnations in recent decade are expected for the reduction of atmospheric horizontal dispersion and vertical diffusion capacity leading to more occurrence of wintertime HD in YRD.
Influences of Frozen Ground and Climate Change on Hydrological Processes in an Alpine Watershed: A Case Study in the Upstream Area of the Hei'he River, Northwest China

Abstract:In cold regions, the occurrence of frozen ground has a fundamental control over the character of the water cycle. To investigate the impact of changing ground temperature conditions on hydrological processes in the context of climate change, a distributed hydrological model with an explicit frozen ground module was applied to an alpine watershed in the upstream area of the Hei'he River in the Qilian Mountains, northwest China. After evaluating the base model, we considered scenarios of frost-free ground and climate change. Results showed that the base model with a frozen ground module successfully captured the water balance and thermal regimes in the basin. When the frozen ground module was turned off, the simulated groundwater recharge and base flow increased by a factor of two to three because surface runoff caused by exceeding infiltration capacities at high elevations, which occurred in the base model, was eliminated. Consequently, the river hydrograph became smoother and flatter, with summer flood peaks delayed and reduced in volume. The annual mean depth where subsurface runoff was generated, was about 2.4m compared to 1.1m in the base model. For a warming climate, a combination of increasing evapotranspiration and reducing permafrost area results in smoother and flatter hydrographs, and a reduction in total river discharge. Although our analysis using numerical models has its limitations, it still provides new quantitative understanding of the influences of frozen ground and climate change on hydrological processes in an alpine watershed. Spatial and Temporal Changes in Soil Freeze-Thaw State and Freezing Depth of Northeast China and Their Driving Factors

Abstract:It is necessary to further investigate the spatial considerations, temporal characteristics, and drivers of change affecting the beginning and end of soil freezing and thawing, including the maximum depth of the seasonal freezing (MDSF) and the active layer thickness (ALT) in Northeast China. Hourly soil temperature, among other data, from 1983–2022 were investigated, showing a delay of about 6 days in freezing. In contrast, thawing and complete thawing advanced by about 26 and 20 d, respectively. The freezing period and total freeze-thaw days decreased by about 29 and 23 days, respectively. The number of complete thawing period days increased by about 22 days, while the MDSF decreased by about 25 cm. The ALT increased by about 22 cm. Land Surface Temperature (LST) is the main factor influencing the beginning and end of soil freezing and thawing, MDSF and ALT changes in Northeast China; air temperature, surface net solar radiation, and volumetric soil water content followed. The influence of the interacting factors was greater than the single factors, and the interactive explanatory power of the LST and surface net solar radiation was highest when the soil started to freeze (0.858). The effect of the LST and the air temperature was highest when the soil was completely thawed (0.795). LST and the volumetric soil water content interacted to have the first explanatory power for MDSF (0.866) and ALT (0.85). The results of this study can provide scientific reference for fields such as permafrost degradation, cold zone ecological environments, and agricultural production in Northeast China.

Primary Analyses of Upper-Air Temperature Changes in China in Past 40 Years

Abstract:Based on the temperature data from the surface to the 10 hPa levels in China at 28 radiosonde stations in 1961-2000,the seasonal variation and long-term trend are studied.The main results are as follows: The seasonal evolution features between surface and 200 hPa and 100 hPa levels are different,e.g.,from surface to 200 hPa the hottest month is July,the coldest month is January,but above 100 hPa levels the result is the oppositive.In late 40 years,the temperature in the lower troposphere significantly increases over almost the country except for south-west China,but it decreases in both upper troposphere and lower stratosphere(especially on 50 hPa levels).The influences of major volcanic eruptions on upper temperature of low latitude and mid-high latitude regions of China are different.In 26 months after volcanic eruption stratosphere temperature is positive abnormaly in lower latitude region,especially from seventh to eighth months the warming is remarkable.Troposphere temperature is cooling in 6~7th months and 16~27th months,the intensity of first cooling period is larger.In middle-high latitude regions,the stratosphere temperature has two obvious warming periods in 1~16th months and 20~29th months,but it is cooling in 17~19th months.The troposphere temperature is cooling in 2~5th months,14~18th months and 21~30th months. The intensity of third cooling period is larger.
Impact of Global Warming on Latitudinal Temperature Gradients in China

Abstract:Global warming or any climate change may cause changes in other geographical elements,including changes in sea level,amount and pattern of precipitation,climate patterns and various other forms of climate change.Such changes can trigger various detrimental effects by causing flood,drought,heat wave,reduction of agricultural yield or in extreme circumstances,and cause mass extinction.The temperature variation in China is so complicated that even the temperature trends are completely different in the same period,with temperature increase trend in some areas but with temperature decrease trend in some other areas.So it is very significant to discover the global warming impacts in China and find the regional response laws to global warming.In this paper,the data set of 160 National Meteorological Observatory stations with long-term monthly temperature data for China has been analyzed to discover the warming pattern in China,i.e.finding the variation of temperature gradients in the past half century.By calculation and analysis,it is found that,with the global warming in the past half-century,the latitudinal temperature gradient became smaller and smaller,with a bigger magnitude in winter than in summer and a larger quantum in higher latitude than in lower latitude.The variation of the latitudinal temperature gradients in China is due to the different continentalities of the areas with different latitudes.And the stronger the continentality,the larger amplitude the temperature change will be.Also,it is found that the temperature changes of different seasons are asynchronous.Although human activities are contributing more and more to climate change,landforms and latitude effects seemed to be dominating factors influencing the spatial distribution of climate change of China in the 20th century.
Regional Summer Temperature Decrease Against Global Warming in China, Landform Effect?

Abstract:The data of 160 national meteorological observatory (NMO) stations with long-term monthly temperature data for China were analyzed in this study to show the basin-centered summer temperature decrease against global warming in the past half century. The summer and winter isotherm structures of 1950s and 1990s worked out by interpolation show the isotherm structure variations: the isotherm structure generally moves northward in winter, but in summer it is characterized with separate high-temperature and low-temperature centers and the isotherm structure moves inward the centers with global warming, indicating that the temperature in the highland areas increases but that in the lowland areas decreases in the summer of the duration. The possible mechanism of the basin-centered temperature decrease in summer is discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Dynamics of the frozen ground are key to understand the changes of eco-environment in cold regions, especially for areas with limited field observations. In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of the ground surface freezing and thawing indices from 1900 to 2017 for the upper Brahmaputra River (also called the Yarlung Zangbo River in China) Basin (UBRB), southwestern Tibetan Plateau, with the air freezing and thawing indices using the University of Delaware (UDEL) monthly gridded air temperature dataset. The abrupt change years for air freezing index (AFI) and ground surface freezing index (GFI) were detected in 1999 and 2002, respectively, and for both air thawing index (ATI) and ground surface thawing index (GTI) were 2009. With the air temperature rising at a rate of 0.006 °C per year over 1900‒2017, the AFI and GFI decreased at a rate of –0.1 °C d per year, while the ATI and GTI increased at rates of 0.3 and 0.5 °C d per year before the abrupt change year, respectively; all changing trends of freezing/thawing indices increased after the abrupt year, which was –2.9, –0.8, 7.3, and 21.7 °C d per year for the AFI, GFI, ATI, and GTI, respectively. We utilized the surface frost number model to obtain the dynamics of the frozen ground over the UBRB. When the empirical coefficient of <em>E</em> was assigned to 1.2, the simulated frozen ground occupied about 53.2% of the whole UBRB in the 1990s, which agreed well with the existing permafrost map published in 1996. The area of frozen ground accounts for 51.5%‒54.5% of the UBRB during 1900‒2017. This result may facilitate further studies of the multi-interactions among the permafrost and relevant eco-environment, such as the air-ground surface energy exchange, hydrological cycles, and changes of the active layer thickness over the UBRB.

Abstract:An overview of basic research on climate change in recent years in China is presented. In the past 100 years in China, average annual mean surface air temperature (SAT) has increased at a rate ranging from 0.03°C (10 yr) −1 to 0.12°C (10 yr) −1 . This warming is more evident in northern China and is more significant in winter and spring. In the past 50 years in China, at least 27% of the average annual warming has been caused by urbanization. Overall, no significant trends have been detected in annual and/or summer precipitation in China on a whole for the past 100 years or 50 years. Both increases and decreases in frequencies of major extreme climate events have been observed for the past 50 years. The frequencies of extreme temperature events have generally displayed a consistent pattern of change across the country, while the frequencies of extreme precipitation events have shown only regionally and seasonally significant trends. The frequency of tropical cyclone landfall decreased slightly, but the frequency of sand/dust storms decreased significantly. Proxy records indicate that the annual mean SAT in the past a few decades is the highest in the past 400–500 years in China, but it may not have exceeded the highest level of the Medieval Warm Period (1000–1300 AD). Proxy records also indicate that droughts and floods in eastern China have been characterized by continuously abnormal rainfall periods, with the frequencies of extreme droughts and floods in the 20th century most likely being near the average levels of the past 2000 years. The attribution studies suggest that increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere are likely to be a main factor for the observed surface warming nationwide. The Yangtze River and Huaihe River basins underwent a cooling trend in summer over the past 50 years, which might have been caused by increased aerosol concentrations and cloud cover. However, natural climate variability might have been a main driver for the mean and extreme precipitation variations observed over the past century. Climate models generally perform well in simulating the variations of annual mean SAT in China. They have also been used to project future changes in SAT under varied GHG emission scenarios. Large uncertainties have remained in these model-based projections, however, especially for the projected trends of regional precipitation and extreme climate events.
Quantitative Changes in the Surface Frozen Days and Potential Driving Factors in Northern Northeastern China

Abstract:Surface freezing and thawing processes pose significant influences on surface water and energy balances, which, in turn, affect vegetation growth, soil moisture, carbon cycling, and terrestrial ecosystems. At present, the changes in surface freezing and thawing states are hotspots of ecological research, but the variations of surface frozen days (SFDs) are less studied, especially in the permafrost areas covered with boreal forest, and the influence of the environmental factors on the SFDs is not clear. Utilizing the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSRE) and Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) brightness temperature data, this study applies the Freeze–Thaw Discriminant Function Algorithm (DFA) to explore the spatiotemporal variability features of SFDs in the Northeast China Permafrost Zone (NCPZ) and the relationship between the permafrost distribution and the spatial variability characteristics of SFDs; additionally, the Optimal Parameters-based Geographical Detector is employed to determine the factors that affect SFDs. The results showed that the SFDs in the NCPZ decreased with a rate of −0.43 d/a from 2002 to 2021 and significantly decreased on the eastern and western slopes of the Greater Khingan Mountains. Meanwhile, the degree of spatial fluctuation of SFDs increased gradually with a decreasing continuity of permafrost. Snow cover and air temperature were the two most important factors influencing SFD variability in the NCPZ, accounting for 83.9% and 74.8% of the spatial variation, respectively, and SFDs increased gradually with increasing snow cover and decreasing air temperature. The strongest explanatory power of SFD spatial variability was found to be the combination of air temperature and precipitation, which had a coefficient of 94.2%. Moreover, the combination of any two environmental factors increased this power. The findings of this study can be used to design ecological environmental conservation and engineer construction policies in high-latitude permafrost zones with forest cover.

Abstract:Abstract. Freezing-induced groundwater-level decline is widely observed in regions with a shallow water table, but many existing studies on freezing-induced groundwater migration do not account for freezing-induced water-level fluctuations. Here, by combining detailed field observations of liquid soil water content and groundwater-level fluctuations at a site in the Ordos Plateau, China, and numerical modeling, we showed that the interaction of soil water and groundwater dynamics was controlled by wintertime atmospheric conditions and topographically driven lateral groundwater inflow. With an initial water table depth of 120 cm and a lateral groundwater inflow rate of 1.03 mm d−1, the observed freezing and thawing-induced fluctuations of soil water content and groundwater level are well reproduced. By calculating the budget of groundwater, the mean upward flux of freezing-induced groundwater loss is 1.46 mm d−1 for 93 d, while the mean flux of thawing-induced groundwater recharge is as high as 3.94 mm d−1 for 32 d. These results could be useful for local water resources management when encountering seasonally frozen soils and for future studies on two- or three-dimensional transient groundwater flow in semi-arid and seasonally frozen regions. By comparing models under a series of conditions, we found the magnitude of freezing-induced groundwater loss decreases with initial water table depth and increases with the rate of groundwater inflow. We also found a fixed-head lower boundary condition would overestimate freezing-induced groundwater migration when the water table depth is shallow. Therefore, an accurate characterization of freezing-induced water table decline is critical to quantifying the contribution of groundwater to hydrological and ecological processes in cold regions.

Abstract:The temperature for cloud glaciation importantly determines the initialization of precipitation and lifetime of clouds. The role of anthropogenic pollutants as ice nucleating particles (INPs) to determine the cloud glaciation remains uncertain. In this study, based on satellite radar and lidar observations, the clouds either in pure liquid or mixed‐phase with liquid top were statistically analyzed over China during 2006–2019, to obtain the transition freezing temperature (T*) of cloud top where mixed‐phase becomes more frequent than pure water, with further validation by the aircraft in situ measurements. Anthropogenic pollution was observed to raise T* up to −9°C, significantly increasing it by approximately 5°C per unit of aerosol optical depth. The results provide regional‐scale evidence that anthropogenic pollutants act as efficient INPs, increasing the freezing temperature of mixed‐phase clouds.

Abstract:The Yarlung Zangbo River is a river of rich water resources, but its upper reach runoffs are impacted significantly by climate changes, glacier and frozen soil degradation. This paper develops a distributed eco hydrological model（GBEHM） coupled with cryospheric process modeling to simulate the runoff changes in its upper basin, focusing on an analysis of the variation trends of the hydrological elements in the study area and a quantitative assessment of the impact of climate changes. The results show that from 1981 to 2010, the annual runoff and evapotranspiration in this basin experienced a significant increase, and precipitation increase contributed most to the runoff increase. This period saw a 7% decrease in the permafrost area, a 30.6 cm/10a increase in the thickness of the permafrost active layer, and a 7.3 cm/10a decrease in the annual maximum freezing depth of seasonal frozen ground. The water reserves in the glaciers were decreased significantly at a rate of 1 billion m3/a, while their melting runoff increased at 2.7 mm/a.
Influence of the freezing level on atmospheric rivers in High Mountain Asia: WRF case studies of orographic precipitation extremes

Abstract:Atmospheric rivers (ARs) reach High Mountain Asia (HMA) about 10 days per month during the winter and spring, resulting in about 20 mm day-1 of precipitation. However, a few events may exceed 100 mm day-1, providing most of the total winter precipitation and increasing the risk of precipitation-triggered landslides and flooding, particularly when the height of the height of the 0 ∘C isotherm, or freezing level is above-average. This study shows that from 1979 to 2015, integrated water vapor transport (IVT) during ARs that reach Western HMA has increased 16% while the freezing level has increased up to 35 m. HMA ARs that have an above-average freezing level result in 10-40% less frozen precipitation compared to ARs with a below-average freezing level. To evaluate the importance of these trends in the characteristics of ARs, we investigate mesoscale processes leading to orographic precipitation using Advanced Weather Research and Forecasting (ARW-WRF) simulations at 6.7 km spatial resolution. We contrast two above- and below- average freezing level AR events with otherwise broadly similar characteristics and show that with a 50-600 m increase in freezing level, the above-average AR resulted in 10-70% less frozen precipitation than the below-average event. This study contributes to a better understanding of climate change-related impacts within HMA's hydrological cycle and the associated hazards to vulnerable communities living in the region.
Estimation of Soil Freeze Depth in Typical Snowy Regions Using Reanalysis Dataset: A Case Study in Heilongjiang Province, China

Abstract:Soil freeze depth variations greatly affect energy exchange, carbon exchange, ecosystem diversity, and the water cycle. Given the importance of these processes, obtaining freeze depth data over large scales is an important focus of research. This paper presents a simple empirical algorithm to estimate the maximum seasonally frozen depth (MSFD) of seasonally frozen ground (SFG) in snowy regions. First, the potential influences of driving factors on the MSFD variations were quantified in the baseline period (1981–2010) based on the 26 meteorological stations within and around the SFG region of Heilongjiang province. The three variables that contributed more than 10% to MSFD variations (i.e., air freezing index, annual mean snow depth, and snow cover days) were considered in the analysis. A simple multiple linear regression to estimate soil freeze depth was fitted (1981–2010) and verified (1975–1980 and 2011–2014) using ground station observations. Compared with the commonly used simplified Stefan solution, this multiple linear regression produced superior freeze depth estimations, with the mean absolute error and root mean square error of the station average reduced by over 20%. By utilizing this empirical algorithm and the ERA5-Land reanalysis dataset, the multi-year average MSFD (1981–2010) was 132 cm, ranging from 52 cm to 186 cm, and MSFD anomaly exhibited a significant decreasing trend, at a rate of −0.38 cm/decade or a net change of −28.14 cm from 1950–2021. This study provided a practical approach to model the soil freeze depth of SFG over a large scale in snowy regions and emphasized the importance of considering snow cover variables in analyzing and estimating soil freeze depth.
Dynamic Controls of the Interannual and Interdecadal Variations of the Freezing Level Height over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The variation of freezing level height (FLH) is significantly indicated the cryosphere change under global warming. In this study, the FLH during boreal summer in the TP regions is investigated, with the leading mode of a mono-sign pattern both on interannual and interdecadal timescales. The interannual variation of the summer FLH is dominantly coupled with the summer Arctic Oscillation (AO). When the AO is in positive phase, positive geopotential height anomalies are prolonged in the mid-latitude and negative anomalies are present over the Arctic regions. Meanwhile, the westerly shifts northward and strengthened, preventing the cold air propagating southward. These conditions are beneficial for the surface and free-air temperature increasing and thus enhance the FLH over the TP. On the interdecadal timescale, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has mainly contributed to the variation of summer FLH. In the negative PDO phase, the warming sea surface temperature anomalies appear in the North Pacific, which could drive wave trains propagating eastward and induce high pressure around the northern TP. With the anomalous anticyclone from TP to western North Pacific, the southeasterly wind is prevalent in the TP. Consequently, the northern TP becomes warming remarkably and leads to the rising of FLH. This study provides an insight perspective for understanding the changes of FLH over the TP, which also suggests the influence on the cryosphere processes at multi-timescale variations.

Abstract:The knowledge regarding how the boundary layer height (BLH) changes over time is still poor. Here we analyze the spatial and temporal changes in radiosonde-derived measurements of BLH over China from 1979 to 2016. A qualitatively robust and abrupt change of BLH occurred in 2004. Over the former period (from 1979 to 2003) a spatially uniform increase was found in the BLH, while over the latter period BLH decreased in a spatially nonuniform way. Second, the meteorological influence on the rising BLH was determined to have a negative association with soil moisture, lower tropospheric stability and relative humidity, and a positive association with the near-surface temperature. Yet, there was a different influence of meteorology on the BLH over the latter period, where a negative association was revealed with T-sfc and relative humidity. These findings shed new light on the long-term changes in air pollution across China.

Abstract:The effects of soil freezing process on climate of East Asia are investigated by using NCAR CAM3.1 with an improved parameterization for freezing process. Results show that surface temperature significantly changed no matter in winter or summer. With the improved freezing process, simulated East Asian summer monsoon is intensified, and the precipitation in northern China and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River is intensive, whereas in south China it is descending.
